Significant Intraday VWAP Dislocation

One wonders what Linear Algebra and its Applications would have to say about this.

there are some strange things going on today, not only this... the market is up but the dollar is up too. gold is up with the strong dollar. what the hell does all this mean...

and crude's contango is getting wider again (pullback time anyone? anyone? bueller?? buuueeeller??)

These non-confirmations could mean that the sell dollars and buy anything trade is exhausting for now.

agreed that is what we could be looking at... and dollar-strength is going to lead toward suppressing commodity prices in the short-run and re-focus attention on potentials of deflation in the medium-run.

alas... trade in the short-run, invest in the medium-run and think in the long-run!

probably means that the market is a sea of randomness and that any explanation to these moves is probably wrong.

VWAP algo...hmmmm...Tyler where have we heard that before?

GS: Hey Michael (Bloomberg) could you do us a favor and discontinue that VWAP thing on the Bloomberg terminal.

MB: well guys I need some cash for my re-election

GS: Done how much do you need?...well on second thought just tell us how much we will just have to peel a little more of our "force for good" bid/ask spread from our clients...(Again we fully disclose it in ALL our legal documents but we don't do it, honestly guys)

MB: Cool I will look into it

GS: Oh BTW this Tyler Durden MF...he is really starting to be a pain in our ass...can't we do something to this guy? And call it the 'Patriot Act' or 'Home Land Security.'

MB: Fuck no dude your on your own there...

Unless you are scalping the dollar has been pretty much flatlined all day esp vs the continental currencies (GBP, EUR, CHF).  The yen has been moving with equities and there is some reduced risk appetite in the commodity currencies (AUD, CAD, NZD).  CAD is moving with crude.

Boring day in FX.

Very boring on the USD.  Playing against the CAD/JPY here to try to exaggerate a move back into risk aversion.  Plus I think it was pushed up too high on a 'breakout.'

I'm probably the least financially edumacated here, but man, this shiat is starting to smell funny.....would "toppy" or "tippy" or "teetery" be fairly apt descriptions of what's going on today?

I have that text sitting under my coffee table. Along with Contemporary Linear Algebra and Applied Regression Analysis. Where's my job offer?

See, the problem with "hard mathy" references like the linear algebra ones is that they deal with actual numbers, rather than "subjective interpretation of error-prone numerical data in the presence of limited sample set size". Your ARA text is more in the latter vein, though still sounds somewhat dauntingly rigorous. You really need some thing more in vein of "Statistics for Business Majors", which is of course the B-school analog of "Physics without calculus".

If I were to contemplate writing a hard-math paper on recent market dynamics, it would probably have a title along the lines of "Behavior of nonlinear systems near unstable equilibria in the presence of strong forcing", or for the non-calculus crowd, "what happens when the gramophone needle breaks, the speakers blow and the free coke and crystal meth run out."

You spoke too soon, now we are back to VWAP as per instructions. I am going to continue to just play dumb and think it the old EW rule of retracement of the 5th back to the triangle. Center of the 4th W triangle was 997 so here we are. At least the robots know EW thank god.

LOL - anyone look at that chart now? guess what happened!

Yep - SPY sold off back to the VWAP level, then found support at the 100.15 level which funnily enough is the VWAP since the open on Friday (August).

Is it really as easy as trading bands off VWAP...lol

just use G on your stock to create a custom chart view, then add a study - choose VWAP

can someone please explain what this means? is it just that SPY is being distributed while market is moving up?

if so - what's the big deal?

it could just be that ES is being bought so its driving the market higher while SPY is being sold.

Yeah, those of us not used to looking at Bberg terminals would appreciate some insight on just WTF this means.  Maybe a sticky post in the forums?
