Today's Economic Data Highlights

Tyler Durden's picture

Just one Fed survey today….

10:30: Dallas Fed manufacturing index for Sep…will it recover further?  Two months ago, this index plunged sharply into negative territory, one of the worst readings during this period of slowing in US industrial activity.  It recovered modestly in August, and analysts look for another move up toward the zero dividing line between growth and contraction.  The guts of this survey have not been quite as bad as the headline, though hardly good.  The index of production has been around zero through this period; the index of new orders has been around -8 to -9.

Median forecast (of 4): -7.0, ranging from -21 to -4; last -13.5.

Perhaps the markets rally because of the latest news reports that not only has the economy recovered, but the deficits have been reduced as well!

Now, it is pre-election season, and we should expect the two major parties to each be claiming the oxymoronic credential that the other would be more of a total disaster, despite all evidence to the contrary.

In that vein, we hear that Obama has not only ended combat in Iraq, stopped torture at Bagram and Guantanamo, protected our rights by assuming government authority to covertly assassinate and imprison US citizens, but has reduced this year's federal deficit and saved trillions of dollars in the future.

Well, actually this fiscal year's savings are projected as are the future savings.

This year's federal budget deficit was smaller by 8.1 percent through August compared to the same eight months of 2009. It is on pace to total $1.3 trillion this year compared to $1.4 trillion in 2009.
