US Energy Chief Says Partial Meltdown Has Occurred At Fukushima, Urges All Us Citizens Within 80 KM To Evacuate

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: Britain follows US in recommending all nationals in Tokyo and north of Tokyo evacuate

More on the earlier news that Steven Chu "thought" a partial meltdown may have occurred, the just released news escalates the verbiage, which is now a definitive: "US Energy Chief says 'partial meltdown' occurred at the Fukushima Plant." The next step is his urgent recommendation for all US citizens who live within 80 kilometers of Fukushima to evacuate or take shelter indoors. Oddly enough, for the Japanese the evacuation radius is a fraction of this, but it is probably due to the government's recent arbitrary decision to pick a number of 250 millisieverts as the maximum safe threshold for NPP workers. Somehow we assume this means Japanese DNA is about 2.5 times more resilient to damaging alpha, beta and gamma radiation, than that extracted from the US and all other countries.

We urge Japanese readers who have not already done so, to follow Chu's advice and to get the hell away from Dodge, and evacuate to a minimum 50 mile safe distance.

They have two different types of meltdowns.

One is the partial or complete melting of the rods within the containment core.

The other is the melting puddle of death burning 'through' the containment core and into the earth it's self.

BTW...all that seawater they are pumping into the core now...either it all evaportates into the air or....flows back into the sea.

Either way, they ain't talkin' about it and its impact.

Good points.  I haven't heard anyone say how much sea water is being pumped.  It would be interesting to hear an estimate on how much sea water has been pumped and what the projected environmental impact is from the water vapor and/or the water that doesn't vaporize.

If I write a heavily factual post, even referencing technical literature, I get ZERO replies.  Consequently, I must conclude that nobody is particularly interested in factual discussion.

As for the Japanese... in the military you do what you're fucking told.  Culturally, moreso in the Japanese military.  You don't steal helicopters like Wil Smith and go looking for your lost stripper girl friend.  They're doing what they're told, and they're doing it as quick as they can and probably without much regard for their own safety or the plight their own relatives might be in.  I would feel safe saying that the same people who produced a grand total of 1k live prisoners from an army of 20k on Iwo Jima are not cowering and sucking their thumbs in despair.  The scale of this is beyond belief... it's not some shit creek levee bust in Reddick, Mississippi.

Tokyo Electric Power has estimated the extent of small holes or cracks in the fuel rods, based on the amount of radioactive material in the coolant.

It says 43 percent of the fuel rods in the No.1 reactor were possibly damaged at 1 PM on Tuesday, but the ratio had increased to 70 percent by 3:25 PM.
At the No.2 reactor, the ratio rose to 33 percent from 14.

In both reactors, the coolant levels are low, exposing the fuel rods. Sea water is being pumped into the reactors to cool them down, but the coolant level remains low, creating the risk of a meltdown.
Damaged fuel rods would leak radioactive material.

The pressure inside the reactors is sinking and Tokyo Electric Power is monitoring the data carefully while continuing to pump more sea water.

He's on ESPN making his picks and he's flying to South America in the next few days.

What are the radiation readings over the Pacific?

FEMA, DOD, DOE, NRC, NOAA, NASA?  Boy Scouts?

Every public university physics department in America  and high schools needs to get a real time Geiger counter on their roof connected to the RadiationNetwork.com. Today.

There is NO reporting on the isotopes involved and their ranges.

That is important, regardless of how remote their travel to the US is.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo issued the advice in a statement distributed to reporters accompanying Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on a trip to Egypt.

"We are recommending, as a precaution, that American citizens who live within 50 miles of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant evacuate the area or to take shelter indoors if safe evacuation is not practical," it said.

“We are trying to monitor it very closely,” he said. “We hear conflicting reports about exactly what is happening in the several reactors now at risk. I would not want to speculate about what is happening.”

And where is Nero? Where is he? I mean, nuclear clusterfocks, slaughter in the middle east, oil crisis, economy in peril with ChairBeast Bernanke doing even more (than usual, which is a lot) serious damage to the integrity, equilibrium and balance of all markets, and he's nowhere to be found.

There was a time when the United States led the world - warts, sins and all - but it led the world. And the President of the United States was the person to lead.

Obama is every central banker's and Wall Street's wet dream-water boy-butler. He's nowhere to be found, in any significant context, while the criminals and incompetents run around either stealing or smashing shit.

And don't even mention Congress, that useless cesspool of mutated DNA.

Japan, do you want 435 'volunteers' to work at your stricken reactors, because we have them. The bad news is they are grossly overpaid, they don't do shit and quite a few of them will steal anything that isn't nailed down (and are too stupid to know better than to lift something that's highly contaminated with nuclear isotopes).

Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government. We are governed, our minds molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested largely by men we have never heard of … in almost every act of our lives whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind.

I will repeat what I said on the thread last night...TEPCO must now resign themselves to letting meltdowns occur and just put every effort into preventing catstrophic fire.

the reactors themselves are not the major issue here and never actually were.  The Spent Fuel Ponds are.  They have no containment vessel.

People would be wise to read that DOE publication I referenced a day ago which conducted experiments on zircaloy clad fuel rods in the scenario of a "terrist" attack or other accident targeted at an SFP which drained water levels.

It remains highly improbable that reactor meltdowns will cause a catastrophic radiation release.  However, SFPs on-site contain astoundingly more radioactive materials and none of these are in any kind of containment vessel.

Again, the highest priority for TEPCO at this time is fire suppression.

From Stoneleigh at The Automatic Earth:

"It is important to note that the distribution and level of radioactive contamination from the Fukushima disaster is likely to be very much less than at Chernobyl, as boiling water reactors (BWRs) like those at Fukushima do not have the potential for the same failure mode as occurred at the Chernobyl RBMK plant. Chernobyl suffered a nuclear explosion on an abrupt power surge aggravated by a moderator fire."

this passage isn't accurate.  The explosion of Chernobyl was a steam explosion, not a nuclear one.

The REAL problem was not that, it was the high temperature fire.

This is why I have been saying since last night that the SFPs are the real danger here.  In fact, on NHK right now, they are hammering this point.

If this turns into a Chernobyl disaster, it will be by the same means- a catastrophic high-temperature fire.  This can occur by virtue of zircaloy's exposure to oxygen.

Again, pulled from The Automatic Earth:

The Automatic Earth's senior editor Stoneleigh is a nuclear safety expert. The subject of her master thesis at the Law Faculty of Warwick University in Coventry, England, was nuclear safety research.

After graduating in 1997, she became a Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, where her research field was power systems, with a specific focus on nuclear safety in Eastern Europe.

There are her credentials.  What is your field of expertise?

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The cause of the explosion at Chernobyl was not criticality-based, it was a steam explosion.  It was really rather similar to how old steam locos used to occasionally blow up.

These are the facts that are in the record.

Perma - the comments you posted by Stoneleigh refer to the nuclear reactors.  Trav's comments refer to the SFRs in the cooling pools.  Trav agrees with what she has to say about the reactors (based on his other comments).  But you post nothing of what she has to say about uncovered SFRs in the cooling pools.  What does she have to say about that.  Compare those comments of hers with what Trav is saying to see if there is any disagreement.

Does Wiki need a re-write (The Chernobyl explosions)?

Excerpted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster#Experiment_and_explosion

(1) A few seconds after the start of the scram, a massive power spike occurred, the core overheated, and seconds later resulted in the initial explosion. Some ... fuel rods fractured, blocking the control rod columns ... control rods to become  stuck ... one-third of the way. Within three seconds ... output rose above 530 MW. ...

[so,] a great rise in power caused an increase in fuel temperature and massive steam buildup with rapid increase in steam pressure. This destroyed fuel elements and ruptured the channels in which these elements were located.

Then according to some estimations, the reactor jumped to around 30 GW thermal, ten times the normal operational output.

There is a general understanding that it was steam from the wrecked channels entering the reactor inner structure that caused the destruction of the reactor casing, tearing off and lifting by force the 2,000 ton upper plate (to which the entire reactor assembly is fastened). Apparently this was the first explosion that many heard. ...

(2) A second, more powerful explosion occurred about two or three seconds after the first; evidence indicates that the second explosion resulted from a nuclear excursion. The nuclear excursion dispersed the core and effectively terminated that phase of the event. However, the graphite fire continued,

... the ratio of xenon radioisotopes released during the event provides compelling evidence that the second explosion was a nuclear power transient.

So, the Graphite caught fire, She never said a "Nuclear one".

>> It is important to note that the distribution and level of radioactive contamination from the Fukushima disaster is likely to be very much less than at Chernobyl

Absolutely not true.

Chernobyl's massive effects were caused by a high temp fire as the reactor core (made of graphite) caught fire and carried nuclear core material out with the flames and ashes.

Fukushima reactors are not graphite but there are approximately 600,000 spent fuel rods with a Zirconium cladding that can and most likely WILL catch fire and carry spent reactor fuel material out with the flames and ash.

Oh and did I mention that the SPF's have no containment?

You know, there's been discussion of units 5 and 6 and I thought that perhaps I had misunderstood, but here it is again:

"The nuclear agency said Wednesday that the water level had dropped in the No. 5 reactor, which was not in service when the killer quake jolted northeastern Japan, posing the risk of overheating. The agency said it will closely monitor data on the reactor to prevent the problems that occurred at other reactors."

There is fuel in the goddamn thing, so in Unit 6 too.  6 units, 6 pools plus the intermediate building.

TEPCO is going to have to let the reactors rely on meltdown containment and focus on controlling SFP risk.

Without water in the SFPs to shield them, the entire site will be too hot for anyone to do anything.
