We Can Fix America If We Focus on What ALL Americans - Liberals AND Conservatives - Want

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

While there are some things that
liberals and conservatives will never agree about, there are many things
that we already all agree on.

Knowing the many things we agree to
empowers us, because it helps get us away from the distractions so that
we can realize that there is much common ground among all Americans, and
that if we work together, we hold a very strong position. If we shelve
our irreconcilable differences for a little while and join our voices
together on the issues we agree on, the sound will be so loud that it
will shake down the walls which are holding us back.

While the mainstream political parties try to sell us on their brand, the truth is that "poll
after poll shows that both national parties are deeply unpopular with
an electorate looking for something new and different"
. This essay focuses on what people want.

Break Up the Unholy Alliance Between Big Government and Big Banks

Conservatives tend to view big government with suspicion, and think that government should be held accountable and reined in.

Liberals tend to view big corporations with suspicion, and think that they should be held accountable and reined in.

Irreconcilable difference?

Not really.

Specifically, a Rassmussen poll conducted in February found:

70%
[of all voters] believe that the government and big business typically
work together in ways that hurt consumers and investors.

(and see this).

Remember that the government helped and encouraged the giant banks to get even bigger, and then has hidden their insolvency and shielded them from the free market, and helped them grow even during the severe downturn.

In return, the big banks and giant corporations have literally bought and paid for the politicians.

Conservatives might call it "socialism" and liberals might call it "fascism" - they are the same thing economically.

But all Americans - conservatives and liberals alike - can agree that it is not capitalism, and it is not American.

As
just one example, the list of prominent economists and financial
experts calling for the too big to fails to be broken up is wholly
bipartisan:

  • Dean
and professor of finance and economics at Columbia Business School,
and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George
    W. Bush, R. Glenn Hubbard
  • The leading monetary economist and co-author with Milton Friedman of the leading treatise on the Great Depression, Anna Schwartz
  • Economics professor and senior regulator during the S & L crisis, William K. Black
  • Professor of entrepreneurship and finance at the Chicago Booth School of Business, Luigi Zingales

Throw the Criminals In Jail

Liberals
tend to believe that the public should be protected against harm,
while conservatives tend to believe that people should be left free to
buy what they want.

Too far apart to ever agree?

No.
Conservatives believe that people must be held responsible for their
actions and punished for their transgressions. Indeed, some 82% of the American public wants tougher regulation of Wall Street.

Moreover, even for those who don't like the government sticking its nose in our business, liberals and conservatives agree that if a
company chooses to make a representation about something, it can be
sued if it is a lie. In other words, all Americans agree that fraud
laws should be enforced against everyone from
the homeowner who fills out a mortgage application on a small house to
the head of a giant bank who makes false statements about the bank's
balance sheets and the quality of it's investments.

Everyone agrees that financial scammers must be tried and put in prison.

(And
whether people believe in liberal Keynesianism or conservative Austrian
economics, we should all be able to agree that a free market without
bubbles is not possible without strong laws allowing prosecution of criminal fraud).

Audit the Fed

Both liberals and conservatives agree that the Federal Reserve should be audited. The bill to audit the Fed passed in a bipartisan landslide, and the overwhelming majority of Americans
favor a full and complete audit. Given that the Fed has such a
powerful influence on the economy, credit, unemployment, and which
sectors and even which individual companies win or lose, the audit - and
indeed whether or not the Fed should continue to exist - is a very
important issue.

Safe and Healthy Food and Water

Americans want to be free
to live our lives without being poisoned.  We agree on safe food, clean
water and a healthy environment.

For example, polls show:

Freedom and Fair Elections

All Americans agree that personal liberty and freedoms are vital.

We all agree that our own government should not murder us and then falsely blame others for it.

And we all agree that there should be free and fair elections. That is why - according to ABC News and the Washington Post - 80 percent
of all Americans oppose the Supreme Court's recent decision allowing
unlimited campaign contributions. Americans understand that - unless we
take the flood of money out of elections - Washington will represent
special interests, and not us.

And we all agree on publicly
verifiable, automatically audited paper ballot elections with reasonable
ID requirements, so that we assured that no party can manipulate
electronic voting results.

Whether the above list of common
positions seems modest or ambitious, the fact that we can all - liberals
and conservatives - agree on them is very powerful.

Because once we realize that we agree on them, and decide to rally behind them to restore prosperity to America, we will have a much better chance of turning our country around.

You
still might think that the people across the aisle are fanatics,
nutjobs, flakes, sinners or scoundrels on some issues. But remember
that - to the extent that they are working for the same goals you are on
the issues mentioned above - they are your valuable allies.

Big hat tip to Moneymutt for his help on thinking through areas of common ground.

GW, Thanks for your postings.  IMO, dialogs like this are a source of stability in the body politic and are only generated by people who want to improve quality of life in this country we call home.

Reality is that, people growing up in the North, South East and West tend to be think differently simply because the weather and likely means of livelihood are significantly different.  IMO, it should go without saying but I'll saye it anyway, people from Northern climes tend to be more liberal because the weather is cold enough to threaten life if there is no heat. But that isn't all bad because the cold winter weather helps to inform human behavior as well as control the bugs.

When I was a Southerner for my first 18 years, the out-of- doors recreations were available year around with no more than a light jacket.  Energy input was not required, it was there overhead every day.  I cared little about others in that environment because they were threatened only by their own various follies. Bugs were a problem. That oily mosquito repellant we had to smear on (when it was finally available) was no fun.  But it was a care free life.  Too much regulation was a bad thing.

So North and high population density East, regulation is good.

South, and low population density West, regulation is bad.

Big workaround required?

"All Americans agree that personal liberty and freedoms are vital."

This is nonsense, GW.  Even if people say the words - and everyone doesn't, not by a long shot -  it doesn't mean that they think they mean the same thing.

Case in point, the left's obsession with defining freedom as being free "from" things - such as being "free from lack of healthcare" and "free from poverty".

That's a pretty stark contrast to "free to do (insert thing here".  Naturally, they call this second type of freedom "negative freedom".

The only thing I want to be free "from" is the government fucking with my life, taking my money, and telling me what to do, at least to whatever extent is practical.

But, alas, we have leftists who insist that they know what is good for us, and bible-thumpers who insist that we do what their book tells us to.  Heinlein put it best - "laws are for other people".

"And we all agree on publicly verifiable, automatically audited paper ballot elections with reasonable ID requirements, so that we assured that no party can manipulate electronic voting results."

No, we don't.  We have people who insist on flimsy, easily manipulated election procedures so that they can screw with the results.  They're just so goddamned sure that they're right, and that everyone who opposes them is stupid and/or evil, that the ends justifies the means.  And if anyone questions it, they'll just scream that the other side does it.

GW, you need to be honest here.  Most here on ZH agree on most of these things, even if our beliefs differ in the details.  But the general population is a whole different story.

The left,if left to  their ends, will have you in chains, or a gun to your head to do it their way or else.

On the Bible thumpers, as a non violent group, they have no military/police powers, and your free to absolutely ignore them. They will not be coming after your life.

Feedom of Speech, and Religion are capstones of our Republic.

Personally I fear those that can and will take my life, if I do not GO ALONG with their views.

The leftists have shown this time and again.

The PTB that are now in control, are uber leftists, and they will enlsave you, re-educate you, or you will dissapear.

As far as GW's article, yes a large part of Americans want peace, and just to live out their lives.

Problem, we have no substantial number of moderates left IN power, or in either party.

I am all for splitting this country however it works out best geographically, and let those that want it one way, move into  that area, same for the other side.

I hate that, but the bottom line is the population has become brainwashed, dumbed down, and are too ignorant and apathetic to make their own rational decisions.

And, yes the state has done it to us on purpose.

Divide and Conquer.

Umm, yeah, sure sure.

Funny how Fascism stems from the Conservative right, and Bakunin style Anarchy comes from Liberals.

How is this for example

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Freetown_Christiania

Freetown Christiania The community

Mural in Christiania

Meditation and yoga have always been popular among the Christianites, and for many years Christiania had their own internationally acclaimed theater group Solvognen, who, beyond their theater performances, also staged many happenings in Copenhagen and even throughout Sweden. Ludvigsen had always talked of the acceptance of drug-addicts who could no longer cope with regular society, and the spirit of that belief has still not diminished, even though many problems sprouted due to drug traffic and use (mostly of 'hard drugs', however, which are not tolerated in Christiania). These addicts enter and remain in Christiania and are considered just as integral to the Freetown ethics as the entrepreneurs. For this reason many Danes have seen Christiania as a successful social experiment. However, for years the legal status of the region has been in a limbo due to different Danish governments attempting to remove the Christianites. Such attempts at removal have all been unsuccessful so far.

Christiania is thus one of the greatest tourist attractions in Copenhagen, and abroad it is a well-known "brand" for the progressive and liberated Danish lifestyle. Many Danish businesses and organizations also use Christiania as a show place for their foreign friends and guests. The purpose is to show something Danish that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Among the local users are many social security recipients, pensioners, immigrants and clients from social institutions. Single mothers also visit here, not to mention the many homeless and jobless young people. Greenlanders, street people and vagabonds, all find a sanctuary here. But many other people such as students, musicians, artists, intellectuals and academics visit the Freetown often.

In Christiania the creative and recreational values are found in rich measure. In fact, the green ramparts of Christiania appear much more recreational and attractive to visitors than the well kept, deserted areas under the care of municipal Copenhagen. Many people, however, abstain from exploring and using Christiania, simply because they cannot find their way around.

The people in Christiania have developed their own set of rules, independent of the Danish government. The rules forbid stealing, violence, guns, knives, bulletproof vests, hard drugs and bikers' colors.

Famous for its main drag, known as Pusher Street, where hash and skunk weed were sold openly from permanent stands until 2004, it nevertheless does have rules forbidding 'hard drugs', such as cocaine, amphetamine, ecstasy and heroin. The hash commerce is controversial, but since the rules require a consensus they cannot be removed unless everybody agrees. Legalization of cannabis is one of the ideas of many of the citizens in Christiania. The region negotiated an arrangement with the Danish defence ministry (which still owns the land) in 1995. Since 1994, residents have paid taxes and fees for water, electricity, trash disposal, etc. The future of the area remains in doubt, though, as Danish authorities continue to push for its removal.

In every relationship there is a dominant and a submissive. Pretty simple, one makes fifty one percent of the decisions.

TPTB merely plays upon our own weakness and tendency to be devisive. We will turn on each other the first chance we get. It's hard wired into our system.

That's why the main thrust of EVERY consciousness raising Philosophy is to give up EVERYTHING.

Even to desire to have no desire is still a desire.

Alpha, Beta & Gamma

http://ascolibooks.com/truewords/?p=186

"Humans, as mentioned above, sometimes vary from one category to the next and are capable of changing from one type to another. In particular, the large group of Betas are capable of becoming Gammas; all they really need to do is to purposely alter their thinking. Being a Beta is primarily a learned behavior. Once Beta conditioning is undone, the individual will usually end up as a Gamma."

I like where you are coming from GW. but I believe you are not being realistic.  Most Americans may want these things, but they want the other guy to suffer to get them while they sit on their butt.  To many generals in our society and not enough soldiers. I also think the elites in our government are willing to play chicken with the general population, and see how much and what type of agenda they can push.  I truly believe they think people are so complacient they will not revolt beyond peaceful protests.

I have watched my father curse the government seven ways to Sunday about what thieves they are, and promptly "forget" to pay for the second movie at the dollar theater because no one is watching.  I have watched my brother curse people on welfare, who take food stamps, who live on the government dole, but doesn't realize if my parents and I didn't supplement his income he would be on of these "ingrates".

Individual people are the problem, as well as, government.  Most people have subscribed to the message that they are special, and that as an individual they are more important than the whole.  I witness selfishness everyday wholesale in this country.  From people riding over embankments to get to a parking place so they don't have to walk more than 10 feet to get into church.  To people cutting in line at the library because they think their question is of the utmost importance.  Society as a whole is broken.

Government is a collection of egomaniacal, self absorbed, ideologues who could not even spell the word humility let alone define it. They act like children when they do not get their way.  Guess what, the everyday American populace suffers from the same.  We all think we are humble and Godly until we park our asses behind the computer, and start flaming the guy on the other end because his/her view comes into conflict with our individual picture of a perfect world.  Compromise is almost as nonexistent as humility in our lexicon.

I can only see your vision coming true if all the posers and non patriots are weeded out of the equation.  This country and her people are going to have to be reaquanted with the words suffer and loss before they will truly appreciate what they have, and what freedoms they have already given away.

Lead by example has always been my motto.  I have served my country in the military.  I have educated myself on my own dime.  I raise my two sons to be respectful and appreciative of the things we have.  However, I know I am far from perfect because I have lost empathy for my fellow Americans.  I am sure I am not alone in this feeling!

Nice list GW and a good effort. Now, you left off the how. You are presenting a laundry list of actions that would supplant the ruling plutocracy. This would require a list of candidates willing to run and be elected. Because the ruling elite will not respond to voter appeals. In fact, they would allow the election of new candidates that would say what we want to hear and do another.

Reality? There is only one way to kill the plutocracy- massive civil disobedience through the elimination of banking transactions, full credit default and the creation of local and regional black markets for the movement of goods and services with payment in a money substitute other than FRN's.

This would be considered full rebellion by the government and treated as such. The question is: where are the 15-20% necessary to carry the load? When you can answer that, you will have a handle on the how.

Great effort.

"General population" is the key phrase.

The thousands of local, state and federal politicians, want the same things but they also want "re-election." They are not thinking as a group. "I got mine, you go get yours" attitude.

The ruling elite despise the up and coming masses joining the upper class or joining the ruling elite group. Exclusivity must be retained.

Elite Country club rules are designed to create the exclusivity aura. Paying $50k per year is better than paying $5k per year and have to mingle with the plebeans

I'll at least give you an A+ for effort.  I don't disagree with what you want to happen, and while many agree with you, I think there are simply too many people who can't resist the urge to tell other people what to do - whether that means telling people how to live, or what to eat, or what to do with their wealth.

Tossing out all of the red-blue nonsense from the powers-that-be still leaves us with that fundamental divide.

Drive an hour in one direction from me and you'll find yourself in the middle of a city full of yuppies and hipsters who don't own a car and think SUV's should be banned, think firearms should be banned, and think their world would be great if only everyone had to pay a 60% income tax because of all the "services" it would provide.

I live in the middle of nowhere, but have a decent little home.  You need 4wd to get up my driveway; there are (very) large predators here, and law enforcement response times can be over an hour; there are no services here, and there won't be any regardless of how much I pay in taxes.

I have no problem with those other people living the way they want to, but I don't get the same courtesy in return.  It doesn't matter how far away you go, They Know Best and It's For Your Own Good.  Every year brings more laws, more rules, more regulations, more taxes, more permits.  There is no indication that these people are ever going to stop.

Where is the common ground here?  I'm not a conservative by any means, or some sort of crank recluse.  I'm simply tired of the bullshit - but "the bullshit" is some of these people's idea of the perfect place to live, and they can't or won't keep it to themselves.

I can tell you, and you can tell me how WE what each other to live all day long, bottom line is neither of us can make the other do shit.

This country was founded on personal liberty, and rights.

With that,comes Responsibility.

I am a conservative, to the bone,( remember I was raised when the Constitution mattered, and I HAD rights). Those were the days.

Still I can give you my ideas, and my opinion, and you can tell me to go screw a goat.

People (conservatives) are JUST and sick and tired of people who not only want to TELL you what you should do, but take it to the next level and FORCE you to do it.

Free speech is paramount, a police state being run under the guise of a Government, is a whole different issue.(allowing that to continue is our fault).

Bottom line in the sand, is the fact,I /we just want to be left alone, and peacfully.

Thats where Common Law, and Natural Law came in.

Unlike your characterizations, I have no desire to tell you what to do, if what you do doesn't affect me or my family. Responsibility doesn't begin and end with finance in my worldview; not poisoning others falls under the same umbrella.

I've met 'just' people of all stripes, and MANY unjust 'conservatives' (what they're conserving beyond their own power and influence is anyone's guess...it's certainly not civil liberties).

Free speech is a chief value of mine as well, but I differ with many in not seeing money as speech because I recognize that it has a decidedly corrosive effect on our politics and enables TPTB to maintain their stranglehold.

But that doesn't change the fact that the majority of those people seem to be quite content with living in a horrid nanny state as long as they can smoke their weed and not worry about getting stuck with a kid.  As long as they're not being forbidden to do something they want to do, it's all good.  And we're approaching apples-to-oranges territory, here, hard to seriously compare "they won't let me bear arms" to "they won't let me smoke weed".

The point remains - there are those willing to let others alone as long as they aren't hurting anyone else, and there are those who have a raging hard-on for Big Brother.

The comparison is more plums to prunes...you believe your right to bear arms will protect you in some way from tyranny, but you're sadly mistaken; if your house gets lit up with Whiskey Pete, the AK47 in your basement will be of little use. "All Ideal pasts, all futures which have not yet come to pass, simply obstruct our consciousness of total vivid presence."

Never Read him... But will.

He sounds pretty in line with many of the ideas i have seen coming from people who think outside of the box.

A lot like Miyamoto Musashi (5 rings), Bruce Lee, Many others. Zen bend. There is really something to all that as you know.

Wow Thanatos, this is what the elite have been doing to most of us for years. Right On. Great Stuff.

Look how the media uses No.4  more often than we eat.  It's amazing, the same talking points repeated by four different networks daily.

Even the financial networks, "Better than expected,"  anyone. Just buy stocks, they are better than expected.

Yeah Rocker... It's a real slap inna face huh?

You should grab a copy of the PSYOP manual here...

Pay no attention to all the bullshit in the front and get to the technique sections... You can read all the administrativa later.

My favorite is the incredible truth!

People have no fucking idea how owned their asses really are, or how easy it was to own em.

This shit is a real eye opener to most folks... There is a science behind the madness... Bet your ass it gets used on you as soon as you have contact with the world every morning.

No, these are the right answers. (Aside, perhaps, from a couple that I don't get.) Don't do the knee-jerk.

I'd be happy to discuss my guaranteed to be marginal understanding of any of these subjects.

All of these come from observations of what works in the real world when David steps to Goliath.

They come from GG John Robb, Specwar Operator, War College Professor, Author, and rather homely looking guy.

He'd sneek right past the guards...

Review this website. Laugh and say I am crazy.

When this guy says boo, code browns happen in war rooms all over the world.

I learned my favorite word there: Systempunkt

spot on, Mr. Washington.

Washington D.C. needs to be shut down by overwhelming numbers of people peacfully protesting at the White House/Treasury, Capitol Buildings, Supreme Court and the Fed.

earnyermoney,

Have you tried communicating with your Representative lately.  Your Representative is going to care about your opinion.   After that you have two Senators who will respond to weight of opinion in their state on various issues.  Your opinion may only be entered as a check mark on a list of subjects but it will have some weight in shaping opinion.  These people work for YOU and if they are getting the message that the public wants rectitude in the regulation of banking they will at least try to look like they are responding.

Yes. My representatives make note of my position with 2 of the 3 extending their middle finger.

The time has passed for calling or writing your representatives. These fascists will understand people in the streets.

While the author has many great articles, this one sucks. And Umop says it best. Divided we fall. We have been falling for years for the elite who run our government, our media, our elections, our FED, and our future. That's why we are on a fast track to hell and a depression. We have not seen nothing yet. They take this mantra of divide the sheepies right out of the military hand book. And yes, it is a WAR. The Elite vs. the Poor and Middle Class.  The Poor equals anyone who earns less than 50 thousand a year.  Want to know how bad it will be. Know the percentage of people who earn less than 100k a year. This is who the elite will divide and conquer.
