US Begins Massive Military Build Up Around Iran, Sending Up To 4 New Carrier Groups In Region

Tyler Durden's picture

As if uncontrollable economic contagion was not enough for the administration, Obama is now willing to add geopolitical risk to the current extremely precarious economic and financial situation. Over at Debkafile we read that the president has decided to "boost US military strength in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions in the short term with an extra air and naval strike forces and 6,000 Marine and sea combatants." With just one aircraft carrier in proximity to Iran, the Nobel peace prize winner has decided to send a clear message that peace will no longer be tolerated, and has decided to increase the US aircraft carrier presence in the region by a 400-500% CAGR.

From Debka:

Carrier Strike Group 10, headed by the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, sails out of the US Navy base at Norfolk, Virginia Friday, May 21. On arrival, it will raise the number of US carriers off Iranian shores to two. Up until now, President Barack Obama kept just one aircraft carrier stationed off the coast of Iran, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Arabian Sea, in pursuit of his policy of diplomatic engagement with Tehran.

For the first time, too, the US force opposite Iran will be joined by a German warship, the frigate FGS Hessen, operating under American command.

It is also the first time that Obama, since taking office 14 months ago, is sending military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. Our military sources have learned that the USS Truman is just the first element of the new buildup of US resources around Iran. It will take place over the next three months, reaching peak level in late July and early August. By then, the Pentagon plans to have at least 4 or 5 US aircraft carriers visible from Iranian shores.

The USS Truman's accompanying Strike Group includes Carrier Air Wing Three (Battle Axe) - which has 7 squadrons - 4 of F/A-18 Super Hornet and F/A-18 Hornet bomber jets, as well as spy planes and early warning E-2 Hawkeyes that can operate in all weather conditions; the Electronic Attack Squadron 130 for disrupting enemy radar systems; and Squadron 7 of helicopters for anti-submarine combat (In its big naval exercise last week, Iran exhibited the Velayat 89 long-range missile for striking US aircraft carriers and Israel warships from Iranian submarines.)

Another four US warships will be making their way to the region to join the USS Truman and its Strike Group. They are the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy and guided missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill, USS Oscar Austin and USS Ross.

We can't wait for Iran to feel completely unthreatened by this escalation and to decide to take no action whatsoever as the Nobelists push it even more into a corner from which the only escape, to a rational player, would be outright aggression... Which begs the question just how an irrational player would react.

h/t Mark

Would be easy to orchestrate a false flag attack.

Have your own soldiers dress up as Iranians and kill some US guys in that outpost near Iran/Afghan border. Make it front and center news around the world and .. retaliate.

Been there, done that. Not for the US though.

No way Iran gets attacked. Let's not forget that Obama blocked recently the sale of bunker busting bombs to Israel.

Someone is planning on using them.......waiting for them to GO Nuclear( as in weapons building is insanity).

We have two NUTCAKES loose on the globe.

Kim Jong ,and Rasputin the mad monk..........BOTH need to be put out of OUR misery.

NK, torpedo's a SK ship, kills 37? sailors, and tells the world if any sanctons are brought it means war.Hello?, it patently obvious no ONE IS HOME.

Ever notice how Bush and Obama are never in the same place at the same time? It dawned on me when I spotted a dab of shoe polish on Bush's collar at his $150k desecration of the English language at Calgary.

A quick check of the map shows that we have had Iran surrounded since 2003.

Boots on the ground.

Boots on the ground.

Lookin' like a fool with your boots on the ground.

I don't think this naval deployment means war, yet.  Technically, the US has been "at war" in the region since 1990, trading pot shots in the Iraq no-fly zone for over a decade.  If it comes down to an expansion of hostilities in the region, my guess is that Obama will try the air-power option before getting his boots dirty.

I am reminded of the opening to the Road Warrior:

"But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior

the man we called Max.

To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time

when the world was powered by the black fuel

and the deserts sprouted great cities of pipe and steel.

Gone now swept away.

For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war

and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all.

Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw.

The thundering machines sputtered and stopped.

Their leaders talked and talked  and talked

but nothing could stem the avalanche.

Their world crumbled  the cities exploded.

A whirlwind of looting

a firestorm of fear.

Men began to feed on men.

On the roads it was a white-line nightmare.

Only those mobile enough to scavenge

brutal enough to pillage would survive.

The gangs took over the highways

ready to wage war for a tank of juice."

This deployment is so late (8 months) that it couldn't have anything to do with our immediate economic/geopolitical situation. So everyone chill.

Read this, something has to be done.....either by Israel or us.

These Fkrs are loose cannons. And the Belief in the 12th Imam, about to show, is the catalyst they will use.

If Iran is allowed to go nuclear, NO one in the region will be safe.

The Iranians(Aryans), are persians, not Arab's.......the Fkr's are nuts.

You're right, something has to be done. I suggest we start by actually READING the article that you've linked. A politician saying something conservative when he's speaking to a group of ultra-conservatives? OMG, launch the fleet and remove all the fail-safes!

Also, did you not notice that his comment was a statement regarding what would happen if IRAN were attacked first? So, what, you want this to be a self-fulfilling prophecy? Now who's nuts?

And finally, the Iranians are not nuts. They're people, going about their daily lives without some of the benefits that you enjoy, just doing the best they can. This puerile demonization of an entire country based on the lunatic utterings of a few of its politicos is what's nuts. Oh, and your conclusion that they're nuts because they're Persian, not Arab, is what? Xenophobic, racist, what?

Sweet merciful magillicutty. One post about a fleet replacement and I'm jumping all over the place trying to stamp out these nonsensical war drums. What happened? Was there an XBox flash crash, so all the Call of Duty players have nothing to do tonight? Don't those damn things come with parental controls?

I must rest now.

Thank you Rick.

I don't often have an awful lot to contribute here, as this is mainly a financial site and I am not highly educated or experienced in many of the issues laid bare, so I take the opportunity to chime in when I feel like I do have something of merit to add.

I've been through all this before during the run up to Bush's Folly. Then, it cost me friendships, professional acquaintances, and ultimately, my career. Of course, it didn't matter that I was proven right, but at least I can sleep well at night knowing I didn't remain quiet and on the sidelines.

I won't do it this time either, which is why it's so painful for me to watch the internet warriors start to strap on their gunbelts every time Iran is mentioned. It's really all so pointless, especially when it's coming from posters on a site ostensibly devoted to cutting through the crap to get to the real meat of a problem.

Agree totally. Its just manipulation of the masses by means of propaganda and to what end. I believe we could put our energy into something productive instead of destructive and come out with better results. All the best.

Nothing quite like a war to rally the good US sheeple into raging patriotic masses...

Right before elections.

And hey, when you can just print all the money you need to pay for it, it's free - Right?

Even better, it's a well known fact people are far happier suffering hardship if they feel they're doing it to "Fight the Good Fight", rather than because their leaders royally screwed up the economy.

Maybe it's time to qualify for the right to vote:

- must be a tax payer, not a leech

- must understand basic macro economic principles

Sure, you could add many others, but not allowing leeches to vote for their own entitlement payouts would be a biggie, imo.

Ahhhhh! Now there's a good idea!!

Let's stir up some non-existent shit in the Persian Gulf. Add another carrier, some battle ships, maybe an air support group.......you know, just enough iron to make sure an "incident" occurs.

That ought to take the focus off of the one quadrillion dollars in derivatives sitting on the "Big Four's" shelf for a while.

In addition, if we do actually start another war, Iraq will make an excellent forward base for our troops.

Better start building more daisy cutters and MOAB's.
