Video Of Chinese J-20 Stealth Fighter Leaked

Tyler Durden's picture

For all who have been awaiting the release of a video of China's Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter jet, which made its first flight on January 11 of this year, Youku has you covered. In a recently released clip, we can see the J-20 performing high speed taxiing tests at Huang Tian Ba airport, Chengdu. A quick summary of the characteristics of the J-20 can be found here. Of note is the rather loud exhaust noise coming from the "stealth" fighter. One would expect this to be modestly muffled in the final version. Regardless, at least China can now boast via "leaked" videos that it has both a stealth fighter and an aircraft carrier, ignore that both are probably nothing more than the epitome of reverse engineering.

And a video of the actual first test flight from early January can be seen below:

This time, we get to play the part of the Soviets, whose economic system would collapse from the strain.

Chinese have no illusion that they're learning, copying for the purpose of catching up and innovating. And it's been steadily bearing fruit. In the meanwhile, Americans continue being pleased with themselves in the wit of cracking lead-paint and wallmart jokes.

Was in the eastern part of the Shanghai in January at a new windmill powered substation and nearby (inland mind you) was about a 1/2 scale mock up of what looked like a US carrier. Took a couple of "stealth" pics while passing by in the taxi. As soon as someone can tell me how to add a jpg, I'll post it.

Spielberg could really reach moments of inspiration when he put his mind to it - there was somehow no false sentimentalism that characterises some of his other works.

Aerodynamic ratios and payload capacity show that this is nothing more than a glorified stealth aircraft carrier killer.  Not even in the same category as the F-22 or F-35.  Its more like the old YF-23 prototype.

Large payload capabilities mean it could carry quite a few anti-ship missiles, evade any F/A-18 Super Hornets that fly CAP and be home before the ramen gets cold.

People around here tend to think that their own country is stupid and on the brink.  Please wake up and realize that the US is so muc more powerful than anyone realizes.  There is a plan at work and we are actually much smarter than anyone gives us credit for and better positioned than you think.

There has been more than 20 years of high level development and trillions spent on projects that we have no hint of.  I believe in the mile down bunkers, I have seen "ufos" (they are not aliens), energy weapons are a reality, weather and earthquake weapons (three major eq occured while the x-37b was in space) and finally drones and robots.

When WW3 breakouts we will stop fighting with one arm tied behind our back... the gloves will come off and will give China and their clown friends a good spank.

Well, the world is much more dangerous than you might imagine.

I have a basic question for you:  do you really believe in the death of the USSR?

There is an operation... real operation called Golgatha.  The USSR fakes it death only to be ressurected when the West let it's guard down.

Ever heard of Day X... this is no joke my friend.  There are thousands of sleeper agents living in the US waiting to do their thing upon the proper signal.

No, we are not bankrupt.  How can a powerful government be bankrupt?  Only a normal or weak government can go bankrupt.

When we hear China complaining about our monetary practices it is just our enemy sending propaganda.

Now to be clear... the US does have very bad corruption problems, but it must manage everything with a bigger, strategic objective in mind.  Trying to balance the budget while you are gearing up for the mother of all wars is not very wise.

Why worry about debt when there is a good chance you or your creditor will go up in ashes in 10 years or so!

Abe Lincoln had it right.  We can worry our asses off about outside powers, but can only be defeated by ourselves.

We're doing ourselves in by printing dollars to oblivion, destroying the middle class, feeding the bankers and the top 1%, disassembling our manufacturing capabilities, sending jobs overseas, overstretching our military . . .

Just focus on the printing aspect.  When our dollars won't buy us what we need from the outside, and inflation impoverishes our people, our advanced hardware will be worth little.

It is truly upsetting to see such racism on Zero Hedge. While the Varyag is obviously not a domestic design, it was an unfinished Soviet carrier purchased from Ukraine, the J-20 is without doubt an indiginous project. Of course, some people are too blinded by yellow terror to even consider that the Chinese might be capable of developing their own technology and just assume everything is stolen.

Of note is the rather loud exhaust noise coming from the "stealth" fighter. One would expect this to be modestly muffled in the final version.

Big heavy airframe + unsculpted wings and smaller control surfaces (compared to F-22 that is) means less lift so it requires larger engine noise = more RPM, and more thrust, and more heat, and more radar signature, to stay aloft at lower speeds.

These issues also imply operating cruise height reduction, and some range reduction.

The splayed engine nozzles imply a slower roll rate than F-22 as the engines are further out from the rotation center and require more force to be turned.

The more rearward wing, in plan view, also implies a lower pitching rate.

Slower roll and slower pitching also implies a substantially less agile aircraft, than an F-22.

This is without even going into sustained engine power, where the F-22 will have a much larger static thrust with a much lower weight, and much greater fuel burn efficiency ... not to mention higher stealth and less heat generation. Which provides the ability to accelerate in a new direction, earlier, which is absolutely crucial for defeating missiles and breaking track and lock and escaping blast damage  ... which is what the advanced auto-pilot + advanced nimble sensors and all that CPU-grunt, and coding is for.

(if you didn't know the fifth generation were designed to survive AA missile attack .. even surprise ones ... the F-35 will take this to an even higher level, specifically because of the need to detect and defeat advanced battlefield SAM attack, from any direction, at any time ... and I seriously doubt this J-20 or any other Chinese fighter will have that capability any time soon ... and beyond intrinsic low observability, that is where the the 'winning-edge' is these days ... anything less and you're missile bait).

The 'glass cockpit' shots are of course staged and just propaganda props and probably total BS, and fairly certain to be nowhere remotely functional combat avionics systems.

This J-20 is an early prototype (like where F-22 was in about 1992) and a long way from a production variant ... if it ever becomes one ... that is.

Lots of aircraft don't make it that far, and there's a good chance a complete redesign of a new iteration is required, built and tested and refined, before the Chinese decide to produce them in volume.

Any production they initiate will be low rate production for years, so a LONG time before they become a significant force.

Bottom line;

Beijing wants to put Taiwan beyond regional dispute, hence a nascent carrier arm, and this J-20 prototype, to prepare for the eventual arrival of Japanese and Korean F-35s (in large numbers, to replace aging F-16 and F-15s) after about 2020.

It should be seen as such because it will take a long time for them to generate fully-operational heavy fighter squadrons in militarily significant numbers - think >>2025 to 2030 timeframe.

At which time a new replacement generation of western fighters will be taking shape on factory floors ... but this won't stop everyone panicing endlessly about the ne 'yellow peril' ... like ... all over again.

I think by now the Chinese realise that starting or participating in air warfare with the west would be an EXTREMELY bad idea ... but feel free to panick, anyway, if you imagine different.

>One would expect this to be modestly muffled in the final version<

Maybe, maybe not. The Chinese, like everybody else outside the of the US and very possibly UK, simply do not have the capability to make the ceramic materials required for the engine exhausts to be muffled properly.

It's the same with high end metallurgy...
