Streaming Video From Syntagma Square - First Day Of Greek General Strike

Tyler Durden's picture

It's time for your daily Syntagma (not to be confused with Stigmata...yet) square live video feed, where things already are starting to have a far more violent tone compared to the primarily peaceful protests so far this year, courtesy of a substantially larger police presence as over 5,000 cops are expected to join the festivities. The protest marks the first day of the previously reported 48 hour general strike which will culminate with tomorrow's decision on the 5 year mid-term austerity plan.

More details on the strike from Athens News:

The strike is set to disrupt or halt most public services, with doctors, ambulance drivers, journalists and even actors at a state-funded theater joining the protest, which is to continue Wednesday.

Flights will be grounded both days during stoppages by air traffic controllers between 8:00 a.m. and midday and between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (0500-0900 GMT and 1500-1900 GMT).

The Greek union position on the proposed austerity is not precisely surprising:

Unions are angry at a new €28 billion austerity programme that would slap taxes on minimum wage earners and other struggling Greeks, following months of other cuts that have seen unemployment surge to more than 16 percent.

The package and implementation law must be passed in parliamentary votes this week so the European Union and the International Monetary Fund release the next installment of Greece's €110 bn bailout loan. Without it, Greece faces the prospect next month of becoming the first eurozone country to default on its debts - a potentially disastrous event that could drag down European banks and affect other financially troubled European countries.

"These measures are a massacre for workers' rights. It will truly be hell for the working man. The strike must bring everything to a standstill," said Thanassis Pafilis, a lawmaker with the Greek Communist Party that will lead one of Tuesday's main rallies.

What was surprising was the fact that Greece is now openly leaving the door open for another renegotiation, something the EU will certainly not enjoy:

"I call on Europe, for its part, to give Greece the time and the terms it needs to really pay off its debt, without strangling growth, and without strangling its citizens," he said.

Papandreou's new finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, said the government acknowledged the new cuts were "unfair." He said Greece wants to conclude negotiations for a second bailout by the end of the summer "at the latest," and he urged opposition parties to abandon their opposition to the austerity programme.

"These measures will take us from running budget deficits to achieving primary surpluses. It's a difficult but necessary step," Venizelos said.

The Socialists, with traditionally strong ties to the striking unions, have struggled to contain a party revolt against austerity.

Papandreou has a majority of five seats in parliament, but at least one Socialist lawmaker has said he will vote against the government on Wednesday, with another dissenter undecided - prompting dire warnings from senior government officials.

We will bring more as the day develops.

as you can see in lots of fotos here www.antinews.gr

most people are in Syntagma with their open faces and do NOT wear HOODS even in the middle of the tear gasses !!!

Thus they demand NOT to demonstrate WITH hoodS.

The hooded have to be isolated.

It's an excuse that they wear hoods because of the tear gasses.

Please communicate this message to the world.

Greek Indignados say NO to the hoods and the hooded.

there are the citizens, the everyday people and the hooded

the hooded wish not to show their face,

who is under a hood?

is it just an anarchist?
 is it an undercover policeman?

is it a foreign agent MAYBE TURK OR EVEN WORSE... acting for the interests of his country? ! ? !

I know what this is all about - it is about oil and pipelines and trade routes and the Middle East - precisely why Greece was let into the Euro in the first place as it failed on every economic test at the time of entry.

I agree there will be infiltrators but surely it is very clear when it is infiltrator and when not - for instance , why would anyone through a molotov at a bazaar if they were not a infiltrator ? Throwing the odd rock and molotov at the police in front of parliament that should be fine - whats the matter with that ? Like I said in my other post - the four killed last year was an unfortunate accident and one off and needs to be treated as such..

As usual main stream media is actually the problem by parotting whatever the government and police want them to therefore you have the infiltrator issue.

I apologise for calling you an idiot at the same time I think your argument is illogical and deeply flawed.

Tue, 06/28/2011 - 10:07 | 1408577 allenaki
allenaki's picture

Ι accept the apology, but probably, there is something you do not know.

These leftists idiots have publicly commited they made this attack into the bazaar and asked for forgiveness.

Well, in my eyes, this is a DEAD END for these hooded.

I insist about undercover hooded (unknown number).

All leftists are NOT  "paid agents" but the infiltration exists. The extend of the infiltration is unknown, though...

Tue, 06/28/2011 - 10:12 | 1408594 allenaki
allenaki's picture

And, given the abovementioned APOLOGY of these leftists who burnt the flower woman, can you tell with CONFIDENCE that they are really PURE leftists who apologized sincerely, or are they infiltrators who posted a fake apologize?

Can you?...

Tue, 06/28/2011 - 10:33 | 1408691 Corduroy
Corduroy's picture

I personally just do not believe it (that those that threw the molotov and made the apology ever had honest intentions) - though the newspapers and tv will accept the apology as gospel and turn it to suit themselves, and generalisations are very powerful tools. It is a very good example of how populations have given away most of the rights they have ever won - and how it is almost possibly too late to ever get them back.

In a speech made at the Reichstag in 1941, Hitler expressed his admiration for the Greek resistance,h[›] saying of the campaign: "Historical justice obliges me to state that of the enemies who took up positions against us, the Greek soldier particularly fought with the highest courage. He capitulated only when further resistance had become impossible and useless." The Führer also ordered the release and repatriation of all Greek prisoners of war, as soon as they had been disarmed, "because of their gallant bearing."[133] According to Hitler's Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, the Führer "wanted to give the Greeks an honorable settlement in recognition of their brave struggle, and of their blamelessness for this war: after all the Italians had started it."i[›] Inspired by the Greek resistance during the Italian and German invasions, Churchill said, "Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks".[134] In response to a letter from George VI dated 3 December 1940, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated that "all free peoples are deeply impressed by the courage and steadfastness of the Greek nation",k[›] and in a letter to the Greek ambassador dated 29 October 1942, he wrote that "Greece has set the example which every one of us must follow until the despoilers of freedom everywhere have been brought to their just doom."[135]

Hundreds of years ago people rebelled against governments for abuse of authority, for excessive taxation, for trade embargos, for religious or cultural supression.

Now they only rebel when they can no longer deal with the cognitive dissonance that comes from expecting everything for free but not wanting to do the work or sell assets to fund their lives of extravagance.

Nevertheless, let me be very clear: if elected, I will have but one thing in mind when it comes to providing support to a euro-area member: ensuring full consistency with the Fund’s mission and providing for good stewardship of the Fund’s resources. I will not shrink from the necessary candor and toughness in my discussions with the European leaders, on the contrary. There is no room for benevolence when tough choices must be made, and there is no option that does not start with difficult but necessary adjustments by the Greek authorities to restore the sustainability of public finances and to rebuild the country's competitiveness.

here the thing ....
the money supply is debt. first it is borrowed
into existence to the point of credit destruction
then stolen into existence by elites to finance the
final fraud.
either way, it is a failed ponzi scheme in full saturation,
the perfect instrument to do leveraged raids of sovereigns
stupid and corrupt enough to fall into the trap.
self induced monetary chaos can't end well for those
of us who don't appreciate the significance of the
nature of the money system itself. it is an energy
extraction tool and a whip sold as a medium of exchange.

      Keeping Hope Alive

We read so much negative news about whats going on its hard to find anything positive to get excited about. So when I saw this article I thought I'd post a brief summary and link:

New Car Engine Sends Shock Waves Through Auto Industry By: malterwitty
Tags:

Despite shifting into higher gear within the consumer's green conscience, hybrid vehicles are still tethered to the gas pump via a fuel-thirsty 100-year-old invention: the internal combustion engine.

However, researchers at Michigan State University have built a prototype gasoline engine that requires no transmission, crankshaft, pistons, valves, fuel compression, cooling systems or fluids. Their so-called Wave Disk Generator could greatly improve the efficiency of gas-electric hybrid automobiles and potentially decrease auto emissions up to 90 percent when compared with conventional combustion engines.

I hope it does pass, so that the people can then storm the parliament and hang all the traitors inside.

Lets see what Ollie Rehn's Plan B to that will be, the prick.

I bet there has been some "EU-democracy" at work behind the scenes to change his mind. Well, i hope the greeks will remember who voted and what.

Game Over for any hope it doesn't pass.

Not that they can implement it anyway. It's rather difficult to meet your GDP goals for austerity when your unions are all in the streets.

What the politicians in parliament decide has become pretty irrelevant now that the mob rules the street.

The tail is trying to wag the dog, but the dog is not impressed.

Time to grow up

I grew up in the diaspora, my parents having left Greece after the civil war because my dad could not go to college in Greece, being labeled a communist. Back then Greece was not an equal opportunity country where each citizen could pursue his or her dreams. So he left, got educated abroad, started a family and built a life. Millions left then, and continue to leave our beautiful country because there still is no opportunity for the young. Greeks outside of Greece are wealthier and better educated -- why is that? Every year I return to my ancestral home and am amazed at the extent to which we as a nation have abandoned the concept of personal responsibility. The only thing that we think is not the government’s problem appears to be our sex lives. Everything else must be solved by the «government.» They must protect industries and protect professionals from competition; ensure that it is who you know as well as what you know that counts. You need “mason” not competence to succeed. The few elite families own the entire place. We have allowed families to own the political space -- out of 9 million Greeks, could we not find a leader who is not the great-grandson or grandson of some other political leader? Our prime-ministerial office looks more like a dynastic piggy bank than a democratically held office. The bottom line is if you are a go-getter and young, you’d better get going to London, New York, anywhere but your motherland -- and that is sad -- so many years after our civil war, young men and women have to leave to grow their lives.
All in all, we as a nation have failed to grow up. We behave like kids. We are broke because we borrowed money, not from other «European» governments, but from the savings of hardworking men and women all over Europe who naively assumed we had grown up, to pay for a lifestyle that is not supported by our work ethic or economic structure. That is the cold fact. To all the protestors outside parliament -- grow up. Millions more Greeks will leave the country now, because they cannot afford to pay for another 30 years for you to keep enjoying the free lunch. Grow up -- be responsible for your actions. Grow up -- you cannot responsibly teach your children that the «Greek» way is the appropriate way to live -- the many freeloading off the efforts of the few -- it is not sustainable. The many not paying taxes but stealing money from the state which in turn pulls the wool over the few taxpayers’ and dumb foreigners’ eyes. Your kids cannot be the Greeks you are -- they will fail, there is no one left to steal from anymore. Grow up -- you have sold your children’s future to the highest bidder to ensure your cushy lifestyle, overpaid civil servants and protectionist economy. Grow up -- tell your kids these facts and apologise to them for the dastardly inheritance you have given them. Your political elite gave you what you wanted for 30 years -- a free ride. Now it is over. Grow up my compatriots, grow up fast and own your own destiny, otherwise would the last Greek to leave Greece switch off the lights?

Well said, inteligent and prepared people are leaving greece and Spain

because they can't find a proper job if they don't know someone on the inside,

many with university degrees go to work for the goverment  as clerks just looking for a fixed income.
