Spy Wars: Russia Vows Revenge

Tyler Durden's picture

The cold war is back... At least in terms of espionage. As expected, yesterday's stunning press release of the spy ring bust which came at a very tense time in US-Russia relations, and is already drawing a response from Russia. According to Reuters, "Such actions are baseless and improper," the [Russia] Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "We do not understand what
prompted the U.S. Justice Department to make a public statement in the
spirit of Cold War espionage.
We deeply regret that all of this has happened
against the background of the relations reset declared by the U.S.
administration.
" Next steps - retaliation: "It's is a slap in the face to Barack Obama,"
said Anatoly Tsyganok, a political analyst at Moscow's Institute of
Political and Military Analysis. Russia will
inevitably follow Cold War etiquette and uncover an equal number of U.S.
spies, he said.
" All this is happening as Bill Clinton is in Moscow today, chatting with Vladimir Putin. We wonder just how reminiscent of Cold War propaganda those talks will end up being.

The chief spokesman for Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin told Reuters he had no comment on the spying allegations and said
the allegations were unlikely to be discussed during Putin's meeting on
Tuesday with former U.S. President Bill Clinton in Moscow.

As for those who have been curious to find out who else may have gotten infiltrated in the US (assuming of course the FBI's case is more than just a red herring), one place to start may be the LinkedIn profile of one Cindy Murphy, CFP, who according to rumors is the very same Russian-Irish girl playing interference for the Russian gold policy team. Something tells us Cindy's 102 contacts at LinkedIn are sweating quite a bit right now.

Obviously there are renegade factions in our intelligence community and the state department, with their own set of agenda.

Or maybe there is a renegade intelligence community, state department, military/industrial complex and political class. And on the other side of the equation, some small factions of sanity within these bodies trying to derail the plans of the sociopaths from within.

We must never assume that sanity lay within the political heads of the established branches of government or the military/industrial complex. For if we do, we will live to regret it.

Yes you are.  It is the polite thing to do.

Governments from all over the world have intelligence operations in key countries. It's a fact.  A large part of the work of foreign diplomats is gathering poitical and economic intelligence.  Many operatives are not identified as diplomats.  All EXTREMELY routine. It's tolerated because as long as we all know what the other is up to we can feel more at ease - it actually promotes peaceful coexistance.

The USA does this ALL the time, and is doing it right now. Thus, there is a gentle divided between economic and political intelligence gathering and offensive intelligence operations. In the end the FBI would have to decide if these people were a real threat. They apparently thought so.  Now the Russians will proceed to deport an equal number of identified American intelligence operatives that they know are out there, but did not bother to bring in.

This could be simpler than it looks. Both the US and Russia look back with nostalgia to the days when they were the political poles of the world, and other nations lined up behind one or the other. Now those nations are taking matters into their own hands, relegating the term 'superpower' to history. Former players on both sides would love to bring back their glory days.

"Worse even than the long, slow grind along the bottom described in the foregoing section is a sudden catastrophic collapse. In that context, the greatest threat to U.S. national security is the destruction of the U.S. dollar as an international medium of exchange. By destruction we do not mean total elimination but rather a devaluation of 50 percent or more versus broad-based indices of purchasing power for goods, services, and commodities and the dollar’s displacement globally by a more widely accepted medium.

The intention of Central Bank of Russia would be to cause a 50 percent overnight devaluation of the U.S. dollar and displace the U.S. dollar as the leading global reserve currency. The expected market value of gold resulting from this exchange offer is $4,000 per ounce, i.e., the market clearing price for gold as money on a one-for-one basis. Russia could begin buying gold “at the market” (i.e., perhaps $1,000 per ounce initially); however, over time its persistent buying would push gold-as-money to the clearing price of $4,000 per ounce. However, gold selling would stop long before Russia was out of cash as market participants came to realize that they preferred holding gold at the new higher dollar-denominated level. Gold will actually be constant, e.g., at one ounce = 25 barrels of oil; it is the dollar that depreciates.

Another important concept is the idea of setting the global price by using the marginal price. Russia does not have to buy all the gold in the world. It just has to buy the marginal ounce and credibly stand ready to buy more. At that point, all of the gold in the world will reprice automatically to the level offered by the highest bidder, i.e., Russia.

Basically, the mechanism is to switch the numeraire from dollars to gold; then things start to look different and the dollar looks like just another repudiated currency as happened in Weimar and Zimbabwe. Russia's paper losses on its dollar securities are more than compensated for by (a) getting paid in gold for its oil, (b) the increase in the value of its gold holdings (in dollars), and (c) watching the dollar collapse worldwide."

I have said this before, I mean it literally, THERE IS NO ONE IN CHARGE.

If you are on a runaway train, does it matter if the engineer is there or not? The perception will be that the pace is picking up, you may notice the car swaying a little, but things will seem normal enough. Obama may be in the engine room, but there is nothing he can do. Meanwhile, others know it and are trying to derail the train, before impact, to lessen the damage. They will all fail.

So let me get this correct. We arrest a few clowns playing spy for mother Russia. It seems their primary goal was to live the good life in the USA while shoveling meaningless "information" back to their hapless handler back in Russia. All the while the handler is wishing he could have gotten the assignment. Ya gotta love the excuse for buying a house in the US. It makes us fit in. The handler in Russia must have been livid he was getting a pitiful salary and living in a dreary crapola apartment. The spys have cars and he is stuck walking to the subway every day.

Look for a bunch of American spys to get popped for the trade. You can be sure the huge number of Americans living in Russia have a few skeletons that could be used against them. How many Americans living with virtual sex slaves could they pull off the streets?

Russia is not Iran's best buddy. China is. The Russians have oil and gas. The Russians have been stealing from the Iranians for years promising to deliver all kinds of hardware. Every time the US or Israel rattle their sabers it spikes oil prices and Russia makes more money. Russia also sells reactor fuel and are pissed the Iranians want to make their own. Russia wants to control all the oil and gas pipelines throughout the region. The Iranians have fought these plans tooth and nail. So again Russia is not Iran's best buddy, China is.

PS, Russian and Israeli defense contractors have have had very strong ties for over 20 years. They jointly produce multiple weapons and surveliance platforms together. Ask the Indian and Chinese militarys who have bought them. Both Russian and Israeli technicians are required for training and support.

I was under the impression that such spy games (we've caught you, you're out) are conducted on a hush-hush basis most of the time. So do we write down this particular incident as some faction bitchslapping Obama, or is it just one step among many to increase politico-militray tensions, so that the military-industrial complex can sleep soundly at night in the knowledge that all is well in the world and conflicts will continue to erupt.
