Toxicologists: Corexit “Ruptures Red Blood Cells, Causes Internal Bleeding”, "Allows Crude Oil To Penetrate “Into The Cells” and “Every Organ System"

George Washington's picture

Washington’s

Blog

As I have previously noted,
Corexit is toxic, is less effective than other dispersants, and is
actually worsening the damage
caused by the oil spill.

Now, two toxicologists are saying that
Corexit is much more harmful to
human health and marine life than we've been told.

Specifically
Gulf toxicologist Dr. Susan Shaw - Founder and Director of the Marine
Environmental Research Institute - dove
into the oil spill
to examine the chemicals present.

Dr.
Shaw told CNN:

If I can tell you what
happens — because I was in the oil
— to people…

Shrimpers throwing their nets into water… [then]
water from the nets splashed on his skin. …

[He experienced a]
headache that lasted 3 weeks… heart palpitations… muscle spasms… bleeding
from the rectum…

And that’s what that Corexit does, it ruptures
red blood cells, causes internal bleeding
, and liver
and kidney damage
. …

This stuff is so toxic
combined
… not the oil or dispersants alone. …

Very,
very toxic and goes right through skin.

***

The
reason this is so toxic is because of these solvents [from dispersant] that penetrate
the skin
of anything that’s going through the dispersed oil takes
the oil into the cells
takes the oil into the
organs
… and this stuff is toxic to every organ system in the
body. …

Similarly,
marine biologist and toxicologist Dr. Chris Pincetich - who has an
extensive background in testing the affects of chemicals on fish - says
that Corexit disrupts cell membranes.

He also explains that EPA
toxicity testing for Corexit is woefully inadequate, since EPA testing
for mortality usually only requires a 96-hour
time frame. His doctoral research found that fish that were alive at 96
hours after exposure to pesticide were dead at two weeks, so the
chemicals were considered non-lethal
for the purposes of the test.

Drs.
Shaw and Pincetich are wildlife conservationists. But even industry
scientists working for Exxon
and the manufacturer
of Corexit itself admit that the stuff is toxic.

I think that several hundred thousand concerned citizens, encircling the White House, making themselves 'heard' by banging rocks against the iron White House fence, would cause a bit of a stir.

Truthfully, I don't have a clue where to start. Peaceful protests don't work. I saw pictures of people holding hands on the beach, but did it accomplish anything? I think to get any real attention, you need a hundred or more people with shotguns and M4 carbines. However, you're then labeled as a whacked out militia.

I don't know where to start, and I think a lot of people feel the same way.

Start at home. Does your spouse understand?  Does your family?  Volunteer at church or a non-profit.  If you are willing to do for others, you will gain a lot of clout.  We are going to need each other to get through this mess.

Excellent. This is where it has to start if we want to get anything changed.

Slap him once for me too.

Okay, I don't know the issues, but I like the idea!

Issues?  He's a pathological lying politician (just like all of 'em).  Went to school with his dumb unethical ass.  I try to avoid fights, but when they find you, duck and jab -- duck and jab -- then a southpaw roundhouse!  Don't be afraid to taste your own blood.  Yeah, it's not how you were reared, but it's better than dying a thousand deaths.  Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.

@ Augustus and/or Jim_Rockford

Great idea for an oil spill victims fundraiser.  Would either of you consider treading water off of Port Fourchon?  $10k per hour of water treaded?  Jim gets $12k per hour if he wears on Alyeska speedo made by Velobabe.  I don't think either of you should do it, but you both seem to have little fear or worry about the Macondo disaster.  What ya'll say?

Sure, I'll do it for $10K / hr rate paid to me.

I might buy that old girl a tube of lidocane out of it.

And you accuse me of form over substance.  Nice.

Sure, I'll do it.  What is the concentration of this toxic red-blood-cell bursting stuff in the waters off of Port Fourchon?  I only ask because I didn't see it mentioned in the article above.

Back to your defense of Greg Palast... in his most recent article on his web site, is he asserting that The Alaska Pipeline was shut down in 2006 due to corrosion?

I gotta say...that's funny right there...but, now I'll have to apply for BP compensation to rid myself of all the mental images ;-)

An outrage!!!  I cannot believe it.  How can this be legal?   a strict cost/benefit analysis?  Cost and benefit to whom?  Obviously BP.  I am in Houston.  My God, this country has gone straight to Hell. Who manufactures  Corexit?

British Petroleum has been on a cost cutting addiction for well over 15 years;

How else can you account for killing 15 human lives and injured 180 human lives in the Texas City incident.  The majority of those who were killed in that incident were placed in a mustering area for contractor staff performing the turn around at the time, UNDER AN ACTIVE Flare stack that began to rain down overhead burning liquid hydrocarbons.

as a point of reference here was the take away from the Dispersant Use Meeting:

May 27

http://www.crrc.unh.edu/dwg/dwh_dispersants_use_meeting_report.pdf

and some testimony by the Chair of that meeting on May 17

http://transportation.house.gov/Media/file/Full%20Committee/20100519/Kin...

and an NYT blog post by that same person on May 5

http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/05/rules-revolving-doors-...

and finally the NALCO (Corexit) folks quote that same person and many other experts and assorted officials e.g. Thad Allen on their website.

http://www.nalco.com/news-and-events/4259.htm

Bottom line,  let's go ahead and use it even though we don't know much about it

PS GW, please keep up what you are doing, the amount of mis/disinformation out there is staggering, big oil and big government are no doubt managing the message on their own websites and in the blogs. My advice is that people should as much as possible seek out primary sources for info and evaluate what is being said by an author (including GW).  And beware of the so called experts who will weigh in on blogs such as this claiming to know it all.

Big deal, they won't need to use this stuff after this weekend b/c they are going to capture all of the leak.  See, Obama was right when he said they would get the leak down to a trickle in a couple of days.

Thx GW!

You know, I never feel comfortable on these sort of things. Victims? Don't be melodramatic. Look down there. Tell me. Would you really feel any pity if one of those dots stopped moving forever? If I offered you twenty thousand pounds for every dot that stopped, would you really, old man, tell me to keep my money, or would you calculate how many dots you could afford to spare? Free of income tax, old man. Free of income tax - the only way you can save money nowadays.
