UN Security Council Authorizes Libya No-Fly Zone: 10 For 5 Abstain 0 Against

Tyler Durden's picture

The vote by the UN Security Council to
impose a no-fly zone on Libya and take "all necessary measures" to
protect Libyan civilians from government-led attacks, has passed with a vote of 10 to 5. The vote "will also allow military intervention to enforce the
ban, and calls to take "all necessary measures" to protect civilians and
civilian populated areas under threat of attack." The UN Security Council Resolution was backed by 10 countries, enough
to pass, while 5 other countries - including Russia, China and Germany -
chose to abstain. None voted against. Next up: CNN's ratings go through the roof as everyone picks up where they left off in the Gulf War with watching 1st person perspectives of bombing sorties taking out various Libyan targets. German planes however will be missing: Merkel's state refuses to participate at all in the bombing.

Below, Al Jazeera live footage of Benghazi rejoicing:

From BBC:

British forces could be in action over Libya as early as Friday, if a UN resolution is agreed, a senior government source has told the BBC.

BBC political editor Nick Robinson said the source stressed talks were continuing and it could take longer, but would be within days of a yes vote.

The UN Security Council is due to vote imminently on whether to authorise a no-fly zone in Libya.

Russia and China are expected to abstain, rather than use their veto.

The vote comes as Col Gaddafi warned people in rebel stronghold Benghazi his troops are coming "tonight" and there would be "no mercy" - he told rebels that those who laid down their weapons would be pardoned.

Senior UN sources said British and French war planes could be in the air within hours to carry out initial air raids on Libyan positions, if the resolution is passed, possibly with logistical support from Arab allies.

Time for Gaddafi to get some more plastic surgery.

Seriously, this is sick... can't believe the populous fall for this "we're going in to save the poor citizens" ploy time and time again. The scams are sooo big and obvious now that people literally can't see what's in front of them. It was only a couple of months back that Gaddafi was an ally and meeting with western 'leaders'... maybe this is when they hatched this whole show... wonder when Gaddafi will be on the payroll of JPMorgan?

Why do you cast the hypothesis that people fall for the plot? People in the US support the scheme. They know how advantageous it is to smear freedom, justice and truth in order to advance their personal interests.

US citizens are not gullible, they are not manipulated by a so called elite. They are plentifully and willingfully active actors of the whole drama.

These are early stages where opinion and circumstances change by the minute. But the rebels have said, we don’t want interference but we do want a no-fly zone. They need help desperately.  And a no-fly requires an incredible amount of effort.

As for Sarkozy, he’s just blowing around; he’s not going to do anything.

If the U.S. and the U.N. don’t use ground troops, the Libyans may be able to establish their own government.  Gaddafi is prepared to launch an invasion of Libya’s second largest city, Benghazi, and take it from the rebels.  If his helicopter gunships and jet fighter planes can be prevented from covering Gaddifi’s assault, and if ground fighting is limited to just  tanks, I think the rebels may be able to hold him back.

At this point, it’s hard to be a purist and simply say "hands off" no matter what, particularly with the slaughter going on.

This is a unified freedom movement from people wanting to overthrow the government – this is more than oil.  These people saw what was happening in Egypt and Tunisia, and they said this is our time to step out and do something.  They deserve to have a chance to do that.

They tried peaceful protest, to ask for changes in the government, and it was “nothing doing”  -  just as in Yemen.

They are fighting for freedom for themselves and their families; it’s not the same as some African potentate trying to take over from another African potentate.  It’s like America in 1776 fighting to overthrow a dictator.  What good is the U.N if it can’t give these freedom fighters a little help?

If the U.N double crosses these people, then the U.N. needs to be defunded because it becomes unhelpful to the causes of the world and freedom. World opinion is different now on having the United States sponsor the Libyan government.

“This administration,” according to Ron Paul,” has stated that nothing is off the table as they discuss US responses to the unrest.”  As Paul says, “This sort of talk is alarming on so many levels.”

Yes.  And if the alarming talk becomes alarming action, then God help the Libyans.

Nice narrative, supported by no evidence. Those guys have no past, no records, only propagandists weave webs of alleged motives.

The worst for them is that since this hypothesis is cast to support western intervention, whatever happens afterwards will have to fit the hypothesis. Whatever regime comes into place, it will be a regime for freedom and sold as such.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the momentous events in the Middle East began with one man, and they began in the tiny nation of Tunisia. That man was 26-year-old Mohamed Bouazizi. The quest for freedom unifies.

Rose Wilder Lane, in The Discovery of Freedom, credits one man with starting the revolution against the British Empire. I quote :

“One man began that war. And who knows his name?

“He was a farmer, asleep in his bed, when someone pounded on his door and shouted in the night, ‘The troops are coming!’

“What could he do against the King’s troops?  One man.  If he had been the King, that would have been different.  Then he could have done great things. Then he could have set everything to rights, he could have made everyone good and prosperous and happy, he could have changed the course of history.  But he was not a King, not a Royal Governor, not a rich man, not even prosperous, not important at all, not even known outside the neighborhood.  What could he do?  What was the use of trying to do anything? One man, even a few men, cannot stand against the King’s troops.  He had a wife and children to think of; what would become of them, if he acted like a fool?

“Most men had better sense; most men knew they could do nothing and they stayed in bed that night in Lexington.  But one man got up. He put on his clothes and took his gun and went out to meet the King’s troops.  He was one man who did not consent to a control which he knew did not exist.

“The fight on the road to Lexington did not defeat the British troops. What that man did was to fire a shot heard around the world, and still heard. One finger on one trigger began the war for the revolution…”

Lane’s point: It’s still continuing, one man’s fight – Everyman’s fight - against tyranny.

The US should stay out of Libya.

Our Founders' foreign policy rested on neutrality, non-interventionism, non-entanglement, and encouraged only commercial partnerships.

I'd like nothing more than to see Gaddafi chased out of Libya. But, chased out of Libya by Libyans. And, hey, if Libyans have a friend in neighboring countries willing to support the Libyan people, that's fine---that's their business.

The US has got to stop meddling in the political affairs of sovereign nations whose affairs do not directly threaten the peace and prosperity of our nation.

We are choking on the misguided web of entanglement foreign policy.

Thanks for your Reply, buzzard.

I think you can be certain that when "military armaments" are sold from one nation to another nation, strings are always attached, i.e. political entanglements.

(I'm sure you weren't suggesting US private commercial enterprises, such as Smith & Wesson, was doing "business" with Gaddafi. I'm pretty sure S&W is not rolling out tanks, APCs, anti-aircraft batteries, artillery, attack helicopters, fighter jets, and gun boats.)

Commercial partnership implies business to business enterprise---not government to government.

Who will replace Gaddafi? The rebels are not a unified force. It is composed of seperatist, jihadist, former soldiers, regular folk. Russia and China are no doubt going to give arms to K-Daffy Duck. This will not be easy. Yeah the Libyan airforce look like shit but K-Daffy will bring a world of hurt if he is cornered. This is jus tlike Operation Iraqi freedom. A defence force is supposed to be a self defence force of the state in which the taxpayer plebs paid for it.

Merkel, whatever the motive, is doing the right thing.

World Wars are a result of a few, and then everyone going expeditionary ... to defend theirs, or some allies interests, ... in this case, even that rationale does not fit here.

Start a war, then don't expect someone else to fight it for you, that's military welfare, not humanitarian intervention.

go to a German airshow if you want to see the Luftwaffe.

It would be very unwise for the Germans to flex their muscle in the middle east, other than supporting the operation. For the middle east to achieve peace, this has to include Israel as well. But the Israeli Air Force is also not involved ,as far as I know.

As a German I feel very strongly, that Germany should not be at the forefront of this,

but rather they will lend their support to the US,Britain,France and Lebanon,

to help clean up this mess in the middle east, that has gone on for far too long.

Germans don't have a Hitler complex, they just know from experience what it feels like to live under a totalitarian regime that destroyed Germany.

Gaddafi is very much in the mold of Hitler,

even though there is no comparison as yet,

to the genocide and persecution unleashed on the civilian population.

And the world should never forget that...

what it feels like to live under a totalitarian regime that destroyed Germany.

You know that when Hitler came to power there were 45 DEMOCRATIC political minor Parties in the German Parliament ... and every one of them was headed up by a Triber?

Can you blame him and the people that elected him wanted to radically dismantle that, and clean house? (i.e. exile them … at first … it was years later when they wouldn’t go that it got real nasty)?

Don't forget what the tribe's Central Bankers and Co did to Germany and its money, and society, which thus bought him forth as a popularly democratically elected leader, that everyone could get behind.

If your country was in that position, what would you do? Vote for the guy who was going to destroy that shit?

Yes you would.

The majority wanted to clean house. That’s the side of the story Hollywood will never tell you.

Perspective.

Russia and China first vetoed a no fly zone, mainly because they got oil interests in Libya.

If there is one veto vote agaist a solution, the UN can't move either way!

As a German I can understand their position, but I applaud the Leadership taken by France, Britain, Lebanon and the United States. It was high time they showed some leadership,

but due to the earlier opposition by China and Russia, this outcome was not easy to achieve.

Gaddafi has to go,the whole middle east is changing and changing fast.

So all fascist despots, thugs and corrupt murderers beware,

your time is up !

What 'leadership', someone delusional ill-disciplined twats start a war they can't possibly win... then beg a big power or 8 to intervene?

So they do?

No offence, but open your eyes.

What do you think happens next time? you know, like next month, or so. You realise we just made a big mistake? The road to hell is paved with good intents.

Quadaffi made a mistake.  He should have taken the gold and left.  Now he's going to die and so is his family.  He must be delusional to think the Europeans and Americans were going to sit on their arses while Ol' Muamar slaughtered his people sitting on a fountain of black gold.  But the Dictator just couldnt see the writing on the wall.  His Egyptian counterpart should have been enough forshadowing...past is prelude.

I suppose you wanted to sell some more arms for Oil to Gaddafi,

to support his totalitarian Regime and keep those delusional ill-disciplined twat slaves

in line..? excuse me Element, but your attitude is fucked !

Excuse me, but I don't sell arms to anyone.

I do not run a totalitarian regime either. It isn't in me.

A strawman is not anargument or refutation or negation of what I said.

Have a look at those rebels. They may want their freedom, for that I applaude them, and support them as a human being, but they are "delusional ill-disciplined twats".

Not much has changed in the Middle-East the way I see it.  Egypt is status quo.  Libya is meant to be a stale mate while we figure it out; we didn't want a rebel win not knowing what that meant.  We will let the Saudis do whatever they want with our tanks and F-15's.  U.S. still sandwiching Iran with our military.  It's all about the oil.  The last thing any major power wants is mid-east "democracy."  Isn't all this obvious?

you have no fucking Idea what you are really talking about.

You are a spoilt little Girlie-Man who has always had his arse wiped.living it up in the land of the free.If someone else wants to free themselves from shit, you want them to go back into their submissive hole ,so you can keep on typing shit into your Apple Computer, produced by slave-labour in China.

People like you, spoiled little Brats who have no regard for others disgust me.

Democracy might not be perfect, but it is the best we got right now and until Idiots like you realize that,we might have to stick to what we got .

Democracy might be the best but it requires that democracy is what these people are going to get. When one sees how undemocratic the process of building the EU zone has been, one could wonder if the Europeans themselves are convinced that democracy is the best.

Democracy is just a label, a badge attributed by cooption. It recovers nothing else.

Hillary said today that we are going to help the Tunisians and that the Libyan people should be protected. Maybe she has grown a heart this time. Maybe we should believe her. Maybe she has changed and is back down to two legs only? just saying.....should we be "hoping"? The navy says they are "good". When I wake up in the morn I'm sure Sarkozy will be bombing Libya, or maybe Cameron...What if they "accidently" hit some of the 'rebels'? Will those rebels become insurgents? Maybe they will become the new terrorists? or maybe Hillary will tell us she made a mistake and those rebels are actually Al Kaeda and we need to wipe them off the map. Who Knows?

Exactly as predicted in this February 6th chart, the second peak related to supply interruptions begins. It will reach Brent 125-130 by April 1st, when either Gadaffi will be finished, or demand will drop, because of price of e.g. Japan going nuclear.

http://www.saposjoint.net/Forum/download/file.php?id=2609

Now of course this second spike in Oil will not help stocks, the nicely follow the slope of decline I predicted on February 6th. I predicted the peak date correctly, and slope for more than 1,5 months ahead. I think the prediction will be correct also for next months.

http://www.saposjoint.net/Forum/download/file.php?id=2608

What is more interesting, is a prediction for a final spike in silver (and similarly gold) before 40-50% correction coming very soon, at about 45 USD. I do not know what can be causing that spike in silver and correction - Japans QE and following sales of its gold reserves? Or dollar strengthening on Libyas war and Europes problems? I do not know, but the aggregate of all events will make silver look like it is in the chart. Its currently going hyperexponential for too long, and to fast, and that never lasts. Exponential growth can last, superexponential- never.
