Lets face it, we're softer than the arabs. Otherwise the whole of europe would be burning. I understand why people want to film and take pics, but why are there people on the front line holding $1000 cameras? Can't be too desperate - why not sell it for a goat and move to the country?
Secondly, as the peaceful phase is over, people have to stop being surprised and indignant about these acts and come prepared. Maybe the best idea would be to track down where the police live, with some kind of annonymos hack and stick a little burning surprise through the letter box!

Dunno if anyone remembers this, but in 2006 a tape (was) leaked that had the Hungarian Prime Minister addressing his party and explicitly detailing the fact that they had cooked the books, falsified economic data, committed fraud towards internal budget as well as EU. To win the election they had just won. Extend 'n' pretend, explained on primetime TV news.
People were a bit (ahem) upset. Took to streets. Crashed into national state TV HQ. Then days of riots. Tear gas was so thick, thousands living in surrounding square blocks could barely stay at home for days.
Storm troopers were deputized (similar to TSA organization in terms of training, expertise, etc.),given riot gear and turned loose on anyone in the street, rioter or otherwise.
There was a bit of a fight, but opposition was not organized enough, anger wasn't quite strong enough, desperation was not complete enough...

Like CogDis often mentions, there will be no concession gained by 'asking' from those wielding power. And those wielding the power have any because we comply.
10-20% of the population participating (such as we saw in Tunesia and Egypt), with enough concentration in one place CAN BE sufficient. But it has to go beyond sitting in groups of a few dozen, waiting to be beaten to a pulp. Ultimately, the people need to hang together otherwise they will hang separately.

Apart from being an utter disgrace , this type of brutality has exactly the opposite effect as that intended by the authorities . Rather than silencing protesters it merely steels their resolve and attracts more people to the cause . Many of the recent uprisings in the Middle East and N.Africa only metastatized after the heavy handed tactics of the police/military .
One of the best examples of just how futile this approach to conflict resolution truly is can be seen currently in Uganda . The opposition leader , Kizza Besigye , who was thoroughly trounced in a recent presidential election , staged a few protests against government corruption and rising commodity prices . Numbers for these initial protests were very poor ; at some only dozens attended . However , when the police decided to use violent suppression protests turned into riots and dozens became thousands .
It amazes me that authorities can't seem to grasp the direct correlation between brutal crackdowns and protest size growth .
it'd be nice to see the people of the US fight back for once but let's hope it is against the political class, executives, bankers or the real button pushers and not against the SWAT Team who have a bunch of fun toys paid for with our tax dollars and a lot of free time. it is funny to me how Amerikans dont think it could every happen at home all the while political, economic, and global stability in general continue to erode. I clashed with the police...in the '70s, in a similar social situation that is now all but forgotten.
But we knew these bastards would come and come for trouble...and we were ready. Some of us would be tooled for trouble, and when they dared, when they felt assured....they found themselves surrounded, 5 to 1, 10 to 1...and they fell under the blows, and lost shields, batons and all, that would be used against them and then thrown at the end of the day.
They would fall..and didn't get up again, and their vehicles would burn under the petrol bombs...and THEY themselves would burn. They even tried with tracked vehicles... I even saw an M113 stopped dead on its track and burnt down with a coordinated attack.
After that, they quickly learnt to respect the crowds, they watched from afar, tried to be unobtrusive and unprovocative as they could.
They never tried firearms....good for all. But if they try that...and you are ready,they will quickly learn.
