Tyler Durden's picture

According to AP, the Korean mobilization is complete, and now ROK fighter jets have been scrambled to deter North Korean attacks. Shit's getting real.

More if war breaks out.

And they are with the current right wing Lee's administration. I hope some more Koreans killed, so that S Koreans can learn something. Moreover, JungAngIlbo is owned by Samsung family .

Welcome to Zerohedge....

Should be Step Right Up!!!!  Zerohedge is on the go!!!  More ridiculous headlines screaming war, famine, fiat currency collapse and imploding markets!!! Step right up becuase only here is the truth spoken!!!

What a joke this place has become.  Take a look at the older posts.  Everyday, something is happening, and by God, this will be the straw.  Yet everyday, nothing ever comes of the crisis de jour.  I don't believe there is a more inaccurate and unreliable site on the web today.

How long before readers come to understand that this place is a very poor source of information?  How many times will people read that Europe is going to erupt in flames, hyperinflation is going to destroy America next week, Irish banks are going to run into failure or some other disaster is about to befall us and then doesn't, before they find a more reputable source of information?

I mean really?  Is Tyler going to allow this site to become completely irrelevant based on the ever more sensationalistic headlines that propose events which never transpire?  Do you seek to become the Business Insider of the tin foil hat crowd?

I will repeat for the ZH sheeple here a couple of salient facts.  The market will not fall until the Fed says it can fall.  Bankers are going to continue to make record amounts of income and no one, except for some low level flunkies will face any punishment over any of the mortgage issues.

Oh, and there will be wars and rumors of wars, but that doesn't really require any headlines now does it?

PLease ZH sheeple; learn to think.  Take a look at the futures children.  Looks like the Koreean situation has everyone all shook up now doesn't it?

Another do-over?

From Wiki...

"The Korean War (1950–armistice, 1953)[28] was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which was supported by People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war began on 25 June 1950 and an armistice was signed on 27 July 1953. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War. The Korean peninsula had been ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. In 1945, following the surrender of Japan, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part."

Wow. Never seen so much anti-gold propaganda on Bloomberg until now.

"Siegel, the Wharton finance professor, says he’s skeptical about the metal over the long term, especially for retail investors. He believes they will have a harder time judging when to buy and sell.

His research shows gold has underperformed stocks, bonds, bills and even real estate over the long run. It has total real returns of just 0.6 percent per year since 1802, compared with 6.6 percent for stocks, 3.6 percent for bonds and 2.8 percent for bills."

How can someone be so clueless? I've laughed and vomitted at the same time.

Seriously. Does this man know the real use of gold, and does he know that given that gold was money, talking about gold gains before the XXth century is incredibly stupid? How can you express in gold the gains of gold?

Buying the wrong stocks or bonds would yield one zero returns since 1802 (or any other date one wishes to cherry pick). There is no "wrong" gold.

The whole article is on the same level. Everything is done to make people think gold is an investment, like bonds or stocks, while it is not and will never be an "investment".

I'll pass on the ridiculous and pitiful assertion that the price of gold drives Africans to injuries in gold mines, and that of course, holders of gold make people suffer.

Bloomberg is reaching the same levels of nonsense and propaganda than CNBC.

Freedom is a personal desire and, ultimately, must come domestically.  We do not get to free anyone...  this is a road they must travel themselves.  Maybe we can help along the way.  But, have we really freed anything that reverts to its former self upon our exit?  As a result, is temporary freedom worth the present cost?

It is patently impossible for freedom to be realized from the backs of others.  Yes, you may take advantage of additional freedoms granted to you by those virtuous enough to fight for your benefit, but without realizing the concept of personal sovereignty, you will fall back in line and squander those freedoms, even if still "available" to you.

In short, no we will not free them.  Hopefully they free themselves.

[presuming freedom is even a possible human construct as well as that anyone "frees" someone else solely for the sake of "freedom"...  getting into the whole altruism is mutually exclusive with the human condition issue...]

Isn't China about to crash?  Don't they control the North?  Isn't this all tied into international currency norms?

So...

1. China has loads of USD to unload, all worth less and less - unload fast.

2. US Bankstas needs to cover bad debts - austerity and price increase without social chaos.

Ergo...

1. Shooting war w/Pearl Harbor outrage.

2. China buys arms from 3rd party, gives USD.

3. 3rd party buys PROPERTY from US, giving dollars.

4. All balances, 'war' footing justifies extra labor w/austerity&property transfer?

This begs the questions:

1. Who is the third party?

2. Am I thinking like an 'one of them' yet?

Anyway, if this 'how to survive a nuke crap' results in an actual terror attack, I'm putting on my tinfoil hat.  Welcome to Wonderland!!  How was that looking glass?

And since when did thermonuclear designs from Los Alamos get in the hands of a Chinese agent?

And since when did North Korea exchange ideas and heavy metal with Iran?

There are some stark implications for a new war in Korea.  Seoul is within easy range of artillary which has been dug into caves along the DMZ.  There are thousands of these guns all zeroed in on Seoul.  It would take just a few minutes to put Seoul into caos and ruin (no nukes needed).  This is what the little troll has been using to keep the south in line all these years.  Only when the south can either sacrifice Seoul or have a valid plan to defend against the artillary will something break out.

Even if only 1 poofteenth of that article has any "truth" behind it the situation could ugly.

Clearly it would be over quite quickly against such rabble (just like in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan) but he could still inflict some serious collateral damage on his way out, and he seems intent to do just that from the article.

From the article:

Acting for supreme leader Kim Jong-il, the young general is one click away from issuing a long-awaited order to the Korean People's Army's (KPA) shiny and sleek, quick-response global strike force. This would see the torching of the bulwark of the US empire, the skyscrapers of New York City and other centers of metropolitan America.

While I don't generally take the prospect of war or threats lightly, this is almost funny, even as far as propaganda goes. "Shiny and sleek, quick-response global strike force"?

The last time something like this happened, there were over 100 airplanes over and around South Korea. It was a little misunderstanding about a tree in the Joint Security Area. That cost us a couple of dead Americans and several wounded American soldiers and South Korean laborers. I suspect most of you don't remember the "Tree War' in 1976. I do because I was there. Spent the next few weeks on alert, flying MiG CAPs, etc. until we figured that Kim Il Sung was just playing a game. Rather expensive on our part.

This Kim does not appear to be playing a game. His selection of Number Three son to be the next ruler of North Korea is going over like a turd in a punch bowl. His country is starving. He has had his personal accounts seized. He might even be staring at a "Bordeaux low level light" in the wine cellar. Every morning he wakes up he is well aware that he has cheated death again. I suspect that rather than die and not know what happens to the family country, he will choose the Gotterdamnerung ending and take it down in flames. It is a little late for retaliation today. Maybe later.

How real would a protracted battle be between these two countries?- Both are heavily armed and very small. No need for worry here. The Bernank will never let a war happen. It's well known that Mr. Kim has the world's finest engraving plates for $100 FRN's. As someone who has lived with this I fire you Fire crap since birth (Pakistan and India routinely indulge in this madness), I'd say this will flare up when it's meant to. Till then, chump action for the peanut gallery.

Notice all the resignations in SK. More of the same.

What is happening is the mood is getting set.

But an interesting time if you think about it. NATO is mostly frozen to a standstill. No fly, no drive. Chilled to the bone.

LMAO. Here's what's real: the exercises are over. NK will do precisely nothing.

What this means in realpolitik terms is that SK (and its ally, the US) effectively won this round. NK issued explicit threats. Russia and China implicitly backed them. The threats were empty. We called the bluff, and they were holding... nothing.

The only mystery for me is exactly who is responsible for the adult supervision evident in the US response. Obama? Doesn't seem like he has it in him. HRC? Impressive if true.

I refer our dear readership to an off-forgotten line of thinking, and I quote:

"Social mood declines generate increasing fear. As society becomes more fearful, many individuals yearn for the safety and order promised by strong, controlling leaders...Either way, fear creates the conditions under which such individuals gain control."

Who gains the most from a Korean conflict?

Mon, 12/20/2010 - 12:58 | 818686 HungrySeagull
HungrySeagull's picture

Let's say that if the North Korean Government has finally gotten a handout in exchange for a few concessions until the next time they need something else then we will keep this cycle going.

No one will gain from a Conflict. If there must be a fight, it must be South Korea and the United States and others who are friends that need to prevail.

Once that happens and the entire NK Government is removed, then all Koreas become Unifed as One Korea as the people want it to be.

That will be very gainful indeed and worth a war that is not yet finished.

However, China is a Nation Power we must deal with carefully to perhaps apply pressure to where it hurts the NK Government without war. China can do this easily.

I am concerned because we used to keep 250,000 Troops on Korea and now only 30K with more Marines and other forces within a few days sea or air delivery if we have time.

Seoul is lost if NK Artillery gets going. Seoul happens to sit in a valley that can funnel NK's Tanks and infantry into the city proper and then infect the rest of the place as happened before. Seoul contains very important industry. Samsung for example. They employ tens of thousands. If Samsung goes, then my samsung appliances at my house will be irreplaceable or not able to be repaired due to lack of parts in a few years when they wear out.

For those of you that scream buy american, I have only bought the correct appliances to do a job with the least amount of power and water use. American Appliances have yet to catch up to where they are as affordable. Sure you can buy good strong American appliances, but your power and water bill goes out the wazoo and it's not worth it.

If there must be war, then the motive to prosecute the war to the fullest MUST be Reunification of Both Koreas and the removal of the NK Government.

But we need China's cooperation. Last time, we had tens of thousands of Chinese to deal with and damn near got run out. But that is a another discussion for another day. However back then China DID give CLEAR warning she will invade if we got a certain distace northward.
