Will Julian Assange Make Brian Moynihan (Or Another Bank CEO) Resign?

Tyler Durden's picture

According to an advance preview of an interview with Julian Assange by the Times of London's Alexi Mostrous, the Wikileaks founder has announced that he has "enough material to make bosses of a major US bank resign." While this can be merely the latest step in the chess game between Wikileaks and Bank of America, with the former assumed to hold destructive material on the other, with the latter escalating last Friday and blocking all of Wikileaks payments, as we reported over the weekend, it may potentially hold some insight into just what material Assange has on either Brian Moynihan, or some other bank executive. On the other hand, keep in mind that the Times of London is the only newspaper which has recently instituted a paywall with unpleasant result: as previously reported the Times, has scared off its advertisers and readers in droves, so there is always the possibility that this is merely a publicity stunt along the lines of how the Guardian got its traffic to explode and kill its site several times during the original cablegate releases.

That said, the plan likely has worked, and the entire (at least financial) world will be tuned in to see just what details the Times releases tomorrow, although it is likely safe to assume that nobody's hopes are very high: after all, many wonder just what Assange is waiting for to release his latest docket of banking data. We can only hope our skpeticism has taken the best of us this time...

Perhaps this is just a semantic misunderstanding, but I read this as Alexi reporting that, per his interview with Julian, Julian has damning material.  I don't think this implies that the article itself will contain said damning material, only that it exists.  Which is old news, but typical of Times of London reporting.

I'm a big fan of wikileaks, because of what they release. Not what they say they have or what they say they might release.

If Assange is going to get big on talking about what they might have, or what they might do, maybe he should start a career in politiics.

Just release the damn bank info already!

Spot on. Just imagine taking on the world's most vicious empire - and doing it with such calm equanimity! They are asking for his head --- but are happy to exonerate the financial pirates as they strip out the country. Laws can be changed on a dime to let off the bilkers. Drones target 'suspects' and dispense with the need for trials. US 'worries' that 'lives can be put at risk'!!! Really? Not as many lives as are at risk through bombing stuff in other countries. When will the hysteria die down and US elites realize that he is exposing exactly what has been written by Americans??!! Yes, banana republic is too kind a description.

I think a lot of people have misunderstood this whole situation. Of course Assange probably doesn't have much, he is just playing the publicity to try and bait out the world and large government. This is a big game of cat and mouse. No one wants to be the target of large government in singularity, let alone deal with the type of hassles that is enjoyed in that position. However with this in mind, I also know that everyone enjoys a differing level of freedom. Not everyone minds being told what to do, for some of us this is a no option. We are going to do, what ever we are going to do within societal boundaries.

This idea actually seems quite contradictory, free within societal boundaries. Every individual has the right to live. Lines must be drawn, where does one's right end and societal rights begin? Who has the right to airwaves? If I own equipment that allows me to silence others voice, I own them. There are commons that must be shared. Getting the balance between human rights and societal rights is a slow process, often going forward three steps and back two. A reason why history is so important, we can take those two step backwards and remember take that third step forward.

Are we two steps backwards today? There are certain signs that suggest this may be the case. Wouldn't it be nice if there were definite proof? Martyr. Poke the beast, see if he rumbles, if he bites your head off than at least you know it is alive. Can you imagine, stick in hand, wondering if your about to lose your head?

If you are Assange, the best case scenario is if government backs off and he is allowed to keep releasing real information. Less glamorous, but a confirmation of a start of the revolution of minds. If you get eaten, you fought the good fight. Hopefully your story isn't by the wayside.Take note, watch this game of cat and mouse, these are interesting times.

Lies, lies, liesssssss.......

But this julian Assman drama, it get's more and more schtiky by the day.
It at least started out like a good Robert Ludlum story.
Now, it's like a tuppance thriller.

Watch them in the dock in a few months as this drama ushers in the new McCarthyism.

Would have worked better if he'd have started a weekly leak.  This creates a siege mentality wherein Moynihan wouldn't know what is next to be revealed.  This perplexes liars since they cannot control the event.  There is always the specter of another shoe to drop that they cannot control.  They could have even called it the WikiWeekly.  Oh well, by the time WikiLeaks does release this cache, it will be a non-event.

WikiLeaks: The Touchstone

Your reaction speaks volumes

by Justin Raimondo, December 17, 2010

WikiLeaks is a touchstone. Amid all the brouhaha and legal shenanigans engaged in by various governments – the Brits, the Swedes, the Americans – the prospect of having a web site devoted to spilling the secrets of the elites has brought out everyone’s true colors. To those truly devoted to liberty, it has evoked cheers; for those with other agendas, it has provided a target for their polemical arrows.

The Obama administration is reportedly getting ready to indict Assange under the terms of the Espionage Act, or some other hastily-passed legislation now being prepared by Senators Joe Lieberman and Dianne Feinstein, and this distinction between journalism and espionage is quite important: without it, the New York Times (which has led the pack in smearing Assange, by the way) would also be open to prosecution, since they published the cables after their release.

One’s response to WikiLeaks and its charismatic founder tells us more about the respondent than it does about the subject of transparency in government. Like a work of art, WikiLeaks evokes visceral emotions and brings out our true selves: "libertarians" (some of them) are outed as closet authoritarians, right-wing blowhards are exposed as libertarians at heart, and shameless hypocrites are impaled on a sword of their own making.

Not a good idea at all, IMHO.

The Times does need exclusives to get their paywall website up and running. I think they've got less than 50k subscribers in total and new sign-ups that aren't part of a free-trial deal are almost non-existent. Perhaps News International did a deal with Wikileaks, and if so I hope they scalped Murdoch for all his worth.

As for content, who knows? These Wikileaks publications are so huge - they're like the Bible - everyone can find whatever they want in the pages and interpret them according to emphasis and personal ideologies. Look, even with the Iraq war leaks we have all read the nutjobs defending the worst excesses of the war and rationalizing all sorts of atrocities. It'll probably be the same with the bank revelations until opinions are polarized between the people with accurate information and the people without (MSM). Man is not a rational animal. He is a rationalizing one.

Edit:

Sure, we're all impatient to see the leaks, and some even suggest Assange is nothing but a tease or a CIA plant (Plausible - I would be surprised if they haven't done their job and tried to turn him), but I for one will not criticize the only organization that will publish the efforts of whistleblowers to redress injustices. When the justice system, media, and elected lawmakers do nothing or even hamper the efforts of brave people who stick by their consciences and principles to bring the truth about the horrors organizations commit, we have nothing else left but Wikileaks. Sure ZH does its thing too, but Wikileaks is the only (big) game in town. Good luck to them.

Assange has clearly turned against his old masters. They no longer control him and we all know how this story will end. Maybe he will take a banker down first but he is headed to the dustbin of history after his 15-minutes of fame.

If the news was THAT big, then he would have released it by now...

Unless...the "Big US Bank news" is Assange's "insurance policy" to keep him out of prison...

Maybe that is why he has not released it yet.

I imagine Assange doesn't want to screw "the little people" for the holidays. Calling out BofA now, and if it truly IS as damaging as they are insinuating, then a lot of people could have a harsh (or more harsh) holiday than is currently bound by their finances. After the holiday, it's on like donkey kong.

It will be interesting to watch this all unfold into half truths, truths and fiction.

Yea looks like hes really going for the jugular..

"We don’t want the bank to suffer unless it’s called for," Mr Assange said. "But if its management is operating in a responsive way there will be resignations."

Guess what douche bag..they do deserve it and they arent acting in a "responsive" way..but if you had the info you say you do youd know that.
