Tokyo Exodus Beginning?
If the following letter posted by the BBC Blog is indicative of prevailing popular mood in the Japanese capital now that the government has lost credibility (as Zero Hedge predicted on Saturday), Tokyo may soon be a ghost town.
Mikan in Tokyo writes: "There is a growing sense that the Japanese
government is not telling us the true story. On one end, there is the
Japanese media that plays down the nuclear drama and focuses on human
drama, and at the other, the foreign media is up-playing the nuclear
disaster. In my company I heard at least half the essential staff is
being sent to Hong Kong, Singapore or even Sydney. I am preparing to
leave Tokyo and/or Japan. So are many of my friends. There is a sense of
deserting Tokyo as soon as possible."

OTHER than those who suffered acute radiation sickness. I'm speaking mostly to an American audience here, who won't be exposed to high doses of radiation, but could get a shot of radioactive iodine, the only fraction of the fallout likely to cross the ocean to Hawaii or California.
Christ.
I remember Chernobyl...the radiation levels in Oregone on the fucking COAST were in the picocuries range. Basically don't drink the rainwater but even if you did, the level of exposure at that distance is minimal.
WTF is wrong with you suggesting KI to people?
I'm not sure if you have a map, but Japan is a lot closer the the US than Chernobyl. Further, there are ZERO mountain ranges in between, rather than the world's largest in the case of the Chernobyl. In addition, the jet stream goes straight from the area where the meltdown is occurring to the Oregon coast. The Japanese tried to use it to bomb the US directly during WWII with balloons, you might recall. Further than that, the statistics today tell us that radioactive iodine travelled hundreds of miles outside the "emergency zone", and caused large numbers of thyroid cancers in those areas. Hawaii is not far outside of that range, which may have been limited by geographical features.
There is no reason not to have KI. It is cheap as shit, tastes TERRIBLE so is unlikely to poison anyone, and the effective dose is quite small, and poses no health risks.
++++
The downside to owning KI (and using it properly) is nil. The downside to not having it and needing it is pretty high. No harm having it in your first aid kit. I wonder what the Japanese without KI are thinking right now?
Trav. I understand some of your frustration here in the last couple of days, but millions of Americans live in close enough proximity to a nuke plant that they should have this shit around anyway. Even though we more than likely (notice I'm not dooming out on you here???) won't need it now, if it wakes some people up, more power to him.
Also, in your haste to point out that nobody knows shit yet, have you noticed that you have already made up your mind on the side of complacency? Cause I'm still firmly in the camp of "we don't know shit." Just sayin.
I'm in the camp of "every time the data changes the government has to adjust its story to a more pessimistic one". I can see which way the gradient is pointing, and I know which mistake is more costly.
Thanks T, I'm getting it for my parents in Arizona.
No! People in Japan and nearby countries should have potassium iodide on hand, but thinking you need it here in North America is just stupid panic. For most people it's just a waste of money, and for some there may be bad reactions to this medication. Still others will take too much and blame their subsequent illness on radiation...
I have recommended KI to people who are travelling in the region, but I have not purchased any for myself.
Would you have recommended it to people in Harrisburg during 3 mile island?
Tmosley always enjoy and generally agree with your comments. being a scientist whats you sense of this being a real problem for southern California. Could you put a probability to it?
that took longer that i thought it would
Lets see, major earthquake and radiation leakage. The real reason they're leaving is to get away from Godzilla!
Im all fucking confused. We need Raymond Burr to translate.
Didn't Godzilla lay some eggs under Madison Square Garden in 2000?
Should be hatching during the Supermoon event this Saturday.
Those eggs contain a bevy of black swans
Where would 100+ million people go if shit got really bad?
I scrolled this far down thread before someone finally asked that question. Congrats Temporis!

You people need to...GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE! By the time they lose this plant to meltdown it will be too late and have already spread to the other facilities. I would not believe a word from the government or TEPCO. They have too many corporate interests and liabilities to tell you the truth. If a total meltdown occurs and it spreads, expect the same kind of panic on the West Coast of America. This could be the worst disaster in history unvailing before our eyes and people are still watching Opra and Dr. Phil. I have my camper stocked and ready to be the first on HWY 80 headed East and then South to Texas if it does.. Go ahead and laugh but if SHTF I won't be left wondering how to protect my family. The more I read about the potential threat to the US the more I realize this could be real if all of these facilities decide to go! Call me stupid or call me prepared, all I got to say is I have a plan and if this cools down and they succeed in containment then it will be a false flag and we will have food and supplies for the summer camping season.

I'm not planning on taking any pills, just a vacation. I believe webbots more then anything coming from someones mouth when it comes to disasters. There have been hundreds of people and nuclear experts warning of the risk to the jet stream but this webbot prediction for the 25th put me on red alert.

Be careful that the information you're getting is reliable. I watched the you tube video you posted a link to and it included a Nuclear Fallout Map that, according to Snopes.com, is FALSE. Spreading around this nonsense just encourages people to panic.

Take 99 south to 58 in Bakersfield to 15 to Las Vegas. Thats a day's trip. South is better than straight east. Then its an easy ride to Texas. Skip the Rockies and no services out in the Nevada/Utah deserts.
No tinfoil, I swear, but the best place to be in the United States is Colorado, deep in the Rockies.
There's a reason the U.S. COG plans center around locations there.

Dude, please consult a map and pay attention to the scale. It looks like a couple inches, but it's thousands of miles. Over that distance the stuff will dissipate to near irrelevance, and every spot on the Earth will be just as exposed as the west coast of the USA. Do you expect panic on the shores of Europe as well? Calm down...think rationally.

Government PR people are not nuclear scientists. They may be listening to every opinion, but they are ultimately acting on the opinion that paints the situation is the least risky light. The government is better off laying out all plausible scenarios. Those that do not end up causing (huge flight) the situation they are trying to avoid with their obfuscation.
Overally, I really feel awful for the Japanese people, sick to my stomach. I hope the world honors the honorable people of that nation by learning from this example.
Lesson #1: Stop publicly subsidized, centrally & bureaucratically controlled & dictated power! The consumer needs to be unleashed on individualized, location specific solutions for power. These public farms only serve to drain our money for special interest, never produce good results & make us dependent on the system.
Lesson #2: Get the government out of subsidizing coastal development. People should be forced to build & maintain property in high risk areas at their own peril.
Lesson #3: Start taking the security of clean water & ability to make food seriously on the local level.
I've a few friends/ex-colleagues living & working in Tokyo - Japanese & foreigners - all professional 30-somethings, some with young families. They're *all* contemplating shooting through, though nobody really wants to be the first one out the door. They're quietly freaking out over Fukushima, pissed off with the idea of rolling blackouts, worried 'bout the next aftershock, upset by what's happening up north but otherwise untouched by it all. That said, they seem to be taking a wait n' see approach at this stage - Early plans revolve around identifying company offices in other cities (HK, Taipei, Sydney & further afield to Paris, London, NY) as well as scoping out local accomodation options through friends/family/etc.
My guess, which'll likely be the wrong call per usual....if they wake up on Tuesday to the headline 'Fukushima meltdown' (whatever the hell that means) along with warnings of even mild radiation blowing south, there'll be a run for anything that's headed outta town, with expats leading the charge.
Supposed to rain, sleet and even a little snow tonight over Fukushima. If any of those reactors are open to the atmosphere its going to be a Hard Rain falling!
Black Rain.
China has more risk than Japan cos EarthQuakes and Nuclear disasters
I suppose you're right. Japan is way past risk.
..prevailing popular mood in the Japanese capital now that the government has lost credibility (as Zero Hedge predicted on Saturday)
my thoughts exactly ...this might be the society-changing event that finally tips the Japanese people from compliance with leaders and authority structures (an historical cultural trait) into Western individualism.
Siting nuclear power plants in tsunami hit-zones is one huge bloody mistake to add to 20 years of political failure with the economy (propping up crap institutions) ...this could (will) be an historical turning point
lots of armchair expertseverywhere.
MOX is only used in #3. #2 is in the worst shape at the moment.
This design has no "catcher" stage. The building is 40 years old and that concept had not been integrated yet.
Rod DO heat indefinately. In fact the spent fuel continues to heat even when stored. They manage to limit that by storage methods, but spent fuel pools are cooled as well. If this cooling is not maintained over the next few weeks the spent fuel pools could easily become the next issue.
The heating is inherant in the fuel. By proper cooling you can reduce it to effectively nothing, but that has to be maintained. If the core melts, all of the constraints to sustained heating are removed becuase the fuel lands in the bottom in a large mass only partially interrupted by the control rods (which protrude from the bottom of the vessel for this reason). Without the control rods and proper placement, the single mass of fuel should resume criticality and simply heat until it melts through containment. This is when it usually encounters some other environmental variable and exlodes. This is probably the only disperal that will occur in this design. These are not NEW reactors. Most of what you described is correct about a modern design.
That was my thinking as well, that they have or will lose control entirely. There is a reason the Japanese authorities are being vague.
In truth, a worst disaster awaits; panic in Tokyo. They'll obfuscate the truth forever to avoid that, even as the radioactive cloud of particulates fall in the streets there.
Thanks for this comment. Those of us who are not nuclear experts, and don't even try to play one on the internet, have been getting quite an education. I do not doubt anything you say; I don't pretend to have the expertise, but I'm waiting for the likes of trav777, Aristarchan and the others who appear to have experience in the energy industry to comment. You have addressed one of my key concerns, which is how these plants---designed and built many decades ago---differ from plants built in subsequent years. I equate it to the varying safeguards built into a Boeing 777 vs. an old BeA Comet or a Boeing 707.
yes, it's very sad. the japanese knew better than to play with nuclear fire.

Very witty.
You must be only about the millionth idiot to find a joke there.
There is a common element here, though. If Japan had oil resources, neither would have happened.

Judging by some of the comments on here I think it would be a good idea for all the people who are advising against going to areas of the US and stocking up on iodine, for them to get a gun some pork and beans and go sit in a shelter somewhere for the next 6 months so the rest of the more intelligent people on ZH can get on with constructive comments , and so ZH can look more like ZH and not a Yahoo chat site . Really what did these people parents do when they tested a 1 megaton in the Nevada dessert, I guess you just cannot fix stupid ?
This is ZH? I thought it was NationalEnquirer.com
Most of those parents are dead from cancer already. Now get back to American Idol on demand. Better yet go take a dip in the Gulf Of Mexico and eat some fresh sea food while your at it. And when the whole global economy falls apart and people turn on each other like starving dogs, I'll enjoy watching people like you, caught like a deer in the headlights trying to save your unprepared ass as others pick you to pieces.

+1. It would be nice to have the ZH postings cleared of the inane comments for a few months...maybe if we tell them it's not safe to come out yet we can drag this out for years? :-)
Controlled, underground nuclear tests (where most fuel is consumed in the blast, and there is relatively little fuel to start with) are different from uncontrolled release of nuclear materials from a reactor meltdown (a lot of fuel, none of which is consumed).
I guess those people in Russia and nearby republics are a bunch of lunatic tin-foil-hatters for getting cancer from airborn iodine isotopes.
But hey, you are certainly free to be complacent, rather than spending $20 bucks on some simple, long lasting chemical that could save your life one day, in the event that a reactor much closer to home melts down after an earthquake or terrorist attack.

There must not be Chipotle in Japan.
I think that the New York Times and other US news media have a strong anti-nuclear bias and they also have an unfortunate tendency to sensationalize. As I have said before, there is a big difference between a meltdown and a containment breach. We had a meltdown at Three Mile Island and this only lead to a minor release of radiation.
So, in order to sell newspapers and advance their anti-nuclear agenda, the New York Times is doing something like yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater. Evacuation of Tokyo seems like a massive overreaction to me.
And in case anyone is wondering, I am not and have never been employed by the nuclear industry. And I don't have any nuclear-related investments.
Tell that to the US 7th fleet LOL!
I believe ZH is not for rational thinking people any more , it is for people who want to run around like headless chickens , so please no more sensible rational comments.
Housing crisis in US resolved as entire Japanese population relocates!

We have a winner!
Me Hercle! Heroshima, Nagisaki, and now this. These people need to stay away from nukes.
As to the current skidaddlers, I wonder how much they'd pay for Mexifornia?
Bad idea for the Japanese to bug out and holiday on Hawaii. The huge cloud of radiation will soon be over the islands dropping it's leathal fallout.
There is no cloud at present.
But at some point, sure it might. We're not there yet.
I told ya Robo. Move over boyson.........You have new radioactive neighbors coming soon.
You know, the only f'n thing that matters right now, per the fake market, are those reactors. And clearly, by their own words on the ground there, no one there has a clue what to do.
And so what does the last criminal syndicate Wall Street banker on the Ministry of Truth [CNBC] say? "Long equities because the Fed will not raise rates anytime soon." There. Of course.
Investment banking not only strikes bankers tone deaf at a tragically young age, but also apparently negatively affects their myopic vision, as well. You cannot make this shit up...but I can...and I again implore Big Brother to give me a shot at writing copy for the new American Marxist movement. I can do the job!
"Nuclear Plant Technicians take heart knowing equity portfolios are outperforming Nuclear Plant Technicians; accommodative Fed thanked."
Have any U.S. based reporters asked a grieving Japanese citizen what he or she thinks of Obama's reaction yet? I'm looking forward to that video.
Japan has asked the US for help to stop a quake-damaged nuclear reactor plunging into uncontrollable meltdown.

Japan Asks US To Help Stop Reactor Meltdown
Japan has asked the US for help to stop a quake-damaged nuclear reactor plunging into uncontrollable meltdown. The plea comes after a second hydrogen explosion occurred at a nuclear plant where officials warned that three nuclear rods in a cooling-starved reactor appeared to be melting.
Plumes of grey smoke billowed into the air after the blast at the Fukushima Daiichi plant's number 3 unit, injuring 11 people.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano confirmed the fear of rods melting inside all three of the site's most troubled reactors.
"Although we cannot directly check it, it's highly likely happening," he said.
Officials insist the inner reactor's container remains intact - but concern was raised when number 2 unit's fuel rods were left fully exposed by a falling cooling water level.
Workers managed to raise water levels after a second drop on Monday night, but they began falling for a third time, according to nuclear agency official Naoki Kumagai.
Specialists are now considering spraying water directly on the hermetically-sealed container in an attempt to cool it.
Nuclear Expert Olli Heinonen Says situation 'very grim'The former deputy director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told Sky News that the status of the faulty reactor may deteriorate even more.
"I think the situation is still very, very grim - we are by far not over the worst," Olli Heinonen said.
Jesus. I read that and my heart skipped a beat. There's MORE?!!?
Housing bubble? In Toyko? come on. Just because a glow-in-the-dark studio flat with built in roller-coaster costs 470K. That's no reason to panic.
Get the heck out stat - you can always go back if you wish
no man is an island!
no woman is cooked roast.
This is a very subversive article. It destroys the myth of japanese loyalty to its people. Like saying that the Samourai didn't believe in honor. It is depressing to be told that the Japanese government, like all governments of the world, breathe through their ass holes and fart through their mouths. It's a Grimm's fairy tale so grim about the true nature of man, it would wipe the smile off the face of a Cheshire cat. Make a wet hen out of a budding Billy the Kid, a man left with sweaty palms and a trembling trigger finger. Myth destruction is the worst of human evils as it betrays the essence of dogmatic man. What's left is the 'dog' not the 'matic' as in automatic : a Winchester '73 without its repeat action. The white man would have lost the west to Geronimo for less than that. Like the poor son of Samourai to the devil's ghost let out from the atomic Pandora's box. Brave new world.
worker bees can leave even drones can fly away the queen is their slave
All nuclear plants in Japan are US designed nuclear plants... I believe the Japanese people have found a scapegoat in the US and in their inept government.
Yes it's a pity for them they lost WW2 and then relied on USA for nuclear...
GE. Bringin good things to life.
Please advise on the following. What is the best type of iodine pill/medicine to take for this type event (related to radioactive fallout potential in California)? Where can this pill/medicine be obtained? Thanks in advance.
I figure at this point, it's better to be prepared than wait for the governments and large public companies to tell the truth.
the best iodine pill is sex... like in the Decameron...as they awaited the plague in medieval Italy...

Best source of iodine for potential fallout in California is a bag of Lay's potato chips. Seriously...you'll get all the iodine you need from common iodized salt. You do not need to be taking any extra because you are nowhere near Japan. The potential dangers of unnecessarily taking potassium iodide far outweigh the level of danger you face from a radiation release in Japan...even a massive one.
Thanks to all for the references. No doubt there's a run on KI pills so I will do my best to secure some over the coming days. However, the Lay's potato chip idea sounds good as not might these provide a source of iodine, I have to figure these things have a shelf life of about five years. So I might as well kill two birds with one stone and stock up with Lays. Of course eating a diet of just Lays potato chips carries its own set of health problems but I guess this is a risk I will just have to take.
See Tmosley's post on the first page. I just purchased some online " the vitamin shoppe " 3-4 day back order.
Oh, a letter posted on a BBC blog. Well, that's gotta be true, right?
Man, what a bunch of over-reacting chicken littles! Get a fucking grip!
Is the situation serious? Yep. Are we looking at Chernobyl 2? No fucking way.

Do you know how to fuck, Count...and better still...do you know how to count?
Reminds me of Manhattan after 9/11. I had a friend who closed on a condo about 2 months before 9/11. He had a great sell-side banking job, but after 9/11 he just packed up and moved back to his home state of Maryland. He told us his plans and we told him he was nuts because there were no bids for Manhattan residential real estate. He did not care, and told his real estate agent to get rid of his condo at any price. I never heard from him again after he resigned, but if he sold during that 2-3 month period immediately after 9/11, I'm certain he took a magnificent loss, probably in the vicinity of a quarter million. If people in Tokyo are reacting the same way, and the nuclear thing doesn't turn into an apocolypse, there will be fortunes made in real estate there as people panic.
Reminds me of "Gone with the Wind" and the carpet-bagger creed of ass holes. After Sherman ramrodded the South.

There's a guy posting here, saying human beings can take enormous amounts of radiation and live. This is factually incorrect. We (humanity) cannot afford to lose the northern pacific.
I agree the NYSE going up and down 1% only, in the face of this disaster, is indicative of a rigged market.
I'm hoping for a miracle. :-S

We can stop talking about 'Japan' to some extent and start talking about the Kanto Plain. If this area is significantly contaminated, Japan will be in a serious state the likes of which has not yet been contemplated. There are not many arable, population-dense plains in the islands, and Kanto is by far the largest and most significant. With all of Japan being about equal to Montana or Germany in land area, we are talking about a large proportion of the country's population-sustaining capability.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kant%C5%8D_Plain
It seems that in the summer prevailing winds are onshore as the ocean stays cool while the land heats up.
http://space.hsv.usra.edu/CLRC/papers/Tsunematsu.pdf
"In the Kanto Plain, a steady sea breeze originating from the Pacific coast frequently prevails under the cloudless weak synoptic wind condition. This sea breeze is called the extended sea breeze because its horizontal scale exceeds 100 km (Kondo, 1990). The extended sea breeze can transport atmospheric pollutants to the inland area (Kurita et al., 1990). The sea breeze is, therefore, familiar to people living in the Kanto Plain including the Tokyo metropolitan area."
If there is a core breach or multiple breaches, no resource can be spared in entombing the units ASAP. The international community, led by the UN and IAEA, should be actively planning this action for all of these units at this time.
This is not a joke and not alarmist. Ukraine could 'spare' some countryside. Japan cannot.
Maybe Goldman Sachs can donate a trillion or so to move the SAND.
FFS.
thanks for posting
how could they 'entomb' the things if there were core breaches, esp. if multiple ones?
Like this, but hopefully a little better:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_Nuclear_Power_Plant_sarcophagus
That's kinda what I was afraid of.
Hopefully, the technology has improved and at least the old Soviet govt. won't be in charge if it ever becomes necessary.
And let us not forget about the possibility of giant radioactive crabs emerging from the sea.
The heat output from the fuel rods has already decreased considerably since the reactor was shut down. Even though it is probably still sufficient to melt the core, it is very doubtful that they are still producing enough heat to melt through the massive concrete containment vessel which surrounds the reactor. The steel vessels holding the reactors still seem to be intact, so at this point the fuel is not even near the containment vessel. And the heat output is decreasing by the day.
This is not at all like Chernobyl where a massive explosion blasted through a reactor which had no real containment structure and left radioactive fuel scattered on the ground for hundreds of feet around the reactor.
Hot enough to melt rods is hot enough to melt the steel. Depending on....things...of course.
You and I are discussing probabilities. But you do not think it's worth thinking through some of the branches on the decision tree.
That is simply foolish.
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Asia/Story/STIStory_645007.html
One product that can perform "double duty" is called Polar Pure, is designed for water disinfection while hiking or camping or treating suspect water supplies. It is basically the commercially available resublimed iodine crystals, in a glass bottle, outlined by Kahn-Visscher in 1975 that create a supersatuated aqueous solution used for treating raw water.
Another product would be Potable Aqua, iodine tablets. These degrade over time, particularly after exposure to air.
Another method of introducing iodine into the body would be to "paint" the skin with Betadine or Povidone, say at least 4"x4", daily, a different area each time.
All this presupposes that saturating ones thyroid with iodine is indicated, and that no allergic type reaction in the individual is known. Studies seem to indicate that individuals with healthy thyroid function, including pregnant women, can consume water disinfected with iodine 8mg/l for months with no ill effects.
The dosage, for protecting the thyroid, is probably quite different than simply disinfection of raw water. Hope this helps.
The Soviet Government said everything was under control.

Go down to any Health Food Store or Oriental Food aisle in your supermarket and buy dried kelp. Buy some sushi wrapped in seaweed and, it is probably better for your kidneys in the long run.
Speaking of miracle kelp... you can also put kelp on the female's cervix to dilate it for childbirth.
Note: Please don't put kelp on your hemorrhoids as this would obviously be counter productive.
Enjoy!
Shepard Smith just reported on Fox that alarms are going off in Tokyo and that there has been an explosion in #2. They were translating a broadcast by NHK (TV news network in Japan) where experts were hypothesizing that, unlike the explosions in #1 and #3, the containment vessel in #2 had ruptured. The alarms may be related to aftershocks rather than radiation.
Japan is an economic basket case and so is the USA. People are leaving the US for greener pastures and I wouldn't be surprised if Europeans and Japanese did the same. Australia, Canada, Chile, Brazil... Mars?
Even NYT shill Paul Krugman admitted last year: "I think even Horatio Alger would be leaving the USA for opportunities elsewhere."
Tokio - London with Cathay: One way, next two days, USD 5000.
Latest from NHK live: "Blast heard at No.2 reactor at 6:14am [about 4 hours ago]. Temporary rise in radiation level has fallen off again, so no concern that this will impact human health."
However, containment vessel "may have been damaged" in the blast and "appears to have lost pressure". This would be problematic going forward.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says radiation levels reached 8,217 microsieverts per hour near the front gate of the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power station at 8:31 AM Tuesday.
Anyone in this kind of environment would be exposed to more than 3 years' worth of naturally occurring radiation within a single hour.

The internet drama-queenery surrounding these nuclear reactors bothers me more, and frankly some expats I've met would panic if their slippers were not warmed for them in the morning. I'm in Tokyo and I won't be moving unless there's a very, very good reason to.
hey man, if exploding nuclear reactors isn't a good enough reason, what is?
That is your choice. We each have to assess our own situation in relation to the potential risks, the potential costs, and who else is also dependent on our choices. It's called "insurance".
That's a good point, but from here I just can't help seeing it as an overreaction. Maybe I'm just becoming a curmudgeon.
I can't imagine what the people of Japan are going through.
My thoughts and condolences are with all of them.
There getting out because even they know that 1 2 and 3 reactors blowing up can't be good.
I'll say it again......
GET THE FUCK OUT!!!!!
The SUKI (tm) RELIGION, The New World Religion (tm), major international Japanese religion, urges everyone to remain calm.
what a small mind to believe in imaginary lines on a map that make people "illegal."
