Simulation Shows High Levels of Radiation Hitting the West in May

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research (Nilo) ran models and forecasts
of the radioactive fallout from the Japanese nuclear accident for some
time. Nilo has stopped providing such forecasts to the public.

However, Alexander Higgins discovered an internal page of Nilo's website showing high levels of radioactive iodine 131:

(Click for larger image).

Because
this comes from an internal - rather than publicly-released - portion
of Nilo's website, it cannot be confirmed that these are real readings,
as opposed to some sort of fictitious simulation. However, the webpage containing the simulation contains "flexpart", which is the name of Nilo's official,formerly-public simulations.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, given that the readings show high levels of radiation hitting much of the West this month, that the EPA has suspended all but routine radiation monitoring, that American states aren't really monitoring, that Canada has drastically slashed the amount of monitoring it is doing, and that the situation in Japan is worse than the Japanese have previously admitted, I had to post this information ... with appropriate caveats.

Update: A University of California Berkeley nuclear scientist wrote last month:

The tools they are using appear to be very sophisticated and realistic
codes for air transport modeling. This is not my area of expertise, but
I am getting this from reading the technical parts of their website.

***

[But] I found the following disclaimer on the page you linked. I have put some parts in bold:

"These products are highly uncertain based on limited
information for the source terms. Please use with caution and understand
that the values are likely to change once we obtain more information on
the overall nature of the accident. The products should be
considered informational and only indicate 'worst case scenario'
releases. From what we've learned recently, it seems releases of this
magnitude have not yet occurred.
Furthermore, these modeling
products are based on global meteorological data, which are too coarse
to provide reliable details of the transport of the plume across Japan.

"Currently we are using a daily releases distributed evenly of 0.1E18 Bq I-131, 0.1 E17 Cs-137, and 0.1 E19 Xe-133 per day."

Al Jazeera had an article a couple weeks ago on crowd sourcing radiation measurements in Japan.  Since the kids in west coast universities (or anywhere else) aren't learning anything useful, perhaps they could be put to work gathering and sharing useful information.

that is the jet stream.  the I-131 coming from fuk_u is enormous, but has a short half-life.  a few daze.  so it looks like a simulation, based on the jet stream, which is weather stuff:  HPC Surface Analysis/Radar Loop

i think the iodine comes to ground in the rain.  i live on the w coast & we got a lot of rain after the mess.  the readings from the berkeley site showed some radioactivity increases with the rain, i thought.

so it is coming through, constantly.  the cesium seems like the longer-term poison, with a half-life of over two decades.

those reactors are just pumping this stuff out, full-time from the cladding melts and heat.  vaporization.  fuk_u is right near the genesis of the jet stream for the pacific.  from physics and chemistry, we recall that air is a fluid.  this river of air moves all over the place.

most of us, here, have gotten the rain right outa the jet stream.  the japan>pacific>california currents circulate waters from the east of japan.

It is just plain despicable in regards to the way this issue is being covered up. People should rail the NILU people for criminally covering up of the truth like the rest of the supposed protection organizations are doing. The EPA/FDA/NRC/UN ect.

It is pretty dang bad when you cannot even get a simple fallout projection map that is accurate and up to date. Check this out:

A couple of things about these simulations.  Radioactive release information is very sketchy, and is generally underestimated.  This has been true of every single radioactive release.  If you remember, it was "not as bad as 3 mile island," until it was, and then it was "not Chernobyl".  Notice they aren't even saying that anymore.

The key thing that the simulation shows, which we can confirm is that radiation does not "spread out in a homogenous fashion."  It's not particles in an unmoving medium undergoing brownian motion.  Think instead of a fast moving stream (i.e. the jet stream).  The fast moving part tends to concentrate and move the concentrated portion a very long distance.  We know this happens from experience.  There are examples of very high concentrations of radioactivity (e.g. the "your 20 km away" variety) that were found many thousands of miles away.  However, a city block away, there would be no radioactivity.  You can see this "finger of concentration" in action in the simulation.  There are other simulations that show this better (as tmosley mentions the colors are all wrong here.  I've seen a better one with an "orange finger").

However, looking at the simulation and predicting anything 5 days out is impossible.  I know, I've tried it, and it doesn't correlate to what I've measured with my trusty dosimeter.  This shouldn't be surprising that the little movie doesn't completely map to reality (or perhaps my methods are not accurate enough).

A better way to estimate is to look at the enenews site for concentrated release information and estimate on jet stream speeds.  There is a govt. email that says a "concentrated release" will happen May 8th.  That should be hitting the West Coast just about now.  I'm assuming the release happened, since the news only got worse.

Also note that "radnet" and the EPA network are bullshit and useless.  The concentrations of radiation in the air are too low and too concentrated to hit one of the four measuring stations in the state of CA, for example.

Food chain concentration is the big issue.  If you haven't been monitoring, check out UC Berkeley's radiation page.  Milk is a big issue for kids (Iodine and Cesium).

Good luck to all of us.

The methodology of the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, also known as NILU is smartly analyzed and discussed at:

http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/node/2400

Their projections are "worst case" and carry the caveat:

"These products are highly uncertain based on limited information for the source terms. Please use with caution and understand that the values are likely to change once we obtain more information on the overall nature of the accident. The products should be considered informational and only indicate 'worst case scenario' releases. From what we've learned recently, it seems releases of this magnitude have not yet occurred. Furthermore, these modeling products are based on global meteorological data, which are too coarse to provide reliable details of the transport of the plume across Japan.

"Currently we are using a daily releases distributed evenly of 0.1E18 Bq I-131, 0.1 E17 Cs-137, and 0.1 E19 Xe-133 per day."

That does not mean their projections might not have some degree of accuracy.

The Berkeley Nuclear site is the best the subject.

As one of the tinfoil hat wearing crew, I purchased a Terra-P radiometer/dosimeter a short time after the tsunami hit.  I didn't buy the "everything's OK, go back to sleep line," because quite frankly, my bullshit detector was ringing off the hook.  Just the fact that this got less and less coverage as things got worse was an indication all was not well in the land of the rising sun.

The damn dosimeter cost me $1400!  A 3x markup.  The unit I bought has the same guts as the bright yellow one that the Ukranian military and civilian population used after Chernobyl.  It is decent at measuring gamma ray decay, somewhat iffy at beta particle decay, and useless for alpha.  It'll work great if you have a huge irradiated piece of reactor near you.

I've been using it for a while now, for about a month and a half.

It does work pretty good for detecting radioactive fallout in the wind.  It's not perfect (and I imagine it's hard to measure wind since it's blowing the fuck around).  Here are some things I've noticed with it (note, I live in Oakland, CA).

1. Early on, both indoors and outdoors, the readings I would get were consistently between 0.07 and 0.09 microsieverts.  We'll call this "background radiation".  I measured obvious things like granite (which has a higher natural radiation), and under the house (for Radon, which I'm assuming doesn't exist due to the same measurement as background).

2. After Fukushima was going for about, say 3 weeks (about beginning of April), I would occasionally come out into my kitchen and turn on the device (hey, when you pay $1400, you want to get your use out of it).  There were several times that the reading jumped off of the charts and started an alarm.  This has happened a few times (perhaps a total of 5) since I've had the device, with readings from 1.0 to 0.5 microsieverts.  Note that this is between about 4.5 to 11 times background.  In some instances, the reading would come down after standing around.  In some instances it would stay persistently high.  This has happened both inside and outside of my house.  Because of this, I went out and bought two Honeywell 3-in-1 HEPA filters (retail $249) which I keep constantly on low.  I've done extensive experiments to show that these do in fact remove the radioactivity from the air (which I'm assuming is radioactive dust, and further assuming is from Fukushima, via the Jet Stream).  The filters take about 15 minutes to cycle the air in the room, and will drop the inside radioactive gamma ray measurements from 0.15, to 0.08 which is background.

How dangerous is this stuff?  Hard to tell.  But you have to admit it's a little disconcerting for the consumer unit used in Chernobyl to periodically have alarms go off, inside of your house.  If you believe the MSM, you'd equate the radioactive dust with a plane flight and count yourself good.  Unfortunately, I don't buy that canard.  Radioactive Cesium-137 will stay active for your lifetime.  Swallow a tiny piece and it may sit inside you like a tiny burning ember, for your entire life.  Internal radiation just doesn't equate to external - just look at the population of smokers for evidence.  Also note that the MSM is constantly talking about Iodine (with it's half-life of 8 days) rather than Cesium (half-life of 30 years).  I call bullshit.

What can be done about this invisible, and hard to quantify threat.  Especially with the EPA going offline (note UC Berkeley, my grad alma mater continues to monitor so see their site for useful food chain measurements if you're so inclined).

3. At this point I get an almost constant measurement of 0.12-0.15 outside.  That's not good!  I know it seems low, but this is a lot of measured radioactive dust and it is now constant.  This is a recent phenomena (last 2 weeks).  Before this period, I'd occasionally get a high reading and then it would come down.  Thus, I'm guessing the fallout is worse.

4. There are some youtube videos showing concentrated fallout in rain.  I've observed the same thing, but not to the extent of some of the videos.

A few things:

1. If you work in a modern office building, congrats, you're in luck.  The HVAC systems use HEPA filters and keep positive air pressure which tends to keep radioactive dust out.  In my office in Silicon Valley, my dosimeter constantly gives very low background radiation (0.07 microsieverts gamma).  Note that HEPA filters were _designed_ for the purpose of removing radioactive dust, and were repurposed for other means (e.g. biological).

2. If you spend a lot of time at home, you've got a problem.  My house was built 100 years ago and is like a swiss cheese in terms of holes.  From what I can tell, old houses act as dust concentrators (think about all those dust bunnies you find under the bed, mkay)?  The problem is you may live in a radioactive dust concentrator.  I'd recommend a HEPA filter running on low to medium setting (high setting kicks up the dust).

3. If you have kids, keep an eye on them.  Stuffy noses, red eyes, coughs that last too long, these might all be symptoms of allergies to radioactive dust.  Unfortunately, there's no way to tell these from the standard allergies to every-fucking-thing-on-the-planet.  However, some amount of care will reduce exposure.  Showers.  Don't touch your eyes.  Wash your hands (and forearms).  Coming out of the expose air, you might want to put your clothes somewhere and wash immediately.  Further, there are things that workers at nuclear power plants do:  Bath in epsom salts and bicarbonate soda several times a week.  Drink baking soda and water.  I use a product called "Zeolyte" which is supposed to pull heavy metal toxins out of the body.  I think this stuff all works as it seems to be what the "pros" use.

Finally realize you're probably going to live.  But sticking your head in the sand, or overreacting doesn't help anyone.  Best to try and understand from factual information what is really going on so you can have a mitigation plan.

Also, from viewing video of unit 3, it is apparent (IMHO) that all the plutonium MOX fuel rods reached prompt criticality, and had a low yield nuclear explosion (there's a great video on fairwinds that shows the difference between unit 3 and the others).  This is actually good news, because it seems to show (IMHO) that a super serious explosion can happen, and not affect the west coast.  In a way this seems better, at least for us West Coasters than the slow leak into the ocean and air.  Unfortunately, I think the worse result is the spewing that's happening which is aggregating in the food chain and air.  But this does tend to help one plan as to mitigating effects (i.e. it's not going to blow, it's going to smolder).

Thanks for sharing your measurements.  Somewhere I saw a claim that Chernobyl changed the background radiation level even up to today.  I have not been able to locate long term background radiation timeseries (obviously it would be relative to some kind of stable reference like location and measurement method), but you have evidence that Fukushima has changed the background level in Oakland, CA for for now.

Um, wouldn't the 400 Bq/m2 exposure only lead to about an extra 1 millisievert of exposure a year (through air and eating exposed food)? If, "generally, people are exposed to about 1 to 10 millisieverts of radiation a year from natural background radiation," this doesn't seem like a big jump. If this is all accurate of course.

Who really knows "safe" dosages (half the shit they say seems made up as they go along).

However, if this is acurate http://www.blindbatnews.com/2011/04/idaho-rain-water-over-safe-limits-fo... then "the Federal government set safe levels of iodine-131, in drinking water, at 0.111 Becquerels per liter."

So 400 Bq per meter for the entire air column?  That sounds pretty low...  To the point where I wonder how they can measure it that accurately.

Not to mention that it's got a a half-life of 8.02 days, so that big red smear seems like it should get very observably smaller as it moves across the image.

Hmm...

What many here see coming to this country is true, but how many will be around in good health to deal with it is the question to ask.

We already see the well laid plans of Agenda 21 being played out in the continued contamination of the entire northern hemisphere from the radiation of the Fukushima Event. The population control agenda at work now and more proof they do not care about the environment or their precious Gia.

What most do not know is that besides this disaster in Japan, there have been high doses of radiation being leaked by reactors all over the world long before the Fukushima Event. Hushed up by Govt Electric (GE).

Time allows the accumulations to continue. How many people noticed that the readings on the EPA RADNET map graphs were showing far greater amounts of radiation in the months before the Japan earthquake? As far back as February there were readings approaching 1,000 CPM of gross beta amounts? The radiation leaks are all planed well to slowly eliminate as many as possible world wide so there is little resistance from healthy beings. Now, the EPA records are being covered up.

All the gold, bullets, and canned tuna will not save you unless you have been living in one of the many underground cities for the last year or live in the southern hemisphere which is also being contaminated little by little.

The continued radioactive contamination that is being allowed by the UN and their supposed nuklear watch dog agency that is supposed to protect the people of the world is doing just exactly the opposite by aiding and abetting the other agencies like the EPA, FDA, and NRC to cover up the continuing and accumulating radiation in the whole northern hemisphere. Everyone who breaths and eats is being affected.

And all the while they keep the mass mind distracted into a thousand other directions. Mainly towards the pursuits of money and things that most consider valuable. Divide and conquer are the tools of the same bunch that has brought you all the slow implementation of Agenda 21 and radiation poisoning.

Also, for those who think the sheeple of the USA will do anything but cower in fear, or feel that there will be a great uprising to save the day, please read the book by the good Dr Begich called "EARTH RISING: The Revolution, Toward a Thousand Years of Peace." This book lists the patents and descriptions of some of the "Non-lethal" and "lethal" riot control apparatus the govt has up it's sleeve ready to use on the populace when the chinga hits the fan. Still, the American can be an unpredictable animal and only a short amount of time remains for all this to manifest or not.

Change is the only constant in the universe and there are plenty of paths to peace and salvation. Necessity is the mother of invention and time tells all things.

Is prudence preparation never-the-less?

properly irradiated food contains no radiation. The radiation kills the bacteria in the food by destroying the dna/rna of the bacteria. Its not the radiation that makes the food safe, it is the lack of bacteria that makes it safe.

Thus the question becomes can you trust a government that can't even properly supervise a financial market, to safely irradiate food just to increase the shelf life?
