US Naval Update: To The Shores Of Tripoli
Those who have been following our series of US naval updates will not be surprised to learn that US forces are amassing around Tripoli. The LHD-3 Kearsarge is now within striking distance, and certainly within No Fly Zone enforcement, while the CVN 65, which according to some prior reports had already passed the Suez, is waiting just on the Southern tip of the canal. This is somewhat odd as it indicates that Naval command is still split as to where the Enterprise may be needed more: Libya or off the Persian Gulf where the Vinson is keeping watch for a potential Iran escalation. Of course, should Iran flare up, it is likely that Pakistan, Afghanistan and even India could rapidly go downhill which is why the US will probably need two aircraft carriers before it considers a full on attack against Iran. But the most surprising development was the launch of all three San Diego based aircraft carriers which three weeks ago were all sitting peacefully, their crews binging in the Gaslamp District, and since moving on to new deployment areas, most of which in the Pacific theater. Which means that very soon, the US will promptly need to get the 7 aircraft carriers that are currently at home port back in commission as things are heating up faster than the US can appropriately cover.

State Dept laying groundwork for the waiver in UN rez 1970 which will allow us to arm the rebels. Its heating up.
What are the US objectives in Libya?
Are the USA ready to invade Libya and to repeat the Iraqi nightmare?
What good will no-fly zone over Libya do? Anti-Gaddafi forces could be much worst news for America than this desert Clown selling Libyan oil to the West for-free.

really? did you hear hillary - cant do anything unless there is world consensus.
have to check with the chinese, russia, chavez, uruquay
Dont knock Uruguay... That is the bug out country of choice...
Is this "world consensus" like the "World Series" baseball??
Stockpiles at Cushing don't matter if there's any new flare in the next two weeks. Upside risk still greater.

No real biggie!
Very High Indeed! I only have April options on USO but am confident by expiration it's all over, already! Wouldn't want to roll them over, but if I have to...:)!
O/T
Don't know if it's been mentioned on the boards or not but the unions in Wisconsin have been stripped of their collective bargaining rights.
will obama send in the troops or holder to get back the rights? holder lawsuit around the corner
It would be rich if the Dems returned and got arrested, shortly thereafter a recess announced 'till 2012
WI Senatorz still holding their breath until they turn .. er .. BLUE!

I've been lurking on MSNBC and CNN for a mega dose of schadenfreude and they all look like their puppy just died.
What's good for the goose, what they to us on obama care, is good for the gander.
Hmm...makes sense.

Don't miss that CVN 76 battle group going to S. Korea for joint operations. I smell saber rattling.
BBC reporting that three of its reporters were detained, beaten and subject to mock executions by Libyan military.

Not so sure they were "reporters", eh!
But of course they were "reporters"-just like those "Arabs" with the British accents driving around Basra blowing shit up were.
Maybe they should stay the hell out of a warzone. If not, then don't complain about harsh treatment
They'll report whatever it takes to get their public to support military action to benefit BP, duh
This movie is getting really good. I wonder if Gaddafi gets the nurse back or if she finds a new despot to snuggle up with.
Shhh, don't tell me how it ends. I want to be surprised.
eh? people are dying
For the end of the movie they splice in the Scarface finale and FX Mickey Rourke into the Tony role as "The King of Africa".
Considering all that's going on these days, at times sarcasm and satire are really very difficult to recognize.
The nurse is working on a book contract and negotiating with skinmags for the photo spread.
I hear Bill Clinton's been trying to get her number.
She's his type: a pig.
spoken like a true novelist/screenwriter...or whatever it is you do :)
This, too, is bullish, right? Unemployment Welfare report must be really bad.
(And Eric PlaceHolder is forcing NYC to hire morons of the right 'groups' to the NYFD.)
does that include the black panthers
Most likely. Need a source of fires to fight.
They really don't need an aircraft carrier to enforce a no fly zone. There are a few airbases in Italy (US & NATO) within striking range of Libya. If there was a will to do this, they could have done it by now with or without the US Navy. Let the Italians and French deal with Libya.
Yep! No "fly zone", just little INVASION!
Yep, put it on EU for this mess. We have no business interfering.
We only have to funnel $billions to the victors - and Calypso Louie.
EU has no business interfering either
Ok, just send Calypso Louie over.
So that's why those bases are in Italy! All this time I'd thought there were still a few stubborn pockets of German resistance.
haven't you seen Stripes? They use Italy to invade Czechoslovakia with the EM-50.
Now make the bunk beds please, If we were in Germany, I would have to do it, but since its italy...
I think that is what Obama set out to do. I am beginning to think his gut reactions are usually right, but he gets bullied and pushed around and ends up caving in.
If his gut reaction was to stay out of much involvment in Egypt and Libya and let Europe deal with it he was right and he should have stuck to his guns.
Obama's gut reaction?!!!! Please use the sarc indicator for a statement like that. Here's is a verbatim transcript of Obama's gut reaction...."duuuuuh, can somebody fix the teleprompter" our fearless TOTUS has no clue.
Is there any kind of official resolution authorizing this action, or is all that passe now?
Not since WWII. Harry Turman got rid of that pesky section of the US Constitution when he went to the UN to get permission for the Korean War.
You have to wonder where the m-i-c gets the money for all these soon to be wars. Oh yeah, their side kick Ben aka Ba'al that is stealing from the sleeping giant. ??Will this sleeping giant ever wake the fuck up?? Aldous said it best...
A democracy which makes or even effectively prepares for modern, scientific war must necessarily cease to be democratic. No country can be really well prepared for modern war unless it is governed by a tyrant, at the head of a highly trained and perfectly obedient bureaucracy.
FLASH: Just now, Wisconsin Senate Republicans, lacking the one Democrat vote they would need for a quorum to pass the controversial budget bill, instead formed a special committee to isolate only the collective bargaining portions of the bill and passed it, not needing the budget bill requirement of 20 voters.
An identical bill now must pass the lower branch (assembly) before the governor can sign it.
The bill is said to remove most of the collective bargaining provisions for state public employees, with the exception of police and fire. It’s believed the bill, like the budget bill provisions, allows some collective bargaining related to salaries.
Took them long enough to get it on. Those Dim union whores are worthless.
Especially if they end up loosing to the Koch Whores.
we are on, like donkey kong, tyler. this is exciting†
naval grazing,
or whatever that term means.
With all that throw sitting off shore, why we can have those oil facilities ablaze in under an hour.
New meaning of 'Fight Club'.
Burn, baby, burn!
Really, seriously, whoever is writing this has gotta get a clue:
a) gatorz suck at just like roaming around in the ocean, so it is the ARG that has Kearsarge and others assigne.
b) if Kearsarge is in 'striking distance' (whatever that means) then, well Kearsarge is within 'STRIKING DISTANCE'--that means, nay that close.
c) the ARG with whatever is aboard now (remember the '400 Marines / several platoons' thing) plus ammo/Class x, u name it, is not even close to executing joint operations. So, a zoomie gets the golden bee-bee (Scott what's his name in Bosnia, the one who gave up the stealth fighter remains to China?) and we can't get his ass out? Not happenin' yet.
The future actions will be nothing ad hoc--they will be (whatever they will be) orchestrated, refined, folded, spindled, mutilated, ROE all set up to blame the shooters/nay blame Hillary (esp.), Gates, Kerry will have "advocated for a smarter approach"
Train wreck coming.

Thought the ARG was a command ship......damn.
"Amphibious Readiness Group" e.g. http://www.navy.mil/navydata/navy_legacy_hr.asp?id=148
but that is just like the library catalog. Book is in/book is checked out/book is lost/ book is with my dog. Who plays is function of a lot of things.
Then, well, it depends on who is aboard. 26th MEU is supposed to be/portions were aboard, but http://www.marines.mil/unit/26thmeu/Pages/welcome.aspx seems 3/8 MAR in the Afghan with???
Why I'm saying, no play any time soon. Let alone time to reposition zoomies, tankers, "NATO UNITS <snicker>"
All of this is open source, and the really good readers of open source are way ahead of all of us. Bugeaterz? who knows? but not enough NCA "consensus" to commit--SEE WB7 this afternoon for why.

"They really don't need an aircraft carrier to enforce a no fly zone. There are a few airbases in Italy (US & NATO) within striking range of Libya"
we've seen this movie before......it's another one of those milo minderbender thingy's......and....all of your rich facebook friends....they'll understand.....
There's a US naval air base in Sicily that could be used for fast jets - can't remember the name.....
Yes - NAS Sigonella - a logistics hub for naval transport and patrol aircraft - this is the closest US air base to Libya as far as I can tell.
USAF F-15Es should have enough range to reach targets from there without air to air refueling.
The problem is the US can't just go bombing other countries at will, as silly as it sounds. Congress must either declare war to Libya and give to the nobel peace winner authorization to go alone or the US must be part of a international "peace by force" operation.
Neither is possible at the moment as it is a legitimate *internal* struggle and both sides are within "acceptable" violence levels. The show will go on, and may continue for a long time...
You have got to be kidding! Congress declare War???? LMFAO Yeah, the only thing that Congress will declare is a go for a Presidential Executive Order. Constitution - It's just a fucking piece of paper. W.
Do you *want* it to be just a piece of paper?
If you act like it is over, then it is over, but it is also your fault.
[this is not rhetorical; it is a living, practical question/answer]
We may just need a new piece of paper, and everything that comes along with it.
Just illustrating the options , I am for the most part agnostic on the affair.
As an Amerikan, I don't want them doing anything in that country. I want them to leave those people alone and get the hell out of there.
This really isn't about tactical decisions. The question is who intervenes and when, or not. This may be score one for the dictator.
The closest carrier would probably be the Charles de Gaulle. It seems unlikely that land-based jets could enforce a no-fly zone beyond the coastal regions. It would probably take a couple super carriers to put a dent in Libya's interior.
I suspect the whole no fly zone talk is just a bluff unless we start to see NATO carriers leave port.
Call out the Warthogs!
Isn't Hillary already on it?
she is the warthog
Maybe the brave, honorable French will send the Goumiers in:

All ships should stand down and return home. This is insane. What is bad about it, is there are many useful idiot volunteers that do whatever they want them to and for any excuse..........fools..........
Yes. By all means send in the Clone Army. Clone Air Force and Clone Navy. Maybe they can call it "Operation Libya Freedom." That has a ring of sincerity. What did Heir Kissinger say a few weeks ago concerning Egypt something like "This is just the first act in the first scene...” and Kissinger is still administrating the US military through the current WH puppet for the Globalists. (Just like he did with the Little Bush puppet.) I guess this Libya nonsense is the second act of the unfolding scripted drama. The big boys are going to shut down the ME oil fields. We are all just props in their vicious theater creating Artificial Scarcity.
It's too bad the double standard regarding intl. law keeps going. Obama and others are talking about holding Gaddafi responsible for war crimes. But, not once does anyone talk about the war criminals in their own countries.
If govt. funding runs out, how will he pay for this new invasion? It would be slightly embarassing to commit troops, but then you can't pay them. Obama could try to hide money in a supplemental bill (instead of the regular budget). Congress could march in lockstep and say we must protect our troops in harm's way. It doesn't matter that it's illegal under intl. law. It also doesn't matter that it's a huge double standard. All that matters are soundbites and winning in 2012.
War crimes are only for officially sanctioned bogeymen and third world dictators who have outlived their usefulness, or bite the hand that feeds them.
LHD3 can't enforce a no-fly; they simply lack sufficient air power.
Call me a cynic, but France has been interested for some time in getting combat experience for their forces and this would appear to be an ideal situation for them to pitch CDG into. France was desirous of going into Iraq with us except they got snubbed by Busch.
When you have a CVN like CDG, you're eager to use it. They steamed all the way to the Indian Ocean just to get in some sorties in Afghanistan. Libya leaves them closer to port and there are much more opportunities to turn & burn in this theater, maybe even some actual air to air kills. A chance to shake out the Rafale's kinks and further the whole "joint ops" thing that they did landing on the Stennis (and vice versa).
