Showdown: U.S. Sends Warships to Confront Iran

George Washington's picture

Washington’s

Blog

I am re-posting this week-old essay in light of Tyler and Marla's recent reports about American war ships near Iran and this report from Haaretz saying that the G-8 expects Israel to strike Iran.

Israel National News is reporting :

Egypt allowed at least one Israeli and 11 American warships to pass through the Suez Canal as an Iranian flotilla flotilla approaches Gaza.

What
should we make of the fact that 11 U.S. warships and an Israeli warship
are sailing up the Suez Canal on their way to the Red Sea?

This
is - on the surface - a faceoff over Iran's support for relief ships
trying to sail into Gaza. Specifically, Iran has said it will have
Iranian military ships escort the flotilla providing humanitarian goods
to Gaza to make sure it arrives safely. On the other hand, the U.S. has
backed Israel's blockade of Gaza.

Tensions are obviously high
between the U.S. and Israel, on the one hand, and Iran on the other.
The U.S. and Israel have talked for years of bombing Iran's nuclear
sites.

As the Telegraph wrote last July:

Israeli warships have deployed to the Red Sea for what has been described as a rehearsal for a possible attack on Iran.

Israeli and Egyptian officials said two ships had sailed through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea.

Media reports in Israel said the two Saar-class missile ships had been sent as a "message" to the Tehran government....

An armada of U.S. warships in the Red Sea is similarly meant to convey a credible threat to attack Iran.

Indeed, because the Red Sea connects with the Arabian Sea (and see this), a large navy presence in the Red Sea will escalate tensions dramatically.

This
could quickly lead to a real confrontation. This is especially true
because warships from hostile nations could be in very close quarters,
and one mistake (such as accidentally bumping into a foreign ship)
could unintentionally lead to war.

But we can't look at this faceoff in a vacuum.

Intelligence Failures

Remember that there have been numerous intelligence failures in the past which have led to war.

For
example, the U.S. Navy's own historians now say that the sinking of the
USS Maine -- the justification for America's entry into the
Spanish-American War -- was probably caused by an internal explosion of coal, rather than an attack by the Spanish.

It is also now well-accepted that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident which led to the Vietnam war was a fiction (confirmed here).

And two lies were used to justify the 1991 Gulf War: the statement that Iraqis murdered Kuwaiti babies and the statement that a quarter of a million Iraqi troops were massed on the border with Saudi Arabia (see also this article)(technically, the statement about Kuwaiti babies did not come from the U.S. government, but from a public relations firm hired by the government).

Who Dunnit?

While
- as documented above - inaccurate reports have helped rally support
for war, other methods for drumming up support have been used as well.

As I wrote in February:

Forget the claims and allegations that false flag terror
- governments attacking people and then blaming others in order to
create animosity towards those blamed - has been used throughout
history.

This essay will solely discuss government admissions to the use of false flag terror.

For example:

  • The CIA admits
that it hired Iranians in the 1950's to pose as Communists and stage
bombings in Iran in order to turn the country against its
    democratically-elected president
  • Israel admits
that an Israeli terrorist cell operating in Egypt planted bombs in
several buildings, including U.S. diplomatic facilities, then left
behind "evidence" implicating the Arabs as the culprits (one of the
bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to identify the
bombers, and several of the Israelis later confessed) (and see this and this)
  • The well-respected former Indonesian president admits that the government probably had a role in the Bali bombings
  • As admitted by
the U.S. government, recently declassified documents show that in the
1960's, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff signed off on a plan to blow up AMERICAN airplanes (using an elaborate plan involving the switching of airplanes), and also to commit terrorist acts on American soil, and then to blame it on the Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba. See the following ABC news report; the official documents; and watch this interview with the former Washington Investigative Producer for ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings [w
    hile
the Joint Chiefs of Staff pushed for Operation Northwoods to be carried
out, cooler heads prevailed; President Kennedy or his Secretary of
Defense Robert McNamara apparently vetoed the plan]

There are many other instances of false flag attacks used throughout history proven by the historical evidence. See this, this and this. The above are only some examples of governments admitting to using false flag terror.

Iran

Many high-level people have warned of the use of a false flag attack to justify war with Iran. For example:

  • Jimmy Carter's former National Security Adviser and Obama's initial foreign policy adviser- Zbigniew Brzezinski - told the Senate that a terrorist act might be carried out in the U.S. and falsely blamed on Iran to justify war against that nation
  • Congressman Ron Paul told
Congress: "I am concerned, however, that a contrived Gulf of Tonkin-
type incident may occur to gain popular support for an attack on Iran"

  • And a member of the British Parliament (George Galloway) stated:
"there is a very real danger" that the American government will stage a
false flag terror attack in order to justify war against Iran

Thus,
if any elements within the U.S. or Israeli government wish to find an
excuse to attack Iran, they could either manufacture false intelligence
or carry out a false flag attack.

A war with Iran would benefit no one other than the giant defense contractors would plunge the world into a very deep depression (notwithstanding George W. Bush's sentiment to the contrary). Indeed, if China and Russia side with Iran, the U.S. might end up losing against Iran.

May cool heads prevail.

I'm looking for a King David Hotel type of event before this confrontation with Iran is over. Of course the US's global standing will suffer and Israel will simply embrace a new protector.

thank you george for clarity and sanity in the turgid world of lies.

"For example, the U.S. Navy's own historians now say that the sinking of the USS Maine -- the justification for America's entry into the Spanish-American War -- was probably caused by an internal explosion of coal, rather than an attack by the Spanish."

no, it wasn't coal....it was a mine placed by a coalition of american industrialists and cuban revolutionaries....it was no accident....it was pure blackops - the mine being supplied by a danish/peruvian mine inventor....roosevelt lusted so badly for that war that he resigned his position in the navy to lead americans in the phony war....

the murderous blood thirsty obama goons are hell-bent on having their war - life is about to get very ugly for americans and iranians....

Then why all the flimsy, tired, anti-Iranian rhetoric in the MSM? Surely, after unnecessarily invading the countries immediately to the east and west of Iran, not to mention generally occupying 90% of the ME, it isn't a stretch to envision a false flag and subsequent invasion. It's the recipe. War is a racket.

The U.S is surrounded by many educated and high thinking societies who only have the world's best interests in mind.  And we should just take their advice and go along with this and that and the other, until they are satisfied.

As a U.S. Citizen, I recognize our economic crisis, our monetary crisis (unfolding), and our uncompetitive workforce compared to just about everyone (education, skills).  If I recognize this, so do top gov't and military officials.  They're not as bubbled up as you probably think.  The United States has one leg to stand on, and it is BFG, or BIG FUCKING GUN to the layperson.

When a stronger and quicker animal is being outsmarted or feels threatened, the natural reaction will be to attack those it perceives as threats to its survival.  The United States has no alternative but military force to distract and level what it perceives as a playing field it no longer recognizes.  By torching the field, the other players will be hampered and weakened.

I expect major military activities to increase drastically, while our one major advantage in the world (seven carrier battle groups last I checked ten years ago) still remains an advantage.  Might makes right, whether you like it or not.  We will use our military trump card again and again, relying on the disconnected, apathetic, and useless masses not to do much except yell and protest and complain but ultimately not act, due to inferior military strength and fear of mutually assured nuclear destruction.

Or we can just fade away into the back seat of the world car pool of power and control, despite our nature and historical behavior.

Follow The Money

Alon Pinkas is former Israeli consul general to the US. Speaking to a seminar of foreign and Israeli journalists at the IDC Herzliya last week, he argued that a turning point has been reached in bilateral relations. "In reality, US interests in the Middle East are with the Arab world. That is where the oil is, and Israel is just one small country surrounded by 290 million Arabs," he said.

Excessive Tom Clancey reading + tin foil hat + a series of half-assed alarmist blog postings interpeting overt routine naval task force movements as evidence of an imminent military strike on Iran = a revalent, cutting edge financial blog being bogged down with pointless arguments over everyones preferred fantasy of ww3.

Oh well, if ya cant beat em, heres my version pulled straight from MY ass.

The Iranian relief vessel is piloted by suicide bombers who will detonate the whole damn ship when Isreali commandoes attempt to board it.  Ok I admit it, that was kinda lame, but just as valid as any conjecture here.

Commander Zero all but ensured someone would have to attack the psychos in Iran and unleash hell on earth. The mexican border is wide open, what are the chances a few nukes got smuggled in just waiting for us to strike Iran.

This will not end pretty.

People learned from Gulf War I never to trust the USA: The people living in the marshes rebelled against saddam because Bush I told them that "regime change" was in hand; and then promply left Saddam there to murder them!

The Iranians are not stupid; they know that the US always lies to brown people and only cares about the rights of it's oligarchs. If the US had intervened, every protester would have run away, because they would know that, somehow, they would be set up to die at the hands of the mullahs.

All these events happen on special dates. Also 11th July is a new moon day . So reaction time at the bombed location will be slower than normal.

The US armada has made it's way there.

11th July 830pm S African local time is the finals of the World Cup FIFA.

That would mean  after 10 pm Teheran time . The event is supposed to garner 200 million viewers around the world. The necessary distraction is already there. Remember Georgia invasion took place when both Bush & Putin were at the Chinese Olympics.

The summer is nearly over. Oil will be hit but time is available for setting right supplies before the onset of winter. Putting off a strike now will end up putting it off for many more months too. It is extremely possible that the economic collpase and the attack will take place simultaneously. Patriotism will be the call to forget the pains the governments have given you, as also to exercise more control over all of us.

Now TPTB are taking the warfare option as well, so that the milliatry-industrial complex is happy and continues to donate to the Washingtocrats, while at the same time the sheeple have a new intellectual topic for discussion (right next to Dancing With The Stars and American Idol).

Why should the Israelis run the risks of bombing?

Why not just wait until the next election and distribute sacks of cash and plant false rumours to discredit the democratically elected leadership and then impose a new leader, say a relative of the Shah and have him build a secret police force that will torture these nuclear fools and pull them limb from limb on the rack.

To hell with the Iranian people. This Shah would be the USA and IDF's man in Tehran. Supply him with all the hardware he needs to pull the fingernails of half the population and drill out the knees of the the other half. Such a strategy will not make us loved but it will surely ease mid east tensions and solve everybodies problems.

Mon, 06/28/2010 - 07:51 | 438073 sushi

Glad I got junked.

My proposal was ironic. Britain and the US did in fact destabilize Iran, did depose a democratically elected government, did assist in the imposition of a regime of terror as bad as that of Saddham Hussein, did look the other way as the SVAK terrorized the citzenry and then when they got upset with the Iranian people for having the temerity to pursue thier version of life, liberty and happiness they supplied chemical weapons (or precursors) to Saddham and otherwise assisted him in the prosecution of a war that lasted 10 years and claimed over a million combatants.

America treats other human beings like dog shit and then gets uppity when those same turds seek to obtain the means to defend themselves against such treatment.

Add up the foreign entanglements of the Iranians since Alexander the Great. The number? 0. And we are looking at several centuries. Add up the foreign entanglements of the USA in the past 200 years. You loose count pretty fast.

While I disagree with your "hell to the Iranian people" attitude, I do often wonder why assassinations aren't more in vogue.

I mean, we're sending 1000's of troops over there with an absurd price-tag -- and their mission (if not their goal) involves killing people -- why not just cut to the chase, save tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of innocent lives and take out their leadership?

Assassination is much more preferable from both a moral and a financial standpoint.  Innocents need not die.  Leadership (of any country -- including ours) has always been a fair target in war.  What we need is some good old fashioned black-ops.

(The reason we don't do this of course, is because our leadership pretends to be brave when it comes to sending armies -- but to assassinate foreign leadership is to invite response-in-kind.  And our leadership is chickenshit when it comes to their own lives.)

good thought... assassinations would be an extremely effective intervention if the point were to neutralize the political threats waved in our faces as justification for war...howevere..

the true goal is profit... the global financiers would not profit from such a strategic and cheap approach to the problem... it is far more profitable if the world is required to spend quadrillions of dollars in a long, drawn out and messy conflict... dollars that we must borrow from the US federal reserve bank... and pay back with interest to its owners..

Who says's he's a psycho? The Mainstream Media (MSM)? The same MSM who told us all about Saddam's WMDs to justify a war of aggression on Iraq? The same ones that told us that Osama Bin Laden was responsible for 9-11 to justify a war of aggression on Afghanistan, when all the evidence points to Israel being responsible?

Iran hasn't attacked or invaded anyone for over 300 years. Try to say the same about Israel or the USA. Personally I know which of the three countries I would prefer to have nukes. As well as that, every country is entitled to nuclear weapons as defence if they so desire. If I was Iran and I had maniacal Israel trying to drum up war against me and mis-quoting me e.g. that "he's made it perfectly clear that he will totally destroy israel", I would want nukes as well.

If you want to really find the mindset of Israel listen to an ex-Jewish, ex-Israeli who served in the IDF and came to extremely disturbing conclusions, amongst others that the nukes they have aren't for their immediate neighbours but are for the rest of the world:

http://theuglytruth.podbean.com/

Dr. Alan  Sabrosky (who is Jewish BTW), former director of studies at the US Army War College says that the military brass now know that Israel and traitors within the US committed the 911 attack:

If you care so much about a psycho with nukes, why do you allow fascist, genocidal fanatics like Avgidor Lieberman have them at his disposal with nary a peep?

And hell, only one country has ever used them - why does that provide a moral high ground?

Iran has made it clear to the entire world that if they are attacked by the forces of (White) imperialism, they will defend themselves.  Your assertion is an outright fabrication.  If you want to look at who actually did make comments like those you describe, look to the White, apartheid colony for which you're now backstopping.

I find it's much more relevant to concentrate on what is than over what might be if your own fanatical delusions and fears are realized someday in the future.

Well you obviously dont know too much about history, can you name 1 nation Iran has invaded in the last 100 years? I doubt it, because they havn't invaded anyone. Also even IF they had a nuke, what would they do with it? Drop it on Isreal? That would be suicide, I very much doubt Iran is that stupid.

Also Iran has never stated it wanted to 'destory' Isreal, only that it didnt recognise it as a state. And I agree with this statement on the basis that a state needs to have borders, Isreal doesnt techinicaly have borders i.e. it technicaly isn't a state

His quote is more accurately translated as Israel will cease to exist as an entity.

The Zionists' aim is to have the entire Biblical Israel as theirs, and they're well on their way to doing so. They have publicly stated many times by many of their leaders they will use terror and murder and all means neccessary to achieve these aims.

the true beneficiearies of the expansion of war are the financiers for the entire cherade... the private share holders of the US federal reserve bank (ben's true bosses) are watering at the mouth for the oppertunity to collect more interest on the "currency" they create out of thin air and lend to our "leaders" so that they may continue to rain death and destruction upon our neighbors... opps... i mean enemies...very profitable!
