Okay, obviously hacking into somebody's calls is illegal everywhere. That being said, why is it such a big deal that they were hacking into the voicemails of dead people? It seems a little much to bring down a media conglomerate. I don't like any of Murdoch's garbage television but nobody I talk to seems to have any idea of why this has gotten so big...
Really? It's tough for you to understand why it's a big deal? Do you really think that it was simply hacking into one phone? I think the point is that if it was going on with seemingly meaningless situations, you bet your sweet buttocks it was going on at all levels.

All I'm saying is that he runs the largest media empire in the world and I am at a loss for words as to how hacking into a dead person's phone can bring that empire down. He became vulnerable the moment he started hacking into "common" people's life and misery. One thing is to invade privacy of famous celebrities and politicians (which society expects to have their privacy invaded), another is to invade regular "innocent" people's intimacy. Once you cross that line, public opinion got inflamed.
Someone must have realized this and it was easy to lit the fire and bombs away.

Big companies may not get trampled by elephants but they might be eaten by ants. If enough people walk away from buying its products it will go under. News of the World had the largest Sunday publication in the UK - two weeks ago. And now it's gone. Yes, OK, it may only represent 1% of Murdoch's empire but it's a chink in the armour (I'm English, hence the spelling).

At the time they hacked into Milly Dowlers phone nobody was aware she had been murdered. She was still officially missing and when the News Of The World found the voicemail was full they deleted messages so more could be left. This gave the parents false hope that their daughter was still alive.
Even though the murder was in 2002 the killer was only prosecuted last month and the Dowler family were in the news over their treatment in court. The scumbag lawyers defending the killer tried to paint them as bad parents and her father was a perv for having a porn stash. They had the public sympathy at this point and had the police on their side looking to bring about change to stop defence lawyers discrediting victims and their families as a weak defence.
So the Dowler family had public sympathy on their side and then the news broke about their daughters phone being hacked.
Then the next day it was 7/7 victims
Then the next day it was families of dead soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
Its snowballing and it isn't showing signs of stopping.
