A Walk in the Woods – We Hate Goldman

Bruce Krasting's picture

Not too far from me is a park area called Teatown. It is about 850 acres
and has 15 miles of trails through forests and lakes. Most of the land
and a good chunk of the budget is donated by local supporters. During
the summer there are busloads of kids from the city that come to enjoy a
day in the woods. I go there once in a while to burn off some stress
and enjoy being alone in nature. I did that yesterday afternoon. I chose
a trail I have not been on in some years. Aptly called:

Parts of the trail are well traveled.

Other parts not.

Along the way you see the improvements that some individuals have made. For example, this walkway over a wetland.

A Mr. Oldenberg made this possible back in 1990.

A number of others who have appreciated this spot have made similar contributions.

On my walk I came to this “busy” intersection.

You can imagine (if you know me) my anger, shock and disappointment to see this at the trail juncture:

Apparently three years ago the nice folks at Goldie wrote a tax
deductable check and had some help bring in some wood chips for this
trail. Now they get a plaque with their name on it that will last
forever. Whatever improvements GS made back then have been washed away
from three hard winters. But Goldie still has their advertisement right
in the middle of the woods.

I was looking at this and taking a picture when a teenage couple came up
the path. I guessed that they were not this deep in the woods for
“sylvan” pleasures. I pointed to the sign and asked:

BK: Do you know who Goldman Sachs is?

BOY: They’re the ones who stole the money in the stock market.

GIRL: My father says it’s the Wall Street that caused the depression.

BK: That sounds about right.

BOY: Should we rip it out?

BK: No. Let’s leave it. Everyone who walks by this spot will be reminded of how much we don’t like these guys.

BOY: Okay. Which way you going?

I pointed left. They went right.

I have said many times that you can’t do GOOD and at the same time do WELL
on Wall Street. GS and its partners are doing very WELL. They attempt
to do some GOOD things in an effort to create a softer image and create a
tax deduction. It will not work. Teenagers and old cynics like me see
through it.

GS should take down the sign in the woods. It is having the exact
opposite reaction to what they intended. It reminds us that we don’t
like them. We know they are predators. And we know that predators, like
wolves, have a place in this world. But we don’t want these wolves in
our backyard.

If the deep thinkers at GS read this I hope they get the message. You’re
best advised to keep a low profile. Don’t rile us more. Keep you’re “We’re good guys” signs out of our sight. We know that is just crap.

Excuse the personal rant.

Perhaps some letters could have been blacked out so the sign would read:

add to that those obscene GE social program ads on TV.

sadly, i know a couple of business folks in town who are so powerful in their particular domains, that they can be brazen asses/hypocrits and "there ain't a thing anyone can do" to negatively impact their general context.

Well put.

On a long weekend, if a Goldman fell in the canyons of Wall Street, would anyone hear?

That would depend upon the amplitude of the splat.

I'll be listening.

Does not legend have it that in Transylvania's good old days for benefit of underpriviliged children, those suspected as being truly evil fuckers were hung upside down in the town square, copper catheters inserted in their wrists and much to the cheers and celebration of the unruly crowds, allowed to bleed out until thought to be virtually dead?  Didn't the ruling class in order continue deflecting criticism from itself and sensing the wondrous approval of the angry mob, so as not to besmirch, disappoint or deprive the the same tax-burdened populace of the land, during the ensuing week nurture the accused back to health on a steady diet of filthy water, cockroach chitin and human waste so as to again be enjoyed as community spectacle during the long succeeding summer holiday weekends?

I wonder if they laid brass plaques for thier continued civic participation?

People like the ""winners" at Goldman, are too often so full of "the game" that they never, never, never understand when they are being obnoxious.

By the way, does anyone know where former Eagle Scout, Hank Paulson, is hanging out these days?

I wish someone would really "name names" . I'm still a novice regarding the details of the people behind the scenes. I only know about ROBERT RUBIN & HANK PAULSON. Who really is responsible for looting of this country & when are WE going to exact justice for the American People ? Oh, I forgot LARRY SUMMERS ! (did he ever work for GOLDMAN SACHS ? ..... don't junk me ! I'm uneducated in this regard.

Junks are a badge of honor when done by the wrong people in my view...they can't make a cogent case for their belief system, so they junk from behind anonymity...poor baby's...LOL.

Your an honorable person by stepping out. You and I may agree on everything or nothing but you've shown me character of soul.

Peace my brother.

Except, it kind of misdirects one's attention from the culprits, much like those standard canned lines:

"It was coincidence."

"Unintended consequences."

"Nobody could have foreseen it."

The problem is that it does indeed excuse the crooks involved, the Group of Thirty and JP Morgan who pushed mightily for the repeal of Glass-Steagall and the removal of legal risk so none of the crooks would go to jail this time (approximately 1,000 banksters went to jail in the aftermath of the Savings & Loans meltdown in the '80s).

The Group of Thirty, the Bretton Woods Committee (which, interestingly enough, share the same EXACT business address and fax number), the Trilateral Commission, the Peterson Institute, and the Council on Foreign Relations always appear to be promoting the exact same agenda.

Usually have overlapping memberships, and enjoy unbridled influence on the American federal institutions, yet these organizations have international memberships.

And contain those people who have profited from these meltdowns.

Interesting.....very interesting.....

Yup, and Rahm was with the private equity firm of Wasserstein Peralla, as well as being the number one recipient of donations from hedge funds when he a member of the US Congress.

I saw this post earlier and really like it (I'm paraphrasing here from memory):

When the young President Obama entered the White House, we never expected him to say:

"Let the word go forth from this day on, a new generation has been born."

But we certainly never expected him to say:

"I have appointed Diana Farrell, the evil queen of jobs offshoring, to be my economics advisor."

WTF????

BTW, and this relates to the "We Hate Goldman" article by extension of other banksters.  I'm working on something about AB Krongard, former head of Alex. Brown & Sons who was magically metamorphosed to executive director of the CIA in 2001 after DB took over the investment bank.  Does anyone have some background on this?

Love it!

I would have torn it down, and tried to get a good price for it on Ebay :)

Anything that says "Improved by Goldman Sachs" is a collectors item :)

It's like... the Enron logo! I sure would have wanted that in my garden as that was my first big loss on the stock market.

your sentiment is understandable, however, the powerful banking elite at goldman would only laugh while you wiz away, and they pay themselves $20 ba ba billion in annual bonuses.

anger, shock and disappointment

well, lately i've been reading about a lot of anger, etc. about a certain mosque proposed near Ground Zero. personally, i support property rights, but that's me. but anyways, where is all the OUTRAGE that a bunch of financial terrorists built their new world headquarters (200 west street) DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM WORLD TRADE CENTER #1 ???

This becomes, then, a time in modern life when people think of these big Wall Street companies as major crime families.

In Godman we Trust.  For and by the Bankers of America.

It was Bush's buddy, Hank Paulson, (X-CEO), and Neel Kashkari, ( X-Vice President), both of Goldman Sachs who got their jobs at the treasury to manipulate public opinion so Goldman could be bailed out. All in 2008. They engineered the bailout structure through AIG, (also bankrupt),(also got 85 Billion), to give another 700 billion to all who lost money. Including foreign banks like LYG, RBS, UBS, BCS, HBC and many others.  Goldman was bankrupt. Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of GS when this happened got record pay bonuses for past performance when they needed bailed out. HUH. Bonuses for what. Another interesting factoid is that John Snow, (former executive of GS), left the Treasury so Hank could also bail out John Snow’s Chrysler Corp. Did Chrysler really need the money or was it just a hand out to old buddies. Goldman are squids sucking the life out of the lower middle class of America. Now Neel Kashkari, (let’s say Goldman), wants to Steal Social Security, they never quit legalized stealing from the poor of America. They do make those who earn less than 50k a year poorer, since most Americans do not even make that much. They are addicts. This bailout, was the biggest THEFT to taxpayers of this decade. I don’t think they can beat this, unless they do get away with stealing Social Security. What I can’t understand is why so many want to cover up this bailout, brush it aside, forward the blame to others, and change the topic. Are we, Americans, so short minded and forget so soon. I know the media brainwashes us, but Geezzzzz. Think of the facts here. Is Goldman the ultimate Vampire ?  I do know this, Obama said we want our money back. Well, when’s our payday. I want it all back. Shut down Goldman, No Problem. Just get our Money Back, including the 100 million dollar bonus Lloyd Blankfein got after the bailout. That was also paid for by our taxpayer money.
