USS Carrier Harry Truman Now Officially Just Off Iran, As Israel Allegedly Plotting An Imminent Tehran Raid

Tyler Durden's picture

As we first reported last week, in an article that was met with much original skepticism, the Pentagon has now confirmed that a fleet of 12 warships has passed the Suez Canal, and is now likely awaiting orders to support the escalation in the Persian Gulf. The attached image from Stratfor shows the latest positioning of US aircraft carrier groups as of June 23: the USS Harry Truman (CVN-75) is now right next to USS Eisenhower (CVN 69), both of which are waiting patiently just off Iran.

Report republished with permission of STRATFOR

As for the catalyst the two carriers may be anticipating, we provide the following update from the Gulf Daily News where we read that Israel may be on the verge of an attack of Iran, with an incursion originating from military bases in Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Israel is massing warplanes in the Caucasus for an attack on Iran, it was revealed yesterday.

Preparations are underway to launch the military attack from Azerbaijan and Georgia, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, quoting military sources.

Israel was, in fact, training pilots in Turkey to launch the strike and was smuggling planes into Georgia using Turkish airspace, they said.

However, Turkey was unaware of Israel's intention of transferring the planes to Georgia, the sources said.

The unexpected crisis between Israel and Turkey following an Israeli commando raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza Strip hit Israeli calculations.

Azerbaijan-based intelligence units, working under the cover of technicians, trainers and consultants, have helped with the preparations, the sources said.

Military equipment, mostly supplied by the US, was transported to a Georgian port via the Black Sea.

Georgian coastguard and Israeli controllers are co-operating to hide the operations from Russian vessels, said the sources.

They point out that according to Israel, it will not be in a position to launch a strike on Iran without using bases in Georgia and Azerbaijan due to the limited capabilities of its nuclear submarines stationed near the Iranian coast.

Meanwhile, Iran's Press TV reported that a very large contingent of US ground forces had massed in Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border. The independent Azerbaijani news website Trend confirmed the report.

Those reports came just days after the Pentagon confirmed that an unusually large fleet of US warships had indeed passed through Egypt's Suez Canal en route to the Gulf. At least one Israeli warship reportedly joined the American armada.

Press TV also quoted Iranian Revolultionary Guard Brigadier General Mehdi Moini as saying that the country's forces are mobilised and ready to face Israelli and American "misadventures" near its borders.

* Iran last night said it has cancelled plans to send an aid ship to the Gaza Strip as Israel "had sent a letter to the UN saying that the presence of Iranian and Lebanese ships in the Gaza area will be considered a declaration of war on that regime and it will confront it," Irna said.

We caution readers to take this news with a grain of salt as the Gulf Daily News' sister publication, Akhbar Al Khaleej, has a slightly less than stellar credibility rating. Then again, this is what some, Breaking News Online most notably, said about last week's carrier news, urging readers to ignore it.

This would be very interesting except that Trend News, which I monitor, absolutely positively did not "confirm the report".  Not by any stretch of the imagination!

Sort of calls into question the entire story... Frankly the Iranian news media is even less credible than the U.S. news media.

Certainly, there is the chance that this is not an accurate story.  Maybe some futures traders wanted to goose returns on oil contracts.  Perhaps an honest misread of news/events.  Who knows.

However, if an attack is imminent, this is precisely the type of cat and mouse games that you play ahead of the start to wear out your opponent.  Sort of a Peter and the wolf variant, hoping that after a number of false alarms, you opponent loses their edge and misreads real danger as another false alarm.

Time will tell.  And of course, perception sometimes doubles as reality in the markets.

Fair enough, but the word eradication sounds like you are freeing your crops from locusts.  Iran may not be better than any other Nation, but the people there are still people like you and me, and we must have empathy and not kill them!  And Chumba is right, we go to war, kiss the doelarr goodbye.  It could actually be a little funny.  The huge tanks push to the edge of Iran, the gas light hits red, and they ask themselves whats wrong.  Explaining FIAT could take weeks, so I hope they brought fire wood and banjos so they can sing themselves to sleep with koombeyeyah.

If you are referring to the fact that the Hebrews, who descended on the valley of a new land which was worshiped by "Sun worshipers" (RA) and "Lunar worshipers" (Isis) and they themselves were at that point "Saturn worshipers" (EL), and conjoined their worships with those around them (which was nothing new considering they were from Egypt which up until Akhenaten had itself many gods to worship) then yes, they worship many gods.  This until the new testament was writ, confusing the whole issue.

Actually, the old testament is pretty chalked full of "other gods" that the Hebrews worshiped.  The golden calf, libations to the moon, cakes set out for the moon goddess, burning children... its a pretty long list really.  You could actually call it a major miracle that the hebrews actually kept one religion through the whole time, as much as they dabbled in other religions.

Race is the sum of humanity.

The premise I don't understand is who gets to say what country has the right to own nuclear weapons? As far as I am concerned, the US doesn't deserve to own them either - considering they are the only nation to have used them on civilians (WWII). Let them speak for themselves:

Israeli poll: 75 percent favour deporting fellow citizens; Netanyahu favours birth control

A survey conducted by the Israeli Knesset channel shows that 75 percent of Israeli Jews are in favour of deporting Israeli-Arab citizens...

In an effort to boost his popularity ratings while those of his political rivals tumble, Netanyahu has launched a media campaign to convince Israelis of his important role in reducing the birth rate among Israeli-Arabs.

http://www.middleeastmonitor.org.uk/articles/arab-media/671-israeli-poll-75-percent-favour-deporting-fellow-citizens-netanyahu-favours-birth-control

'50% against equal rights for Arabs'

Fifty percent of Jewish Israeli high-schoolers believe that Arab Israelis should not be granted the same rights as their Jewish counterparts, according to a new Ma’agar Mohot poll of 536 15-to-18-year-olds.

http://www.jpost.com/Israel/Article.aspx?id=170735

41% of Israel's Jews favour segregation

A poll of attitudes among Israel's Jews towards their country's Arab citizens has exposed widespread racism, with large numbers favouring segregation and policies to encourage Arabs to leave the country.

The poll found that more than two-thirds of Jews would refuse to live in the same building as an Arab. Nearly half would not allow an Arab in their home and 41% want segregation of entertainment facilities.

It quite literally means the end of the U.S. as we know it.

Economic collapse is probable, of course, but more likely is the final elimination of any moral standing America has in the world.  There won’t be a fraction of difference in the world’s perception between Israel and the U.S. regardless of who pulls the trigger or who responds to Iran’s counter attack. For too long, Americans have avoided facing the reality of its Israel problem.  It should be settled right now, here in America, and not by warships in the Persian Gulf.  The writing-on-the-bathroom-wall talk here, of course, distracts us from dealing with the real threat.

The United States began training insurgents in, and directing propaganda broadcasts into Afghanistan from Pakistan in 1978. Then, in early 1979, U.S. foreign service officers began meeting insurgent leaders to determine their needs. According to the then US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, CIA aid to the insurgents (Osama Bin Laden) within Afghanistan was approved in July 1979, six months before the Soviet Invasion.

Seriously?

Iran exports 2.5 MBD of crude.  Take that off the market, and another 2-5 for regional dispruptions, and you're down almost 10%.  Overnight.  And we're already past peak production.

Price goes to 200 before the .gov takes over all distribution.

Gas is 10-15 bucks a gallon.  If you can get it.

Ship sank.  Fifteen people in a lifeboat designed to hold only ten.  It is sinking.  All will perish unless you throw five overboard.  What a cruel person he is, who cares nothing for humanity, who stands up and decides which five people will be thrown overboard to save the other ten.

Management is the allocation of scare resources among competing objectives.  The resources are scarce.  "Scarce" means some people won't get them.  The "strongest" managers don't make the resources scarce.  They just win the "right" to allocate them; they decide who gets the scarce resources and who doesn't.  They cannot allocate them to everybody (they are scarce, remember), and so the managers determine who doesn't get the scarce resources.  It has always been this way and always will be.

If you don't like who is currently allocating the scarce resource, get strong enough to overthrow the current "managers".  Oops - game over.  Once you become strong enough to allocate the scarce resources, you can keep yourself strong and everybody else weak.

It isn't right.  It isn't wrong.  It just is.  Survival of the fittest - the first who is able to control the allocation of scarce resources.

That reply always made the most sense to me.  Except when you factor in the temperature of the ocean, the sharks, and the fact that the liferaft only has fresh water for ten people.

I was addressing Welligton's claim that "they" care nothing for humanity.  Sacrificing some to save others is part of the process of allocating scarce resources among competing objectives.  It does not always mean that the allocator cares nothing for humanity.

The premise that perpetual growth is unsustainable is incorrect. The universe is stable, ordered, benevolent and expansive even if the minds of many bear witness to the opposite fact. Scarcity is a mindset. All behaviour is a result of mindset and setting. Under the right circumstances an individual will automatically self-actualise their potential. The current GDP of the world is about $40 Trillion. At 3% growth rate from 2012 the total will be $120 Trillion by the middle of the century. Of course there are limits to the amount of liquidity that can be injected into the system. There must be some forms of regulation. Oversight is required. Money like people must obey certain constraints. I can prove all the above points empirically, anecdotally and scientifically. I have a vast amount of life experience and pure research to back up what I say. Happy to sit with any interested parties to present my claims. (BTW, I am already doing so...)

Some unlikely bedfellows. Is Obama's Israel bashing actually cover for American support/participation in an attack on Iran? Hard to believe anyone will have the balls to attempt to attack Iran given how far along their nuclear program is, how many sites there are, how well buried those sites are, and how powerful Iran's military is. Iran could be taken out, looking at a map, by a combined effort of the US launching from the east and west (Iraq and Afghanistan) and Russia from the north. I'd gladly give the Russians the oil if they would seize control of Iran's nuclear program and dismantle it. I don't think Israel has the military to move the needle on Iran.

You've got to be kidding.

Russia on the Straits of Hormuz with control of not just Iran's oil but everything coming out of the Middle East?

If that comes to pass, we'll be longing for the good ol' days of Ahmadinejad and The Ayatollahs.

Please bear in mind that "Energy Blackmail" is the key foreign policy tool Russia has used to regain power and influence in Europe. Also bear in mind that Russia is no more friendly to the West and a lot more unpredictable than was the old Soviet Union.

And as far as making the Middle East a nuclear-free area? You'd be putting the world's second-most-powerful nuclear power in a chokehold position.

Finally, bear in mind that Vladimir Putin's most admired heroes in Russian History are Stalin and Peter The Great - and he is slated to return as President once the Medvyedev intrerregnum is over.

Russia moving into Iran will turn out very, very badly for us ....
