The Tide Is Turning: Call Your Senator NOW!

George Washington's picture

The tide is now turning towards real financial reform:

  • In a
major development, Senator Harry Reid is now supporting
breaking up the giant banks and auditing the Fed
  • Number two Senate majority leader, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), came out Tuesday in favor of a far-reaching
amendment that would break up big banks and cap their size (the
    Brown-Kaufman amendment)
  • Senator
    Feingold has announced
that he will filibuster and financial regulation which does not
    include serious banking reform

I asked a friend on the hill
- a top aide to a very important Congress member - whether people would
be wasting their time by calling their Senator. I explained that many
people called and demanded that the U.S. not invade Iraq, but that
Congress just ignored us. I said that many people feel that traditional
political activism, like phonecalls, can't work, as the level of
political corruption is too high.

He responded that given the bipartisan support of many congress
people and the American people for financial reform, this is very
different from Iraq.

He urged everyone to call their Senators and demand the giant
banks be broken up and the Fed be audited.

Senator Sanders' bill
to audit the Fed will probably be voted on today. Please call
your Senator
now.

Okay...I'll take the other side of the trade.  Calls to cap the size of US banks and other limits on their growth are insane.

The view is based on the foolishness of Too big too fail, which I see as code for too complicated for us to regulate.  The fact that the feds don't think they can come up with a structure to properly regulate financial service companies does not mean banks have to be broken up.  I'm all for proper regulation and wonder why Kaufman et al can't find experts who can come in and propose a way to create the sunshine needed so that idiots at the SEC, CFTC, FDIC, etc. can actually understand what's going on.

Sorry guys, but I don't think this is a good idea.  But what do I know, I think the fact that the feds have allowed illegal aliens to flood the country, which is also a failure in federal policy, should mean we force these people to register as aliens, allow them to stay and get them to pay taxes!

What disturbs me most about these debates is that they are based on massive federal legis/regulatory errors.  Rather than admitting that the Feds were wrong, they punish the private sector.

We need these banks to create real capital otherwise the same idiots that want to cap their size will create some ridiculous federal scheme, based on deficit spending which is code for more Treasury debt, and we are all going to wake up one day and realize we are Greece!

No matter who you call... the fact remains that they (on average) collect 10 times more monies from the lobby's, special interest's and pac's that we the people pay them...

Click this link and see who owns your legislator(s)... http://www.opensecrets.org/

The really good news is, that your tax dollars are used for bailouts, which in turn the bailout funds are used to lobby against your better interests... I offer...

Really? The Banks are using profits to pay for their Lobby? not the 0% Fed Window?

So that I am clear... 2008 was a vintage year for Banks? they made soooooooooooooooooooooo much money on 2008 that in the first 3 months of 2009... they could drop $104.7 MILLION DOLLARS?

Dear C4L Member,

Any time you find out Senator Chris Dodd is in support of something – watch out.

According to our sources on the Hill, Senator Bernie Sanders caved to pressure from the White House and Chris Dodd and stripped out the Paul-Grayson language from his Fed transparency amendment.

What Sanders is now proposing is essentially the Watt amendment we all opposed last year in the House. In addition, it supports just a one-time audit.

Talking Points Memo reports that, “In order to allay some of the White House's and the Fed's concerns, Sanders has agreed to limit the scope of what the Government Accountability Office would be allowed to audit--but his plan will still require thorough review of all the Fed's emergency lending, beginning December 1, 2007.”

Call Senator Sanders’ office at (202) 224-5141 and tell him how you feel about this last-minute sell out.

Click here for contact information for your senators and urge them to oppose the Sanders Sellout. Tell them to put back in the original Paul/Grayson language.

A vote could come even late tonight or early tomorrow. Let your senators know where you stand right away.

The American people deserve a real audit.

In Liberty,

John Tate

President

Rioting?  Maybe if Dancing with the Stars is cancelled.    Nothing is going to change, until there are shortages, whether it's food, gasoline, health care (all coming eventually by the way.).   But this audit the fed is funny.   If they do pass a law, it will be written by the lapdogs of the elite in arcane bullshit language that lawyers can't even interpret, that in the end will give them more power not less.  And if somehow they do pass a law with teeth,  the Fed will rollout some magic green ledger they've been preparing all along, that will make Alice and Wonder Land look like a non-fiction book.   See everythings fine, go back to watching American Idol and Mixed Martial Arts.

Listen to Sanders speech in the Senate today....Fantastic !

Personally, I think that if a watered down version of the bill passes there will be major rioting in the streets of America much the same way as there is rebellion in Greece right now.  A  No vote against the Sanders or  Grayson / Paul bill  will be the final straw for all Americans.  I am sure there are many Senators that realize that a NO vote against this amendment will be a NO vote against their re-election.

Rioting by the US sheeple?  Most of them don't even know the Federal Reserve exists, never mind what it is supposed to do, or what it actually does, or who runs it.  Most of them consider Ron Paul and Bernie Sanders nutjobs (that is, if they've ever heard of them as well).

I use my Mom as well as most of the people in my office as the informal sheeple poll.  My Mom is a lifelong registered Republican, who occasionally voted for the Dummies in her youth.  You'd think she'd be a perfect Ron Paul convert.  Wrong--she thinks he's the Devil's Spawn.  Most of the people in my office have no clue about either Bernie Sanders or Ron Paul, and I work inside the Beltway for a major .Gov agency.  (Full disclosure:  in a previous life, I ran a medium-sized industrial company in New Jersey and Chigago)

My problem with financial reform?  It's the same corrupt cast of "elected elites" that are behind it that largely caused the problems to begin with.  Chris "countrywide" Dodd?    He should be in jail.

Another reason, anything "reform" is a 4 letter word now.  The idiots in DC will only screw it up with unintended consequences like health care deform.  They'll pull the old, just wait til we pass it so you can see all the goodies in it.   the devil is on the details.

Interference already from Obama on Sanders amendment. If his popularity rating ins;t at zero yet it soon will be.......

White House Explains Opposition To Fed Audit Amendment, No Veto Threat

Sam Stein
Sam Stein
stein@huffingtonpost.com | HuffPost Reporting

The Obama administration offered to date its most direct opposition to an amendment to Wall Street reform legislation that would allow for an audit of the Federal Reserve, though administration officials declined to say whether the president would veto a bill that included the proposal.

In a briefing on Thursday, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Neal Wolin expressed concern that the amendment, authored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), would damage the independence of the Fed -- either in perception or practice. The administration has pushed a side amendment that Wolin said would accomplish the goals of Sander's proposal but would not bring politics into monetary policy.

"We oppose the Sanders amendment in its current form," Wolin said. "Transparency of Fed is critically important... But we also think it is important that the Federal Reserve board have independence. We think that countries that have had... the perception of political influence in their central banks have had real problems."

Would the president veto a bill that included the amendment? "We are continuing to work with Senator Sanders, Senator [Chris] Dodd (D-CT) and others to make sure we can accomplish these twin objectives," Wolin replied. "We will move forward in those discussions before we get to discussions about vetoes."

Over the past few weeks and months, Sanders has done yeoman work lining up support behind his proposal. He had been in regular contact with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel about the issue before learning on Thursday (via the New York Times) that the White House has pushed an alternate amendment as a means of killing his one.

On Thursday, nevertheless, the senator received a major endorsement in the form of explicit backing from Majority Leader Harry Reid. As for the White House's concerns, the senator has stressed repeatedly that he is not interested in politicizing central banking, merely getting a clear sense about where the $2 trillion in low-interest loans paid by the Fed actually went since the recession began.

Asked about this pushback, Wolin again insisted that the White House supports the spirit of the provision but not the legislative language. He said the administration also wants to know who received bailout funds. But, he added, "we think that is an incredibly important principle... what we want to make sure at the same time is that the provision doesn't in an unintended way get into the area of monetary policy that encroaches on the central bank's independence.
