A Shocked France Reacts To The Strauss-Kahn News

Tyler Durden's picture

A plethora of shocked, shocked, responses, that Strauss-Kahn tried to get away (and off) with it again... Of course, the focus now is on the presidential race which just like that of the US, following the Mike Huckabee announcement, is once again wide open.

HERVE MORIN, FORMER Defense MINISTER, PRESIDENT NEW Center PARTY

"I'm
not a socialist, he is not my political friend, but despite that I call
for the presumption of innocence. I will not take part in the witch
hunt, with the dogs that are barking and those spreading rumors and
saying 'I told you so'."

FRANCOIS BAROIN, FRENCH GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN

"We
have to be extremely prudent in analysis, comments and consequences.
The position of the French government respects two principles: a legal
process under the authority of American justice ... and the respect of
the presumption of innocence."

MARTINE AUBRY, SOCIALIST PARTY LEADER

"The
news we received from New York last night struck like a thunderbolt. I
call on the Socialists to stay united and reasonable.

"I urge that we wait for the facts, respect the presumption of innocence and to maintain the necessary decency."

FRANCOIS HOLLANDE, CANDIDATE FOR SOCIALIST PARTY PRIMARY

"I'm
flabbergasted, It's terrible news. There is a charge, but it's not
proof of guilt. We have to react with emotion ... but also with reserve.

"It
doesn't resemble the man I know. The sooner justice intervenes, the
earlier it will be better for him, the institution he represents and for
all of us."

CHRISTINE BOUTIN, PRESIDENT OF CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY

"Do you realize the image of France in all this? It's no longer possible for DSK (Strauss-Kahn)."

JEAN-CHRISTOPHE CAMBADELIS, STRAUSS-KAHN ALLY

"At
this time, I neither want to nor can draw hasty conclusions about the
charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn. This whole story does not
resemble him. (He) will soon be able to speak and defend himself."

SEGOLENE ROYAL, CANDIDATE FOR SOCIALIST PARTY PRIMARY

"This
man must be respected, his family must be respected. I don't want to
make use for myself of what has happened. I think it would be indecent
to make an episode out of this today and the rest of the week."

MARINE LE PEN, NATIONAL FRONT LEADER AND 2012 CANDIDATE

"The
case and the charges ... mark the end of his campaign and pre-campaign
for the presidency and will most likely prompt the IMF to ask him to
leave his post."

FRANCOIS BAYROU, CENTRIST FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

"All
this is completely astounding, immensely troubling and distressing. If
the facts prove true ... it's something degrading for all women. It's
terrible for the image of France."

MICHEL TAUBMANN, STRAUSS-KAHN BIOGRAPHER

"Evidently,
it could harm his career if it proves true that he has committed these
acts, but if he manages to clear himself of this then it could be
beneficial to him.

"If he's falsely accused, that could benefit him because the French don't like someone being wrongly accused."

JACQUES ATTALI, ECONOMIST AND PROMINENT SOCIALIST

"This
will change things. We are going to have a (Socialist Party) campaign
of Martine Aubry versus Francois Hollande. The presidential election is
far from being decided and there can be surprises, as this shows. The
current president is far from being beaten.

"The
most likely outcome is that this case will stick and even if he pleads
not guilty, which he may be, he won't be able to be candidate for the
Socialist primary for the presidency and he won't be able to stay at the
IMF."

DOMNINIQUE PAILLE, OF THE CENTRIST RADICAL PARTY

"It's
absolutely crazy. If it's true it would be a historic moment, in the
negative sense, for French politics... I cannot believe it.

The 32-year-old Sofitel hotel maid provided a terrifying account of the attack to cops.

At about 1 p.m., she walked into Strauss-Kahn's $3,000-a-night-suite - Room 2806 - at the posh W. 44th St. hotel , thinking it was empty.

Strauss-Kahn emerged from the bathroom naked, chased her down the hallway in his suite and yanked her into a bedroom, where he sexually assaulted her, the maid told police.

Or maybe, just maybe, DSK is a rapist who sexually abused his hotel maid thinking his money and power would protect him from the law. Now he has been proven wrong by some honest police officers, so far anyway.

I don't believe anything about this.

He must have done something to upset the FED of other financial overlords and they clearly want him out.

If he wanted kinky sex or anykind, he just needed to pick up the phone and 20 minutes later there would be a luxery call girl bending over in whatever position he orders to.

A sex accusation works fine in so many ways to quickly shut somebody up.

America hasn't had a sex addict president since.... ever!

The most perverted people on this planet are Americans. There isn't a single song written in America that doesn't talk about hookers, sex, rape...

The dirtiest beastialities, sex scandals and incest stories of the last century have always come from Texas America.

Wherever American soldiers go, the rape accusations follow starting the same day they land.

But is every America a sex addict? I know some and they are some of the finest people I know. Even if there are sic people walking in America it doesn't mean every America is one.

You are a racist pig for calling the french perverts. You've never been there, you don't know them and yet you need to say that.

Pope Forgives Molested Children
07.29.98

VATICAN CITY—Calling forgiveness "one of the highest virtues taught to us by Jesus," Pope John Paul II issued a papal decree Monday absolving priest-molested children of all sin.

Enlarge ImageThe Pope.

"Though grave and terrible sins have been committed, our Lord teaches us to turn the other cheek and forgive those who sin against us," said the pope, reading a prepared statement from a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square. "That is why, despite the terrible wrongs they have committed, the church must move on and forgive these children for their misdeeds."

"As Jesus said, 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone,'" the pope continued. "We must send a clear message to these hundreds—perhaps thousands—of children whose sinful ways have tempted so many of the church's servants into lustful violation of their holy vows of celibacy. The church forgives them for their transgressions and looks upon them not with intolerance, but compassion."

The papal announcement arrives in response to public outcry over the sex scandal sweeping the Catholic church in the U.S. Though official church doctrine condemns such transgressions, the pope's decision, observers say, is intended to demonstrate the church's willingness to put the scandal behind it and restore the public trust.

"By forgiving these children, primarily churchgoing boys between the ages of 5 and 15, the pope has shown true Christian kindness," said Father Thomas O'Malley, a member of the New York archdiocese and one of the many priests implicated in charges of sexual activity with minors. "The pope is saying that, in their own way, these sinful youths are victims, too. Through their absolution, he sends the important message that empathy, contrary to what naysayers and critics in the secular media would have us believe, does have a place in modern Catholicism."

For Catholics waiting for the pope to break his long silence on the scandal, the sweeping, decisive nature of his response has come as welcome relief.

"The pope has shown great love and compassion, much as Jesus did when he ministered to tax collectors and whores," said Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston. "Despite all they have done to jeopardize the careers of so many priests—to say nothing of imperiling the priests' immortal souls—the church embraces these underaged seducers and tempters with open arms. The pope's words and actions prove that the church is willing to put an end to the suffering and let the healing begin."

The mass absolution is being hailed by church scholars as one of the Vatican's most progressive acts since the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

"One cannot overstate the break from tradition this represents," said lay administrator Bruce McConnachie of the Los Angeles archdiocese. "After all, under church doctrine, the act of seducing a priest is considered a grave sin against the laws of God, punishable by condemnation to Hell for all eternity. But the pope has put all of that aside. He has let bygones be bygones. For this, all of those misbehaving, sexy little guys should feel grateful. By showing such willingness to forgive and forget, the pope has sent a clear message: Even though these boys have done much to undermine and subvert the priestly vows of celibacy, they are still deserving of God's love."

Margaret Leahy, 39, a Somerville, MA, homemaker and mother of one of the alleged seducers, expressed relief over the pope's announcement.

"For months, I feared that my boy—and the dozens of others who committed sinful acts with Father Halloran before he was moved to the safety of another parish to protect him from further temptation at their pre-pubescent hands—was going to Hell for what he'd done," Leahy said. "It's the worst feeling a mother can know. But thanks to the forgiveness of the pope, my long nightmare is finally over. He was just a boy of 8 at the time. He didn't know any better. Thank you, your Holiness, for giving my poor little Timothy a second chance at redemption."

However, not everyone within the Catholic church is so supportive of the pope's actions.

"What kind of a message is the pope sending today's children? That it's okay to seduce priests?" said one concerned Baltimore priest who asked to remain anonymous due to a pending court case. "With the pope's announcement, the church is essentially telling its youngest members, 'Go ahead and let Father So-And-So reach into your swim trunks at the church-youth-group pool party. It's okay, the pope will forgive you in the end.' Without fear of eternal damnation, how are these provocative young lotharios ever going to learn?"

"As the creep of secular humanism continues to chip away at our most sacred institutions, the Vatican has established a dangerous precedent," the priest continued. "We look to the church's authority for justice and righteousness, not politically convenient solutions that maintain the status quo. These nubile sinners should be held accountable for the damage they've done."

I don't know how many of you travel to posh hotels...what little I know of them...the cleaning women have their schedule dotted to a 'T'. You never see a cleaning woman call in on the impromptu when you are still in the bath room. Not on! Only in the old style Soviet hotels or in Africa would that happen when you heard a damsel knocking on the door and saying... "love calling"... traditional hotel-paid-hooker cry, often a KGB type spy, in those days in these far off nests. Has the western posh hotel in downtown NY dropped to Budapest 1985 or Brazzaville 1985 levels? ...Is there same agenda of sweaty KGB type watch dogs peeping through electronic spy holes into hotel rooms and 'activating' the call girl when the guy is naked in his bathroom? Curious that people on this site believe that Osama was frozen away for years, that the CIA or some such blew up the WTC, but automatically believe this story.  The guy was in charge of serious money by anyone's way of accounting, giving someone trillions of potential reasons to set him up. Based on the crowd he hangs with he could easily have done it, but my gut is leaning toward a set-up. Keep your eyes open for the equivalent of Building 7 going down. The maid is hit by a truck, he arranged for a hooker in a maid's uniform but the number he called is listed as never having been in service, something weird. Just a gut feeling.

Who do you think set him up DeadFred? The aliens from the planet Zog? Maybe the lizard men from the earths centre, was he about to foil their plans for surface domination? Haha. Put you tinfoil hat on and go back to your parents basement before the black helicopters set YOU up too.

But in all seriousness, the guys a rapist. People should stop defending him and be glad a REAL criminal might be locked up for once.

I'm no financial advisor, nor am I an expert on the markets, so this isn't advice, I'm just thinking out loud. I'm going to assume you mean physical PMs. I'm looking to buy more physical, too, but I'm waiting. I'm buying for the long term, not trying to take some quick profits, and I believe prices will fall further before ramping back up, maybe even fall a lot further. It seems to me that silver reversed and the attempt to rally back to the previous level is getting exhausted. I believe a drop to at least the low 20's if not further is within sight. There is a economic contraction under way, regardless of what the MSM propaganda machine wants us to believe. It's a contraction that is global in scope and epic in magnitude, and as a result, a collapse in pretty much all markets is inevitable. I'm not smart enough to time this shit in a rigged environment, but I do think a liquidity contraction is imminent. So, that's why I'm waiting.

By the way, ff you're throwing your post out their just to get ideas, good for you. If you're asking for advice, be wary. Do some research, read some history, look at current conditions and make your own decisions.

Thanks for the thorough response.  I think we could dip into the upper 20s again this summer, but I'm holding for the mid/long-term and wanted to withdrawal some funds before any socialization of 401Ks takes place (50/50 chance?) and also believe we'll hit 50+ in Ag again next winter.  The 20% + 10% tax hit on withdrawal does suck but I can make that on silver's next move up.

Just a thought, but Fernando has some pretty clear direction on what is valued if the economic condition totally falls off the cliff. With QE3 (ad Infintum) there is no longer any doubt the path the US Dollar will take. Be warned..his website is not sugar coated...but the facts are there to be shared. You gotta respect the guy for living as best he can in a World gone down the tubes. By the way.. I made the same decision on the 401K/IRA nonsense myself back in 1997. The Tax hit was nothing compared to the secure feeling of no Mortgage debts and cash to buy PM (lots of them in 1999 and 2000, and basic trade items.

WonderDawg's picture

As always, the question is timing. I think a socialization of 401Ks is a possibility, but the question is when? I believe that if it does happen, will see evidence that things are moving in that direction, trial balloons will be floated.

The other question is, what would happen to your 401K in the event of a crash in equities, bonds, and commodities, including PMs? There is a lot of evidence that the markets are moving in sync. If you could buy a lot more silver by waiting for it to drop another 40%, that would be smart, but if your 401K is going to lose 40% at the same, not good. You could withdraw some funds from the 401K and sit in cash while you wait, but to take that strategy you would have to have the conviction that all markets will fall enough to justify paying the early withdrawal penalty.

Your personal circumstances will have to factor into your strategy. You're the only one that has all the facts of your circumstances.

On the other hand, a crash could be quite sudden, accounts could be frozen, and an immediate social crisis could erupt. In which case, the most valuable PMs would be brass and lead.

Questions, questions.

Until it becomes known that this is a patten of behavior for DSK. And the IMF looked the other way, because the German and French banks came before everything and everyone else.

All subordinated to the banking interests. After all without confidence in Banks, we don't have a functioning world.

Collateral damage be damned.

I'm not saying they're going to release DSK, I'm saying Lipsky (all I had to see was his association with JP Morgan to know) will go ahead with the Greek bailout. The German and French banks "coming before everyone and everything else" shouldn't surprise anyone. Politicians and fools keep saying TARP was paid back in full, but the US bought toxic assets from these investment banks and now the country holds them on its books. They should have to buy back their toxic garbage. Also there is now a distinct possibility we may lose money on AIG's bailout. They seem to be heading the way of Bear Stearns. I wonder what their next bailout will look like. What should be done when it becomes abundantly clear that they need a bailout is the US government should force them to sell all profitable assets and they should be allowed to collapse. Wow, I feel like I just blew out candles on a birthday cake...

IMHO, eventually people will lose faith in the banking system not only because there will need to be continuous bailouts, but because of the lack of restructuring/regulating (nothing will change). R.I.P. Glass-Steagall Act.

Sun, 05/15/2011 - 11:58 | 1276184 lizzy36
lizzy36's picture

I would say distinct probability (in the 99th percentile) that the US loses money on AIG. $182B was "given" to AIG.

People will lose faith in the whole political structure, and the institutions associated therewith, because of the lack of change and the banking system (and because bankers continue to enrich themselves as the expense of others).

The other interesting concept associated with TARP is "Opportunity Costs".

Sun, 05/15/2011 - 12:05 | 1276216 Bobbyrib

Yeah, I meant to say in the post you're responding to: "What should be done *if and* when it becomes abundantly clear that they need a bailout is the US government should force them to sell all profitable assets and they should be allowed to collapse."

I find it amazing the Treasury had to "ask" AIG not to issue all those additional shares so we wouldn't go beneath the break even point. IMHO, wait a few months Timmy, the share price will most likely be below the breakeven point.

The bankers will not stop enriching themselves at the expense of everyone else until the people take a stand (politically or violent revolution). They have made that clear. What a world we live in!
