South Korea On Alert As North Korean Subs Disappear In East Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

From Yonhap:

SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military was tracking four North Korean submarines which disappeared from their east coast base after conducting naval training in the East Sea earlier this week, a military official in Seoul said Wednesday.

Locations of the North's four 300-ton-class submarines have been unknown for two days, the military official said, noting, "We are tracking the four submarines by mobilizing all naval capabilities in the East Sea."

The submarines left the Chaho base located near the Musudan-ri missile launch pad site in North Hamgyong province in North Korea's northeast coast, according to the official.

Nothing to worry about.  They got in range of the Mothership's cloaking field.  There's a counter for that.

Each of those subs likely has a transponder stuck to its belly beaming it's coordinates directly to the Pentagon.  Or we've slapped it with some high-tech invisible paint that we could see from Venus.

I have every confidence in our ability to track Korean submarines.  We spend as much on defense as the rest of the world combined.

Maybe someone took my advice posted here on ZH:  North Korea is a psycho state that doesn't need any submarines, so it would really be best that they just lose contact with them all the sudden, permanently, without any public annoucement made.

No these are the Sang-O class mini-sub they are not advanced but all diesel boats present a challenge in those rocky coastal areas. They are mainly used for spec ops or mining, which could mean they are going to infiltrate some guys in the south which they have done often.

I highly doubt they're nuclear. Diesels are MUCH quieter than nukes anyhow. They run on batteries while submerged. Diesel charges the batteries when an air snorkle can get to the surface. Like the Chevy Volt. These thing can creep very slowly and quietly.

probably diesel.  And they are pretty easy to track via satellite.

They are not the ones to worry about and not the ones who may have sunk the frigate.  The ones to worry about are the 4-6 man mini subs attached to freighters that launched the first torpedo in the first place.

The Russian built subs are bleh, no worries - even if the news says they don't know where they are, our SOSUS and satellites do.

11,000 pieces of artillery, loaded by human artillerymen embedded into mountain bunkers and tunnels like the guns of Navarone against our 30,000 soldiers makes stealth bombers kinda dodgy.  We don't have enough stealth bombers to take them out at one go, but they can level Seoul within 5 minutes and not to mention the human sacrifice of American soldiers at the DMZ - 30,000 against 1.2 million.

That is probably why the pentagon does not see why they just don't fuck up Kim Jong Il once and for all.

In a command and control country, all you need to do is to take out the head shed and their commo.  Those artillery units will just sit there like Saddams did when we pounded them.  The underlings don't take a dump without permission.  Plus how do we know that those communication lines have not already been compromised and false orders will be given to these same units.

Finally, if you have seen what an MLRS system can do to people (impressive), you can eliminate a grid square per missle.  North Korean army will move one mile and be no more.  These systems are standoff and are mobile.

The question is, do you want to bet on that?

After I spent 94-95 studying in Moscow, after I made friends with the paratroopers who were stationed at the metro stations after the '94 December Chechen War, I myself would not bet on them breaking down because of a command and control country.  That's a myth that was told to us while we were in the military.

I am sure that that NK Colonel is fully capable of giving orders to his troops, especially if they follow former Soviet TO&E

But if you want to bet against it, be my guest

The Chinese version of the Romeo Class is called the "Ming." Russia got the technology from Germany after WWII, gave it to China in the 60s and China gave it to NK. Supposedly they have 21 of them.

They could still sink a couple of ships though the retaliation would be swift.

I am more worried about the long range Howitzers. They could kill hundreds of thousands and then the NK army would come over the DMZ in hordes. I would rather US soldiers stand down in that event. Let SK handle it.

The only way to keep Seoul civilian casualties low is a surprise coordinated cruise missile strike with tactical Neutron bombs, late at night around 2 or 3 am, along the NK border defenses and against NK Command and Control structures. Followed by an armored advance through the weakest section of the DMZ on a direct route to Pyongyang. I would also have B-2's loitering over the front lines to drop tactical nukes on any artillery formations that start to open fire on Seoul. It has to be a quick death for their artillery formations and C3I installations. After that the NK state should crumble like a house of cards.

Ah Douglas MacArthur's lovechild brought to us by the masters of eugenics, get thee to a 1000 black and white episodes of MASH and look for the little fellow crying to his mommy on the table.

The man in the elevator shoes challenged Tiger to an 18-hole match in Bangkok and to avoid detection he is traveling by sub.  The Thai authorities, eager to redirect attention from their murderous rampage,  are preparing to welcome Mr. Kim and their fellow half-countryman, Eldrick. After he shoots an 18, Mr. Kim will take Tiger to Patpong Road for a happy ending.

Grand deception. North Korea poses no threat to anyone other than South Korea and Japan. The worst they could do to the states is "maybe" land a bottle rocket on Sarah Palin's Alaska residence. Would that be a bad thing?

Does no one find it strange that the analysts who inspected the torpedo fragments, which sank the SK boat, determined that they were from a German made torpedo.

Who just got some free submarines from Germany?

This crap moves markets?

S.K was tracking the subs then lost track of the subs. Maybe a few U.S subs torpedoed all 4 of the N.K subs?

Unless the North Koreans have some new artillery technology, Seoul is out of range of artillery shells.  Guided missles are required, these require launcers and can be tracked.  Once fired, their location is known and easy to destroy.

I am a former Artillery Officer in the U.S.M.C.

There are 155mm howitzers that can throw 40+ K. That would be sufficient to hit Seoul.

"Once fired, their location is known and easy to destroy."

But the missile is gone. Hezbollah is perfectly happy to lose the launcher. War is changing. The Koreans are not likely to lead in this though it's true.

You may want to brush up.  It's rather widely known that Seoul is within range of NK artillery.  NK has a bunch of 170mm SP guns at locations all along the DMZ near Seoul.  Iran used the same weapon, acquired from NK, against Iraq in the '80's with some success.  They also have a 240mm unguided MLRS system that can hit a good chuck of the city.  They've got a bunch of FROG-7 unguided missiles too, no problem hitting Seoul with them.  NK will reserve their guided SSMs for military targets.

There would be nothing easy about a war with NK.  They have spent the last 50 years getting ready

North Korea called.  They said the sinking was a friendly-fire incident, i.e., a U.S. f***-up, followed by a cover-up.
