Saudi Arabia Prepares To Enter Bahrain

Tyler Durden's picture

And just when oil was tapering off on hopes that the Middle East supply situation may actually normalize, we get this from The Guardian: "Saudi forces are preparing to intervene in neighbouring Bahrain,
after a day of clashes between police and protesters who mounted the
most serious challenge to the island's royal family since demonstrations
began a month ago. The Crown Prince of Bahrain is expected to formally invite security forces from Saudi Arabia into his country today, as part of a request for support from other members of the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council." Pretty mich just as we predicted earlier. And yes, this is huge as Iran will promptly respond, setting off dormant religious tensions with a bang.

The crown prince, Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa, said in a televised statement that Bahrain had "witnessed tragic events" during a month of unprecedented political unrest.

Warning that "the right to security and safety is above all else", he added: "Any legitimate claims must not be made at the expanse of security and stability."

The crown prince has also promised that national dialogue would look at increasing the power of Bahrain's parliament, and that any deal could be put to nationwide referendum.

However, some protesters have pressed their demands further to call for the toppling of the Sunni dynasty.

The unrest is being closely watched in Saudi Arabia, where Shia are some 15% of the population.

The secretary general of the Gulf Co-operation Council, Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Attiya, expressed the "full solidarity with Bahrain's leadership and people", adding that "safeguarding security and stability in one country is a collective responsibility".

In an apparent reference to Iran, which Gulf Arab ruling elites fear may capitalise on an uprising by Shiites in Bahrain, he also expresssed "strong rejection of any foreign interference in the kingdom's internal affairs, asserting that any acts aiming to destabilise the kingdom and sow dissension between its citizens represent a dangerous encroachment on the whole GCC security and stability." Reports that the Saudi National Guard was poised to enter Bahrain were cited by the Foreign Office, alongside a recent increase in protests, as it changed its advice to advise British citizens against all travel to Bahrain.

Earlier on Sunday, police moved in on Pearl Square, a site of occupation by members of Bahrain's Shia majority, who are calling for an elected government and equality with Bahrain's Sunnis.

Witnesses said security forces surrounded the protesters' tent compound, shooting tear gas and rubber bullets at the activists in the largest effort to clear the square since a crackdown last month that left four dead after live ammunition was fired.

Activists tried to stand their ground yesterday and chanted "Peaceful, peaceful" as the crowd swelled into thousands, with protesters streaming to the square to reinforce the activists' lines, forcing the police to pull back by the early afternoon.

And with the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet a cab ride away from the main square where demonstrations are about to be an hourly occurrence, the US may it rather hard to get involved.

Distractions are the perfect time to do the naughties.  Saudi into Bahrain (and possibly Yemen).  Is US complicit?  Probably.  QE3 & 4 to "help" Japan as they need to repatriate Treasuries?

Can we learn nothing from the fact that Japan is in no economic shape to pay for rebuilding. Before disaster debt was already 2 times GDP.  That ratio is gonna get much much worse.  Does the US think there is no "disaster" in our future?  We have no room for one, but there always is one just around the corner.

Oh yeh sure it is pal. Sure it is. So basically what you punks are saying is that you want to stay in power and make the people eat shit sandwiches while you dine on cavier? no?  We have heard things like this before, like from the secretary of state hillbillery, who said, it takes a a village to raise a child. Well I guess now it takes a group of  thugs to get together and prevent the reigns of power being lifted from your hot little hands. Well its too late.

Why the hell is Saudi Arabia is dong this?! This is exactly playing into Iran's plans. All Iran will do is commence its proxies in Eastern Saudi Arabia to sabatoge the oil fields. If there is a hot war between Iran and Saudi Arabia oil will go $200 a barrel. This is about to get real. The shiites in Bahrain need to face force with force if they want any change.

Once's picture

Could anyone please explain where the tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran come from? Their past to nowadays relationship and interest?

Vlad Tepid's picture

The really simple explanation is Sunni vs Shia, each sure of their own interpretation of Islam and determined to extingiush the if the Counter-Reformation was still ongoing and Hugenots were still in open season.

Slightly more complex is the ethnic problems of Arabs wanting to dominate the Islamic world and Persians wanting that honor for themselves. Between us, I think the Turks are just chuckling and waiting for these two to finish each other off and return to their "rightful" place as the MENA hegemon.

Does Mohammed not say anything about Kings, Princes, Dictators, ect, and their accompanying tyranny being an anathema to the justice of God? Or it just part of Allah's inscrutable will?

Both applies. It is then up to the mullah to interpret the text of the koran in such a way that their followers are allowed to rob and kill someone whatever the eventuality being discussed ... The Way of Mohammed himself!!

Check out Oh Regional Indian's blog. One of his contributors is an astrologist, Cathartes Aura who wrote on MARCH 4 -- mind you--the following:

gah* of course you know I could go on, ha! I’ll spare you (all), and instead say happy new moon in pisces, fasten your seatbelts as the planets impatiently line up for the Aries BANG! to come. . . uranus enters aries (at zero degrees it is also the spring equinox point) on 3.11.11, those numbers have much “esoteric” juice, already I’ve seen things conspiring to happen on that day, revolutions as only uranus can herald – by April, fully5 planets in Aries, plus the sun(3.20.11) and moon, for a spell. . . it really won’t be the same, soon.

I hope Oh Regional Indian will forgive me for lifting something from his blog. I am not a believer in astrology but this is just uncanny. I recommend going to the blogsite itself to read this. Again it was written on March 4.
