Watch Senator Sanders' 3 Hour (So Far) Long Filibuster On Taxes... Update: At 6:58PM Sanders' Speech Has Ended, Almost 9 Hours Long

Tyler Durden's picture

Senator Bernie Sanders commenced a filibuster speech at 10:25 am this morning objecting to the proposed tax extension. Three hours later, and now joined by Mary Landrieu, the soliloquy (or is that duoloquy) continues. While the backstage dealing will likely not be impacted much if at all by this speech, it does provide for entertaining viewing. Bernie sure is passionate about the topic.

Sorry pal, you can raise minimum wage to the moon, all you're gonna get is more unemployment; you can unionize every worker in the country, all you're gonna get is Chairman Mao's commune; Don't you get it?  If you're not an asset owner that benefits from money printing all the progressive taxes in the world will not help your sorry ass people. Just trying to help you to create a more equitable world, that's all.

"materialistic choices are a problem"

For whom? In whose opinion?

"But most of the problem is the stagnation of wages due to ludicrous bonuses for the top .1%."

Are wages stagnant?

Why is it a problem if wages are stagnant?

Are they stagnant because the bonuses are ludicrous?

Are the bonuses ludicrous?

How densely can hare-brained assumptions be shoehorned into written drivel?

i am generally in favor of lower and fewer taxes as i have never met one i liked but i think bernie is doing the right thing....

the phantasmagora of spendomania must come to an end with the asshole plutocrats putting up their share for a state which benefits them way out of proportion to lower income citizens...avoiding taxes is nothing more than deferring the obligations to debt and debt is a fool's solution to spendomania....the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money....

hang in there bernie....

I think you're referring to "Neo-Conservatives".  Comparing Neo-Cons with Fiscal Cons is like comparing preferred stock to livestocks.

Fiscal Conservatives wouldn't start a war that nobody can pay for, or create boondogles that breeds leech class rather than working class;

they wouldn't let the parasites overwhelm their hosts, as they know if the hosts dies, the parasites perish too.

No warfare, no welfare, that's fiscal conservative is about

If you are a fiscal conservative, do you let children starve in the USA?

Absolutes like No warfare, No welfare are not productive, there are social issues that have to be addressed, how would you propose to deal with parents that can't afford to feed or care for their children? What "standards" do you apply and who enforces it, taking a child into state custody is considered welfare, or are you proposing child work camps?

The Dalia Lama had the policy of No warfare, are you suggesting we adopt that "pacifist" route?

Sure, no money, no charity, it is that simple.  Playing Robinhood sounds good for the conscience, but once you run out of other people's money to rob, the whole system implodes.  Then a whole new class of have's and have nots will emerge out of the ashes.  I'm sure that's what you're waiting for, the "Reset".  Ahhh... the cycle continues.  I understand where all this welfare mentality comes from, the most saintly of hearts, but What would Dalai Lama do?  Rob others for saintly reasons or to do private act of kindness?

Why would anyone propose anything about business that's not of their own?  Parents that can't afford to feed or care for their children can be helped by those who can't stand seeing such things, if they so desire, through their own private acts of charity.  The trouble with do-gooders and world improvers is that they seems to mind everyone else's business but their own, and they don't think twice about using the brute force of government to achieve it.  Where it is you sticking your nose into other family's affairs or us getting into other countries affairs, there are no difference.  Take care of your own kids and life so that you don't become a burden of others should be your primary concern.

Are there really people supporting this idiot?  Yes, Bernie, great job - let's make sure you can steal as much money as possible from people.  Considering you're part of Congress, that's really your entire job description; "law" maker for the extortion racket known as the State.  The answer, of course, is not that federal spending should be cut dramatically - no, according to Bernie they just need to steal more money from people that have a real job (i.e., not a politican).

The government is an extortion racket, with a terriotorial monopoly on legalized violence, that threatens those living within the said territory with violence and uses violence against them in order to expropriate their property.  When you support this institution, when you condone it's behavior, you're scum.  I'm sorry, but that's just a fact.

Cheer on the parasite sucking more blood from the host, hooray!  Half the idiots on this forum fall face first for the populist rhetoric "oh those damn banksters!".  Keep being distracted by those receiving stolen property, rather than those committing armed robbery.

Then again, I'm just crazy to oppose an institution whose existence relies upon the violent theft of other people's property.

Bernie is the first Senator in quite some time that is actually using the filibuster instead of threatening to use it. This is how the filibuster should be used and not abused as it usually is by backboneless, silent politicos.  I'm looking forward to the transcript. At least Bernie isn't likely to break the 24 hour mark of Strom Thurmond.

Against this backdrop, Wayne Morse rose on the Senate floor on April 24, 1953. Described as "a lean trim man, with a clipped mustache, sharp nose, and bushy black eyebrows," he began a filibuster against Tidelands Oil legislation. When he concluded after 22 hours and 26 minutes, he had broken the 18-hour record set in 1908 by his mentor, Robert La Follette. Morse kept that distinction until 1957, when Strom Thurmond logged the current record of 24 hours and 18 minutes.

I despair of the the content of the ZH posts on this subject.  Bernie is simply pointing out the insanity of continuing tax cuts on the wealthiest among us who have enjoyed the benefits of not only low taxes but legalized theft from our government.  I'm suspecting a few folks here have benefited from this lopsided arrangement and hence Bernie raises their ire when he even suggests the game has been hopelessly rigged in their favor.

Let's just say the wealthiest should afford us a reach-around in the form of reasonable taxation on their stolen billions, as a matter of courtesy while we are being ass-drilled by them.

Tax the rich? absolutely. Since when is that unfair - they've benefited immensely from the tax policies of the past decade and more. The actual costs of running the system they have blessed by their political support has been borrowed, not taxed. Time to pay for what they asked for.  The notion of getting rid of an estate tax for estates above $10MM will breed an oligarchy the likes of which you have never seen. The Mars Family really thanks you.

Yes, I may be becoming a socialist, if that is what this kind of thinking boils down to. F* ck the rich.

Even when "progressive" tax rates for the wealthy were over 70%, they got even more wealthy!  Tax rates are no problem when you can bribe (oops, I meant "contribute some campaign funds"), to creatures such as Charles Rangel in the Ways and Means Committee to carve out special exemptions for you and your pile of moola!  Look at how the game is played, NOT just the playas.

"Bernie is simply pointing out the insanity of continuing tax cuts on the wealthiest among us who have enjoyed the benefits of not only low taxes but legalized theft from our government."

Excuse me, you have got to be kidding me??? The cause has been and is politicians who gave and are giving up their oaths to uphold the Constitution. Bribes and bad policy have become more important than the principles that have made this country like no other in history. An irresponsible government has allowed this condition we are in to persist. A naive public together with gerrymandering and irresponsible media and educational philosophies hasn't helped either! Step back please!!!

"Yes, I may be becoming a socialist, if that is what this kind of thinking boils down to. F* ck the rich."

Yep, spoken like a true parasitical mind-set. Always wanting to feed off what they didn't earn. Parasites always have to punish the rich to get at what isn't theirs. Just like the estate taxes. It's not enough that hard earned wealth is already taxed to the hilt but these stink-en parasites need their feeding once again.

This money is and never was yours. You can't fucking have it. I have a suggestion for your sorry ass. Go out and earn it!!!!

Here's a link that I pulled from another Zh'r. One of the best performances I have ever seen, and Baldwin is absolutely damn right. While other salesman are complaining, whining, and sniveling Baldwin is producing. You know the type...they are the ones that always out work and perform the rest. Many of them have no special talent other than a good work ethic, a little ambition, tenacity and the willingness to work hard instead of having the attitude of sloth!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-AXTx4PcKI

Tell me how much energy does it take for the minds of parasites to constantly think up ways of stealing other peoples wealth? What kind of ingenious ideas do you have about what strategies you can use to eventually suck away the capacity for your host's to give to you what you haven't earned? Do you have a dependency problem? Are you running around thinking of ways you can manipulate others into giving up what they have worked so hard for...just so you and your other parasitical bonding bitchez can spend what you haven't earned?

Good point. Singapoore was the easiest place I ever filed taxes, no complcated bullshit. Simple is better, less obfuscation. Exxon Mobil's tax returns are thousands of pages long ( 2009 24,000 pages) in the U.S. , how many man hrs. goes into that on both sides. Unbelievable.
