What Foods Are Highest in Antioxidants? Some Inexpensive Foods Are Higher In Antioxidants than the Newest Pricey "Superfoods"
As I've previously noted, antioxidants fight inflammation and many diseases, and help protect against damage from radiation.
But how do you know what to eat to get more antioxidants?
Sellers
of supplements hawk their wares, with the newest "fad" supplement
boasting "super antioxidant" status costing an arm and a leg. Unless
you are independently wealthy, these superfoods might be out of reach.
But it turns out that many common, inexpensive foods are high in antioxidants.
Specifically,
the United States Department of Agriculture has developed the "Oxygen
Radical Absorbance Capacity" (ORAC) scale to determine the amount of
antioxidants in various foods.
Originally developed in the 1990s, USDA updated their findings last year.
A website called ORACValues.com lists foods and their ORAC values either by rank or alphabetically.
Interestingly, the following spices and foods all have ORAC values higher than the expensive fad "superfood" acai:
- Cloves
- Sumac bran
- Cinnamon
- Hi-tannin Sorghum bran
- Oregano
- Turmeric (the spice found in curry)
Indeed, the ORAC value for cloves (314,446) is 3 times higher, cinnamon (267,536) 2.6 times higher, and oregano (200,129) almost twice as high as compared to pricey acai berries (102,700).
And while the old statement that "brightly colored fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants" is true, the ORAC tables show that many grains, spices and even unsweetened chocolate may be even higher in antioxidants.
So eat your fruits and vegetables - they contain a lot of beneficial substances in addition to antioxidants. And consult the ORAC tables to help you learn about inexpensive - and delicious - superfoods.

"Fighting Radiation & Chemical Pollutants with Foods, Herbs & Vitamins", is a book I have had on my shelf for years. Lots of good information in that book, but it boils down to a vegan lifestyle. That means eating grains, beans, fruits and vegetables and skipping all dairy, fish or meat. I have done that.
However, I am now afraid to drink water, bath or shower in water, wash my dishes and clothes in tap water, brush my teeth in said water or eat "fresh leafy herbs" or "vegetables".
Is is best just to drink wine and give up eating? At least the wine I have was bottled years before the Fukushima accident.
France says don't drink tap or rainwater, don't stand in the rain, don't eat leafy vegetables, don't drink milk or eat creamy cheeses. I cannot load up on water and food for the next 30-50 years which is what people need to do under the present circumstances, as this is going to go on during our lifetime. Food and Water are now either pre-Fukushima or post-Fukushima.
Unfortunately, loading up on grains, beans, water, etc. can only be done for so many decades. Is moving to the Southern Hemisphere really the "final" solution?
Take a long look at this link which shows all the radiation on a world map in real time, and the severity of each type of radiation. See http://2012indyinfo.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/4142011-radiation-fallout-update-asia-usa-canada-receiving-high-mid-levels/

Parisian, thanks. Kinda of ironic that most of the "health nuts" live along the west coast---Cali, oregon and Washington--and they are being radiated the strongest....even my neighbor's son choose Louis and Clark Law School (Oregon) over some top shcools like Vanderbilt because he wanted to be "in a healthy environment."
Life is strange.
"skipping all dairy, fish or meat."
Jack LaLanne ate fish 7 days a week. So he would disagree with you (if he were still alive). Omega 3s...
All l-ascorbic acid molecules are identical and it doesn't matter if it's made from GMO or not. Most commercially available ascorbic acid is obtained from a fermentation process by gmo bacteria. I wouldn't be afraid of this process, as we've been consuming this material for decades.
Radiation is harmful because it damages DNA. Antioxidants are called antioxidants because they protect fat or fat-soluble materials from oxidative degradation, or they protect the fat in cell membranes from oxidation. Some antioxidants may protect DNA from degradation as well, although this is typically not caused by the oxidation process.
Some antioxidants such as BHT get a bad rap from health food nuts, but this molecule may protect DNA.
Oh, and for those in the Conspiracy business.... note chocolate. What about the corner on cocoa delivery and the Ivory Coast?
Got milk?
You forgot the best one...WINE! Drink a few glasses a day, and you'll be able to surf the (soon to be) radioactive coast of CA, no problem!
Resveratrolmmmmm Curry.
dude, why would you trust ANYTHING any government agency says?
I've been following an anti-aging program since 1983 (and I ain't dead yet!). You should be taking all those antioxidant anyway, just to slow down the aging process. If you're worried about radiation, take kelp every day and save the potassium iodide for when there is an actual spike in radiation in your area.
The most efficient antioxidants are BHT's, for example E321

Inexpensive, not delicious, and found in most cereals and canned foods
Where the heck can you buy Sumac or Sorghum bran? I've looked everywhere but I can't even find it for sale. I am serious about wanting this info.
Sumac grows wild here in western NC, as does cannabis. For some reason, more people harvest the cannabis. Probably something to do with free radicals. Like Abbie Hoffman.
A+++++ .
Make sure you don't harvest the poison sumac . Shorter variety. Tall kinds have the large burgundy/red cluster of "flowers" at ends of branches . I think its just best to get a good herb book with color pictures so one can recognize plants that can be put to good edible / medicnal purposes . Plants !!!!! Where do you think all the drug derivatives originally came from ? Certainly not a Lilly lab !!
Funny.
For whole grain sorghum and sorghum flour, try health food stores. You can also buy Sorghum syrup, which is like molasses. Also try a Google search. Sorghum has a mild flavor and could be used in a lot of recipes.
Buy multivitamins high in Vit C, D, E. Can also soak your clothes in borax for a cheap DIY radiation suit. Or get the real deal and have your family be the first on your block to vogue for it. Spit spot, no worries.

How about Roadkill? I thought they were good? A dash of Tobasco and it tastes like chicken.
Oh, shit. Here come the coon jokes.
:D
Roadkill Cafe: You kill 'em, we grill 'em
Carrion Carryout.
Vitamin C! cheap and very effective.. just make sure its not from a GMO source and its been processed correctly.
turmeric is an amazing taste. You will find it in numerous foods. It tastes different on the same food changing the amount. Supposed to seriously interfere with all oral cancer formation and anti tumor effect. But I'm just a fish.
Big fan of tumeric.
I <used to> love the Japanese tea maker Ito En's Green Tea with it (created with Dr Andrew Weil, the integrative-medicine guru) but those days are over.
I had an indian cab driver tell me that his mother had a cure for the common cold which was to mix tumeric with warm milk. His name was also Baldeep Dikshit so I've never quite been sure whether to believe him or not.
I ran across turmeric when investigating arthritis...it has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties.

I am glad you wrote this article. I have heard that Tumeric is a wonder spice and even once purchased a large quantity with the intent of adding it to various recipes - but old habits and recipes die hard -- thanks for the reminder
Here here. I use it in my eggs. Yummy.
There's a good strong ale in there somewhere.
Note to self; Sell some silver, start massive "organic" oregano garden. Thanks.
Oregano is easy to grow and is so prolific in my garden I treat it like a weed ... until now.
Daily diet of champions, SteveNYC's recco:
- Green tea (Japanese, Chinese, w jasmine etc. go nuts w green tea)
- Hemp seed (a real super food)
- Pumpkin seed, walnuts, cranberries
- Raw spinach, broccoli, kale, avocado
- Red wine
- 75% plus dark chocolate
Vegan swine.
is that like better than free range chicken? cause if left to their own devices those pigs will eat most anything.
That's cool, I'm on the Red Wine and Dark Chocolate Diet, too.
So far, I've only lived to be 113 but I still have all my hair and I attend Volcano Dancing classes twice a week.
I'm not quite sure why this Organic Gardening article is on ZH.
Accidentally junked , sorry . G.W.'s article follows up on Tylers rancher / p.m. piece .
Food , aka protien more important than gold and silver . If you are not adding high protien drys ( beans , etc ) to your "pantry" , you are making a mistake . We have over 200 lbs of the good protien dry foods at his point .
Also G.W. makes the claim of antioxidants helping fight radiation (?!?) poisoning . Uh , I think not . So it ties in with the Japanese nuke meltdown stuff. Sprial logic to say the least . Now for a glass of red wine - cranberries are good as well , and blueberries .
