While Perusing Official Greek Embassy E-Mails...
Curiously, Zero Hedge just received the following email from the Greek Embassy. Little did we realize that our fringe, breathless ramblings were considered necessary and sufficient to merit official government listserv inclusion.
We write today to announce the upcoming visit of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou to Washington, DC from March 7-9.
During his time in Washington, the Prime Minister will be meeting with President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senator John Kerry, among others.
Mr. Papandreou will also give a speech at the Brookings Institution on March 8th at 10:30 am, entitled 'Greece, Europe, and America: Rising to the Challenge of Change' that will outline his vision for global economic cooperation and highlight lessons to be learned from the ongoing European financial crisis. We welcome your media involvement in the visit and are on hand to facilitate you in any way possible. Please find attached some briefing materials on the Prime Minister, the Greek economy, as well as one recently published articles on George Papandreou and the European debt crisis.
If you require any further information, please contact:
a) Press Attache Magda Hatzopoulos (cell: 202-286-5658, Hatzopoulos@greekembassy.org ) or
b) directly the Director of the Prime Minister's International Press Office, Mr. Vassilis Papadimitriou, who will be in Washington from the evening of March 7th
(cell: +30.697.324.9009, internationalmedia@primeminister.gr)Best regards,
Greece Embassy of Greece

Zero Hedge will certainly consider being "involved" in these visits, and sharing some very much non-trivial Q&A with Mr. Papandreou.
We also received the following attachments from the Greek embassy:
- Greek Economy Facts and Figures (this presumably was not created by Goldman's international corpfin syndicate); then again GDP growth in 2011, 2012 and 2013 is expected to be 1.5%, 1.9% and 2.5% in baseline. We somehow doubt the baseline adjusts for riots and extended strike shutdowns of Athens and other major economic centers.
- George A. Papandreou - Profile
- and, most interestingly, "Will Greece Spark Global Meltdown." We are still trying to figure out what the point of including this essay by Harvard economist, and official advisor to Papandreou, Richard Parker in the distribution email is, considering it contains the following:
"The situation has the makings of an Aeschylean tragedy. If help isn’t forthcoming, little Greece--just 2% of Europe’s GDP—could, against its will, set off a chain reaction that pulls down Portugal, Ireland, Spain, perhaps even Italy—and thereby throws Europe’s, and then America’s and rest of the world’s, fragile recoveries into reverse."

"We welcome your media involvement in the visit and are on hand to facilitate you in any way possible."
Has my beloved ZH gone mainstream or is this simply a case of foreigners not conducting proper due diligence and assuming that ZH is just another cog in the fawning corporate media empire?
I would love to see Marla or Tyler show up to claim their press credentials and ask one embarrassing question and another, but then that would expose the personality of ZH to media scrutiny and ad hominid attack, which is the only defense the Ponzi has against logic, reason and critical thinking.
Oh well, one can dream of sugar plumbs, fairy tales and an independent and active 4th (or 5th) estate, can't one?
"Has my beloved ZH gone mainstream"
How long did you expect to keep the ice cream for yourself? I am guilty of taking some of ZH and going vertical. The Welling interview with James Rickards absolutely could not be left in the descending archives. (M & T can slap my wrists if they have a problem with it)
If we don't get it right by November then we are so totally screwed and I have to execute an exit strategy that is not comforting. I love the USA. The US Parliament can rot in fucking hell. And anything ZH posts that should be mainstream will go mainstream.
Whether or not mainstream knows what any of it means...you can lead a man to water. And by fishing I don't mean going to Santa Monica Seafood.
"If we don't get it right by November then we are so totally screwed and I have to execute an exit strategy that is not comforting."
That sounds like extremely high expectations for one election and I hope you're prepared to be disappointed. The political/corporate/social system is beyond simple redemption and can not be reformed from within. The very process of assimilation in order to work within to effect change assures the ultimate corruption of the moving party. You must become one of "them" in order to change "them" thus removing the reason or even desire to change "them".
At best, under the current paradigm, we might hope for a morphing away from the most destructive aspects of fascism/corporatism central control. The problem as I see it is that the "problems" are so much larger and more deeply entrenched than are visible to the casual viewer. Even the serious truth seeker gets caught in a black hole of endless discovery, more discovery and even more discovery. Unfortunately, matter is flowing in the black hole faster than the researcher/truth seeker can shovel it out.
"Ad hominid"? Are you calling these 'two' the missing link?
Are we talking mediterraneopithecus here?
That's what I get for not checking the answer spell check gave me but instead just accepting the first choice given. Thank you for pointing out my error.
On the other side of the coin, wouldn't the world be just a little better if one weren't so quick to point out obvious errors and instead focus on the message? That of an actual inquisitive and proactive "free" press?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem
It was a felicitous error which tickled me and in truth not much of an error at all. I do regret if you feel that your message was given short shrift. I haven't any problem with your message (writ large). I was simply teasing a little. Forgive me my inartful jibe.
Thank you for clarifying your intent. And I guarded against my mistaken interpretation to some extent by thanking you.
As silly as it may seem to some, I find that in the blogsphere, where "body language" can't be discerned, a smiley face can go a long way. I use them all the time to let the poster know that I'm pulling a leg, sometimes my very own. :>P

Why can't we do both? This important distinction has been discussed in a scholarly treatise:
On the Distinction between Ad Hominid and Ad Hominem and Its Relevance to Ecological Research
http://www.jstor.org/pss/20167794
So this is a legitimate snark and I am awarding Citizen Anonymous +1 for it.
We now return to the original serious discussion, already in progress.
Serious discussion? What, you mean sugar plumbs?
I clicked the link and had a belly laugh at myself. Touche!
It ain't me ...
Greece loves doomsday scenarios like zero hedge. The whole
point of the Greek roadshow is to convince everyone that it
will be the end of the world if they are not bailed out.
Greeks are playing teerorist games by sending you this article! They want you to make a big deal of how Greece failing could take down the Euro and the globe's fickle recovery! Huge leap.
Greek authorities can't say this directly to Obama or other heads of states because they do not want to be seen as terrorists: Bail us out or the global economy goes, So the greek cocksuckers are trying to use you as their tool in making "their" point!
I say FUCK them. Let them burn. Our own baks did this to us and look where it got us. We are not falling for these threats again.
I, for one, would LOVE IT. A vid of any high level government official pissing his pants while you're tearing 'em apart would be just wonderful - if you can manage it.
What if we all showed up and claimed press credentials? Tyler could have easily blacked out the contact info. If i went, I'd tell the Greeks my name is Robert Paulson.
>> I'd tell the Greeks my name is Robert Paulson
+10...
Are you *big* enough to fill those shoes (er, shirt)?
Oh, please attend! You can wear a paper sack over your head, right?
"Fight Club was the beginning, now it's moved out of the basement" (to quote the movie)
I can just see it now, ZeroHour on FOX network, right after the O'Reilly Factor. Everyone, even the guests wearing bags over their head. Lady guests would be required to put lipstick on their bags!
Ha! Love it!
What a wonderful idea!
"I can just see it now, ZeroHour on FOX network, right after the O'Reilly Factor."
That my friend is exactly where we're going, a co-opted "truth" movement that isn't really looking for the truth but just wants to appear to be looking for the truth. Once the powers-that-be can no longer resist the "truth" movement, they will fall back to absorb and assimilate the opposition. The ultimate "reality" TV, which will be about as "real" as reality TV is today.
Please have helicopter Ben drop some cheeseburgers on us. Pepsi! Pepsi!
Ran-dy! :)
I don't see anything asking you for your account numbers. Are you sure its authentic?
I would attend as a ZH proxy, but everyone knows I can't talk and ask questions.
Just curious, what is political protocol for this? They did send ZH an invitation, so couldn't someone who does not mind their actual identity being known show up to attempt to ask some legitimate, pre-approved ZH questions?
That would be sweet!
+1
Marla et Tylers,
A nice, incisive list of questions would be great!
"This one from financial blog, Zero Hedge, quote: ..."
hmmm.....there seems to be an error in the schedule. where is the meeting with shalom ben?
he's the main purpose of the trip. he's included in the "among others". why would he need to talk to anyone else?
the total greek debt is $300 billion. that's just another aig. ben can do that with his eyes closed.
"the total Greek debt is $300 billion."
I always find it humorous to see comments citing the total debt of this or that sovereign, as if anyone expects any country to ever pay it all back. What everyone really worries about is will the country be able to roll each piece over into new debt when it comes due. Can the industrial size 5 gallon tomato can be kicked down the road long and far enough so that I, you, we, they, whomever is buying the newest debt issued has a reasonable chance of getting their money back down the road?
At the short end of the curve, while the holder of the debt feels as if the debt is being paid off, for the sovereign it's simply rolling it over by issuing new debt to pay off the balance due on the old debt. For longer dated debt, it comes down to the holder believing that as long as the short end of the curve is still being rolled over, the longer end of the curve can be sold on the secondary market. It comes down to the greater fool theory. Are there (new or old) greater fools that can be convinced they will receive their principal back in x or xx years?
Is anyone really buying 30 year US Treasury paper with the expectation of holding it to maturity when it only has a coupon of less than 5%? I ask that question in all sincerity. Does anyone ever really expect any sovereigns' debt to ever be fully paid off? Aren't we all expecting inflation to save us from the abyss?
very nicely done, Lizzy. you are SOOOOO good at fading in those one liners. Hope all is well!
"there seems to be an error in the schedule. where is the meeting with shalom ben?"
Error in the Schedule?
Greek fools should be talking to the real government, Lord Jamie and Lady Lloyd... not their eunuch nephew Timmay G.
So.....the Greek Embassy wants to fight? Do they know the rules? Can we get Papadreou a screen name and avatar? I say this could be his:
"going.along.for.the.ride....opa!"
http://jamesedyrn.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/greeceriotsathensdec122008...
Who says he does not have a screen name and avatar already?
Mr Lennon Hendrix is it? A supposed gold bug...hmm....them greeks got gold and they are on about how the Germans took their gold...hmmm.....
this is true, the greeks do have "their" gold, and they did chastise germany anyway (smokescreen? entertainment? yes and yes). I am a "supposed" gold bug, and I do want more....hmmmm.....haha!
Invite someone you trust to represent ZH and send to ask questions.
Maybe we could get Grayson to do it. He's probably batspit crazy, but, at least in the matters of present concern, he might just be *our kind of* batspit crazy.
I dont agree with him on much but he is dead on when it comes to the bankers..
YES, he is.
What bothers me is that so FEW of our elected officials are even capable of understanding the depth of the fraud and NONE of them, but Grayson have the intellectual chops to actually ask questions which will get us anywhere!
These incumbents will ALL be voted out on their asses in the next election. Their stupidity and collusion with the Banking Cabals is just unbelievable!
You should talk to more elected officials. Many of them to do get it. They just don't want to ruffle any feathers. They know how power and appropriations work.
There's only a handful of districts that can tell the Treasury to stick it 247365.
Greeks must want to spec out paint colors since Iceland has the market cornered on red.
Maybe they know the "real' questions won't get asked and want the answers out there for everyone to see when ZH asks them . In other words if ZH went in there they would'nt be looking to hang the Greek gov't but the seedy characters who have surrounded them prior to this problem .My only concern is ZH might start charging a subscription fee of $3.65 /year (in gold of course )to start covering their travel costs ,being I love this site I would have to susbscribe but would definitely feel like it was extortion - Seriously though $3.65 /year to have some real questions asked at press conferences would be more than worth it ,especially if the answers put some more pieces of the puzzle on the table .
"Zero Hedge will certainly consider being "involved" in these visits"
They still do make great feta cheese. That's reason enough.
Beware of Trojan Horse.
Beware Greeks bearing gifts.
Sorry. Someone had to write it.
Shouldn't that be 'grifts'?
That should read 'Beware Greeks bearing grifts'
"We are still trying to figure out what the point of including this essay..."
Really?
" If help isn’t forthcoming... world’s, fragile recoveries into reverse."
This is likely to be the whole take away from the PM's visit. Bailout or else.
...against its will, set off a chain reaction...
Translation: it is not our fault.
alternative translation - either we get your help, or we take you down with us.

You nailed it Man!
I think that is everyone's plan, including the US.
Man I wish I could afford some pop corn! This is the true March Madness.
It's amazing how many people want to test that theory.
So they put themselves in this mess, now they think they can blackmail the world into letting them go right back to the status quo! What a joke....
Isn't that what Iran is trying to do?
Dr. Ben Shalom Bernanke is no doubt "among others" the PM will meet.
"outline his vision for global economic cooperation"
Somehow I think this means I'm picking up the tab for Greece's profligacy. Would there be any other possible reason for Papandreou to visit Washington at this time (other than to escape the riots)? Clearly Merkel told him to go ask Timmy. I seriously doubt anyone at the Brookings Institution gives a flying f**k what he has to say. He ain't Aristotle.
"He ain't Aristotle."
LOL
Wow...I am grinning so hard my face hurts! ZH getting the recognition it so richly deserves. But what a dilemma, how will you do this? Send someone with a speakerphone device?
Haha -- who knew TD was a AD fan! Gravy!
.
Tyler - you're the man! Love the AD reference...I just watched that surrogate series of episodes a few days ago.
I live in DC - happy to be your advocate if need be. But I think for myself - I'm noone's surrogate. Even for someone I respect and admire such as yourself ;)
I would be very interested to see if you end up pursuing this in some fashion...it could be a ground breaking move for you all at ZH!
What the heck is AD? Dude looks like Super Dave Osborne to me. lol
edit: Oh, it is Super Dave! Arrested Development. I've never seen it.
It's Super Dave playing the surrogate on Arrested Development.
Just perfect... but I'd go with the SD outfit and the big "out of a canon... through the window " entrance!
ZH to send Super Dave? Brilliant! He can be accompanied by one of Robo's greek babes, Leo (he is greek after all), and Reggie. That way all eyes will be on Dave and the chick, and not the guys whispering in his ear.
Man, where's Benjamin Dover III when you need him?
Off topic, gov't health care:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1255858/Neglected-lazy-nurses-Ka...
I am sure they want to meet with Helicopter Ben for discussions also....
No time... print, print, print.
No kidding. You can always tell the psychopaths are in charge when they fail to address the most important issues:
let's send Reggie Middleton down there, I'm sure he's got interesting questions to ask!
Send one of Robo's Greek babes. Better press coverage\irony that way.
Give her a wireles setup and operate her
from a remote closet....
I have experience as a stunt cock, if that helps.
It might if you can hide your face with it... you wouldn't want to expose your identity would you?
Congratulations. The fight club that induces the oligarchs to start fighting amongst themselves (bankers who created crap products, CEOs who ship jobs offshore and lie about it), the group that can sow internal dissension, will be patriot heroes for the next 200 years.
don't go. it will just encourage them.
Greek Poverty Tour 2010
Brussels (EU)
Berlin (DE)
Washington D.C. (USA)
Following two very disappointing shows in northern Europe, the Greek Poverty Tour is landing stateside - home to the biggest suckers on the planet, the US taxpayer.
The Greeks are expecting a tour-ending sell-out in Washington D.C., the den of IMF/Wall St./Federal corruption.
Not that it matters to the american sheeple, but it should be noted that IMF money is actually an obligation of the US taxpayer. What the IMF spends, the US taxpayer will unwittingly bankroll.
When this bit of fraudulent theater is complete, will americans qualify for eurorail discounts? Seems fair enough...
You American rubbish, you ceaselessly issue banknotes to bail out your gangbanks.
Then your saved by phony, inflationary, money gangbanks drink our blood by playing short the collapse of Greece i.e. the collapse of Euro, i.e. the collapse of Europe, so the dollar that now is toilet paper will attract funds and will be the deposit currency.
Soros, Polson, Goldman Sachs etc should be hung.
The US government (not the private Fedral Reserve as they can swallow their losses) can give Greece Freddie and Fannie debt, that'll teach them! :)
I have it on good authority that the Fed spits.......
Do they have the list of greek americans emails for the rioting part?
We can all see where this is going... the greek leader is coming here with his hand out... the message>> " Give me some Money "
Pallet Tim says >> " OK , how much do you want..? "
the USA is already re-buiding Haiti ... now this bull shit...
I don't know but the Fed has quite a few bonds to sell this year and have every reason to try to keep rates low by not bailing out greece but keep them just above water where they don't default. If the Fed /treasury does kick in to bailout Greece it will most likely be thru the IMF with a lot of strings attached . An analogy would be to go to a mafia Godfather to save your business to get some small time goons off your back.Once the deal is done you pay interest on the gross of your business for life . Is Greece to become the next Haiti ?
Nah, the 53 American State. Heck they are more solvent than California and New York, right? Our welfare gives less though so they may not want all in...
come on folks, the greeks are coming to the u.s. to have the fed use its majic wand of now you see the problem, now you don't!! Germany cannot do it. The eurozone cannot do this because they are more transparent. Good ol Bernie and timmy will put on their majician's caps along with goldman sachs and the boys and abra cadabra BOOOM the problem is solved!!! This is the beauty of having a financial power house that is so secretive along with having the worlds only reserve currency. Its like being God of the financial world. This is what Feldstine of Goldman was saying when he said they were doing God's work Daaaa.!!
A quick visit to the IMF HQ is included in that visit I would assume.
Did everyone just notice the screeching of brakes heard 'round the world?
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aIcTfdm5rWdY&pos=1
That $3.5T mentioned in the article--you don't need to be too concerned about that bit. That's only a gross figure, so, no worries.
Leadership. Morals. What's my cut?
Invited by the Greeks, bummer...
maybe he come to US for political asylum and green card?
Papandreou already *has* an American passport, in case you did not know.
I'd like to buy one of their islands.
We, the owners of the islands, 'd like to f... you
Uncle Ben will land at the Greek embassy compound....
By helicopter
Probably the same helicopter that will evacuate Papapndreou from his office at Maximou str., one day (de la Rua-style)...
Greece 's only export - Papandreou's soporific trivialities and general incoherence about speculation, globalization, financialization, social cohesion and the fine distinction between bailout [a no-no] and some unspecified form of (apparently costless) aid come to America. Finally, you will now realize what we are putting through here, in Greece, with only temporary lapses, which, despite our best efforts, can only become more and more often, unpredictable and extreme. You will now come to the inevitable conclusion that the problem with Greeks is not that they are too rebellious but exactly the opposite - that they are meek as sheep...And remember - Papandreou is not even the worst...
Hello,
the banksters will just do it to another area if the rescue greece. one of the other pigs, or the muni markek. they aren't going to stop. yes your tax dollar being used by goldman at the discount window to buy naked cds. isn't capitalism wonderful
Tyler please attend if you can.
Reminds me how clueless congressmen continue to go on The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Or those people who thought Borat was real.
George Papandreou is half American,he was born in Minessota.
As for Parker's essay,it's simple
''unfortunately our reckless fiscal management is about to cause a chain reaction that will destroy global economy.
Please don't bomb us.''

No matter the fate or the time, I will always remember ZeroHedge, and Marla and Tyler as two of the great freedom fighters for America, and two of the greatest News Anchors that have ever lived.
Already, my beloved Mayhem Project is MIA. Well, it was a good run.
Suffice it to say that ZeroHedge is now a massively important economics news site, of far more value to any active traders or investors than WSJ or TheStreet or Boomburg or any of the other washed and rinsed MSM apparatus we know will ignore and fail to deliver the information.
May ZH pwn teh WH.

Just saying...
If you have the chance to attend and ask some hard hitting questions there it would surely make for a briliant article. Maybe ZH users can all contribute some questions and you could ask the best ones.
On the other hand you don't have any problems making good articles at the moment so the trip might just be a waste of time and money.
maybe they got some post cards that I suggested people write to Greek embassy? I do not know if that is creepy, or really neat. I am leaning towards creepy.
For those of you just reading this, here are the Greek embassies in the US:
http://www.greekembassy.org/Embassy/Content/en/Article.aspx?office=1&fol...
If you have some advice for them, put it on a postcard! If you just want to be a dick about it, then write, "Neener Neener Neener!" on the post card. If you find that you have another 50 cents to spend, send an Attaboy! to our friends in Iceland: http://www.iceland.org/us
This is cheap entertainment at its finest!
Here's some irony. Right after the banksters pulled the plug on Iceland the World Economic Forum reported that Iceland was the most gender equal nation on Earth.
It's like the arranged nation state marriages are the same as the old fashioned ones.
Can you say Uncle Stupidis Treasury Emergency Stabilization Fund-- watch this one!
We are still trying to figure out what the point of including this essay by Harvard economist...
It's quite simple:

I am Chumbawamba.
Random.....
1. I would think the Greeks would be more careful to correctly spell the name of the U.S. Secretary of State.
2. I see Sarkozy was pretty bold today about defending Greece and that Europe will come through if, if, if needed to ward off the speculators (b'berg article, gotta believe TD will throw that one up).
3. Bernanke is a phucknut.
4. I see Volcker is big time in favor of stimulus and zero interest rates until the end of mankind from his speech in Berlin. Wow. Just wow.
that's all for now
Greece is ancient. Let them smell the coffee or ?.
Greece is a non entity just a pawn in the macro picture.
So let them march around in circles.
Smoke and mirrors game by the Germans et al.
NO BAILOUT FOR GREECE.
No GREASE for BAILOUT...
Most of the above comments are hilarious at best, Funny how the creators of all the funny money sit here and judge the Greeks, who by the way, HAVE BALLS to strike, demonstrate and voice their concerns against the system (mike like fight club) and the pussies all sit behind pc monitors HOPING and PRAYING their government will magically "understand" their plight. Americans are the most indebted people on earth..ha ha funny isnt it? Get of your fat butts and "voice" your dissatisfaction at your rapists in government, yes they are raping you and your kids. What little you know is limited tot he few square miles surrounding your homes, you are clueless to the rest of the world affairs, as smart as you kid yourselves to being, ha ha funny again . Fact is that Greece is a poor country with very rich citizens, most have no mortgages, all their homes are paid for, most citizens of Greece have no debt. Greece has NOT asked for any financial assistance only to be able to sell debt on favorable terms. Greece cannot PRINT funny money like America, so lets see who laughs last when Americans realize they are becoming the poorest dumbest citizens of earth
Send Marla...
Have her smoke the whole time...
There has to be pepperoncinis and olives on the hors d'oeuvre tray... I'd go...
Forget China. Forget Greece. The US is BURNING RIGHT NOW.
http://rt.com/Top_News/2010-03-03/california-berkeley-tuition-riot.html?fullstory#
The IMPOTENCE of the US Media is breathtaking. On the other hand, this should set us up nicely for DOW 36000 as that is ALL the Americans seem to care about anymore.
I'm not sure that 'impotence' is the correct word. In my view, 'management' or 'control' would fit better.
I never really understood the phrase 'the revolution will not be televised', but finally now I think I do. It's still important to observe the media though - just ignore all the stories that are covered in depth and pay attention to the ones they cover with one or two sentences (or ignore completely -hence the value of sites like this). Eventually they will get to the latter, but by then it will be for damage control.
Come now. The last time there was a /proper/ riot in California there were 53 deaths, and still the long-term political implications were pretty minimal. Burning trash cans in Berzerkeley? About as newsworthy as a /Hair/ revival.
Marla and Tyler:
Please do not go to this event. The Secret Service followed by the NSA will track your every physical and digital move after the event. Facial recognition will be in full effect. Unless you want the ZH bat cave to be found.
"The Secret Service followed by the NSA will track your every physical and digital move after the event. Facial recognition will be in full effect."
Anony is right.
The NSA and Homeland Security (THE intellectually challenged agencies...) are tracking Brad Pitt and Tim Burton's girlfriend looking for subversive Zero Hedge activity as we speak...
you should send this kid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJJniAJxkps
maybe Tyler et al. could show up wearing ZH anonymous bags w/ the eyes cut out and ask lots of questions.
I don't understand some of the reactions. It's a well known fact that PM Papandreou is a big internet fan and considers online media very important. If the people surrounding him believe that ZH has value, then kudos to them for trying to bring everyone on board.
