Tepco Dumps 11,500 Tons of Radioactive Water Into the Pacific

George Washington's picture

Kyodo news reports:

Tokyo
Electric Power Co. on Monday took the unprecedented measure of dumping
10,000 tons of low-level radioactive water in the Pacific Ocean from a
facility at its crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex to
make room for the storage of more highly contaminated water, which is
hampering restoration work at the plant.

***

Nishiyama also
said that it had become necessary to release 1,500 tons of
groundwater, also containing radioactive materials, found near the Nos.
5 and 6 reactor turbine buildings out of concern that the water could
drown safety-related equipment.

Of course, the government said there was "no major health risk", even though:

The level of radioactive substances in the water is up to 500 times the legal limit permitted for release in the environment.

Of course, the government said there was "no major health risk"...

...not that can be directly linked to Fukushima, anyway.

Jap Pols to the walking dead:  "Oh, you have cancer?  A lot of your family has cancer?  And in your neighborhood too?  You want compensation, huh?

Can you prove it was due to Fukushima?  A lot of people have cancer..."

Who can you trust with this nuclear fallout ? Seriously . I have heard both sides where this is extremely dangerous ,not just for the Japanese but for the world and then there are others saying there is no problem . I am not a nuclear physicist and the info is confusing . Is there particles all over the world from this being ingested by children that will kill them or some of them ? Or is there no threat to anyone .

Looking at track records of nuclear disasters and how they have been handled in the past it seems what is happening is probably more dangerous than the worlds gov'ts admit but what I want to know is how dangerous ?

As for dumping into the pacific ocean it sounds like a pretty easy way to surround an island with radioactivity to me . I think poor decisions are being made in desperation .

There is NO safe dosage of radioactivity. Once the stuff is dumped in the ocean or in the air it goes all over the world. Do you know why 1/2 of all deaths are caused by cancer?

Government and nuclear industry experts will tell you, there is no danger and they can prove it. To them, it is only dangerous if you drop dead within hours of exposure. An increased incidence of cancer and birth defects don't count because YOU CAN"T PROVE any one case was caused by THEIR negligence.

What was the alternative to this plan?  If there was no alternative, why is this seen as a "bad" thing?

... Stuff happens...

Canucklehead, while this may sound like the best option in a bunch of bad choices, I'm not real comfortable putting this much toxic crap in the ocean.  Seems more like a last ditch effort and my guess is that this won't be the last time that they dump into the ocean, but probably every time their containers get full.

Bring to Antartica?  Let it freeze?  I don't know, just tossing ideas out.

now your octopus has 16 legs...

It's all good though - now you can go swimming any time of year and get that warm glow only solar radiation used to give you...

Well, look at all the jobs created by monitoring the entire pacific ocean for radiation levels - definitely a plus to economic activity...

The japanese miss godzilla - they're trying to bring him back....

(i'll be here all week, or until the apocalypse, whichever comes first)

But isn't this better than expected ? I mean they needed to create room for even more toxic stuff. How about they dumped the more toxic stuff instead ?
