In Violation Of UN Resolution, Western "Boots" Are Now On The Libyan Ground

Tyler Durden's picture

In a TV slip caught by Al Jazeera, yet another Zero Hedge prediction has been confirmed: namely that it was only a matter of time before NATO "boots on the ground" would promptly replace the CIA's "sandals on the ground" in a fully Western-backed land invastion of Libya. Since it is too early to predict the nationality of the armed invaders, we will assume they are British as Al Jazeera speculates, because otherwise Congress is about to find itself in an unprecedented scandal for completely ignoring its duty to impose the War Powers Act, which in turn would mean that the President now has a unilateral right to enforce the invasion of any country he so chooses. We will leave the bitter implications of what this could mean, as America celebrates, and remembers the lives of so many who died for this once great country, to others.

From Al Jazeera:

And from The Guardian:

Armed westerners have been filmed on the front line with rebels near Misrata in the first apparent confirmation that foreign special forces are playing an active role in the Libyan conflict.

A group of six westerners are clearly visible in a report by al-Jazeera from Dafniya, described as the westernmost point of the rebel lines west of the town of Misrata. Five of them were armed and wearing sand-coloured clothes, peaked caps, and cotton Arab scarves.

The sixth, apparently the most senior of the group, was carrying no visible weapon and wore a pink, short-sleeve shirt. He may be an intelligence officer. The group is seen talking to rebels and then quickly leaving on being spotted by the television crew.

The footage emerged as South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, arrived in Tripoli in an attempt to broker a ceasefire. He described reports that he would ask Muammar Gaddafi to step down as "misleading", and said he would instead focus on humanitarian measures and ways to implement a plan concocted by the African Union for Libya make a transition to democratic rule but not seek Gaddafi's exile.

The westerners were seen by al-Jazeera on rebel lines late last week, days before British and French attack helicopters are due to join the Nato campaign. They are likely to be deployed on the outskirts of Misrata, from where pro-Gaddafi forces continue to shell rebel positions to the east.

There have been numerous reports in the British press that SAS soldiers are acting as spotters in Libya to help Nato warplanes target pro-Gaddafi forces. In March, six special forces soldiers and two MI6 officers were detained by rebel fighters when they landed on an abortive mission to meet rebel leaders in Benghazi, in an embarrassing episode for the SAS.

Once again, the west has overstepped its UN-granted powers in the pursuit of humanitarian extraction of crude oil.

The subject is sensitive as the UN security council resolution in March
authorising the use of force in Libya specifically excludes "a foreign
occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory
".

The situation, however, is about to come to a fore, after it was announced that Libyan rebels have now officially run out of crude oil, meaning that absent on the ground reinforcements, Gadaffi is about to win the civil war.

And while the UK and the other members of the security council could not care less, we somehow doubt that China and Russia will allow a full-blown land invasion of Libya pass without a veto and what appears to be the next diplomatic scandal.

h/t Steve

When Lincoln "disbanded" the Constitution to save the country, there were no blogs, no national newspapers, no radio, no TV.  He got away with it.  What he did was wrong, anti-Constitutional, debilitating to America.  He claimed/thought he saved the Union, yet here we are.  One man, thinking he had more intelligence and knowledge than elected representatives: senate and house.

Now, we have another jerk, supported by Wall Street, GS and the financial community. He justifies what he is doing by what Lincoln did, in his mind, I think.

This is not the 1860s. How does it all  end?

It's difficult to asses who they are and where they are from. They don't wear any uniforms and the weapons are difficult to identify. That being said, even if we can't pinpoint their origins, the type of weaponery they use, the equipement they carry and the cloths they wear are clues to their role, so we might speculate on what they are doing there and for who they are working for.

They carry light weaponery, cameras and wear inconspicuous cloths. They blend in quite nicely and appear to be sharing informations with the rebels so it's safe to assume they are either military intelligence or foreign intelligence. I would go for foreign intelligence since they have been on the ground for years now, they know the terrain and what the military needs. So maybe MI6 or DGSE.

The question now is: does a foreign intelligence mission on the ground constitute an invasion in regard to international law? Nobodies knows, as their is no clear definition of such a thing in international law.

Does it constitute a violation of the SC mandate? Maybe, but it can be argued that first: it is not a military operation, second that the allies are acting on implied mandate (meaning that they are doing intelligence missions to support the main mission (no fly zone) wich would be authorized on the rationale that every mandate supposes the authorization to use means necessary to complete that mandate fully, the same principle apply to international organizations when their charter doesn't specify the means they can use to carry their missions.)

Yep - the wording was agreed by the UN with the understanding that special forces could be used without breaking the resolution. Unfortunately ZH has gone for the sensationalist headline without giving much thought to what occupying forces really means. There may come a time when ZH is proved right and 30,000 US troops barge into Tripoli but it's way off base for the moment.

>.>

There was no resolution..... only propaganda to get the public onboard initially, and to not "literarily" break the charter. So, it was purely a technical and propaganda measure.... the actual practical "resolution" is simply "do whatever you want".

Obama is a corporate drone.  The owners of the country KNEW that they could manage this bitch.  This is why he was permitted to win the nomination.  Millions of people cried tears of joy, as a black man finally ascended to the throne.  The reality is that these men are mere figureheads and puppets.  This does not absolve Obama of his role.  However, the final decision to go to war is not his to make.  The owners make that deci$ion.

It's hard to call specific acts within a criminal system 'crimes'.  'Crime' is defined by those who invent the laws.  But I take your point.

He was installed to trigger the vicious racism among one subset of the masses - hence the White Supremacist flabby-fascists - and to mollify other ones - those who have born the brunt of the economic Depression, Black and Brown people.

He's a perfect divide and conquer candidate for the Rulers to use, which is why he'll win in 2012 going away (unless Petraeus is 'called' to run by Jesus and the Carlyle Group).

Mon, 05/30/2011 - 22:54 | 1324281 Hephasteus
Hephasteus's picture

It was me who said no way on that claim. It's not got an origianl source and it doesn't even make sense.

If they are using silver oxide batteries in it than a 15 kg number which is 480 ounces or what about 420 troy ounces. If you consider 12 kg of that is battery storage you are looking at 1500 plus watt hours of electricity. If it has a monster 50 watt radio and even triple redundant 100 watt cpu's that's enough battery to run them for 4 frikkin hours. I can see them trying for 2 hours run time but 4 hours is way too much overdesign.

Now if that is true then you could have electrical drain for control surface movement. In which case 400 or so troy usage could be reasonable as you'd need well over a kw/hour for a 20 sec max flight time.

I would definitely buy 40 or even 60 kg of silver in a torpedo because they have huge run times and water takes mega torque and also you have monsterous angle changes but the cruise missile is still a bit iffy as I'm sure their attitude adjustment needs and capabilities are very small never changing trajectory angles more than a few degrees or more than a few times during flight.

Then, so be it. You wish war, and blood, suffering and endless conflict until your masters are hung from rafters.

War. Without end, until the bankers bow to society. Until predators serve a higher good, not their own actions.  Without recourse to civility. Without recourse to the old memes of capital, religious ethics or decency. You have 5.5 billion humans living on $10 or less a day, who will not be taken under by Disney cartoons and sugared' drinks to make them happy. The 5.5 billion can be addressed, converted and brought into the fold without military force - but not by the pathetic and stupid methods you currently use.

India, and Africa, now function on mobile phones, not computers. We will access that, and discard your control mechanisms. And, newsflash - Hilary Clinton "We are in an information war and we are losing it". Bitch. You lost it when you took the Corporate control monies, and forgot liberty. Don't think that 4 billion people don't have access to your dirty little secrets now.

You people, you fucking people, have no idea of what you've entered into. Uplift would have been numinous - and cost effective. Instead, you wanted.. what? 50% of the population obese? 70% of the population so ignorant they don't believe in evolution? 90% so fucking ignorant they believe in the political system designed to propagate itself and nothing more?

Rule #1 - Empire is fine, if the citizens of the empire are the ultimate in homo sapiens evolution, at that point in time. If this holds, then everyone wants to be an empire citizen - worked for the Greeks, the Romans, the British and so on. Instead, you gave the world fat fucking retards. No-one respects that, and you lack the moral courage to purge them from your own empire. Instead, we have religious nutcakes, psychotic scientologists and fatties with low IQs.

Guess what?

War. Civilisations will revolt against low standards. Disaster Capitalism only works if the model you're selling is any good. It isn't. 90% of the world detests your Empire.

Welcome to the 21st Century.

Really stupid to run war games in a realm where geeks can take over aircraft carriers. Which are armed with nuclear cruise missiles. Or where you don't even know who writes the damn code. If you think that the average USA military code is better protected than Sony's network, then you're a fucking insane stupid bunny who needs boiling. Corporate secrets > military secrets because its their money at stake. Real money. Not pretend money printed by the Fed.

No I think the big story is low hanging fruit tactics are being used on the top of the tree fruit. Not a good sign. You may get a chance to kill a drug dealer soon.

If they send apaches in there at 20 million a pop operating from a 10 million a day boat trip the drug sales are going to go way up. The good news is apache is fly by wire so not much training costs. The bad news is apache is fly by wire.

It seems reasonable to try to use a shotgun on birds but that didn't work in iraq.

I'm sure that place isn't packed with hidden grad placements so what could go wrong.

Let's force it. It'll work.

It's not quite that bad. This rule only applies if the President is a progressive messiah.

"The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30 day withdrawal period, without an authorization of the use of military force or a declaration of war. The resolution was passed by two-thirds of Congress, overriding a presidential veto.

Despite the apparent non-ambiguity of its language, the War Powers Resolution has been regularly ignored by presidents of both parties, some even declaring their belief that the act is unconstitutional."

So if congress rises to impeach Obama, who's side will you be on?

Impeach. He's done the following and the list keeps growing:

1. violated the War Powers Act

2. In contempt of court for ignoring a Federal judges ruling (x2) to lift the Gulf moratorium

3. continued implementing Obamacare even though a Federal judge has voided the law, until reviewed by the SCOTUS

4. failed to enforce agregious civil rights law violations and has redefined civil rights as applicable to only blacks, no others get protections.

5. failed to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, signed under Clinton, and an absolute duty of the DOJ and the Federal government

6. Wilful failure to enforce our immigration laws and borders

7. gave 1500 automatic weapons to the Mexican drug cartels in a phony scam to discredit our own gun laws, one of them was used to kill one of our own border agents.

8. Very actively supported the unlawful marxist takeover attempt of our ally, Honduras, by Manuel Zelaya who is/was also being supported by Hugo Chavez.

9. unconstitutionally intervened in a private contract and he stole the GM bondholders stake and gave it to the UAW.

10. keeps an enemies list and ran a snitch site out of the White House computer, which is/was against the law.

11. allegiance with and an ongoing open door policy with MB and CAIR, which are unindicted co-conspirators to terrorism. So, he's probably a traitor too... depose him at the impeachment

There's more, that's just off the top of my head for now..... Impeach the bastard already, he's just getting started.

So in other words, hecontinued the GW Bush atrocities. Bush said that any president who knew what he knew would do the same thing. I guess even Mr. 80 IQ can be right once in a while. Bush, not Saddam, should have been hanged. Obamastic has followed in his shoes in Libya to also become a war criminal. Both to the Hague. 90 percent of the terror in this world is caused by two countries, the US and psycho ruled Shiate Iran.

I've already wagered that they've been there for a long time. Advance teams of our special ops and/or the British SAS seeking to defend oil facilities, and helping with targeting and organization. They're always in there way before we ever say we are committed to a conflict.

Black Op Hilarity: A British SAS team and 2 diplomats were already well known to have been secretly dropped into Libya in the first week of the conflict to make contact and assist the rebels. But the confused rebels captured them instead. The rebels held them for several days because they didn't know what to do with them. Finally, the rebels just sent them back home on a slow boat (literally) to Britain in disgrace.

Apparently, the ditzy rebels were a few dates short of a palm tree. After they confirmed the SAS team was on the level, and spared their heads, they still concluded that things were going so well against Ghadafi that they would continue on their own and didn't need any help from infidels.

True story.

It's so funny that the US and western world is going against UN resolution and lying about it.  The rebels don't want to fight, they want to take over after US and other forces have attacked and cleaned up the situation.

Read the posts, disseminated the info, and am here to clarify. For anyone who thinks the "boots on the ground" is a new phenomenom, let me lift that fog of cluelessness from your skull. if you think the US, or the "powers that be", ie., NWO/War Machine/Banking Cabal, etc., etc., HAVE NOT been in every conflict/rebellion since the invention of the combustion engine, then you need to move on about now. "THEY" have had their bloody hands in every part of the world, think- every country in South America, Africa, South East Asia. All for the most precious commodity in history, OIL. "THEY" have been given a way in since the Algerian "incident", and now know that they can disrupt/overthrow/exterminate each and every oliarch/monarch/psychopathic leader in the ME to get that OIL. Boots On The Ground is a 24/7 occurrence. The problem is distracting the sheeple from the truth. The other BIG problem is getting control of that OIL before China steps in, and that's where the proverbial shit really hits the fan. China is buying up the most valuable mineral rights, etc., around the world at a very fast pace. (I might add, it's OUR money their using). What they overlooked is that the rest of the "world" is owned by the Cabal, and "THEY" are only interested in gaining control, one war or another, that OIL. Now we can parlay that  "liberation" bullshit all night, we can discuss financial dysfunction until next Memorial Day, or we can see that whoever dies with the most OIL, wins! Don't know how, when, or where my gold and silver will come into play in the fast approaching collision, but I'm hopefully better off with IT, than without. I guess I can use an oft said phrase here, "prepare accordingly. Have a great one guys......

After the so-called 'liberation' of Libya the Libians will learn how it is to live under the Satanic black boots of the criminal western banking system.

They will learn what it feels like to be squeezed into poverty and submission and their earthy richdoms stolen by the New World Order.

These so-called rebels are just chumps of the New World order and nobody will care about them after this is over.

But ... but ... it's all in a good cause people! ... just relax ... they simply needed to pulverize the critical infrastructure of the country first ... just think of it as piece-preparations ... and it's for its own good ... you know this makes sense ...

Like I said about 2 months ago, the Libyans could have handled this much better, if left to do so. But because we encouraged them to take up arms, and intimated military 'protection' and cover for them, all we have done is to assist them to turn a going-concern of a country into wreckage, and even greater and longer-lasting poverty and deprivation, and refugees.

The road to hell is paved with good intents.

I don't mind if the Libyans want to do that, to themselves, but I don't like it when we are doing it for them, and wasting a fortune doing it, and then >WE< nominate who the new titular government of this new 'state' is, and must be - for them to access money and loans and provisioning.

Can you say puppet?

I sort of remember Washington and NATO did that with the current corrupt election-stealing drug-dealing treacherous super-crook 'President' of Afghanistan a decade ago ... and look how well that went ... just today Australia lost 2 soldiers, a Lieutenant combat-‘mentor’ who was shot by one of his trainees, plus a Chinook that crashed killing a pilot (don’t know if it was shot down … but I doubt that would ever be admitted).

And when we all do finally leave, if we ever do leave, the 'ekonomy' in Kabul will almost cease to be overnight, and then it will revert to what the land, and its potential, can actually be, and generate, and want – yet again.

You can bet this conflict in Libya will spiral on for years, due to all this 'assistance' and ‘protection’ and care and humanity … blah blah

Like I said, I don't mind if the Libyans want to go it to themselves, by themselves, with their own weapons and resources and with their own reasons, that is their right.

Just like it is the right of Burma or DPRK to do so ... but we don’t butt in there when the Monks rebel ... but the only reason why this has escalated to the monstrosity of civil war that it has is because the US and its shanks offered political and military support to a minority of rebels, who rejected any form of compromise.

We should have told them to grow up and get a clue right then ... but NATO wanted this to spiral into this conflict ... NATO could have prevented it, but France had been told to make sure it happens.

I fail to see what NATO are doing in there, unless this is simply another piece of a wider plan to revive African imperial colonialism and exploitation, under the ruse of freeing the people, and boosting their affluence etc. (which of course, it won't).

As I see it, what NATO are doing is the thin-end of a multi-decade wedge of conquest - well outside NATO TERRITORY. They EU is broke, they can't go East, or North, or West ... they can only go South wards to subjugate new markets and resources and support their dying klepto-corporate +debt-money 'way of life'.

To try and save the rotting corpse of the EU 'dream' and mythos.

If I were Russia I'd be drawing some lines in the sand. … oh that's right ... they are … and have been … for a few years.

This is how big wars get rolling ... extra-national expeditionary warfare … and it is Europe that is starting it … yet again … with the same 'financiers'.
