I was recently audited by the kind and considerate IRS. After the audit was done and all papers were signed (so they couldn't try to screw me anymore) I asked the agent and her supervisor (who was there in the room at the time to "accept" the audit findings) what they thought of "Turbo Tax Timmy", my exact words.
They both blushed and said nothing. It seems that at least within my local IRS shake down office and measured by the standards of the IRS even the agents are embarrassed by Timmy.

I was audited by the IRS a couple of years ago and it was a pure sham. I had a small business and that only thing the agent went through was my day trading activities and home deductions. I had a second home and my accountant had accidentally put it on the wrong line and another (no way to confirm if it really was an accident). The agent clearly did not understand stock trading as all she was able to do was try to reconcile the numbers at the bottom of the page. I tried to explain to her that the basis may not be found in that year and what she was doing was not valid. I provided her with a complete spreadsheet breakdown of all fees and basis. I even found my previous employer's notes about exercising options and employee stock purchase (I had transferred some of these into my brokerage). Long story short, she made threats to move all proceeds to income and yelled at me during the audit. I told her if she did not understand she should refer to their experts (they have specialists in financial products). I went to her manager and the territory manager to resolve it. 9 months later I had a $2k refund which I doubt she had ever had to give. These people in the 1040 and small business self employed (SBSE) are Gestapo plain and simple. Never give into their tactics. They work for us!
If you want the IRS audit enforcement division to crawl all over you like African fire ants, just put "self-employed general contractor" in the Profession box and file a Schedule C.

Seems to me that the fairest tax is one that taxes the RECIPIENTS of government largess at higher rates than those who PAY for that largess, just like the private economy that charges the RECIPIENTS of goods and services according to how much they BUY and CONSUME. Those who RECEIVE government services should PAY for those services, and those who receive MORE services should pay MORE for them. That would be the most effective way to encourage people to become ever more productive. The first $XXXX per year that we earn ALL go to the governement, and the more you earn, the more you get to keep. A regressive tax is the one that encourages work and productivity. Now THAT would encourage business investments and jobs!

The tax code doesn't contain 500 million words in order to provide a fair system. It's written that way to provide loopholes to the people who pay the authors to write the words.
A "fair" taxation system will result in increased taxes for the wealthy, so we know it will never be made fair.
