Why is National Security Being Invoked to Keep Basic Financial Information Secret?
Reuters notes:
U.S.
securities regulators originally treated the New York Federal Reserve's
bid to keep secret many of the details of the American International
Group bailout like a request to protect matters of national security, according to emails obtained by Reuters.
The national security claim may seem outlandish, but it is nothing new.
As Business Week wrote on May 23, 2006:
President
George W. Bush has bestowed on his intelligence czar, John Negroponte,
broad authority, in the name of national security, to excuse publicly
traded companies from their usual accounting and securities-disclosure
obligations.
In other words, national security has been
discussed for years as a basis of keeping normal accounting and
securities-related disclosures secret.
Why?

"Why is National Security Being Invoked to Keep Basic Financial Information Secret?"
That one is so easy a novice can answer it... Allow me:
It is a National Security threat because if the public finds out the details AND can read them... You will need the Army 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade to take away their torches, pitch forks and nutball right wing weaponry.
Keep in mind that Appomattox Va. gun enthusiast put a couple of holes in a police helicopter while evading the authorities last weekend. Pretty good marksmanship I would say...
There is one thing about the libertarian and right wing crowd... they have invested a lot of money in some really nice fire arms...
Lame post, GW, for you, of all people, should know that the Greenbergs have been thick as thieves with the OSS and the CIA, and were quite possibly among the cadre that pulled off 911.
That, I would bet, was behind the effort to cloak the AIG follies in such a manner.
Styve
the short answer to your question is that the oligarchs behind the fed are the same folks behind the cia....the police is nearly fully erected and these fucks don't want you to know how youins has been screwed....
Societies are cultivated by planners much in the same way that mushrooms are cultivated by hippies. That is, both are kept in the dark and fed loads of shit...
Outside of national security agencies, the most secretive federal entities are the Federal Reserve and the Securities Exchange Commission.
Considering that America is known for "free market capitalism" is it not about time that we shine a little sunlight on both of these opaque and hopelessly conflicted institutions? It can hardly be worse than what we've got right now.
With a little sunlight Congress and the White House might even learn a thing or two about financial markets.
The KNOW already! They know that there's no such thing, and that only through manipulation can they maintain their positions of power. Legislation is all about altering social positions/directions, which, by default, affects/distorts "free markets."
The housing fiasco is really quite the perfect story. You get the "Dems" clamoring for more houses for the masses (who are then supposed to vote for them), and then you get the "GOP" to go along because they can funnel the business to their wealthy campaign contributors. The alibis are there. It's like mutual assured destruction: neither of them are really going to go after the other lest they both go down; and, at this point there's so much plugged into this game that they cannot get out even if they wanted to.
Colonial,
You are right.
The trick is in figuring out how to present it to people. Say Federal Reserve to most people and you get a blank stare at first then the eyes start to glaze over.
We live in a society where people know alot more about Tiger Wood's driving skills than they do about currency creating methods of the FED.
In a society where the majority of people who cast ballots cannot name the people for whom they voted once they step out of the voting booth, who you gonna call? And how are you going to get such people to call their congress critter and complain?
We live in a society where the system is designed for those who want to lead their own lives yet which is populated not by the self-led but by followers.
It's a quandary, to be sure.
I've been working with voters most of my adult life and if my history has taught me anything it's that most voters aren't as bright as sunburnt tortoise shells.
Whenever anything goes wrong in this country you can be sure it's the government which is responsible, and the people are the government.
The SYSTEM is designed to be stratified! There is NO/ZERO/ZIP/NADA way that it can operate otherwise. That's capitalism. Understand?
The educational system has been set up to keep people obedient. Without challenging then people will become as they are, defeated.

the ZH army is growing now....
In my unholy opinion what happened over the past 30 years was a great idea called political correctness, this ideology kept us proletarians afraid of each other while the elite raped us over and over. Now we are truly f**ked.
Yes indeed. Especially since the entire premise of government actions over the same period appear to be faith based.
Cheers Gimp!
"Keeping us divided is the only thing keeping them whole." ---------------------------- The best pearl of wisdom I've heard in a long, long time.
I've always dreamt of an open, honest and just world where all government operations were public and transparent. With the level of corruption we live in now, I'm starting to question my wishes for it's too late. I'm kinda glad the majority of folks are unaware of the lies and injustice around them for if they did, there'd be rioting outside my doors.
It's become a cliche but worth repeating.
"It is well that the people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning." Henry Ford
"AIG has been a CIA front?
Interesting premise.
Cite your sources, please. . ."
dunno Anonymous, but the suggestion was to Wiki the founder, Cornelius Vander Starr & connect the dots. . .
I did. In 1962 Starr gave AIG US holdings to. . .Hank Greenberg. Who is a "social friend & client" of Kissinger. Who is also "Hon.Vice Chair & Director of CFR and a member of the Trilateral Commission (*cough* Rockefeller).
Even if he didn't take up Ronnie Raygun's offer of "Deputy Director of the CIA", still smells way fishy, no?
as for "citing sources" yeah, state secrets don't lend to that much. . .
(cheers to the first "Anonymous" post for the tip - I need to go for a walk outside now. . .)
For more wiki fun do a search on "Operation Northwoods." Gives more insight into how far all of these people will go to maintain their game/control.
dude, thats just one they want you to know about
AIG has been a CIA front?
Interesting premise.
Cite your sources, please, or go down into that special region of Hell reserved for the IPCC tricksters.
oh my god....the skittle shitting unicorn

Do some homework, the truth is out there.
Just a couple of items from From the first page of a Google search for a start.

This is what you are up against, spin. Think of the line with Al Pacino in the insider. 'No you fucked you, stop trying to invert stuff', something like that.
Its complete corruption, truths are inverted and repackaged as something else. Its the full on big brother type stuff, the scary thing for me is that the public at large has put up with it.
"suspend accounting principles" = declaration of war....so what war..... throwing out accounting and the US might as well close 'er up. no market faith left here hell even when accounting was "enforced" I never believed the Q's this will be the shadow fail of the US system
Cheshire Cat: If I were looking for a white rabbit, I'd ask the Mad Hatter.
Alice:The Mad Hatter? Oh, no no no...
Cheshire Cat: Or, you could ask the March Hare, in that direction.
Alice: Oh, thank you. I think I'll see him...
Cheshire Cat: Of course, he's mad, too.
Alice: But I don't want to go among mad people.
Cheshire Cat: Oh, you can't help that. Most everyone's mad here.
[laughs maniacally; starts to disappear]
Cheshire Cat: You may have noticed that I'm not all there myself.
Are you there yet?
Are you ready to finally pull out all your funds from banks?
Sell off all stocks/trades?
Perhaps even go on a labor strike with your co-workers and picket your State government?
Or are you just sitting there like a good sheeple?
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
-- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776.
fuck it. i am there. i am sick of these fucking chains. let's do it pal....
Other than pitchfork in front of a .gov building have 'been there' for quite some time. My choice was to buy gold/silver, though of course cash or some other items you choose to store the VALUE of your hard work is fine by me.
Keeping it AWAY from the Banksters is key imho.
C'mon ZH'ers, it is time to remove your funds and....
It's gonna take some kid to yell out: "But he isn't wearing anything at all!"
Because AIG IS the government, silly. Do a simple wikipedia search. Who founded AIG, what did he later do? Who was his successor? Connect dots as you feel are appropriate.
Because AIG has been a CIA-front since the second world war.
Seriously, read some history.
Errr.... didn't Marla do a story on this already?
spending freezes by obama and jobs stimulus money.
gads, shades of richard millhouse nixon.....
its simple george. the jews on wall street, don't want us to know just how bad we are getting fucked by them. yes sir,as paul harvey would say, that is the rest of the story....
Idiot
CDS, CDO's and this crisis by design
http://www.takeitbackday.org/Website_Summary.php Takeitback day operates on the principle that all politicians of both parties are corrupt to the core and the government has been captured. For any citizen to seek political advantage and one- ups- manship as this nation has been plunged into crisis is a betrayal of the country and it's future.Takeitbackday.org sends that message clearly. Quantification of the damage to unions , Boomers and small businesses and the middle class is only done by full Congressional investigation.Open hearings is the responsibility of the party in power. We're waiting. My Congressional Representative told me in front of the press on Sat.Jan 9th that "Speaker Pelosi won't let us talk about that". The moral high ground is only achieved by those who demand those hearings. Moral relativism is a thing of the 1970's.-- with the nation on life support or worse -- a luxury that cannot be afforded . Delay in full Congressional hearings is primary evidence that the Government has been captured by Banksters. "From 1998-2008, Wall Street investment firms, commercial banks, hedgefunds, real estate companies and insurance conglomerates made political
contributions totaling $1.725 billion and spent another $3.4 billion on
lobbyists -- a financial juggernaut aimed at undercutting federal
regulation." ...that's an average of one million $, per year, per politician
in bribes from the financial sector ALONE.

Do people demand a really just system? Well, we'll arrange it so that they'll be satisfied with one that's a little less unjust ... They want a revolution, and we'll give them reforms -- lots of reforms; we'll drown them in reforms. Or rather, we'll drown them in promises of reforms, because we'll never give them real ones either!!
DARIO FO, Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Ask/beg all you want, but you're not going to get it. Only two ways to change things:
1) Threat of violence (care to jump into the fire scarecrow?);
2) Walk away from it all, absolutely ZERO energy.
Violence never really works in the long run. Those engaged in violence are likely to become the new oppressors (ala Bolsheviks).
Isn't knowing what the FED is doing crucial to our national security?
If some terrorist org was rumored to be cyber attacking our currency issuing computers and lending our money to unknown people, wouldn't we enlist the CIA, NSA and every computer expert and spy we could find to try to find out what they were doing and how they were doing it?
What the FED is doing behind the curtain is likely of more potential economic damage than a MidEastern terrorist could ever dream to cause.
It is in our national interest to see what they are doing now...while that may hurt the banks, BANKS do not equal interests of US people. If it is scary info, so be it, lets face it like grown ups.
Is it better to ignore the rumblings and leaks in the dam so as not scare people by having work crews seen around the dam or is it worse to have a few people get trampled leaving the valley than to let them all stay without warning just before the dam bursts.
Bernanke, Geithner, Greenspan, Rubin, Summer, Paulson all thought/think they can defy the laws of gravity, and make a structurally deficient dam continue to hold water by spraying a thin layer of grout over the front of it. Also, they like to give their friends overpriced no bid contracts to do the "repair" work.
Either the dam is strong enough to hold or its not. If its not, nothing to be gained by not facing facts and evacuating valley below. We don't know when it will burst, but burst it must, today or in a year.
If we were really lucky our leaders would urge us to leave valley, open up the dam gates, and try to drain water behind dam as quickly as possible. If they had done it soon enough, they might have relieved the pressure before dam burst and people could be back in valley living their lives while dam was rebuilt. Sure, they'd be short on water and hydro power and rebuild would cost everybody, but better than death and destruction of the valley.
Instead our leaders tell us it's in our national interest to NOT know the condition of the dam upstream. B!#@$&%ds
Nicely said. I like the imagery. --Boris
J.S. Kim using the same analogy..sort of.

National security to make sure no one knows who the REAL terrorists are! Would the real slim Bernanke please stand up?!?!
It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.
Henry Ford
National Security is being invoked because the USA has been hijacked by a military/industrial/financial/Congressional complex – an expanded version of the one Eisenhower warned about. This is what’s in the water in DC that morphs ‘HOPE’ into a Blankfein bailout, as in I HOPE my naked CDS those idiots at AIG are counterparty pay off.
To know why, let's define national security.
Contrary to what is understood as national security, the definition is not the security of the nation. Rather, the definition is the security of those in charge. Knowledge is power. By stripping citizens of knowledge about the reality, those in charge remain secure.
No longer is oppression wielded by the edge of a sword; suppression of information instills fear, acting on in our best interests instills trust, and general veil of propaganda controls people far better than force.
GW - Simply put, the 1,000 pounders are squealing at the possibility of not only being weighed and returned to health, but that someone might actually look at what they are consuming and how before making their assessment. In that effort the inevitable response that any attempt to understand what is going on with these folks, or those of us that are their codependents will lead to mutually assured destruction gains in volume and vehemence.
Whatever else we attempt in our society we mustn't try and move 'em! Or so the refrain of those that are flailing & wailing goes.... As the concept of essential national security activities and the monies to support them grows by several fold. Meanwhile, our Navy cannot protect essential shipping from piracy, our Army cannot man a rapid deployment force worthy of the name and the strategic response warehouses in Diego Garcia are emptied of essential war fighting material because there is not enough room in the budget to replace all of the equipment that had been rendered inoperable during the ongoing wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.
If you can't see why financial statements are infinitely more dangerous than Nigerian spoiled rotten brats (with a $4million pad in London) with half-ass explosives at 30,000 ft then you should work for Homeland Security.
Posted from another thread:
The greatest technological innovation, made by both financial and legal engineers, over the last 100 years has been the development of semi-private, quasi-governmental agencies.
Appearing in the form of both the Fed & Fannie/Freddie, they have proven to be absolutely incredible devices for bypassing and escaping oversight from all visible branches of government.
But the best part of all is not that they aren't subject to government control, but that they still get to claim protection under national security! That means any potential prosecutions will be covered by presidential pardons.
Jeez, Skilling (Enron) was such a putz with his amateur level SIVs. No wonder he pulled a 20 year sentence - 1 for the crime and 19 for being so stupid. The way the game is supposed to be played is being demonstrated by the masters.
Agreed, about the GSEs...just welfare for their executives, they, like Wall Street, can take the upside of risk and have govt bail them out of downside. Fred and Fan are bad, with their using the "implicit" govt guarantee to undercut competition but Wall Street even worse, who expected AIG to have any govt guarantee, and yet AIG holders got better deal than Fan/Fred holders.
And worse than Wall Street, and worse than Fred/Fan, is the FED...undemocratic, private banking excutives in charge our currency and monetary policy...We actually know what Fred and Fan are doing, who they are lending to, who is getting rich from their abuses. Even if is not widely understood and reported in MSM, at least the info is right there in their reports, just a little double checking on the claimed quality reported is needed to know exactly what crimes are going on.
But the FED...what are they, a GSE? and what books do we get to see?
