The (Very Near) Future of Microsoft Windows Is Here, Now!

Reggie Middleton's picture

I have warned many a BoomBustBlog reader not to discount Microsoft in the mobile computing wars ().
Their recent tech, whether it be mobile OS, cloud-based or interface
related is impressive and represent clean starts and breaks from the
past hegemony.  May I introduce the future of Microsoft Windows?

If you think that is a little far fetched, it is currently running on a Microsoft OS at MIT using the Xbox Kinnect interface. MIT’s
brain labs cobbled together the hand detection system that has been
pretty much fantasy up until now, and has used Microsoft’s Kinect
accessory for the Xbox 360 to do it. The clip below illustrates a
demonstration using a makeshift picture-scrolling UI.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is the only game console increasing sales growth
rate this season, and there is little wonder why. From a technical,
applied, innovation and user experience perspective, it literally
obliterates the competition (Sony’s Playstation and Nintendo’s Wii) and
is obviously the future of gaming. This is all run on 6 year old
hardware, at that! For those wondering how this is related to mobile
tech, just think of how many times people have complained about having
to little real estate on their smart phone screens…. There Is Another Paradigm Shift Coming in Technology and Media: Apple, Microsoft and Google Know its Winner Takes All

tamboo,

Try Windows 7, which has less security holes than almost all versions of Linux and Mac's OS X. (That info from the CTO of McAfee at a SANS security conference). The only Linux version stronger than MS Windows 7 is Mandriva (formerly Mandrake).

Microsoft has come light years in the security department in a very short time. And Windows 7 is a very nice OS.

I have a two-year in Unix Administration and have been in IT/IT Audit for 13 years. I'm not a fanboi but this is a more objective analysis of the current landscape.

"Less security holes than almost all versions of Linux and OS X" ?!

That has to be the most ignorant, misinformed, marketing-spun bullshit I've ever heard. No wonder engineers hate IT monkeys.

Love,
a kernel dev.

P.S. An OS is only as secure as its Userland. Head to head, a SELinux hardened kernel with the associated jails and policies is better than any Windows install, past-present-future. The NSA doesn't fuck around.

Reggie - you are wading into waters full of Apple alligators and Linux piranhas.

XBOX 360 sales have spiked pre-holiday; but some people just don't like the Microsoft Manatee.

Stick to finance, Reggie. If you think their tech is impressive, you don't know tech. Or Microsoft.

Jeez Reggie.....Buy a Rolls from MS and 12 months down the line find you've bought a tractor. MS can't even get 6.5 to gel with it's own operating systems. And anyone who bought that piece of shit can now fuck off as mobile 7 is not available as an upgrade. Gee, thanks Bill.

Regards.

6.x worked great for me and WP7 is a big upgrde and thus yes new and more powerful hardware is needed. Welcome to life as normal for computers and OS.

Maybe you'd prefer Tandy Deskmate or a Mac Lisa? So how is that Mac Lisa upgrade to MAC OSx going?

Look, this is normal J6P CE stuff. If you are hardcore then go Linux/Unix.

Their tech may be bleeding edge, but management, and execution is as piss poor as it gets.   Tell me how MS integrates?

Oh, they don't -- they pass that on to the end user to iron out the kinks, along with the most convoluted licensing too.  They love to shit on their customers, and have for two decades.

XBox and the red ring of death, always a winning combination.  Reggie, tell me of one other mfg that has had such systemic equipment failure...

Um yeah the Kinect is just so 21st century. I hope we soon see the MS Jetpack. But I fear the RROD may cause many needless, but cool, splatterd from a great height deaths.

yeah, um, XB360 does not in any way shape or form obliterate the competition

not sure that it will sell well. microsoft caters to a mentality of less than retarted baby chimps. looks more like a pi version of unix. ms is investing in the wrong direction.
