Sergey Aleynikov Guilty Of Prior IP Violation?
Zero Hedge is still trying to ascertain whether this Sergey Aleynikov is "that" Sergey Aleynikov, but if 1=2, then (to keep it algo) it would seem Goldman's HR department is rather lousy at doing background checks. (Also, was Sergey in pro per? Hopefully he has learned how to retain counsel by now.)

The plaintiff was Merv Griffin. Who would have guessed that he was running a prop desk?
agree-
good articles... http://kl.am/tsc
The crazy thing is that many of these algorithms originated from the ENRON trading desk. Yeh, the CEO's, managers got into trouble. But the algorithm traders, etc. found work at Goldman. Practically took the whole team. So, the FBI already knows most of the players. they know exactly where the algorithms came from. I bet most of the Goldman algorithm systems actually belong to ENRON (ie their creditors). Goldman is really the one who should be investigated for stealing proprietary systems.
My contact tells me that Goldman actually charges massive fees to its insider clients (Russian billionaires, drug dealers, etc) to utilize these systems. So, lose the algorithm, lose the fees. Bad, real bad. But it works both ways, so I am told...Goldman steals algorithms, and algorithms stolen from them...
A search of the US Whitepages brings up a very short list of Sergey Aleynikovs nationwide. All of them appear to be the same person age 38 in various locales in NJ. One of these entries is a hit for Sergey Aleynikov at CTS Development Foundation, one of the defendants above.
Given the apparent dearth of Sergey Aleynikovs nationwide, I'd say this is the same Aleynikov with 80% probability.

How does GETCO have any association with this?
Sergey reportedly took a job with a Chicago high-frequency firm. Citadel says it wasn't them. GETCO is an obvious suspect, though there are a handful of other such firms.

Citadels ken griffith is desparate- his firm nearly went bust during the crisis. And he doesnt have the federal government financing him (like goldman, aig, citi,JPM). They hired a lot of the enron algorithm guys. So they are seasoned players and would be a likely destination for Sergey. Citadel has the fastest electronic connections into the markets. And they would be the highest bidders along with Renaissance/Simmons.
Well there are quite a number of trading firms in Chicago.

This isn't the same Serge Aleynikov: In 1997, Serge was an employee of the IDT corporation. I was a co-worker of his then.
when i started as a program analyst at gs many many moons ago one of the new hires tried to email his buddy at JPM the code for one of the FI trading systems but got caught because he brought down the entire FI GS mail server..
Serge didn't start working at IDT until Dec 1998. It's right on his LinkedIn main page. He listed himself as "President, Sr. Technical Director", Orbit Communications & Networking Dimension From Sept 1996 till Nov 1998.
It's without a doubt the same Serge.
Serge is looking more like not so innocent after all and goldmans HR dep is clearly failing to do their job ...
