Time-Lapse Video Of Food Stamp Participation Rates During The "New Normal"

Tyler Durden's picture

With everyone chanting the praises of the "better than abysmal" economy, we decided to post a time lapse video (since cartoons are all that stand an even remote chance of attracting some attention) prepared by John Lohman,
of just how the New Normal has been progressing, both since the starts
of the great depression in December 2007, and more importantly, since
the beginning of the "end" of the recession. The result may surprise you. As John points out: food stamps - the only thing keeping 43 million Americans from going postal." Hopefully the end of extended unemployment benefits coming December 1 won't be that first one additional straw on the camel's back that leads to a full blown fracture.

I yelled over at my wife to read your post and give me a read on it, and her response was to laugh, then ask me why I was wasting my time responding to idiots. Of course, she is a black fucking Indian bitch who is ruining the world for all us white folks...hell, I tell her that constantly, but she just laughs and points out that all our wonderful American corporations shift their human-intensive business over to India....so if it bad for Indians to take the business, how bad is it that your own corporations are the ones that make it happen? She just does not see things our way.....She does not understand why we hate Indiands for doing things that American companies do not want Americans to do. She does not understand the "cheap" thing....she is rich, that is why I married her. Well...she is also hot as well... that helped, but, shit, that was 30 years ago. Anyway, she is still laughing at you...but she is racist against white people...for instance, she hates my mother, and Rush Limbaugh. She loves Sarah palin, although she is jealous about me spending time with sarah in those igloos. And, Assfire, she loves to get shit free that Americans will have to pay for in the future. Tonight, I am going to spank her for that. I am sure you will approve.

No, we just have half hillbilly/half East Indian kids. They have brown skin and blue eyes. Go figure. I know it is not about race, but you gave me the opportunity to make it kinda so, so I could write like a fool and post my general nonsense...thank you for that. No...the only kids I have is from her. We married young.....I actually had to pay her father for her ( I was living and working in India at the time)..a Dowry, I think it is called. Her father was instrumental in introducing wireless networks into Indian cities...so he has more money that he can count, but that hapenned after we married. She really does not hate you...she is kind of a conservative kinda bitch (now that she is rich). She used to be sweet, now she reminds me of Ann Coultier. I will spank her for that too.

Your general nonsense was freakin hilarious..Now that you mention it 2 of my kids are black as coal. I think I'll work less and start spanking my wife also. Is it good to scold them while spanking them?? She never seems to listen ever. Should have never married that black bitch... but her Dad paid me to marry her. She has turned quite liberal lately I think maybe she wants me to quit working all together; sadly I don't qualify for assistance...sucks to be self employed. I guess if we have 3 more kids and I move out she can get enough government entitlements for us. Anyway being rich sucks so maybe I'll just fire everyone and hang out on line with shit blizzard playing games online all day.. Man, I feel so stupid for working, much less going through all the BS of owning a business.

Xbox or PlayStation?? I guess it is the new American Dream.

My friend, governments will always steal to give to their voters. As long as we have the vote...how do you change that? Votes are bought, either by advertisements or by direct purchase....how do we, American citizens, change what the Constitution has placed in front of us as "our system?" Most Congressmen and Senators are millionairs.....they almost have to be. Where does that leave us? It leaves us voting for people who will NEVER legislate themselves into the poorhouse. Our system is fucking us, and we have no way, outside of revolution, to change it.

1st time I mentioned it in 35 weeks... Find something in my history.. post it here.

My comments are about the illegal seizure of funds from the working people and the net affect on our society since the inception of food stamps.

It is a bit ridiculous not one person can dispute the facts only name call.  I clearly have disdain for both parties but what I see here is the standard boilerplate leftist attack by labelling me a racist. Shit, am I not allowed to point out anything about my own race because I'm white?? You people are the intolerant.

But you still pissed me off by introducing race into this discussion of how socialist central planners have sacked the middle class to create a country -- nay, a whole western world! -- of teat-suckers!

For the record, I get equally angry whenever the Repulsive RedNeck, or the Socialist Snowball, try to divert threads into a name-calling match between D & R ... or when some other retard blames it all on the joos, the mooslims or the chinks. It's the fucking democratic socialist system that is the problem, FFS! ... it was destined to fail from the start -- in exactly the same way that the fiat ponzi was destined to fail from the start.

So I tried an apple but it wouldn't stick to the envelope. Then I tried an orange, it wouldn't stick. An avocado was worthless. Celery was slippery.

So I went back to the banana and smashed the banana on the envelope. Some smashed banana did stick to the envelope, so I put the letter in the mail box. My letter came back two days later marked "Insufficient postage". How many bananas do I need to smash on the envelope to be "sufficient postage"?

Once the welfare state ends, Rand will have orgasms in her grave.

I hope you randian humanoids are proud of yourselves.

Back to the dark ages, then, is it?  Shame, there was such potential in humanity, and we managed to even screw that up; I have a feeling we need another few [hundred] thousand years to evolve as a species before we might be capable of utilizing more of our potential, if we happened to evolve in such a way, that is.  From the looks of things, we might as well be heading backwards.

And not by my standards, no.  I "see" what we're capable of as a whole, and we throw it all away on stupid bullshit.  We're in a sad state:  if you think we're doing 'well,' you're not looking hard enough.  We're a society of spectacle, symbolism, and greed--we squander what we have and what we're capable of: thoroughly disappointing.

Look at what a great nation we have become since it's inception in 1964; People don't need to get married or work much anymore- its an awesome life being dependent on the government everything and living in shitholes. The ladder of success is only climbed by stepping on the rungs of government entitlements.

I'm fairly certain I worded my initial post to seem a bit offensive to the Randian philosophy of narcissism; I don't think we're doing enough to progress society: the modern American, or rather, western culture is a psychopathic one: sink or swim.  I don't believe that should be the case.  Every man has it within himself to become something more, but we snuff those ambitions out because of our failure as a society, as a civilization.

Everything in this society is a disgusting money grab, people are incarcerated for profit, our judicial system is based around profit, the pig cops operate for profit.  We're a society based on ever-increasing greed: and that is something Rand would love.  And I say: fuck Ayn Rand.

Sun, 11/21/2010 - 06:13 | 744103 AssFire
AssFire's picture

No, not offensive at all. The individualism shit is bunk- just look at how fucked up China is now with all that western culture / free enterprise shit. They were so much happier not to mention greener and ecofriendly before all that "modernizing".

I am with you brother, we need to get more progressive. I remember people ruining their childhood studying and working summer jobs so they could be rich when they got older. They weren't keeping it real. It is so cool that we are getting even with those bastards who made all that money- the only reason they have so much is because the government does not take enough; we know they cheated or had rich parents who didn't earn it either.

Yes, fuck Ayn Rand..We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which will set the stage for the brightest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force. Soon it won't matter; we can get anally raped or whatever- just so we don't have to compete and will be rewarded for failure.

By daybereak I'll be fuckin Mao Zedong

Sun, 11/21/2010 - 06:18 | 744108 Incubus
Incubus's picture

I'm not advocating "big government" in its current form.  Think a bit larger, for a moment.  The entire system is rotten to the core because we're all a product of this disgusting culture we happened to be born into.  We need to fix ourselves as a whole before we can fix any government.

A society of "poor quality" is a result of a failed education system, first and foremost:  you educate people and they'll be capable of making better decisions in life.  Instead, we function as a factory: churn out people through pathetic systems of indoctrination for a paltry life, one of merely existing, worshipping material bullshit and embracing a lifestyle that is "profitable."

That psychopathic Randian greed philopsophy is what got us into this mess, you still don't see it?  You think reducing government is going to fix this?  No, the entire thing needs to be tossed out and something better needs to be put in its place; and above all else, people deserve to be educated--for the sake of a better, more honest society.

Ok not only are you clearly a racist (don't feel bad I get called that all the time- I'm white too), but clearly you are a homophobic if you find the culture we were born in disgusting. I'll bet you have a problem with men grinding on each other and gyrating their speedo clad hips in public. Hollywood and the left coast are filled with great role models and they do a great job spreading tolerance and eviscerating that old work ethic, personal responsibility crap, (same goes for New York City and Washington DC).

If you start to fuck with our education system, you will hurt some feelings...I don't think that is a good thing. Plus, these kids are only young once- why demand so much from them with all that preparing for life BS..when the government can just print money and take care of all of us?..I mean; if we don't have any kids then no one will have to pay for it.

Yes, I'm with you that psychopathic Randian greed is killing us with all that "want to make sure I can feed my kids without help from the government selfish greed". What message does that send to the others who are "keeping it real" by not studying or working- they are the cool ones. Labels are convenient for people who do not have the ability to articulate their frustrations.

Do you feel any rage toward the health insurance companies and the obscene profits?  Do you feel any rage toward the cost of getting medical services and the inability for free market system to work in that "industry"?  Do you feel any rage toward our irresponsible media? Etc etc...

I'd like to know how many people getting food stamps still somehow have cellphones with unlimited texting and data, cable or satellite TV on their wide-screen LCDs, and still have money for cigarettes and beer.

On a side note, why is it even POSSIBLE to use government food stamps to buy anything at all other than the barest of essential staples?

The easiest way I know of is to use small stand alone shops with manual inventory controls that cannot determine between "blunt tubes" and hot dogs run by an owner who treats the card as a debit card. The next is to purchase those essentials and sell them for cash to the neighbors. The last I have seen is to use the food stuffs to trade a working partner for cable/cell/mad money with cooked food. None of these are allowed in any program I know of but done regularly.

Yep, this is what happens when democracy is dominated by people who think the government's job is to inflate the price of assets. Somebody has to pay for it, and that can only be the people who don't own homes or stocks.

It's a commercial for your free Obama-Phone, of course!

Because emergencies happen, and who the fuck would pay for their own phone if the Gub'mint's gonna give you one? Guess that's the logic with food, too!

I was in Walmart a couple of weeks ago. Two women in front of me in the checkout were both drinking Starbucks coffee and had several bottles of liquor with their groceries, they paid for the groceries with a link card and pulled out a large wad of cash to pay for the liquor. Out in the parking lot  they loaded everything into a large late model SUV, they didn't appear to have a care in the world. Granted a lot of people really need help but there is a large percentage of people who are just using the system.

Perhaps it is time we start openly confronting these sorts of people when we see stuff like this.  Our "social programs" are no longer emergency safety nets for those in dire need...  These people are literally stealing from us at gunpoint to sustain their lifestyles and obtain luxuries they should rightfully be WORKING for.  They're just using the government as their proxy theives. We have every right to be outraged and confront these theives, just as if they were literally breaking into our homes and stealing our wallets.

That is not entirely accurate....they are stealing the entire planets wealth.....so for proper scale you would have to use something like the death star to convey how much is being stolen.

I thought the point of the graphic was to convey how many have been totally screwed by wall st, not to begin a divisive attack on the underclass....who's ranks are swelling because of the banking scum. With 20% unemployment I would expect the numbers to rise.Duh.

I agree...16M of the people using food stamps now were working hard 2 years ago; I'd wager 95+% of them are not 'system abusers', but people who don't want to see their kids starve to death to save bankers from themselves.

These post are getting funnier!

How does one say '95% of them aren't system abusers' without any quantitative proof whatsoever??

Got proof??

PS it seems some recipients are exchanging their benefits for cash. Wonder whet they are buying with the cash.....I bet it ain't food for starving kids!

From KOMO news:

"Kwong is accused of paying SNAP recipients cash - generally 50 cents on the dollar - for their monthly benefits. For example, Kwong would charge $500 on a SNAP card and pay the recipient $250 without giving them any food. Kwong would then be reimbursed the full $500 from the government, giving her a $250 profit. The scam benefited SNAP recipients because they received cash for benefits that should only be used to purchase food."

Full link: http://centraldistrict.komonews.com/content/trio-charged-food-stamp-scam

Perfect - Recipient pays 50c on the dollar to get cash for non-food items and Uncle Gov pays the store par for the EBT transaction.

I know this hurts the real poor, but to insult some when they know that the system is infected with fraud is total bullshit.

PS - How many people here actually give food to hungry people...seriously?

Not a bad idea except I worry we could end up like facist Germany with family members ratting each other out or reporting untrue misdeeds for spite or just plain meaness. There is no shortage of that in the US.

b) What powers of extrapolation are required to generalize from one instance to "a large percentage"?

I volunteer at the local food bank, were people go when the food stamps run out or they are to proud accept and use food stamps (I was very suprised at how large this group is in our community, large portion of this group are elderly and discretion is required).  I concur that their is much abuse in the social safety nets and share many of the frustrations expressed in posting here.

My concern is the number of children in the US that are hungary because of irresponsible parents.  This is happening more frequently, it is alarming to realize that in the US, a large number of children are going hungry.

Malnutrition in children has long term consequences.  If you cut the food stamp program to the "irresponsible parents" the children end up bearing most of the consequences, not the irresponsible adults.

I believe that our society has a moral obligation to provide food to children that are hungry.  It would be "morally wrong" to "cut" food stamps without finding a workable solution that addresses this (the children).  And there in lies a large part of the problem........

The vulnerable will always be the first to feel the pain in a selfish culture.  I never liked the term 'child poverty' because it's difficult to address child poverty without dealing with the parents poverty as well.  Sadly though many irresponsible parents do spend scarce funds on lottery tickets, cigarettes and booze instead of healthy food and clothing for the children first.  The elementary school here serves fruit in the classrooms in the morning.  Good move.  Targets the right people and provides nourishment for the learning day ahead.

The learning curve for economics and today's global financial system is comparable in steepness to Mt. Everest.

It doesn't help that economics is not really a science, that finance has become a game as complicated as three dimensional chess played blindfolded and the entire financial news media a vast system of propaganda for various PTB.

It's popular to ridicule the uninitiated  "sheeple" for their ignorance, but that itself strikes me as ignorance at least equal to that we attribute to them.

This shit ain't as simple as playing a game of monopoly.  Nor is it as attractive.

Cartoons are exactly what is needed to make the most fundamental points for the average guy and gal.  And I see nothing wrong with that.

The failure to make them as necessary is ours, not the "sheeple's."

The practice of compassion leads to the undeserving getting what they don't deserve and the deserving not getting what they do deserve. Like the practice of war. Both essential and inescapable human activities. Don't get all bent over it.

Because no one who receives compassion ever does anything productive with their life after they receive that support, right?

Perhaps the problem lies with your definition of 'deserving'.

life is not sloppy at all Buster, in a Socialist economy (feel free to argue that point) the individual who creates the needs performs the same service as the person who fills that need. They are equal partners.

A criminal robs a bank, the cop arrests him (50K a year plus benefits) the DA tries him (150K a year, then he runs for political office) The Judge sentences him (got yourcalculator?) then our man goes to prison, where it costs at least 35K a year, guards, cooks and janitors. Suppose our man never robbed that convenience store?

This is the broken window economy, institutionalized. Maybe you don't like it, maybe I don't like it, but get off the deadbeats baby. "society needs its outlaws.." Ken Kesey.

he had something else in mind, this is the economy we are given, but piss on Bernanke and leave the losers alone, they are doing their share.

in CA the state is actively signing up applicants, because more people on food stamps means more federal aid. for those who would, check out the requirements, the income standards are complicated, the basic issue is your assets, which you must move into a 401K account, doesn't matter how many million. (and you can borrow against that?) Interestingly enough the rate depends on the size of your household, family or extended family, or homeless guys who crash. people who are ill or unable to get to the office, can apply over the phone. Being on SSI is an automatic practically.

politically it makes more sense to push this program and drop unemployment benefits. Too many people fall through the cracks on that. There is also Section 8, a rent subsidy program. So with SNAP and section 8 you can cover what unemployment benefits would cover. Politically the unemployment numbers are huge, and government would rather tamp that number down, or abolish benefits altogether, to achieve that result, while more people use alternative welfare.

I have heard these stories about upper middle class shoppers buying bling, I have also heard that on the first of the month at Walmart, the cash registers go crazy at the stroke of midnight. (That's when they load the benefits into the system) and I know the second one is true.

How exactly do you "move your assets into your 401(k)" when there are low contrib limits for same (especially if you're not uber-wealthy to begin with as the limits are defined in terms of your income)?

Loving the tinfoil hat though, very chic.

I am in an area of Texas with a fair share of po white trash. I was in Webers Bread outlet (out of date or somethin products) cause i can get a huge loaf of Texas Toast for $1. This lady in front me has a bunch of twinkies and sugar drinks that she buys with food stamps. What made me sad/mad was that she was gross in size as were her 3 kids. This was not a bad woman, just didnt have a clue. Dumb and dumber. I see this at Wally World with cases of sugar drinks and chips and other junk in large quanity --- and you guessed it---- fat people. I dont want people to go hungry, but why create sick people to load up the medical system?
