Something Broke: Containment Cap Removed From BP Oil Leak After Problems Encountered; Massive Increase In Spill Rate

Tyler Durden's picture

This is bad to very bad. Coast guard reports two deaths have occurred in the containment effort. Not all is lost - in what probably shouldn't pass for an attempt at humor yet achieves precisely that, the US coast guard said the oil flow is not completely unrestrcited, and some oil was being burned off on the surface. Nothing like a little oil rain for the already happy happy gulf region.

Can we nuke and stop that spill already?

I really wish people would stop mentioning the nuke tactic.  The Russians sealed their big fuck up on land.

You ever go to a beach and see a clam blow hole under water then fill it in?  What happens about ten seconds later?  The bubbles keep coming back up.

Why?

Because the clam can create a far greater pressure on the dirt above it than you have time to fill in that hole.  Now with the earth...the contents are under pressure already, with the force of the entire nuclear arsenal plus a hell of alot more power than we can visualize.  People think a nuke is pretty scary.  Imagine a nuke times around 2 billion, that's the type of force contained under a substratem of dirt/rock that has hardened with 4 billion years of time, then some ant comes along and pokes a hole in it.

I seriously don't think people understand the scale of what they did at all.  The well they dug is closer to the core of the earth at this point than it is at the surface.  The geologists still don't know the size of the well because the only time it was attempted and it failed so miserably that the Russian blew up a nuke on their own land to attempt to control it.  I would guess it's still seaping today.  Not like anyone would know or tell considering how secretive the Russians are plus the oil business being secretive themselves.

What happened with the general today? The powow ended early but no word of a termination. Barky looks weaker and weaker. There should have been an immediate announcement with the brow beaten general retiring to spend time with his family.

My WAG is that Obama wanted to look like a man by dressing down his hand-picked general, while being magnanimous enough to send him back to Afghan.  But the general threw him for a loop today when he said he wanted out - final offer.  That is why the WH has not come out with any info - the aforementioned scenario they had been prepared for didn't play out, and they are preparing to intro the new general.

I wouldn't be surprised if the general unloads on Obama at some point.

Downpressor Man lyrics

Downpresser man

Where you gonna run to

(3x)

All along that day

(CHORUS)

You gonna run to the sea

But the sea will be boiling

When you run to the sea

The sea will be boiling(2x)

All along that day

You gonna run to the rocks

The rocks will be melting

When you run to the rocks

The rocks will be melitng(2x)

All that day

So I said

CHORUS

You drink your big champagne and laugh(3x)

All along that day

I wouldn't like to be a flea

Under your collar man

(3x)

All along that day

You can run but you can't hide(3x)

Telling you all along that day

You gonna run to the Lord

Beggin' to hide you

(2x)

You gonna run to Jah

Beggin' to hide you

All, all along that day

And I said Downpresser Man

Where you gonna run to

Where you gonna run to Downpresser man

Where you gonna run to

I said all along

All along, along that day Downpresser man(4x)

Wait, Downpresser man

Where you gonna run to

Downpresser man

I don't know where you gonna run to

All along that day

Downpresser man

You can't run, you can't bribe Jah-Jah

Can't call him in a bar

Fe can drink some

Devil soup

Can't bribe him to run a car now

Can't test him faith

Downpresser man(5x)

Where you gonna run to

Downpresser man

You can't bribe no one

Them no want no money

Them run'f money

That money get funny

Downpresser Man...

Why the Oil Spill Will Change Nothing

By SHAMUS COOKE

As is typical with U.S. politicians and media, an extremely serious topic has nearly been reduced to absurdity. Once the urgency of the Gulf oil eruption has been fully sterilized, the stage will be set for business as usual politics — with the corporations comfortably in the driver seat.

But the corporate establishment cannot act too quickly in its fervor to drop the topic.

The environmental destruction brought on by corporate greed has opened the eyes of millions in the U.S. — eyes that are struggling to stay open as they now face the enormous sleep-producing machine of the mainstream media.

One way the media and politicians hypnotize the masses is by spreading the blame, and there are countless ways to do this.

The right-wing media is taking a risky propaganda move by blaming Obama’s “big government” actions against BP, which is painted as the hapless victim of Obama’s “socialism.”

Contrary to the media’s reporting, Obama did not “make” BP set up a $20 billion dollar account to pay for damages; this amount was agreed on behind closed doors for the purposes of calming public anger. BP had to “agree” to the “deal”; and as the Huffington Post reports, “… [Obama] administration officials also acknowledge a negotiation is at play here, and key issues remain unsolved.” (June 16, 2010).

In making its “big government” accusations, the right wing vastly underestimates working peoples’ hatred for giant corporations. As opposed to wishing that the government should take it easier on corporations, workers would like a much tougher response, for once.

How happy would millions of people be if BP’s assets —including those of the top shareholders and executives — were seized to clean up the oil spill and pay workers for their loss of livelihood? This cost will be at least a hundred times what BP “agreed” to pay. How many millions of people living in the U.S. angrily disagreed with Obama when he said: “BP is a strong and viable company and it is in all of our interests that it remain so.”

The media slant of the right wing is not entirely irrational, since it stems from a very real emotion: the fear that working people will demand that corporations be controlled democratically for the purpose of social need, not shareholders’ profit. It is this phobia that will continue to guide the right-wing’s media perspective as the recession grinds on, creating an increased anti-corporate mentality.

And while the right wing poisons the truth about the oil spill by blaming Obama’s “big government,” Obama seeks to minimize BP’s role — and his own — by repeatedly blaming “America’s addiction to oil.” Although it's true that the U.S. economy is oil dependent, Obama's ulterior motive here is to disperse blame to everybody in the country, since most people drive cars or use oil-driven transportation. If we are all equally at fault, then nobody is to blame. The current crisis is thus pushed aside, so that “long term solutions” may be discussed instead.

And while long-term energy solutions are desperately needed, they will not come from the U.S. two-party system. Obama’s oval office speech made this clear enough: in response to the largest environmental disaster in the recorded history, one of two "solutions" mentioned by Obama was “higher energy efficiency standards for buildings.” Obama’s cuddling of BP results in part from another kind of investment of this mega-corporation: “The largest beneficiary of campaign donations from BP in the 2008 election cycle, for instance, was President Obama, who took in $77,000 from company executives and its political action committee.” (The New York Times, June 19, 2010).

Obama’s oval office speech did not even mention the Democrat’s stalled energy bill, which includes the highly touted but Wall Street inspired Cap and Trade scheme. Even if the hugely insufficient energy bill did pass, it allots a measly $4 billion in research and development for alternative energy, an amount that will ensure that little progress is made.

An ex-advisor to Bill Clinton, Bill Galston, correctly concluded: "…[Obama’s oval office] speech tacitly sounded the death-knell for the inclusion of serious climate change provisions in any energy bill that Congress might enact this year."

In fact, a real solution to the U.S. energy crisis was hinted at during Obama’s oval office speech, when he made reference to the U.S. economy’s immense transformation during World War II. His point was that the U.S. economy can change direction drastically to produce certain outcomes, and he’s right. War is definitely a challenge that the corporate establishment is willing to spend massive resources on. During World War II, the entire U.S. economy was directed towards this aim, with factories re-opening to massively produce tanks and bombs.

A similar effort will not be made towards alternative forms of energy. Millions of jobs could easily be created if closed auto plants and other factories were retooled to massively produce solar panels, windmills, energy-efficient windows, high-speed trains, busses, etc.

The Gulf oil catastrophe has not proven to be a large enough disaster to provoke change, proving that nothing will as long as the Democrats and the Republicans are in charge. The U.S. oil and coal addictions will continue to produce masses of pollution and environmental destruction, the likes of which are beginning to challenge the future of humanity.

Since giant corporations constitute an enormous barrier to social progress, it will take the majority of working people to concentrate their energy on removing these obstacles. The first step will be to end all support for the corporate-controlled Democrats and Republicans and work towards creating a political party that is democratically controlled by working people.

It's the pressure, the well was kicking 3000/1 gas to oil at the time of the explosion. By capping the well with the containment device they probably have caused more oil to blow out the sides of the casing and have created a bigger problem. What we are dealing with here is a well that is leaking from many places and gas and oil is now finding its way out through fracks in the subfloor. As these leaks progress they become larger and soon the oil and gas will take the easiest path out of the well. This is not good news because if this is the case then there will be no way to contain the oil without collapsing the entire well.

Here is a quote from CNN.com regarding the two workers who were killed:

"Allen also said that two oil recovery workers in the Gulf of Mexico have died. One died in a swimming accident; the other was an operator of a boat, he said."

How generic and vapid can they be??  From other reports, the captain of the boat was shot! And the two sentences above are the only references to this in the entire article (which is fairly lengthy by the way).  Why do I get the feeling that there is MUCH more to this than we're being told and that CNN (and other media outlets) are complicit in covering up the information?  Oh, wait, maybe its this tinfoil hat I'm wearing on my head.  I mean, we do live in a 'free market' with 'free speech' and 'free and independent press' right?

Maybe because you are unstable to begin with?

A guy dies at his home swimming pool.  You think it was a hit?

The second one, the boat captain, seems to have committed suicide.  Is BP responsible?  He was earning an income, BTW.

we are bugs on a host.  we poke little holes in the host to feed off.  not being careful, we poked a hole too big, and it could kill the host and the bugs.  some of the bugs panic, and some continue their gorging unabated.

The Earth was perfectly happy with a sterile reducing atmosphere and oceans green with iron (until the stromatolites came along).  It doesn't give a fuck about us.  It's been chugging along quite nicely for 4500 million years.

Nothing we do will "kill the host".

The bugs? ...oh sure.

Why are did we drill @ this incredible depth in the first place? This is where the culpability is. Oh and with whoever thought the initial problems were not an issue and could be blown off.....just like the sub-prime. This is human error, period = BP, RIG, Dearest Leader, the enviro's, regulators, et.al. Just PATHETIC.

we are down this deep because this is the only place that there is any undeveloped oil reserve remaining.  ANWR and shallow water are just not that significant compared to the numbers of barrels in deepwater.  This isn't the only place nor the deepest.  Google Carioca

Gentlemen, Ladies: we may have just witnessed "Peak Oil", but not the one you think:

After this disaster all efforts will be made to switch AWAY from oil toward ANY alternatives, green or not. Oil will be viewed as filthy, dangerous and unreliable.

It's all downhill from here as far as oil demand, which has already suffered a crushing blow during the recession.

yeah, good luck with that.  There is no alternative.  One barrel is 12 man-years of labor.  The energy density of oil is what MADE automotive travel like we do and especially air travel even possible.

What the US government won't tell you is we have no alternative to oil and gas for the forseeable future. Any alternative like wind or solar will only supplement not replace. Even the greens know this.

The extremely energy wasteful layout of US cities and infrastructure is an albatross we will be paying for dearly when energy supplies get more expensive. There is no way to add an energy efficient way of transporting people and supplies. The average person in the suburbs will be screwed. At some point in the distant future peole will be forced to abandon suburbia and move closer together. Unfortunately enough "planned" cities like in Europe and Asia do not exist in the US.

trav777, I must say your comments on this thread are dead on.

No one wants to hear the truth.  Everybody thinks we can invent some kind of 100% riskless "magic energy beans" if we just "put our mind to it".

"Hey, we're Americans.  We went to the moon, right?"

Not only is there "no alternative", but we have built an entire society (at all levels) that is 100% dependent on it.

Not a good combination.

It doesn't matter if BP was criminally negligent or not.  We've got no choice but to keep sucking this stuff out of the ground.  Everything around you depends on it.

June 26-28 Gulf coast/Florida region, thunderstorms deluges, tornadoes/waterspouts, followed by flooding later.  Tropical Storm forecast with 80% confidence. - Piers Corbyn (weatheraction)

Starting soon and over the remainder of this year the oil volcano will place pressures of irresistible magnitude on the populace forcing the relocation of tens of millions of Americans, creating chaos in America. Poison air and gas clouds will be visible even within the mainstream media.  -HPH

The currency crash/unemployment wave kicks off beginning June 28, with markets shaking quaking event.  The currency woes of July will build to a crisis point of insurmountable proportions by August 1, and the crushing economic reality will come shining through for all to see. This summer will be the absolute last peak in the markets structure, while this fall will be three months of vomiting. The summer debt explosions go to such heights as to create massive overwhelming hyper-inflation in Fall that sweeps across countries globally with such ferocity bringing down governments. Riots and mob unrest will become a regular news story as the currencies are shredded publicly and planetary panic to buy precious metals overwhelms the censors in the propaganda press. June 28 provides the flood word for the precious metals, as well as the floating away of silver from gold. New reorganized currencies will not gain support and will be laughed at when introduced. The metals, especially silver, will from June 28 onward express their own destiny separate from the currencies. -HPH

People think this BP well is a big deal?  At 23000'?? LOL.

Andarko is already producing gas in 8900' of water in the GOM.  Carioca is at 2400 meters of water, with some of the field being at another 7500+ meters below the sea floor.  They already have a test well down to part of this field.

This is the future of oil production because all the surface fields are already discovered and in development and most have already peaked.

Well yes, as we knew that it did not FALL off.  The unanswered question is WHY, unless one has a core of belief in the reporting of the MSM, with information supplied by the goobermint and BP.

Those of us who have formulated our own opinions from the onset and questioned all of the supplied data have been generally proven correct.

It is NOT what we are being told, but what we are NOT being told.

Yeah the robot did it is a little unconvincing. I can't believe that a robot "bumping" into it could cause that much damage. Look how long it took a robot to saw off through the pipe - and that was a focussed effort.

This is more scary than funny. I was just watching the reattaching process of the LMRP to the BOP between 8-10PM EST. While the 'cap' is now in place, it is still spewing oil from the bottom. There was no connection between the pipe and the cap as of 9 PM or so. Yet the Wall Street Journal posts this at 10:51 PM EST:

NEW ORLEANS (AFP)--The oil containment system in the Gulf of Mexico was reattached Wednesday and is capturing oil again, BP PLC (BP) said, after it was halted earlier Wednesday following a collision involving a robotic submarine.

The cap "was successfully reinstalled on the Deepwater Horizon's failed blow-out preventer" at 6:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT), BP said in a statement, adding that "the system resumed collecting oil and gas" a half hour later.

Oil and gas for some 10 hours Wednesday spewed unhindered into the Gulf of Mexico after BP detached its containment cap to make repairs after a remote-controlled submarine crashed into it.

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100623-714346.html

So - a) the AFP has the script of a screenplay and accidentally released it a couple of hours too early, and/or with the wrong timestamp, or b) the supposedly 'live' ROV feeds of the well are delayed by 4 hours or so, or c) all of the above.
