Wisconsin Democrats Boycott Anti-Union Vote By Fleeing State

Tyler Durden's picture

The farce over the Wisconsin anti-union vote has just passed into the surreal. According to the AP, democrat lawmakers, who are firmly opposed to voting on the bill which is said to already have majority support, and who have been boycotting the vote by being absent from the state capitol, have now escalated and patriotically left the state. The reason is that while the vote can not take place without at least one Democrat being present, the police had been sent out earlier, with orders to sequester the democrats. The democrat response: run away. As the AP reports: "Senate Republicans can't vote on the bill unless at least one Democrat
is present. Police could be dispatched to retrieve them, but it was
unclear if they would have the authority to cross state lines.
" So to all who were expecting the latest iteration of members of the executive class to run away (with or without gold) to come from Africa or the Middle East, will be disappointed: it was in America's very own back yard.

From the AP:

A Wisconsin state senator says the 14 Democratic lawmakers who are boycotting a vote on a controversial anti-union bill have left the state.

Sen. Jon Erpenbach says the group wants to force negotiations over the Republican-backed bill, which would strip most public employees of their collective-bargaining rights.

Erpenbach told The Associated Press that he and his colleagues had left Wisconsin, but he would not say where.

He said the plan is to slow down the bill because it's "tearing the state apart."

We don't get what the big deal is here: just call Von Bernankestein's hot line and get him to deliver $10 billion, or trillion, it's all the same these days. These are the Chairman's favorite kinds of inbound calls. After all, the dollar needs all the help it can get to get to zero way ahead of everyone else. It is everyone's patriotic duty to go bankrupt and to demand bail outs from our money printing syndicate. Lastly, not doing so is racist.

This action by the Wisconsin senators with the "D" next to their names is more aptly described as cowardice.

Their job is to debate and then vote, not run away because they fear the results (ala the French military) !

Start by docking the senators pay and benefits.

lmao this is a bit surreal.  Soon in IL lawmakers will resort to humming loudly while a bill is brought to the floor, saying "I can't hear you"; followed by NY lawmakers declaring the capital floor is made of lava,

If that's so, since they surely will fall back on their CBA, then let the pink-slip party begin. Let's see how the senior rank and file, usually secure, react when 3/4 of their co-workers are kicked to the curb because they want to hold onto the Ponzi (municipal employee benefits) a little longer. My guess, junior members will get the "I'm sorry, good luck speech" and see you later...see how brotherly and sisterly the unions are with that.

jus, I think this demonstration is telling.  To the extent there is a civil disorder in this country, it will be led by the public employee unions joined in by the left wing anarchists, the "Seattlers."  We are Euro West.  We are not Egypt, Tunisia or the Middle East.  Those seemed to have been broad based uprisings, but started and led by the youth, and resulting from decades of repression and economic stagnation (at best).  Sadly, 98% of our youth are too distracted and focused elsewhere.  I ask my 20 year old daughter and my nieces and nephews why they aren't rioting or at least engaging in peaceful civil disobedience, and all I get are blank stares.  They aren't tuned in enough to what's happening to even explain their lack of action (I guess until they get fed up with tuition increases).  They don't known why they should be acting.  A few Tea Partiers may get stirred up (especially seeing the unions out there), but the numerous Tea Party groups aren't organized like the unions, many have been co-opted by the Republican Party, and most are a bunch of middle aged white guys with still too much to lose to risk stirring things up.  Give it time and this may (will) change, but for now we are just a poor imitation of Europe.

In all fairness, what does your 20 year old have to riot about? I'm presuming she is still in school, so everything is paid for. She hasn't had to pay her loan back, so she doesn't know how painful that can be. She doesn't (presumably) have a house or a kid, so those expenses aren't slapping her in the face. What life experience at 20 can she draw on?

Remember the youth don't have the same perspective/knowledge because of their age. Until they have a reason to get involved, they will remain unaware (for the most part).

@Confused.  Good point.  That's fair.  Of course, I would never encourage my daughter, nieces, or nephews to resort to violence.  It's a rhetorical question directed to them more to gauge their awareness of how the bankruptcy of the nation is going to effect them.  In another sense, they may just be sitting back and watching what a mess their parents and grandparents are making and knowing that they will have the last laugh in this Fourth Turning.

FYI, it appears this may be spreading to Ohio.

Actually, I'm a small business owner in healthcare, adjunct prof in anatomy at local juco, hate video games, have a doctorate and only serve because I love the comraderie with my brothers and sisters as well as love fixing radar in the Air NG.  Nice attempt at stereotyping me into your nice little angst covered box though.  Can't stand either political party but, more than that, despise unions.  Like I said, I will gladly get my teaching cert and take a science based teachers spot in a heartbeat.  Let the firing begin and some slot will open in our fine cheeseville.

What are the common goals you share with the Koch brothers who organized opposition to the unions? If this benefits the Kochs, how does this benefit you? Check your information source and determine as a public servant, if you think you would really have to stand in for prison guards striking or, if the message was a scare tactic to frighten senior dairy farmer widows. How many times have you gaurded prisoners since they obtained the right to organize in 1959?

Been thinking a lot about that. Probably will happen soon in IL, or at least threats will be made "if citizens don't want to pay..."

Next, Washington will allow state bankruptcies, after which municipalities will default. Just my opinion, but it would excuse all debt and preclude politicians from voting...so probably we can count on that happening.

Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Arthur: [grabs Dennis] Shut up! Will you shut up?!
Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!
Arthur: [shakes Dennis] Shut up!
Dennis: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help, I'm being repressed!

When the Texas Democrats did that over redistricting about 6-8 years ago, the Republicans used the police to tract them down, then got in legal trouble for using public funds for their own political ends, or something like that. In the end, redistricting passed.

Ask those 10,000 fireman, police, teachers, prison guards etc. what they think of Benutty's strategy to create a wealth effect via running up the markets with the primary dealers high frequency trading.  Only problem is the 10 % getting the wealth effect will not spend enough to help the WORKING AMERICAN FAMILIES. People do not mind sacrificing as long as EVERYONE sacrifices. Last I checked the banks gave out 144 billion in bonues again. The tax money should be returned to the pockets of the workers in america directly. All workers get an equal share, even the banksters. I just saw something on Bloomberg. It is just bad business to try to collect capitol to grow a company in a casino stock market. Keep going High frequency traders, you are destroying the goose that laid the golden egg.
