Wisconsin Democrats Boycott Anti-Union Vote By Fleeing State

Tyler Durden's picture

The farce over the Wisconsin anti-union vote has just passed into the surreal. According to the AP, democrat lawmakers, who are firmly opposed to voting on the bill which is said to already have majority support, and who have been boycotting the vote by being absent from the state capitol, have now escalated and patriotically left the state. The reason is that while the vote can not take place without at least one Democrat being present, the police had been sent out earlier, with orders to sequester the democrats. The democrat response: run away. As the AP reports: "Senate Republicans can't vote on the bill unless at least one Democrat
is present. Police could be dispatched to retrieve them, but it was
unclear if they would have the authority to cross state lines.
" So to all who were expecting the latest iteration of members of the executive class to run away (with or without gold) to come from Africa or the Middle East, will be disappointed: it was in America's very own back yard.

From the AP:

A Wisconsin state senator says the 14 Democratic lawmakers who are boycotting a vote on a controversial anti-union bill have left the state.

Sen. Jon Erpenbach says the group wants to force negotiations over the Republican-backed bill, which would strip most public employees of their collective-bargaining rights.

Erpenbach told The Associated Press that he and his colleagues had left Wisconsin, but he would not say where.

He said the plan is to slow down the bill because it's "tearing the state apart."

We don't get what the big deal is here: just call Von Bernankestein's hot line and get him to deliver $10 billion, or trillion, it's all the same these days. These are the Chairman's favorite kinds of inbound calls. After all, the dollar needs all the help it can get to get to zero way ahead of everyone else. It is everyone's patriotic duty to go bankrupt and to demand bail outs from our money printing syndicate. Lastly, not doing so is racist.

Be careful to separate private from corporate.  I think there's plenty of room for teachers to be paid a good salary.  Most teachers I've met work like dogs during the school year, most of it off the clock.  That generally makes up for the summers off which is undoubtedly sweet.  I'm not from Wisconsin, but in Florida that 35k sounds about right.  I knew a teacher who had 17 years in elementary ed and she made about 700/wk.  I was surprised when I saw her pay stub.

The free bennies on top of that are the sweetener that kills.  I do not begrudge a teacher 46K it is not an easy job.  The taxpayers cannot support a public sector of the size and expense we have let it become.  The math no longer works and most likely never did.

I've noticed for a financial information blog, math and logic failure in the comments is endemic.

Your own link indicates an AVERAGE salary, not a start. As compared to an industry that generally favors advanced education as well as continuing education, 46K for the average salary is pathetic. Perhaps check the average salary of a financial analyst or conservative lobbyist? Well, if they would dare allow it published anyway.

Teachers are the one thing we SHOULDN'T be beating up on. Office buerocrats and 3rd deputies to the the county PR Chairman can piss off. Park service backup snow plow logistics assistants who make 80K can as well.

You don't understand what you are talking about, but are fearless in expressing your mindless rage about it to anyone unfortunate enough to read it. Please go back to watching re-runs of Glenn Beck and being scared of Google and let those with something to contribute make better use of these valuable bytes.

You forgot to read the bennies on top of that are the problem, 46K is fair for the job.

Yeah, thats me scared of google, dance around a glen beck figurine with snakes speaking in tongues- mindless rage, blah, blah blah..

We can no longer afford a public sector of the size and complexity it has attained, help us fix it!

Thu, 02/17/2011 - 18:26 | 971981 antisoshal

I am helping fix it. First by illustrating the logic fail of the extremism thats fanning an unproductve fire: You attempted to dispell a claim of starting wages with a link disproving your own point. When I point that out you ignore it and claim the argument is about benefits. You cant steer your own intellectual car.

Secondly I'm helping fix it by pointing out that we CAN afford to and SHOULD pay teachers that much in salary and benefits, if not far more. It's amazing to me that free market wages and economics are only brought into play when they support a conservatist view of management and administratiron. We should pay those educating and shaping the productive populace enough that the best ones would WANT to be teachers. As it stands, like much of the public sector, we chum them and then wonder why the job barely gets done.

Government waste is NOT a function of the education system. Its a function of the constant pork barrel/patronage that results in ridiculously overstaffed and overpaid civil service arenas with back up back up snow plow painters, assistants to the assistants for chamber of commerce liasons and other such waste. The waste in pensions is absurd as well, but that fault is not solely on those recieving them. At almost every turn, they have been mis-managed and robbed by both republican and democrat, and the money used to solve problems that endagered their re-election. Pensions SHOULD have been self funding. Rape and Pillage by our fine elected officials and crime and mismanagement by the financial sector are as much if not more the cause of the pension problem. The real issue is that its easier to take it away than it is to FIX the ones who broke it.

Education, law enforcement, fire protection and a well maintained national guard are the requisits and foundations for a functional state society.

You simply have been indoctrinated to hate the boogey men you do and have the usual rhetoric to support it. I'm really not pro union and I see them having caused many of the problems in modern america. They served a valuable purpose, and like almost everything else they outgrew it and became something else. That said, you have no concept who your enemy really is. Usually that makes it yourself.

Had I been trying to dispel that claim I would have said "starting" you must not have noticed I did not say that.  I did start my point with average salary and stayed on topic you went back to starting wage so you would have a point to argue.   If we can and should pay teachers that much project a budget for WI, the citizens of that state do not agree, it is your point to prove, so prove it..

"Government waste is not a function of the education system"  You must be a teacher if you believe this claptrap.  Every area of Government is chock full of waste, they must spend their budget or its cut the next year, I have worked in Government and seen this practice with my own eyes.

The rest of your rant has no logical points that do not contradict themselves at least minimally.  Your attempting to paint others with your biased views of how society should be is tiresome and pedantic.

Go dance around your copy of the Nation.

Beware utopians they are always the most dangerous of our dreamers.

What do the terms "union" or "government" have to do with "free market"?  Another common mistake of those who don't really understand basic economics is that free market wages are not based on how important a job is...they are based on the supply of people willing and able to the work vs. the demand for that work.  No one (or not many) dispute the importance of teaching.  Good teachers also work very hard and care deeply for their charges.  There just happens to be lots of people willing to do that work.  Many are not good teachers, but the unions just need dues, er, bodies.

Greenspan should be in prison breaking rocks not receiving a medal. Due to his incompetence, collusion to make a ton of money or both, he has hurt this country worse than 9-11. He caused a huge misallocation of capitol into an industry that was not needed to expand. He should attend the vote in Wisconsin, he will be with his friends.

But when their cb rights are taken away they won't even be asked about the next round of cuts because they won't have the power to affect them.

I'm on the fence about this story, on one hand I don't wanna see working people exploited and abused, but on the other I think it just brings us one step closer to the reckoning that we so desperately need.  We could use a little anarchy to scare the shit out of Wall Street, K Street, and all the corrupt politicians in this country.  The politicians fleeing and the people revolting sounds good to me.

It shouldn't be called collective bargaining...  When the government is obligated to bargain with said union, the union is simply able to extort as much as possible with their demands.  There is no labor competition to keep it in check like in the private sector.

What a strategy, the vote not going your way then run and hide under the blankets until decocracy and the will of the majority has vanished completely.  Is that what the electorate will do in 2012 if it doesn't look like "our dear leader" will get re elected?  Do your job, do what you were paid and elected to do.  If you don't like the outcome then work to change the laws.  At least that's what the lawmakers tell the common folk when we start getting riled up and complaining.  What's good for the goose...I believe is the saying.  But I suppose if I have to choose between Sarah Palin and Barak Obama I will take a page from the cheese heads and head for the hills!

And that was how the second civil war started back in 2011, kids. Teachers and cops fought with taxpayers fed up with paying their high salaries and benefits. And the National Guard fought on the side of the cops and teachers, killing the citizens, who only wanted a fair shake.

That riled up the farmers, and the restaurant owners who wouldn't serve cops any more donuts, so the cops shot 'em in cold blood.

Eventually, the taxpayers, or common folk citizens got out their guns and gave 'em a whippin' and a good one. It all started in Wisconsin, but it spread to Illinois, and New York and in New Jersey, gangsters killed bankers with help from sweat shop seamstresses.

The politicians headed for the hills where they would be rounded up by grumpy old hermits and mountain men and cornholed til they bled out.

And they strung up the heads of the biggest banks and the government right at the top steps of the Capitol in Washington, DC. Some said it was ghoulish and horrible, but most people said those evildoers deserved it.

And that's why we still have a Union of States called America. It was close, and a lot of good people died, but we got things back in order, eventually.

If they mounted a head of a democrat on the wall of the capitol, would that stop this sort of problem in the future?  Seriously, Article 4 Section 4 of the Constitution guarantees a Republican form of government.  That is a government in which the rights of the individual is paramount.  Including property rights.  Property rights DO NOT EXIST when anyone, including government, can take personal property AT WILL as in direct income taxes.  When a government can take from one and give to anouther, this is what we get (people demanding your money).  Article 4 Section 4 GUARNTEES PROPERTY RIGHTS (money is your property too), yet everyone in the country ignores this fact.  Today, we have a decocracy, and the founders warned us about Democracies.  Read the constution and the federalists papers (10).

Why Isn't Wall Street in Jail?

Not only that, but now teachers and some unions are but the first of the "state" workers who have to pay the price, as a part of making the bankers whole in collusion with their Uncle Ben.

We may not get our "Egypt" for America, but maybe we can have fifty of them in every state.

The comments here suggesting that the affected public unions are the little guys and asking why don’t those evil lawmakers pick on somebody their own size like the bankers, are misplaced.

First of all, someone, starting even in Madison, Wisconsin, needs to support the victims of this grinding union-contract machinery that will shut down every state house in America and bankrupt its taxpayers.  Yes, the big guys deserve an attack that by rights should be underway by the lawmakers assigned that task—the United States Congress.  At least Wisconsin lawmakers know the area of their responsibility: to stop the hemorrhaging of public money into the pockets of grossly overpaid public employees.

Take my neighbor, for example—a public employee who retired three years ago at the age of 52 and is pulling down $200,000 in salary (with a guaranteed annual 3% COLA) with full health benefits for himself and his wife--for life.  I seldom see them, of course; they are constantly traveling... while I am constantly working...

My cousin just finished her first year as a public grade school teacher in a working class town: she is guaranteed 100 percent salary pension when she retires, full health benefits when she retires, and an ongoing IRA that is guaranteed an annual 2 percent profit by the state, no matter how deep the loss, with no limits on the profits.  When she attends a teacher’s meeting or workshop, she receives overtime pay even if on week days; when she has to take another teacher's students into her classroom for a day, she is paid an extra $50 a head.

She can "retire" after 25 years.

Are you kidding me? Happens all the time in IL. Had a small township superindentent here, headed up a school of maybe 800 students. When he retired he pulled in almost 300k in salary alone. Retired at over 200k a year+ all the sweet benefits he could suck from the teat. This is SMALL town IL. Take a look at the champion.org, for all the good info on IL. Maybe you'll stumble across the high school English teacher, who's pulling down 650000+ in Chicago.

Question: Why didn’t the taxpayers turn out en masse to support the bill and confront the pro-union protesters?

Answer: the taxpayers have a hard time skipping work to protect their interests, unlike the teachers and their programmed students… Madison Schools were closed for the second day in a row as teachers called in sick and students skipped classes.

If you want to know where the teachers are, take a look at the streets surrounding the Wisconsin state capitol—demanding their money…oops! demanding your money.

Today, I was forwarded an email from the WI Teachers' Union.  They equated newly-elected Walker and his "Draconian, Tyrannical Union-busting tactics" to Hitler...HITLER!  Oh yes, this is exactly what Hitler did to the Jews and Poles just before policing them into the Krakow Ghettos for genocide.  Yes, Hitler forced the Jews to pay 5.8% to their retirment pention funds and 12.3% towards their health care insurance.  Oh yes.

From Scott Walker vs. Public Sector Unions by Stephen F. Hayes (The Weekly Standard)

February 17, 2011 --
”Walker is unapologetic. These are difficult times. Wisconsin is facing a budget crisis. And there have to be cuts. Walker believes the changes he’s proposing are relatively modest. “I’m asking them to contribute 5.8 percent of their salary to their pension – right about the national average for contributions. And I’m asking them to pay 12 percent of their health care premiums – up from 6 percent. The national average is around 25 percent."

“So Wisconsin’s public employees will still have benefit plans more generous than most workers across the country. And these steps are being taken with the express purpose of avoiding major layoffs and dramatic paycuts. But the unions don't like it.

“… What’s more, Wisconsin teachers pay as much as $1100 each year in compulsory union dues. If the legislation passes, they will no longer be required to pay those dues – returning that money to their own pockets.”

If Wisconsin's pensions are run like other states', the governor is using and will continue to use them as a piggybank to fund cronyism, fraud, waste, and social engineering in the government.  If the pensions are already being stolen and in danger of being cancelled, why the fuck would any sane person agree to contribute any percentage of their salary to them?

Luckily, New York is not likely to have such problems now.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in unveiling his budget plan on Thursday, summed up New York City’s financial health with a phrase scarcely heard in the halls of government these days: “It’s good news.”

While other cities and states grapple with calamitous?? balance sheets and mass layoffs, Mr. Bloomberg proposed a $65.6 billion spending plan for the next fiscal year, about the same size as the current budget. But the city expects $49.9 billion of that will come from its own coffers, an increase of 12 percent.

And even as other governments have fallen into deep financial holes, the city’s forecast for tax revenues has increased by $2 billion since November, making the draconian cuts many city workers had feared unnecessary.

“We are in a much stronger position than most because we have planned ahead,” his honor said. “I’ve always been optimistic about New York.”
