US To Materially Expand Food Stamp Program As America Prepares For Surge In "Poverty Effect"

Tyler Durden's picture

One of the sad side effects of the recent record in food stamp participation is that apparently the 44.2 million Americans who now subsist below the poverty line and rely on the government for basic food needs, have become quite a drag on otherwise insolvent state and local governments. And with monthly increases projected to keep rising in line with the Russell 2000 as the Wealth Effect is constrained to Wall Street, and no end in sight to the Poverty Effect, states are getting nervous. Never fear: the US taxpayer is here. In a press release, the USDA has just announced that it "will award grants to improve access to and increase participation in the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The grants are for
state and local governments and private non-profit organizations to
develop projects that simplify SNAP application and eligibility systems
and find efficiencies in the administration of the program with the goal
of providing critical nutrition assistance to those in need." Translation: the Fed is about to add the bailout if the Food Stamp program to the infinite list of subsidies that rely exclusively on the generosity of Vassarionovich-Packard.

And the funniest thing about the release, if one can call the progressive conversion of America to an improverished country funny, is the math provided by the USDA to justify the expansion of SNAP.

SNAP benefits, which are provided to recipients electronically, also provide an economic stimulus that strengthens communities. Research shows that every $5 in new SNAP benefits generates as much as $9.00 in economic activity. SNAP benefits move quickly into local economies, with 97 percent of SNAP benefits redeemed within a month. It is estimated that at least 8,900 full-time equivalent jobs are created from $1 billion of SNAP benefits.

So according to this Keynesian version of a perpetual engine, if only all of America's 330 million were to start collecting foodstamps, the benefit to the economy would essentially be 80%. As for the efficiency of the SNAP program, dividing $1 billion by 8,900 jobs, means that each job ends up costing a modest $112,360. That's government efficiency for you.

And the platitudes from the release continue:

These grants are part of a larger effort to end domestic hunger and improve the nutrition of all Americans in need," said Kevin Concannon, USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services. "The funding leverages our state and local partnerships to better reach individuals at risk of hunger and to increase SNAP participation among eligible households."

In 2009, more than 50 million individuals in the United States lived in food insecure households--over 17 million of them children. These households had difficulty providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources at some time during the year. SNAP provides crucial support to low income households by enhancing food purchasing power. Increasing access to this important nutrition program will help struggling individuals and families purchase more healthy food.

In other words, just like the Libyan invasion, this is a humanitarian intervention. Perhaps the government can just start shooting silver-tipped rockets at its population thereby creating an infinite economic growth curve once everyone is homeless, jobless and hungry. We can only hope that just like in Libya, Obama will use silver-tipped rockets which can subsequently be recycled into currency, which will immediately result in several million charges of domestic terrorism.... Assuming of course there is enough physical for that modest "wealth effect" detour.

‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? ‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

Matthew 25:35

I like what Jesus said.

However, it is bad when governments force charity, especially in a democracy, when it is then merely a matter of politicians buying votes.

He also said in the very next chapter   Matt 26:11   The poor you will have with you always....

Now I don't think that means you don't don't help them... I just think it means it's never ending.

He sure "nailed" that one.

A few summers ago a derelict, holding a 'will work for food' sign , and I made eye contact at a stop sign. I didn't have any 'work' for him but offered him $5 if he would give me 50 push ups. I turned and stopped and offered the $5 bill but the derelict just gave me the finger! What does it take to do 50 pushups? 5 maybe 10 minutes if you are weak.

Why are you asking for pushups? Its a moral call at heart.

Maybe it was how you asked? some still cling to what little they may have of dignity.

"Poverty is a hard enough thing without adding to it."

-I cant find the quote. :)

Perhaps USDA is working in concert with FEMA as both agencies implement their roles in a Continuity of Government contingency. If the dollar collapses and those SNAP cards stop working, what better way to compile a list of new "residents" for all of those FEMA camps in the USA.

Very interesting serotonindumptruck.  I am thinking a 'sweep' will eventually have to occur as FEMA and the National Guard (trucked in from out-of-state to avoid, uh, conflict of interest) finally put their feet down and set up 3-hots-and-a-cot tent cities to handle the overrun.

Here's another thought - conceal that you have any money at all.  I found myself starting to prosper right when the general populace was beginning its roller-coaster descent (2005-2006).  Because I am an organic Pessimist, my time had come.  I was a little too generous with people in my circle; no more.

It is astonishing how broke people are in the U.S.

I wonder if you can get SNAP to pay for pot luck community dinners. Maybe even get then  to support a community BBQ.

The problem isn't so much the program or the expansion, its the lack of community that it supports.

For the money spent on SNAP we could get farmers and ranchers to throw a big BBQ every day, for everyone who wanted to come.

The pure waste of money is just....tragic.

- Known wage stagnation

- High unemployment

- Low paying jobs are the bulk of what is available

- All leverage with corporations

- Diminishing benefits

All the while.....

- Deliberate money printing to devalue the currency

- Zero interest rates, starving savers of income

- Rapid inflation in necessities

Seems pretty deliberate to me......

I know a guy who left jail after a 2 year stint for a DUI.  He now works under the table for $25/ hour plus has full health, dental and food stamps.  Makes me happy to be paying my income tax - nevermind that health insurance premium.  There are far too many of these people that take advantage of the system because it's too easy to do.  If they got rid of the corruption alone just think of the savings.

When you can print your own money "price" is no object.

Food stamps are nothing but a way to increase money supply by the back door. JPmorgan runs the program, and the SNAP system injects fake food credits a la money supply into the economy.
I' m sure JP is gaming that system if not outright trading snap cash for dollars. They print snap out of thin air...like dollars...except there is no corresponding BOND.
So, fake money is the norm. Food credits, dollar credits, tax credits- ou name it, its all fake holographic nonsense.
And, this keeps the poor out of the bread lines and keeps corporate american ecstatic! Notice that po' people can buy soda, doritos and crap but cannot buy organic food? What the fuck is that about?

I am of the opinion that its high time that this 44.2 million people number on food stamps have some sort of heuristics or birth/death like adjustment made immediately.

  1. We can effectively lower the # people on food stamps by instituting a weight quotient. Each person on food stamps will be required to report their weight. Non compliance will err in the 80-96 lb category (.6 of a person). Those who weigh less eat less, and therefore shouldn't be counted as whole persons. Also, it can be assumed that since those on food stamps will eat less, each month we can lower their weight by a mandatory 3%.
  2. We assume that a monthly decrease of 1-2% of all individuals who use food stamps are fraudulent claims.
  3. We integrate a component that subtracts food stamps participants by using projected deaths that aren't yet or ever reported. Say...1.5% per month reduction. We know this must be the case because of the nature of GMO food intake, HFCornSyrup intake, and Vice products purchased with said stamps.

These prompt and effective revisions would make me feel much better.

The politicians make rules only to help those who are useful to them.

They bail out the bankers and the rich corporations (who should not be in business because of their incompetencies) without even changing their previous management because they fund the election campaigns and also place them in their organisations at exorbitant salaries once they leave office. This class alongwith the rich individuals pay the minimum amount of tax while getting the maximum benefit of the tax collected from the rest of the population in the form of bailouts.

The politicians make promises to unions and pay them salaries which the employees in the private sector can only dream of in return for votes which would get them elected.

What use are the rest of the citizens for the politicians? They are just burden on the money available to be distributed to the bankers, corporates, rich individuals and unions. Hence they would be the first to loose their privileges.
