The Story Of Stuff
Great clip explaining the lifecycle in the materials economy. Now you can buy that fifth iPod you don't need, and know where it came from, where it will go, and what prompted you to buy it. Hat tip Günter.

Am I right in believing that low interest rates cause a great deal of 'over consumption'? If money is being debased, why not spend it?
Damn right! Debased money loses value just sitting in your pocket... or wherever.
Don't forget this related lecture by Dr. Bartlett. There are real limits to growth.

That's a good lecture but he won't get anywhere with his facts and mathematics, this is America and facts have little place here. Similarly, Elizabeth Warren won't get anywhere with her facts in her excellent "The Coming Collapse of the Middle Class" lecture:

One of the Largest groups on the planet is the consumer.
For the first time in decades the consumer has the power to change all the rules only problem is they don't know it yet. We are halfway there already for a Global consumer strike and if it where to succeed it would be a bloodless revolution.
An interesting Doco on the consumer
"The century of Self" is a 4 part series done by the BBC in 2002.

hey guys - funny to watch the link to this video side by side with a nice banner from littlewoods, that tells you to "update your autumn look" and buy all the brands you always ever wanted to buy...
but that is by the by - I guess it provides some liquidity to finance project mayhem
shhhh
Yeah, STFU dood.
On the whole not a bad video, but they need to hire a sound man (LOUD, and slightly distorted...)... X/
...Not to mention that their stating 50% of our gov't spending is on the military is a flat out fuckin' lie. It's 16.85% of the FEDERAL budget. If you figure state budgets in as part of the total government spending, that number goes down.
Oh, yeah, and 4% of our original forests left is a gross distortion. We may have only 4% of original growth, but trees are cut down and constantly *re-grown*.
On second thought, this video sucks dead dog ass!!!
It's clearly made by people seduced by the Malthusian lie of lack and deprivation. WTF, Tyler?!
OK...
I'm going to post this AGAIN. For some reason, it didn't make it here the first time.
On the whole not a bad video. They could use a sound man (too loud & distorted), but not bad.
...But stating 50% of our gov't spending is on the military is a flat out freakin' lie. It's 16.85% of the FEDERAL budget (which is still IMO too high). If you figure state budgets in as part of the total spending, that? number goes down.
Oh, yeah, and 4% of our original forests left is a gross distortion. Forests are constantly *re-grown*. The way it is stated they make it seem like we've clear cut 96% of the trees from the land. This is clearly not the case.
...Y'know, on second thought, this video sucks dead dog as$!!!
It's clearly made by people seduced by the Malthusian lie. WTF, Tyler?! You just baiting us or what?
the part about the big master mind behind consumerism as an economic model was good. It is nice to know who is responsible for my uncontrollable(borderline sexual) urge to shop. I knew it couldn't have been me that is responsible for maxing out my credit cards in a zombie like state. "Must do what advertisements tell me. BUY AARGH"
hoping people will come to their senses is just polishing brass on the titanic.
oh I get it, TD is just seeing how many space monkeys he has.
If the applicant agrees with the video he or she is clearly incapable of critical thinking and needs to submit $300 personal burial money.
"The government exits to watch out for us and take care of us?"
It's sort of sad that a reasonably articulate and educated person can be so wrong.
i'm a bit skeptical about where the commentator derives the "99% of what we consume ends up as trash 6 months later" i imagine that oil/gas/food/water alone constitute for at least 1% of all total "stuff". is that "stuff" being considered in this count? if so, it's obvious why most of that "stuff" no longer exists after 6 months, because the first two were actually transferred into the force of movement and latter two used in the production of ATP in our bodies.
