Will The Great Firewall Of China Prevent Tomorrow's Beijing "Jasmine Revolution"?
What could possibly be the most important unreported news from the weekend comes out of China, where quietly Internet postings have circulated, calling for disgruntled Chinese to gather on Sunday in public places in 13 major cities to mark the "Jasmine Revolution" spreading through the Middle East. The postings, many of which appeared to have originated on overseas
websites run by exiled Chinese political activists, called for protests
in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and 10 other major Chinese cities. And while there has been some speculation this latest "social network" protest is nothing more than performance art, the Chinese authorities sure are taking it seriously: "The calls have apparently led the Chinese government to censor
postings containing the word "jasmine" in an attempt to quell any
potential unrest. "We welcome... laid off workers and victims of
forced evictions to participate in demonstrations, shout slogans and
seek freedom, democracy and political reform to end 'one party rule',"
one posting said." Just like surging prices (which however are either forcefully adjusted to not be reflected or eliminated entirely from the data stream) caused virtually all prior Chinese social revolts, will they succeed again? And more importantly, will China demonstrate to the US that the only way to prevent a 'twitter revolution' is to wrest control of the internet entirely? If so, how many days before Big Brother is actively scouring through every single 100Base TX for daily keywords of choice with HBGary patiently waiting in the corridors to unleash a destructive DDOS at a moment's notice?
From the AFP:
Protesters were urged to shout slogans including "we want food to eat," "we want work," we want housing," "we want justice," "long live freedom," and "long live democracy."
Chinese authorities have sought to restrict media reports on the recent political turmoil that began in Tunisia as the "Jasmine Revolution" and spread to Egypt and throughout the Middle East.
Unemployment and rising prices have been key factors linked to the unrest that has also spread to Bahrain, Yemen, Algeria and Libya.
Searches Sunday for "jasmine" on China's Twitter-like micro-blog Weibo ended without results, while messages on the popular Baidu search engine said that due to laws and regulations such results were unavailable.
Some Chinese Internet search pages listed "jasmine" postings but links to them were blocked.
The Chinese government has expended tremendous resources to police the Internet and block anti-government postings and other politically sensitive material with a system known as the "Great Firewall of China."
In a speech given Saturday, Chinese President Hu Jintao acknowledged growing social unrest and urged the ruling Communist Party to better safeguard stability while also ordering strengthened controls over "virtual society" or the Internet.
The stunning call for insurrection has caught so many off guard, some believe this is just some high powered attempt at artistic expression:
Activists seemed not to know what to make of the call to protest, even as they passed it on. They said they were unaware of any known group being involved in the request for citizens to gather in 13 cities and shout, "We want food, we want work, we want housing, we want fairness."
Some even wondered whether the call was "performance art" instead of a serious move in the footsteps of recent protests in Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Yemen, Algeria and Libya.
And just as China's ministry of truth is learning from the BLS, so the US department of full disclosure is rapidly doing all it can to take down whole section of the internet when and if it deems that acts of sedition have spread pervasively within US territories. Indeed, China is well ahead of the US here, and the seriousness and rapidity of the response indicates this is most certainly not a drill:
The call to protest was first posted on the U.S.-based Chinese-language website Boxun.com. "Boxun has no way to verify the background of this and did not participate," it said.
The Boxun site was unavailable Saturday, and reported being attacked.
"This is the most serious denial of service attack we have received," it said in a statement. "We believe the attack is related to the Jasmine Revolution proposed on Feb. 20 in China."
In the meantime, despite numerous RRR and interest rate hikes, Chinese prices continue to surge:
The ruling Communist Party is dogged by the threat of social unrest over rising food and housing prices and other issues.
In the latest price increase, the National Development and Reform Commission announced Saturday that gasoline and diesel prices would be raised by 350 yuan ($53) per ton.
Meanwhile, Shanghai became the latest city to place new limits on housing purchases to tamp down soaring home prices. Residents who already own two or more homes in Shanghai would be prohibited from buying more, while outsiders would be limited to one, Xinhua reported.
As reported previously, a roasted Chicken in Shanghai goes for $30.
Keep an eye out on Sino news tomorrow. If Chinese protests commence in earnest, then not even Bernie Bernanke will be able to find many new LPs willing to invest in the ponzi at this late hour...

Jasmine? They have already used jasmine in Tunisia...

Rothschilds stage revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt to kill Islamic banks in emerging North African markets.
puppets moving on the strings.......
should have known it all along. Its just too contrived and organized. I watched those so-called leaders on Al Jazeera one day and funny thing is, there they are on television talking and people are coming and going at the place and it is very busy and on top of all of that, it is supposed to be a "secret location" Oh please, you can't tell me the cops didn't know where they were at all times and also who they were. But the cops were told to lay off of them and just kill the useful idiots if they had to kill someone and also not worry about this Egytian Google executive who supposedly was somehow , someway suddenly a "leader" of the "revolution" Oh please, spare me. Watch them my friends and watch and learn and beware. One day it will be here and they will use the same process here to control any civil disobedience from the cattle. If you are in the street and suddenly people you don't know, arrive and start trying to lead anything and seem to be very organized, then you will know that they are agents of the enemy and traitors to the cause.
Interesting view, unfortunately it falls (for the most part) on deaf ears..
I'm so confused right now about what is going on that it's scary.. It's hard to believe a fucking word I read. Part of me thinks when the truth is revealed, it will contain elements I would have never suspected..
I find it interesting that Mubarak is in a coma. Also former President of Tunisia, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, is in a coma. Then we look back and we see former Prime Minister of Israel Ariel Sharon is still in a coma and former and late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, was in a coma before he died. It seems a lot of people go into comas sometimes. Hmmmm????
Also I think those Islamic banks that charge no interest , are a clear and present danger to jewish capitalism and banking systems.
Yeah... The coma thing is pretty interesting to say the least..
There is no doubt that Islam forbidding interest (although I've read they find ways around it) has much to do with the strife between east and west.
That being said, there are many more issues other than the Jewish invented lending system and monetary dominance. There is also oil, gas and minerals pursued by the U.S. Military that should be scrutinized as well.
Israel, Big Oil, and Military Industrial Complex have agendas that seem to fit each other like a sychronized swimming team. I would caution against singling out one without the other.

They still charge each other interest, they just don't call it interest. Same difference...
This is not a sign of strength on the part of chinese authorities but a sign of fear and weakness.
Globalization leveraged us into billions, (of humans), and it will deleverage us into millions.
Winners and losers? Dream on. This cake is baked, and anybody alive today that is not terminal will live to eat some of this "dessert" that has been a long time coming.
Everything will be "local" thirty years from now, (and not by choice).
I think they want to get rid of the useless eaters. One of the ways they do this is with GM foods. I also think they are attempting to get rid of all the honey bees too. No bees, no life. They poisoned the gulf of Mexico and now the seafood there is unedible. Etc etc.....
Go long roasted chicken.
I don't see much point in blocking 'jasmine' searches, given 99% of searches in China are in Chinese - I assume it is referring to the Chinese equivalent.
In any case, downtown Shanghai was as quiet as today. No extra police or anything in the streets.
And this site certainly isn't blocked. Getting through the firewall anyhow is about as difficult as ABC.

Attempt to defund Afghanistan war fund. House vote rejected by half the democrats (99) and nearly all the republicans except Reps. Campbell, Coble, Duncan, Johnson, Jones, Paul and Rohrabacher. Would have decreased funding to $10b, which is the amount the Pentagon said it would cost to withdraw troops.
Another $100b down the shitter.
Salve, Catullus, we're handing out that money left and right. We'll be spreading some in Kunar for civilian casualties at $2,500 per. Your dollars at work.

"As reported previously, a roasted Chicken in Shanghai goes for $30"
Anyone who knows any Chinese realizes that any chicken going for $30 would quickly (and brutally) be bargained down to $4. It is truly a sight to behold for us westeners...
Bingo. $30 is the price for westeners. $3 or less is for locals.
Meat is one of few things which prices do not go up. Most things are expensiver since money printers have kept busy since 2009. Inflation is unavoidable. However, hyperinflation seems still impossible.
let's guess that the local party officials get the best ones. comrade
Boston Market is $17 for a roast chicken before tax and that's pickup, though it does include sides - my guess is the BM bird is 30% smaller, so on an equiv basis maybe $25 for the same bird in America (and if you negotiate a bit with the store manager you could probably get a 10% discount)
i can buy a roasted chicken at the super for $6. how does BM stay in business, oh yeah i forgot, most of these consumer discretionary make earnings through financial engineering. and they used to think about ways to grow a bigger chicken.
i always wonderd what became of the chickens at the local super when they hit their best before date
at the end of the packaged meat counter, at my super, they put the items which are reduced because they are at the end date. mostly these are beef and pork, and chicken almost never, fish even less so. i notice that almost everyone checks that location to see what sort of bargain there might be.
i once worked in a store, years ago, and i think that grocery shelves now are more like vendor kiosks. not sure how much direct placement say foster farms does. do they stock their own, they probably take responsibility for pricing and old product. a whole uncooked chicken is 4 or 5 dollars, so they do a decent business on prepared items. do they simply transfer dated items, i really doubt it. my guess is that everything has it owns process, prepared, or marinated or whatever they might do, i think they always start with fresh.
As Chinese workers migrate further inland to seek higher paying job, competitiveness diminishes. The business model is very lucrative.
This model will manifest itself into another regions. In laymen terms..

Analysis of the Global Insurrection Against Neo-Liberal Economic Domination and the Coming American Rebellion – We Are Egypt [Revolution Roundup #3]
By David DeGraw, AmpedStatus Report
If you think what’s happening in Egypt won’t happen within the United States, you’ve been watching too much TV. The statistics speak for themselves.
...
.
As food prices increase, food stamps are obviously going to buy you less food. On top of that, as food prices escalate, millions more will need food assistance, right at the point when the current safety net can least afford it.
Let’s analyze the most recent food stamp data to see how America’s inevitable revolution may begin.
With 43.6 million Americans currently relying on food stamps, there are 13 states with over a million people already on food stamps:
States with over 18% of the population on food stamps:
In our nation’s capital, the District of Columbia, there are 131,611 people on food stamps, which is a stunning 21.9% of the population.
As mentioned before, cities with a poverty rate over 25% – Detroit 36%, Cleveland 35%, Buffalo 29%, Milwaukee 28%, St. Louis 27%, Miami 27%, Memphis 26%, Cincinnati 26% and Philadelphia 25% – are also highly vulnerable to revolt.
VIII :: The Empire State Rebellion
Given all the data, due to New York’s geographical lay out, population size and proximity to power, it is a prime candidate for insurrection. There are currently 2.9 million people living in New York that are on food stamps, which is equivalent to the entire population of Manhattan. Just imagine three million people flooding into lower Manhattan. Imagine if three million people decided to take a 15-30 minute subway ride down to the Financial District and camped out from Wall Street to the NY Fed, spilling over to the corporate offices of JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America.
Perhaps the one million people on food stamps from New Jersey and Connecticut will make a short trip into lower Manhattan as well, four million strong shutting down lower Manhattan, the economic capital of the world.
How would that play out in the global media?
One million people gathering in Cairo, Egypt sent shock waves throughout the world, and rightfully so, but just wait until millions of Americans begin flooding the streets. The revolution contagion will spread throughout the world like a category five hurricane.
The civilization may still seem brilliant because it possesses an outward front,
the work of a long past, but is in reality an edifice crumbling to ruin
and destined to fall in at the first storm.”
– Gustave Le Bon, The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind
Seems like that the more revolutions, riots, upheavals, ousters, etc.
U.S. Consumer stocks go up even faster!
Why is that?
Because as long as there is trouble brewing somewhere, The Bernank will be forced to keep interest rates low, regardless of booming commodities prices.
On top of that, the "institutional money managers" probably view the protests, riots, and coups as an opportunity for those countries to move even closer to embracing:
- "New Age" Fractional reserve lending (banks in these countries are still using old school methods)
- Securitization of auto loans and new mortgage loans (most people are still paying cash for big ticket items)
- More opportunity for the PigMen to seize upon yet another huge money making opportunity (exporting OTC Derivatives, and the Ponzi Pyramid Scheme to third world nations)
Heh, who would have known that the greatest financial collapse in 50 years would end up triggering an even greater expansion of credit worldwide, just a scant 2 years later?
Watch this.

Any move.toward democracy should lead to more attention paid to internal demand, plus instability elsewhere allows for more qe with minimal effects here as flight to quality ( compared.to egyptian clownbux) mitigates effects of qe on the usa
my question is 1) is HSA monitoring twitter accounts for key words?
2) suppose everyone used the word "Jasmine" in a mesage. I'm at the store, Jasmine.
LOL Jasmine
3) would that make their computer brain explode?
China has some pockets of resistance wanting freedom, but not enough of their 1.3 billion to make a big difference. But it's a start, and will make the elites nervous. If food becomes scarce and people start going hungry things can change fast.
BTW, Obama met with the key kill switch internet people this week. No doubt seeking a way to gin up the internet union movement, while angling to prevent an internet revolt against his own regime in Washington.
The FCC wants to register all IP providers, and private networks, and obtain a selective kill switch able to turn off certain networks and regions --- i.e., any opposition websites and regions. Fact is, they can lawfully do it now by declaring an emergency. But Obama wants to be able to do it quietly, without the drama and accountability and needs the FCC draconian proposals passed to do this. The house voted to defund the FCC plans this past week.
Along those same lines is if growth (because of falling exports) drops down around say...6-7% what are all those rural Chinese farmers to do that were brought in for cheap labor hoping to better their lives no longer have jobs?
I just read "Fuck the CCP" was one of the most popular internet expressions back in China back in 2009.
so go long food stamps?
