Silver Breaks $26; Shows What A Little RICO Lawsuit Can Do To The Price Of A Manipulated Commodity

Tyler Durden's picture

Silver hits a new all time record: $26.03 (except for that whole Hunt bros reverse manipulation thing). It is simply AMAZING what a little RICO lawsuit filed against JPM and HSBC will do. How about a 5% price increase in a day?

And for all those patting themselves on the back for what the Fed's dollar debasement is doing to their stock portfolios, perhaps the fact that the S&P is now down 29% YTD priced in silver should be a Zimbabwean wake up call.

And you ain't seen nothing yet. The LBMA (but mostly JPM and HSBC) are bracing for a tsunami of margin calls after the close.

Are you saying that you could logically conclude/prove this?  Or are you saying that any argument can be made in favor that anyone who can, has used silver manipulation?  But I refute both concepts on the grounds that logic can not be derived from just anywhere, and that I personally do not believe that an Auto Union could have the ability or need to surpress silver prices.

I do not endorse Wiki but this is simple:

Not in the slightest.  What difference does it make if Bert or Ernie is elected?

I just enjoy watching everyone blame Bert and think Ernie can make things better.

To paraphrase Matt Taibbi, the fact that Republicans got put into power just demonstrates that the American voter has a memory span of 10 minutes.

If your a silver bug, you already have the other stuff covered.

Well done.  That was the correct answer.

But take it a step further for me.  Let's say that $100 silver coincides with a complete collapse in the dollar, then what?...  For the sake of discussion, let's say there's no immediate return to "normalcy".  A period of chaos without reprieve.

And let's assume you're covered.  You've got your cabin in the woods, your loved ones, you supply of toilet paper, supply of fresh water, and of course, guns and ammo...  You're all set.

How/where do you cash in your precious metals?  When do you cash in and for what?  Another currency?  Goods?  If complete chaos, would you accept silver for your family's vegetables or meat?  Do you leave the country?  What would a collapse in the dollar then lead to?  War?  How does the government respond to currency?

My question was not to attack, but I find it fascinating to see the thought pattern continue from different individuals...

I welcome your thoughts.

You assume complete chaos. During the french revolution, Paris still required staggering amounts of food- they were always met.

Commerce will continue, but it will continue in a different currency. Those currencies will probably be silver, gold and barter. When the role of monetary substitutes arises, it will be dealt with then.

The value in PM's is they have a history of being money- whether the bankers want you to believe it or not.

Others seem to be starting to ask this question as well, and I've yet to see a good answer.

My assumption has been that with a corresponding collapse in real estate prices, that you'd convert some portion of the metals to dollars, and then the dollars into something like farmland.  Or a small local manufacturing businesses, a bakery, etc.  Something that you could pick up on the cheap that provided a means of production in a local/regional area to offset the economic isolation that would come with a dollar collapse.

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 14:31 | 700306 Jean Valjean

You have not seen a good answer because you refuse to go there, just like most.  If dollar collapses, it's done.  You will not want to exchange ANYTHING for dollars.  You will only exchange things for PM's.  And trust me, a can of corned beef hash will not cost one ounce of silver, it will cost closer to one 1962 dime.

I don't think that's a fair statement.  There will likely be a significant period of time where the dollar may not have any real value as a unit of exchange on a global stage, but that doesn't mean it doesn't continue in that role domestically for a longer period of time.

Domestic transactions will still need to be settled, and the infrastructure to just suddenly start settling them in metals simply doesn't exist.  You're not going to be trading silver coins for diesel fuel, because the local gas station isn't in a position to accept them.  You may find the occasional local mom/pop store that will, but for the majority of America, those are exceptions to the rule when it comes to day-to-day necessities.

An increasingly devalued dollar will still be the predominant medium of exchange in America for a significant portion of any currency crisis.

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 17:09 | 701048 Jean Valjean
Jean Valjean's picture

Ok, I'm with you.  I thought you were talking about the less significant portion of time AFTER the dollar is no longer the predominant medium of exchange.  Have you thought about that period of time much?  Cause that time is coming.  And contrary to many commentators, there will be many, many Americans working to gather and distribute food, alcohol, and everything else people desire.  It's just that they will be using a different type of MONEY.  Get some.

I actually believe that the crime rate will be LOWER during much of this time.  Many people here act like they are going to be shooting zombies trying to steal their stuff.  All you will need to transact will be to pull a silver coin from your pocket.  One ounce will buy you approximately 15 cans of corn beef hash.

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 18:46 | 701308 MonkeyMan

I would guess that if the dollar did lose its value as a global currency, that cash will still have some function as a means of exchange. It will be all the zeros & ones in the electronic banking system that will vanish or be confiscated - coins & notes will be OK.

Although silver & gold will hold greater value, I just don't think there is enough out there to have a significant use for small transactions for three hundred million people.

You don't.  You have a store of supplies to last while you get your food production up and running and/or to carry you through periods of bad harvests.  You have (or should have) a separate store of barterable goods for trade.

You hold your PMs until a new system emerges.  They are there to transfer your wealth from the old system to the new.

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 15:31 | 700577 HomemadeLasagna
HomemadeLasagna's picture

This assumes that there's not an interim trade that's more profitable, though.  Which would you rather have in some sort of "new" system: productive assets that you bought with PMs during the "fire sale" at the bottom of the old system, or the intangibles of a "new" currency?  While that new currency might be (will likely be) metal-backed, can you be sure?

I'm not saying your path isn't how it will play out, but I think there will be a real period of uncertaiinty in between where the opportunity to own means of production may be more attractive than simply holding and converting PMs to some new monetary standard.

Cost you maybe a $100.00, good pistol,$400.00, 200-300 rds ammo,and a .410 Shotgun,200-300 shells.($300.00 lot).

Bottom line, YOU Need to know how NOW, and you should have learned long ago.

The banks will try and have the metals put in their "safe" keeping.  They will give upawrds of 100% interest for it.  Or you can sell it to the governement for credits or whatever they are calling them.  Bancor, etc.  Or you can use them as a medium of exchange for good purchases, such as bestowing one OZ to you local butcher for a summers worth of BBQ.  An OZ for a summers worth of beer at your local tavern.  An OZ at your local gas station for a few months worth of gas (you will not be driving out of town).  You will put these purchases on your tab.  Or an OZ for a pickup truck.  etc.........

It would be obvious. You will think "I can't believe that someone would be willing to trade this [valuable asset] for just a few gold coins."

In the German hyperinflation, an entire block of downtown Berlin commercial real estate sold for eight ounces of gold.

I would prepare to buy real estate, farmland, and -- oddly enough -- equities, which might be dismissed as just so much toilet paper. Amazing what you can do with a 20% ownership of a publicly traded corporation.

I, too, would appreciate a link, or reference, regarding that. I've heard that story, or variations of it, many times. For example, there's the one about the bellboy in Berlin who buys the whole freaking hotel for an ounce of gold (at the point of the very worst of the hyperinflation). But so far, no one ever references a valid historical source for these stories. I'm not saying they are untrue. They probably ARE true. I'd just like to see it direct from a "real" historical source. Thanks.

How/where do you cash in your precious metals?

Why, and for what? You start to delve into the realm of barter, and the division of labor at some point here. Perhaps I need a plumber, dentist, pair of shoes, pants, or a shirt. Maybe I am able to trade some canned tomatoes, maybe silver. IF...big IF...SHTF, life will go on. In order to get wealth to flow back to me, I'd better have a skill that other people need. That skill, very likely, will need to manifest itself in the physical world Somehow, I think shuffling papers across a desk, or selling gold in an MMO ain't gonna cut it anymore.

Thu, 11/04/2010 - 15:24 | 700544 goldsaver
goldsaver's picture

In my case my PMs are divided in 4 categories.

Cat 1: Silver Bars segregated to pay off my mortgage. I have 10oz bars in my safe earmarked for this purpose. Lets say your mortgage today is 100K in FNRs. You see the posibility that silver would go up 5x during the transition to a new currency caused by hyperinflation of FRNs. You put aside $20k of silver and wait. Once silver hits lets say $120FRN an ounce, you sell and pay off the mortgage (the extra 20% is for taxes). Presto, you leveraged the destruction of fiat to your favor. If it doesnt happen, or you end up not having a mortgage due to complete collapse, you still have 1,000oz of silver.

Cat 2: Transitional currency. Mostly silver dimes, Kennedy halves and Morgan dollars. In case of currency collapse, you can use these for purchases that you would normally use FRNs for. If FRNs are still in use, you can exchange your silver for FRNs at the collapse rate and use that as currency. Similar to what Argentinians did with dollars during their collapse.

Cat 3: Wealth Preservation. Although reaching middle age, I still have a good 40 years left on this earth. I want my family to have something at the other end of this crap. So I accumulate gold bars (mostly 2.5gr Pamp Suisse) as a form of savings. I buy some every pay period. Gold is the only real form of wealth preservation in history. Im following in the steps of giants including Another and FOA on this one.

Cat 4: Get out of Dodge. Have a 1oz gold coin per family member. This is Airplane ticket money. Plus a hand full of 1gr gold chips for hotels, bribes or fuel as needed.

Nope, I'm not wealthy. My truck and my wive's car are 10 years old and paid for years ago ( I bought my truck with cash in 2006). I don't have the latest iCrap. I don't need it. I made the decision to put my wealth in my pocket and not in someone else's.

Understand, this is all in addition to 1 year of staples (need more TP, or maybe I'll just install a bidet), fuels and a water filter (have a 3000 gallon gold fish pond). Plus the hardware to defend it.

And that is also a good option. Look up Fernando at ferfal.blogspot.com. He is and Argentinian that has been living thru the currency collapse there. He recommends having some of your gold in 14k jewelry, specially wedding bands and chains. That way, after things get really ugly, you can go to a "we buy gold place" pretend is your wedding band or gold chain and sell it at current exchange rates without raising suspicion. He recommends not to buy anything better than 14k because you will be payed at 14k rates anyway. He does this in Argentina for groceries and emergency expenditures.

That's a legitimate question.  I guess we'd be trading it in on any new medium of exchange that seems viable, well after the smoke clears, and there is some form of viable political economy.  I don't think direct barter will ever become widespread--it's too limited, and price discovery is at best a wild guess.  Do people want to negotiate every pack of gum?

Who cares?

The key is we are powerless to stop it.  All we can do is position ourselves in the PM for when the rest of the world finally realizes that even a silver quarter is worth more than any piece of paper you print numbers on.

I agree with above.  Those that are putting it into physical are probably taking care of several other needs, also.

I'm not a survivalist, but I don't know what's wrong with the ones who've homesteaded the space.  I don't see any of my items (including alcohol for consumption and fuel) on their lists . . . and regardless of how you might feel about drugs, under such a scenario opiates (poppies) and high grade hemp will be extremely valuable.

Get that concrete house with metal roof, though.  Burning you out will be the obvious strategy.  You can't fight that off with guns.

Folks forget water. In an emgergency REMEMBER you have 40-55+ gallons of Potable in your Hot Water heater/s.

In the back of your toilets, you have 3-5 gallons, as long as you have not hung a deoderizer/chlorine tab in it.

That's a lot of water for "Essentials".

Also, DO NOT make the mistake of buying cases of 16oz plastic bottled H2o.

Maybe enough for 6-8 mos (emg spares), as the new plastic containers are Bio-degradable,and will leak after around 12 mos(even inside storage).

Rice/Red Beans,Pastas, have a shelf lives of years (if you keep the vermin out).

You can LIVE on Rice/Beans, H2o.For a LONG time...............3 items, and your safe(but boring after a while).Vitamins Multi, and Extra C.( much more, but that's enough to keep you alive a long time.(pain meds, prescrips a absolute must, good FA Kit, and manual.)
