USPS Stops Accepting Mail To Canada

Tyler Durden's picture

But before people scream bloody murder that the USPS finally went bankrupt (3 months ahead of schedule), the blame for this one actually lies with socialist Canada, where the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is continuing its strike, making deliveries of all sorts of unmarked boxes to incognito recipients quite problematic. As a result, "the U.S. Postal Service will suspend accepting mail destined to Canada -- effective Saturday, June 18, 2011, 11:59 p.m. CDT -- with the exception of Global Express Guaranteed shipments." Hopefully Americans trying to reach friends and neighbors in the far more solvent northern neighbor will be able to make do with email attachments for the indefinite future. "As a convenience to our customers and to minimize service disruptions, we arranged to accept mail destined for Canada as long as possible," said Giselle Valera, vice president, Global Business. "We will continue to closely monitor the strike situation, and once Canada Post resumes operations, the U.S. Postal Service will again begin accepting mail for Canada. We also will then resume processing any Canadian-destined mail currently held in our network." Next up: outbound mail to Europe halted indefinitely (except for shipments of secret Fed-originating cash of course), where we are stunned that the local socialist union of postmen still believe in showing up to work daily.

From the full release:

To avoid service disruptions or delays -- regardless of the duration
of the strike at Canada Post -- U.S. Postal Service customers can
continue to send letters and packages via the Postal Service's Global
Express Guaranteed (GXG) service. GXG is a premium, date-certain
international shipping option with international transportation and
delivery by FedEx Express. GXG is available online at www.usps.com and at thousands of participating retail locations throughout the United States.

Additional information and updates regarding acceptance and movement of international mail is available at www.usps.com/communications/news/serviceupdates.htm.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating
expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to
fund its operations.

Tyler made the comment as it relates to the Postal Union strike ... I guess only the rich have a right to lobbying.

Or maybe, the NFL is socialist too?!?

Whatever!

And once and for all ... taxes go well beyond income ... as do loopholes and rules that allow the Oligarchy to 'legally' evade

What is your effective tax rate?

In Ontario the Effective Marginal Tax Rate for the average worker earning 47k is 31%; top earners (>200k) have an EMTR of 46%

Sales tax is 13% on alomst everything, capital gains are taxed as imcome at a 50% discount and unemployment is standing at 8.1%. There is also a Tax Free Savings Account where capital gains and any income on investments held within it are taxed at 0%

I pay a 44% marginal tax rate here in Saskatchewan.  It kicks in at 85K I think.  I'll be retiring in 5 months at 50 since investment income pushes all employment income into this tax bracket and I'm tired of paying 6 figures in tax while experiencing the joys of minus 40 every winter.  Scottsdales population will increase by one.

I live in Somalia and it's absolutely gorgeous here. If anyone is really serious about their libertarianism, Somalia is the place to go.

We've got virtually no government, no taxes, no central planning - basically just a gigantic vacuum of power in which fully armed "gangs" fight for domination and control.

Of course, there is always the constant threat that my family will be robbed, raped and killed, but that's a minor concession that I eagerly accept, knowing that the silver inventory at the Comex is not my problem anymore.  Besides, I've got enough ammo hidden in my backyard to blow the moon out of orbit.  Try and steal my ham and see what happens, bitches.

.....  all that, and I haven't even mentioned the weather yet.  Just lovely.....

Highly amusing that the two dimwits above immediately respond with ad hominem. Unable to attack your ideas, they attack you without even mentioning your cleverly crafted argument.

When confronted with new ideas, they either reject or accept them based on their preexisting worldview. Ideas which do not fit this narrow worldview are rejected immediately, without the slighest bit of contemplation. Pathetic. Cheeky Bastard would agree, and dimwits like them are why he has left this board. Despicable.

They are perfect examples of why democracy does not work. They have proven you correct without even realizing it. The irony, it's delicious.

No I haven't.  Please feel free to copy/paste the "same argument" if you want to prove me wrong. You're just pathetically redirecting your anger to make it appear like you're angry at the "repetition" of my post, not the content.

Somalia is the purest form of libertarianism, so I figured all the anti-government fanatics would be excited to know where they can live their survival-of-the-fittest, anarcho-capitalism, anti-government, anti-regulation dreams.

You NEED the control of government, you WANT the control of government whether you recognize it or not. Human ignorance and raw human behavior are far more evil than the incompetency of unjust government forces.

Your refusal to debate this and revert to insults is a testament to the failure of giving everyone an equal voice.

thefatasswilly's picture

You really wish to insult my reading comprehension, imbecile?

Yes, I see that you imply that he has posted this "worthless shit" elsewhere. However, you also call him an "asshole," which is what I am referring to.

No where in your one line response do you address the issue he brought up. You simply dismiss his contrarian viewpoint immediately, without even thinking about it. It was automatic.

Yes, it may be slightly off topic, and if he has posted it elsewhere, I have not seen it. However, repetition and tangents do not warrant the terms "worthless shit, asshole" as you claim they do.

Take your own advice. Read a book about something you do not agree with. It would help your miniscule mind immensely, but I know you will not, because you are one of those dimwits Cheeky Bastard (and now, I) despise so much.

Above, he has already mentioned the merit that I see. Overly oppressive government is undesirable (except for those at the top), of course, but lack of government is more than likely undesirable, too, and probably impossible anyway.

In any case, you are worthless. You have brought no arguments or ideas to the table, nor will you do so in the future. I must, again, tell you to shut the fuck up.

Nobody ever said anything about not having a form of gov't. You guys just assume things and run with it (like libertarian views), taking it to the extreme all the time. That is why I called it "worthless shit".

RNR is great at editing out old comments, you ought to know that by now, unless you are just completely ignorant and blind.

Please get over yourself. And quit bringing Cheeky into this as he has said nothing about it, you ass kissing wannabee.

Thanks.  I spent some time in Elko Nevada previously and found it most agreeable and spent a number of years in the Australian outback which was too hot come summer.  I can drop down to a 15% flat tax bracket here in Canada with some sleight of hand and this appears to be to way to go.  I was offered a job in Tempe earlier today but I can't figure out how you can bring a guy like me down there with unemployment the way it is.  Seems immoral if you ask me.

15% would be hard to beat. The tax rates in 2013 here on investment income/interest/dividend income will be brutal. Cap gains not as bad but higher than those "evil" Bush tax cuts.   Our corp tax rates are pretty bad unless you are an approved politburo oligarchy like General Electric.

Weird about Tempe.  Phoenix has a lot of defense companies - that is why they keep that democrat McCain in office.  Tempe, Phoenix, Scottsdale sort of run together.  I have not been to N AZ but heard it is very pretty.  N. NM is nice like S Colorado. Cold in the winter around Christmas but probably sweater weather for you. ;-)  Best of luck.

I wish I spoke Swedish.  The Swedes are making more sense these days are far less socialist.  Western Canada (not the one Vancouver is in - BC?) could be Switzerland or Saudi Arabia with the wealth.

I have about 34% deducted at source, then there's sales tax 13%, and add to that the fact that just about everything is 20-40% more expensive in Canada than in states and you suddenly see that it's not as bad in USA as people complain. Well, this is the fine way for our US Post Office to assure delivery of mail by forcing Americans to ship by very expensive and only one means.

I have a feeling there will be quite the migration across border to the Canadian Post by car to ship a letter, card or whatever for the day for those in the Border Statews.

As far as our Post Office is concerned, we are preparing for the eventual failure of the entire system and the loss of junk mail that will not be missed at all.

Yep, that's 3 tons of gold ONLY for a gold rich country like Canada. Fits in Harper's desk, and in not so long, he might just do that!

Like I said: "supply and demand". Supply is limited because little finance is available for new developments, while demand has increased (particularly at the top end) because of economic migration and offshore investment from China and the US to all those places I mentioned (plus a few others).

Those markets that bubbled solely because of the ninja ponzi (US, UK, Ireland) have already crashed. Those that have natural resources and other advantages are unlikely to fall very far, if at all. We'll see which of us has bought "it" hook, line and sinker, in time. Place your bets.

Huge oversupply of homes here in Canada. Buyers not so much. Consumer debt overhang worse than their US counterparts.

Might not be a classic "ponzi" but credit and borrowing has been stretched to the limit by any historical comparison. Foreclosures are rising, and prices are falling. Those are the facts.

And try getting some info on your migration numbers. I haven't seen anyone come up with any firm and reliable figures on that issue at all.

Thank you for that post. I ordered something from the U.S. in 2004, the cost for the item was 80$. The person told me it would cost 25$ for shipping via "Brown". Once the Item arrived, the UPS driver told me I owed him another 60$ in fees. I had to pay otherwise I wouldn't get the item. The total cost of the item was now 165$. I had been waiting for that flashlight for quite some time, so I paid.

Never again will I deal with criminals, whether they are a recognized corporation or not from the U.S. Before I made some friends from the U.S. (in the last couple of years) I believed everyone from the U.S. was a greedy bastard just out to get money. I now hold a different opinion. If you run a small business and ship to Canada, don't ask yourself why Canadians won't deal with "Brown". (I don't swear often here, but I do so for emphasis) That is because they are FUCKING CROOKS! That is why Canadians don't want to deal with Brown.

I run a business here in Ontario and do send packages frequently to the U.S. but lately not by Canada Post.  This should be all over by next week as our illustrious and yes on the road to insolvency government will introduce back to work legislation on those postal posties.

By the way Tyler if I'm not mistaken the province of Ontario has more debt per person than that most indebted state of California.  Our socialized healthcare with it's dependent and aging population base has effectively and will effectively kill our economy in no time flat.  And since most of our exports head due south over the border as that supply chain weakens and cracks we'll join ya in the sewer.  We have the highest debt to income ratio of all the G8 nations and an awesome housing bubble to boot.  Were just a step behind ya on the money printing front.

BC, Alberta and the Yukon could team up to make a epically wealthy country with insane GDP per capita. But it's not very Canadian to ditch the stragglers.

That said, Harper is moving full steam towards Americanization, which no demographic but the religous and recent immigrants seem to like. Bullish for Western separatism.

Canada's other biggie is water.  It is more improtant than people realize.  The most fresh water in the world.  I know the US tried to get a pipeline to the SW and CA said "fugget about it."   CA is very protective of their water.

Fresh water is a big deal.  I am not sure how you monetize that outside of N America.  Huge water tankers to China??

No worries.  It's the "per capita" thing that skews matters.  If the Yukon included the wolves, moose and bear in the population they would pale on metrics.  Then again this would attract higher transfer payments from the feds.  Anything north of 60 suffers from lack of roads/rail etc. Real tough country to work in.  Spent 9 years in that neck of the woods.  Not one day further.

TEOTWAWKI lesson.

Even if you have a moderately high end sports car racing tuned you cannot outrun MZB ( mutant zombie bikers).

The guy I raced thru an old mountain highway was probably better than average, but he easily kept up with me and i was screaming 80 thru some hard turns. The rest of his group couldnt keep up or msybe didnt want to race.

My skid alarm was blinking at me too. I pushed it as hard as I could without racing slicks.

If you see MZB you will have to fight, bottom line.

This was a matter of great philosophical debate when I was playing Car Wars back in the early '90s.  Were armed biker gangs a realistic threat.  My though always was a definite NO.  Motorcycles can't be armored effectively, they react poorly to being bumped by other vehicles, any weapons fire is likely to break something important, it is nearly imposible for the driver to effectively fire a hand weapon (and a passenger would have limited ability to shoot also), furthermore a mounted weapon is going to be difficult to bring to bear, and if it is of any power the recoil is going to be problematic, and the number of bikes it takes to haul around 8 guys is going to probably be the same as a 4x4 Toyota "technical", with the advantage that a "technical" could and has mounted serious heavy weapons.  The only useful paradigm for armed biker gangs would be to act as mounted infantry, using the motorcycles to get in and out fast, but not fight from them.

Wait, what was the article we're commenting to about?!?!?

Fri, 06/17/2011 - 18:14 | 1378910 blunderdog

The bike advantage is that it can go places 4-wheel vehicles cannot.  Bike-teams could arrange ambushes and traps that would disable cars/trucks, but combat at high-speed doesn't really make much sense for anyone involved.

If they're close enough to have a good chance of shooting out a tire, you should be able to hit them with your vehicle.  No one's going to be firing rifles from a motorcycle.  The far better bet would be for someone to get in front of you and drop caltrops or something.

(Shooting out tires tends to look easier than it is.)

I work with some marksman at my unit, and I asked them the question. Would it be possible for a guy on a motorcycle to hit a precise target with a hand gun and get accurate result (ie blow a tire, or hit somone inside). The man who answered me is a bald headed retired warrant officer named Bill (one of Canada's top mark'sman). His answer was basicaly, very unlikely, and unless much practice was done riding a motocycle at 75 miles per hour and firing thousands of rounds of ammo to get good at it. I doubt Bikers have that kind of experience of marksmanship.

I call bullshit on anyone telling me they can fire their hand gun from motorcycle and say they shoot tires off. A small caliber has no recoil, but would not pierce a tire rotating at high rate of revolution, a bigger hand gun has recoil, and would most likely destabilize the rider at high speed.
