Stay tuned for further developments.

And now they want to check every media company in the world for these kind of phone tappings which are a excuse to put a government guy in every media company "to check up on them".

Okay, obviously hacking into somebody's calls is illegal everywhere. That being said, why is it such a big deal that they were hacking into the voicemails of dead people? It seems a little much to bring down a media conglomerate. I don't like any of Murdoch's garbage television but nobody I talk to seems to have any idea of why this has gotten so big...

Tue, 07/19/2011 - 09:44 | 1469815 BeerWhisperer
BeerWhisperer's picture

Really? It's tough for you to understand why it's a big deal? Do you really think that it was simply hacking into one phone? I think the point is that if it was going on with seemingly meaningless situations, you bet your sweet buttocks it was going on at all levels.

You don't think google, facebook, etc don't collect your information without your permission?

I'm not trying to play the devil's advocate. I hate Rupert Murdoch and all that he stands for. All I'm saying is that he runs the largest media empire in the world and I am at a loss for words as to how hacking into a dead person's phone can bring that empire down. Its not like Jayson Blair's plagarism brought down the NY Times and Sulzberger...

He became vulnerable the moment he started hacking into "common" people's life and misery. One thing is to invade privacy of famous celebrities and politicians (which society expects to have their privacy invaded), another is to invade regular "innocent" people's intimacy. Once you cross that line, public opinion got inflamed.

Someone must have realized this and it was easy to lit the fire and bombs away.

Big companies may not get trampled by elephants but they might be eaten by ants. If enough people walk away from buying its products it will go under. News of the World had the largest Sunday publication in the UK - two weeks ago. And now it's gone. Yes, OK, it may only represent 1% of Murdoch's empire but it's a chink in the armour (I'm English, hence the spelling).

Tue, 07/19/2011 - 14:11 | 1471134 WakeyWakey

At the time they hacked into Milly Dowlers phone nobody was aware she had been murdered. She was still officially missing and when the News Of The World found the voicemail was full they deleted messages so more could be left. This gave the parents false hope that their daughter was still alive.

Even though the murder was in 2002 the killer was only prosecuted last month and the Dowler family were in the news over their treatment in court. The scumbag lawyers defending the killer tried to paint them as bad parents and her father was a perv for having a porn stash. They had the public sympathy at this point and had the police on their side looking to bring about change to stop defence lawyers discrediting victims and their families as a weak defence.

So the Dowler family had public sympathy on their side and then the news broke about their daughters phone being hacked.

Then the next day it was 7/7 victims

Then the next day it was families of dead soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Its snowballing and it isn't showing signs of stopping.

Yes the British Govt has exclusive (monopoly) rights to wire tap and also dictate every market under their thumb ....what with the Labour Govt and Tory/Lib-Dem Parties all successively blocking and stone walling Murdochs BSkyB takeover

Gee it's almost like all 3 parties have the same policies, like a 1 Party State (monopoly). And if you'd care to look at the policies of all 3 Parties at the last election they all looked so similar as to not make a jot of difference what colour rosette Party you voted for

The 1 Party (with 3 coloured rosettes) totalitarian State of Britain ...let's not get in the BBC's way of control of the media too, wouldn't want independents like Murdoch discolouring the sea of socialist red media propaganda

George Orwell you wasted your time and your wise words, the nation is sleep walking into the Totalitarian State and has learnt a big fuking zero from the purging of all independent voices as Hitler, Stalin and Mao practised.. welcome to 1984 in 2011 (and most ZH readers are joining the stirred-up zombie crowds)

these questions are coming from a Govt who are increasing spending and national debt faster than the previous rotten lot. They had 14 Enviroment Ministers in 13 years and the rest of their Depts had a constant stream slippery little socialist shits so the mud wouldn't stick to anyone as they raped the nation ...maybe Cameron or Brown can remember all their names yes!

this is coming from a Westminster who claimed the national debt was £900m and it was revealed over 2 weeks it was actually £1.1bn, er no, £2 Trillion, er now, still out a bit, it's £4Trillion. Some senile dementia level memory loss there eh!!!!

I could go on.. like waging 2 false foreign wars and a mountain of innocent civilian deaths (murders) in illegally occupied lands... but no let's get wrapped up in the vacuous image and trivia of Govt putting the private sector to rights.. this fuking sham show trial from the offices of the human sewer that is Westminster

I hope they are cut free after apologies are made.  The implications here are too great for it to be tied up nicely with a few criminal convictions.  No, they need to be released.   So, the failure of the entire system they control can proceed.

The disingenuous, money- and compensation-grubbing attitude of that fat questioner with the black glasses was despicable.  The efforts to move Murdoch into a big, fat compensation settlement - preferably one that breaks the company - is OBVIOUS.

Why should a bunch of LABOUR politicians - ideological socialists inherently opposed to anything smacking of "big business" - be able to grill the executives of aa well-run private business?

Yes, the young asian woman is boning Yoda.

Clearly all those blue pills have affected Murdoch's brain. Well that and being forced to answer all the"silly questions" that the "little people" are pestering him with.

Rupert must have the same type of earpiece receiver that Obama uses.  It is pretty clear that he takes his time waiting for his attorney radio transmit his advise on question responses before Rupert is permitted to opens his mouth.  If there is anything that needs to be hacked, it is those damn electronic transmissions.  That would be a real hoot!

This is the essence of true genius we are witnessing here.

Not only can "Cognitive Dissonance" write lofty disertations detailing the Zero Hedge phenomenon, but he can move to the simple pop culture  form to draw the perfect analogy to a modern day behavioral dynamic...that being "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (God rest his soul) dethroning the Hulkster.

Genius, I say!  Unaldulterated genius.

This is actually a very serious matter involving national security of at least the U.S. and U.K. (and who knows how many other sovereign nations that had law enforcement/intelligence divisions breached by Murdoch.

As for the show trials and media incitement of outrage on the part of average citizens, where there's no real substantive coverage of what all this means in terms of violation of law and exposing massive gaps in security protocol, it's nothing more than panem et circenses.

The UK is spy central. They have one of the best intelligence networks in the world.

It is no surprise that the media in the UK would develop similar technologies. The reality here is that this is the tip of the iceberg. And the British government has about as much of a chance as a snowflake in hell of stopping the broad use of this tech. All the media needs is a firewall between them and the source.

Bottom line... more circus.
