Twitter Caves To Adjusted First Amendment, Blocks "Operation Paybacks" Anon_Operations; Next Up: Twitter Taken Down By Hactivists?

Tyler Durden's picture

Less than an hour ago we asked (rhetorically, we hoped) how long until Twitter caves to the same gestapo tactics that have caused Wikileaks to be banned virtually everywhere else. The answer turns, is, less than an hour.

But do not despair: @Anon_Operations is already reborn as @AnonOpsNet

And, furthermore, we don't want to be shareholders of twitter right about now.

I don't see an end to this battle.  I do see the word "terrorist" being thrown around very soon though.  I wish them luck, after all, someone has to stick up for all the voiceless masses.

PROTECTION DISCUSSION fyi some practical things to know:

i have a COMCAST 20meg connection, as an Internet client who has been repeated attacted, continued DAILY in various configurations of attacker ways/means, and various defensive configurations/operating systems, hardward, and anti-intrusion/anti-virus software...AND HAVE LEARNED A LOT, that i would like to share with ZH readers....

1) yes, i have REALLY been attacked in a manner usually reserved for large companies, government agencies, etc...not for money, not for me being 'important', but probably just because i am 'fun to mess with'...i keep coming back, no matter what...harddrives 'wiped clean' (not merely erased)
and new O/S reloaded (without bothering to 'microsoft-activate' anymore, not when that 'clean load' will be knocked down in 1 hour or less...that includes ESPECIALLY MICROSOFT o/s 7...'THEY get lots of fun showing me how quickly THAT can be taken out...'

2) yes, i have 'implemented' every known 'retail version' of antivirus, including M/S VERY OWN...etc..nothing, NOTHING, ever detected!! nor stopped..

3) yes, i have/had implemented the M/S full-deal Professional Security Regime...REALLY...all the 'services' turned off, via msconfigure utility, for instance...and all the various 'local-security' options, and hiding the root/administrator, using only 'guest' or 'user' permissions

4) yes, i have/had/still do use a hardware firewall at the cable head (i REPLACED the COMCAST UNIT, at my own expense)
and limited the incoming ports to "80" and "443" only...out going ports, you must leave SOME of them open...in the "1024-1048" region for YOUR initiated communications...and of course SHUT DOWN the NETBIOS ms bullshit at the ethernet port, and as a service...theres more..

5) yes, i purchased and studied MANY security books relating to both MS and UNIX/LINUx..and implemented MANy MORE 'security-loophole' closures...

6) yes, i FINALLY did 'sort of' 'overcome' the/these intruders, which is what i would like to convey HERE..

6a) i find that using the UBUNTU in the CD/DVD only memory resident TOTALLY operating system with SOME ADDITIONAL measures taken...ALLOWS ME TO CONNECT , with continuous external interference (bringing some download speeds to less than 50kilobits/sec on a line that will work at 2-20 megabits when nobody is DDServicing me.....HOWEVER I CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO USE THE INTERNET, WITHOUT THE BASTARD TEACHERS - TEACHING ME SOME LESSONS OF COURSE...the FINAL temporary solution...

6b) when UBUNTU is memory loaded/resident, usually there is NO security...its a 'demo' after all...however, you MUST CREATE a SECURE USER, protect the UBUNTU user (with near-root privileges), and protect the 'hidden' root users TOO

HOW TO DO: use 'passwd' to create the default 'Ubuntu' user password...it must be STRONG = 14 characters or more, with the entire ensemble of IBM character-set (256 possibles, printable/not printable)...the only 'practical' non-printable is THE SPACE BAR...so use numbers, symbols upper/lower case..use letters upper/lowercase..use about 25% of each 'set' = say 4 space bars randomly, 2 lowercase letters, 2 uppercase letters, 4 numbers, 4 symbols from set of upper/lower case...DO NOT USE ANY MECHANICAL SEQUENCE such as all the symbols from left to right, or any other easy to remember QUERTY physical pattern..it must be HARD, and forget your "easy to remember" THATs from pre-year 2000 advise...

HOW TO DO: use 'sudo passwd root' from the Ubuntu terminal command line... and create the 'root' password...make it one character DIFFERENT from the Ubuntus passwd, so that the "hash" of that 'root password' is different...

HOW TO DO: Create a USER could be named 'USR' under system/ administration/users and groups...give this USER 'no privileges' and provide a different (shorter password, maybe just trunkate the 'root' by a few characters)..

HOW TO DO: then create a SOFTWARE FIREWARE within the Ubuntu
...from the command line, as user = Ubuntu "sudo ufw enable' (the ufw firewall enable)..."sudo ufw logging full" (ENABLES the ufw firewall log with FULL LOGGING TRACE), "sudo ufw default deny incoming" (the basic default will be to block all tcp/ip 'uninvited' incoming packets on ports 1-65435 ...more commands are available here FYI)

HOW TO DO: finally, NOW, YOU CAN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, BUT NOT QUITE FINISHED..set your hardware firewall to packet size '256' bytes (seems radical, but slows unhindered thruput to about 50%, not bad)...AND set your 'edit connections ethernet/radio to '256' bytes, and no DHCP, burt rather MANUAL TCP/IP like 192.168.0.11 on YOUR COMPUTER, and leave default hardware firewall at like, 192.168.0.1..and manually set you DNS at both firewall/computer..

NOW WITH ALL THIS DONE, you will not STOP the intruders if they are interested (want to play, 'teach you some more lessons') BUT THEY mostly mostly will NOT be able to disrupt your 'on-line-communications' to a 100%, just to 80% slowing of thru put, mostly DENIAL OF SERVICE PACKET FLOODING ATHT THE FIREWALL/COMCAST INTERFACE....which they will stop, once they see you've got the rest handled properly..

HOWEVER, sometimes, depending on THEIR interest, challenge level, a REAL INDUSTRIAL/NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY capable hacker/intruder will STILL get in...you find 'locked processes, finally forcing you to reboot AND OF COURSE RELOAD THE ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM BACK INTO MEMORY...just about 3-5 minute however, so not bad..

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TRACE THE ACTUAL sucessful ATTACKING PACKET, THE REAL ONE...it will be ONCE and not more than 100 bytes long..SO FORGET YOUR "snort" software..it needs to be be, apparently, literally inside the hardware firewall, ath the first stages of decoding from COMCAST..

NO, COMCAST hasn't the slightest idea, what i am talking about, nor can i demonstrate it, nor have, apparently anyt others in my TCP/IP area complained...

YES, THEY CAN FIND you, by scanning the TCP/IP addresses in your area, they are all, by geographic area, and then finding your typical 'assigned IP'...and then finding your specific computer ID, used EVERYDAY BY ALL INTERNET CONNECTSS...http is not 'connectionless' but reiterates your address/computer ID for every screenfull...

YES, they can find you, even easier, with insertintg a 'cookie' on port '80/443' along with the http, etc..your computer will THEN DIAL BACK, as a kind of 'beacon' MAKING IT EVEN EASIER TO FIND YOU, but only if you are interesting enought to be worth 'hacking'...otherwise you are safe, security in anonyminity....millions of 'on line' computers, ll standard...

YES, they use 'ready made scripts', yes they find out your computer configuration ACPI/+startup ROM/flash...and then fetch from their existing databases, all they need to formulate on the spot the ideal 'single packet' intrusion...

NO, Microsoft is TOTALLY useless, and unfixable..UNIX is better, but only if you use its security, SELINUX and firewalls..AND BECAUSE IT IS NON-STANDARD, more difficult..but not for long...

So, for those interested...some ideas regarding REAL rather than 'pretend' computer security...all of those Microsoft antivirus systems, are TOTALLY USELESS, all the security features in MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL are totally useless...oh yah, the Cisco low-end firewall retail grade, for $200 is totally useless, i bought THREE of them and THEY BLEW OUT THE FLASHED PROGRAM ha ha aha...good thing there was a store warrantee...i returned each within ONE DAY...ha ha,

so windows 7 sucks. I should have known it was probably full of security holes just like most ms products.  What do you think about BSD?  I am running windows 2000 pro now with the SP4 patch. Everytime I think of upgrading, I read stuff like this and ask myself why do it?  All ,and I do mean all of the browsers suck. They are all memory hogs and are slow and continuously crash all the time. I long for the good old days of the late 90's when my computer was fast as greased lightning, but with all of the flash products on these websites ,etc, things on the net are slowing down I am afraid. I used to go read a lot on a website called  GRC.com . He has been at the forefront of security issues for a long time. He has suffered DRS attacks on his website from anonymous and he tracked down anonymous to their IRC client and created a spy bot and sat and watched them as they discussed attacking his site. Then he started talking to them and asked them why they were doing it. It was just a bunch of script kitties. They were impressed that he could spy on them on IRC.  They promised to call off the attacks and they did. He had a large bandwidth connection and they completely shut it down with DOS attack from bots on various computers. They triggered the attacks by sending out a certain message I believe. The bots not only attack but search for new unknowing clients to infect.  Matter of fact, Mr. Gibson, along with Verizon engineers, (the ones that really know what they are doing), tracked down many of the bots and told the people that their computer was being used in such a fashion. They had no idea. Such is life on the internet. Oh well, I digress.

if its for business use, i would go with Ubuntu... while its 'heavier' than some of the other Linux builds its is VERY easy to maintain and apt-get.... ah, apt-get what a joy...., just get comfortable with the shell rather than the GUI, in the long run you be more pleased with it. If its a computer for personal use.... i might get flamed for this, but.... get a Mac. I have never been more pleased with a computer than with my mac. I cut over right when the intel macs came out and have never regretted it. Currently run a 27" iMac with windows 7 installed under bootcamp (i like to keep that bugger jailed, i keep windows just for the Steam Store)

Any OS will work fine.

Stay updated

Get AVG or better anti virus if windows.

Use your firewall, native or 3rd party.

Don't open up your firewall like the other poster does. You do not want to accept connections that are not initiated by your system.

Install firefox, no script, abp, and whatever else you want.

Do not "open up" no script.

Don't EVER take advice from ANYONE on 4chan!

Don't download stuff you are not sure about and watch out for driveby downloads.

I can go neck deep into nasty shit just like this and come out fine everytime.

I have run all kinds of stuff:

*nix, OpenBSD, Plan9, Windows, solaris, SGI...

It all works.

Some are much more convient to use and require much less maintenance and tinkering.

If you have lots of time, OpenBSD can swallow it all! You will never spend more time to get less stuff working!

Mac, Windows, and ciertain Unix flavors (Ubuntu, etc) are pretty much daily driver easy (as you know).

If you run the OS you know the most about, you will be better off.

Load other stuff on an old junker and "play" with it when you have time. IMHO.

I take the approach that there is not much of anything other than the connection on my machine for anyone to get into. I keep the wireless disabled and in a faraday cage against college kids in security class learning how to war drive in my area.

I do have a real worry that my credit card issuer will force us never to have the old fashioned magnetic tape card and make use of the newest electronic cards that can hear and talk to anything compatible with it. Anyone can walk near you at a mall with a listener and hear what your card has to say and then go out and run it up.

That I worry about.

If you know about Faraday caging  than you know how to defeat listening. Foil, and a wire clipped to you belt buckle.

Extra tidbit from physics class: "Skin depth" required varies as frequency, so anti-shortwave caging can be Very thin. Charge pool required varies as flux wattage – portable consumer stuff is veerrry low, so not much of a ground needed.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a proxy server (virtual private network)?  Yes, you'll have to pay to conceal your IP, but like using encrypted email its not a bad price to pay for complete privacy and fully encrypted transmissions.  Then your IP will appear as if is coming from say, Burmuda (if that's where your paid proxy is located), instead of your actual location.  Hint:  choose a proxy with servers in a country with no info sharing with the US.

So, in your post...Fascism = Hacktivism.

Let's break down the unintelligence of that statement, shall we?

Fascism is the marriage of Corporate/Industry and Big Government.

Hacktivism as you describe, is the disruption of mostly Corp. websites that have been instructed by the Gov't in order to keep the integrity of the Corp/Gov't power in tact, and unchallenged.

Do you see the retarded nature of your ignorant statement yet.

The "Hacktivists" are actually trying to break the Fascist lock of VISA=Interpol=DOD=Mastercard=Paypal=House of Bush

Therefore, you are an idiot.  Go back to sleep.

Wed, 12/08/2010 - 22:26 | 791214 SWCroaker
SWCroaker's picture

1) I'm not as old as I thought.  First computer was an 8Mhz IBM PC, with a freaking green/black monitor.

2) Learn something every day.  Yesterday is was "queefing".  Today:

One might question why all control codes in the ASCII character set have low values, but the DEL control code has value 127. This is, because this specific character was defined for deleting data on paper tapes. Most paper tapes in that time used 7 holes to code the data. The value 127 represents a binary pattern were all seven bits are high, so when using the DEL character on an existing paper tape, all holes are punched and existing data is erased.

Wed, 12/08/2010 - 22:48 | 791258 New_Meat
New_Meat's picture

lmfao: I'm glad to ad a skoshi slice to the sum of human knowledge.

Of course the reason that I know this is that I generated many lines of DEL as I couldn't type worth a shit back then. (and no fair comparison with now).

Then you take the bag of punch holes and give them to the cheerleaders and ...

they smile and say thanks.

'twas ever so.

;-)

- Ned

[ed.][ed.-and don't ask]

dang, a mind is a terrible thing to waste.  I withdraw and rephrase:

I generated many COLUMNS of DEL, which is evident since one card .eq. one line.  And that's the truth.

Wow, my first one was a PDP-12.  A nice 12 bit computer (at the time people couldn't decide what the best word size was-8 or 12 bits?) with paper tape reader and a 4 kB memory size.  Used to have to hand input the bootstrap using binary instructions from toggle keys.  Lots of pretty lights to show the contents of the program counter and other registers.  That was how the debugging was done.  But if a light was burned out it could take awhile to discover the "bug" in the program!

my first paper tape (and last btw) was a Cincinatti Millacron (sp?) that had a tape thingie'.  My Dad and Uncle bought it for like 300k (huge, but paid itself off).  They had me make a cribbage board program.  Size of the board was specified.  Did all of the board spot drilling, quill movement all good, bevel the edges, optimal bed/tool movement.

Little did I know that a) they had this other project that was making offcuts exactly the size of the board blanks and b) they needed Napoleon's Corporal (C'est Moi!) to independently come up with CNC commands to confirm what they had done.  (safetys were in place, I didn't know that I couldn't have broken anything).

Young_Meat now has that board.

(I always had DEC in my mind as a "safety net for employment" (I'm a Masshole) for a job if real employment.  My wake up call was watching Polariod, then DEC, then ... implode.  So I'm sensitized to impending implosion.) yep, sensitized.

White Collar Holler
(Nigel Russell
)

Well, I rise up every morning at a quarter to eight.
Some woman who's my wife tells me not to be late.
I kiss the kids goodbye, I can't remember their names.
And week after week, it's always the same.

And it's Ho, boys, can't you code it, and program it right.
Nothing ever happens in the life of mine.
I'm hauling up the data on the Xerox line.

Then it's code in the data, give the keyboard a punch.
Then cross-correlate and break for some lunch.
Correlate, tabulate, process and screen.
Program, printout, regress to the mean.

Then it's home again, eat again, watch some TV.
Make love to my woman at ten-fifty-three.
I dream the same dream when I'm sleeping at night.
I'm soaring over hills like an eagle in flight.

Someday I'm gonna give up all the buttons and things.
I'll punch that time clock till it can't ring.
Burn up my necktie and set myself free.
Cause no one's gonna fold, bend or mutilate me.

I was a super-early telecommuter in 1983 for a TBTF bank with a phone cradle modem and pinned paper for 6 months.  It was actually a very appreciated accommodation by that bank at the time.

Also remember the cards, holding my breathe as I fed them into the giant computer in Evans Hall at Cal in the late 70s in the wee hours of the morning.  Even dropped them all once, of course recollecting in the wrong order.  Nightmares still when I just see that building.

This is probably the true 21st century equivalent of a late 18th century pub.  The authorities don't really go in there because there is a lot of stupid, inane crap, and it doesn't seem like much harm can come of it, and any conversations that go on are completely anonymous and etherial (absolutely all trace is gone within hours if not minutes).
