World Health Organization Says Cellphones Cause Cancer ... Oh, And They're Killing Off the Bees As Well

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

The World Health Organization just issued a report stating that cellphones are "possibly carcinogenic to humans".

Specifically, WHO found "an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use".

The
WHO report notes that a previous study showed increased risk with
increased cellphone use, and recommends taking actions - such as using
hands-free equipment - to reduce exposure to the electromagnetic fields
produced by cellphones.

pr208_E

CNN points out:

The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

***

The
type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing.
It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave
oven.

"What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is
similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the
brain," Black said. "So in addition to leading to a development of
cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like
cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we
hold our cell phones."

***

Results from the largest
international study on cell phones and cancer was released in 2010. It
showed participants in the study who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the
rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor. To date, there have been no
long-term studies on the effects of cell phone usage among children.

"Children's
skulls and scalps are thinner. So the radiation can penetrate deeper
into the brain of children and young adults. Their cells are at a
dividing faster rate, so the impact of radiation can be much larger."
said Black of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Manufacturers of many popular cell phones already warn consumers to keep their device away from their body.

It should be noted that WHO's findings are not strictly limited to cellphones. Specifically, the report discusses:

radio frequency electromagnetic fields, such as those emitted by wireless communication devices.

As such, the WHO report may give ammunition to those who oppose non-essential rf em fields, such as California residents who oppose the installation of "smart meters" by the local power company.

The
smart meters wirelessly beam electric usage information to the power
company. The utility installed the smart meters on all customers' homes
(without their consent) in order to save the cost of having workers
manually check electric meters.

For those who are surprised that an electromagnetic fields can affect the human body, you are behind the times. As I noted last month:

It
is well-known that humans and animals have many electric currents
inside of us, and that we interact with electric fields and electric
currents outside of our bodies. For example, the pumping of our hearts
is driven by an electrical system, and EKGs measure the electrical activity in our heart:

The
[EKG]works mostly by detecting and amplifying the tiny electrical
changes on the skin that are caused when the heart muscle "depolarizes"
during each heart beat.

Electrocution can kill by disrupting the heart's electrical system.

Our brains are also largely electrical systems, and EEGs measure electrical activity in our brain:

Electroencephalography
(EEG) is the recording of electrical activity along the scalp produced
by the firing of neurons within the brain.[2] In clinical contexts,
EEG refers to the recording of the brain's spontaneous electrical
activity over a short period of time ....

Both EKGs and EEGs use sensors on the outside of our bodies (on the skin) to measure electrical activity occurring inside our bodies.

Some
animals can directly sense electric currents and electric fields of
their prey, or produce electricity to stun or kill their prey. As
About.com notes:

Electric
fields are used in numerous ways by animals. Electric eels and some
rays have modified muscle cells that produce an electric charge strong
enough to shock and sometimes kill their prey. Other fish use weaker
electric fields to navigate murky waters or to monitor their
surroundings. For instance, bony fish and some frogs have a lateral
line, a row of sensory pores in the skin, that enables them to detect
electrical current in water.

The California Academy of Sciences points out:

Sharks are almost as precise as the best physics laboratories in the country when it comes to sensing tiny electric effects.
They can use this "sixth sense" to find food and even mates, since all
living animals create their own electric fields. When a fish swims, or
even moves its gills, it creates a change in the surrounding electric
field that sharks can detect ....

There are many other examples of our interaction with electromagnetism.

Bad for the Bees

Cellphones aren't just potentially hazardous to us.

As Digital Trends recently reported:

Researcher
Daniel Favre of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology has found
that wireless signals cause honeybees to become so disoriented that
they finally just die. [Link] Favre’s team conducted 83 separate experiments that tested bees’ reactions to a nearby cellphone.

The team found that honeybees made 10 times the amount of noise when a
cell phone made or received a call than they did when the phone was in
off or standby mode. As Fast Company
reports, this noise (generally known as “worker piping”) usually
signals the bees to leave the hive. But when the reaction is triggered
by a cellular signal, the bees just became tragically befuddled.

So, what about a cell phone signal makes bees suicidally crazy? As
Favre’s report explains: “Worker piping in a bee colony is not frequent,
and when it occurs in a colony, that is not in a swarming process, no
more than two bees are simultaneously active…The induction of honeybee
worker piping by the electromagnetic fields of mobile phones might have
dramatic consequences in terms of colony losses due to unexpected
swarming.”

It’s the “dramatic…colony losses”
part that everyone should be concerned about. Honeybees are responsible
for pollinating about 70 percent of the 100 or so crops on the entire
planet that humans use for food.

So-called “colony collapse disorder
among the world’s bee population has been recorded since 1972. But it
wasn’t until 2006 that the drop in the bee population took a nosedive,
with beekeepers noting a 30 to 90 percent loss of their bee colonies,
up from 17 to 20 percent in previous years.

Favre’s study corroborates a 2008 report that showed that honeybees
would not return to their hive when a cell phone was placed nearby,
which sparked the theory that wireless signals are the problem.

(There are a number of other reasons bees are dying, as well.)

Bluetooth headsets pretty much eliminate the (alleged) cell-phone-near-the-head-causing-cancer problem.

World Health Org, same people who believe AZT, perhaps the most lethally poisonous chemical ever adopted as a medical drug, would cure AIDS.  Guess they view poisoning a patient to death (rather quickly too) as curing.

These "health" organizations are dangerous to your health. They're staffed by people so horribly brainwashed they're insane.

This drivel is a new low for (G)utless (W)imp.  If it doesn't provoke TD to revoke his contributor privilege, it would appear TD cares nothing about the integrity of ZH.

FYI - Seems like this is the first step in being able to regulate cell phones. You know, like if there is a demonstration (say against a government) and too many people (obviously terrorist insurgents) are in an area on their phones (filming police with nightsticks helping people move along), they may have to be shut down for everybodies one's (to keep police action from being misinterpreted) and save people from cancer!........

I did some guerilla gardening in my town after I bought some 1/2 pound mixed prarie flower seed bags on ebay. I went on a mission in September and seeded all the rough weedy bits around near where I live....haha you would not believe how it looks this year....At least 15 sorts of flowers including foxgloves, poppies, giant daisies and those big purple-ball fellas you see in churchyards......and not a weed in sight!! I think I have actually discovered a natural weed killer.....guerilla planted prarie flowers!

And you should just see the veritable bee-fest that is now going on in them!!

Simple pleasures eh!!

Cheers!

So let's see, according to TPTB:

  1. Tepco, emitting terabequerels of > 5,000,000 eV gamma rays: well, we don't know, nobody has died from it yet as far as we know, and it's OK as far as we know (shutting down monitoring stations)
  2. Your cellphone, emitting < 0.1 W of electromagnetic radiation at 0.000008686009039 eV: ZOMGRUNHIDEWEREALLGONNADIE!!!1!1eleventy!1

Yeah, that's the ticket.

And as for the bees, kindly disregard those agricultural tanker trucks with the hazard logos on the back. They have nothing to do with it, really...

It's very simple physics.  Cell phones are 500mW electromagnetic energy emitters ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBm ) just like this laser is a 500mW electromagnetic energy emitter ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=680xwwEs7Lg ).  Energy deposition affects matter.  Your brain is made of matter.  Just because you can see lasers because they are in the visible part of the spectrum and you can't see radio waves because they are in the non-visible part of the spectrum doesn't mean they don't have an effect.

Thanks for the post GW.

Another little tidbit about EM fields that might have health implications: (from Guide to Electronic Measurements and Laboratory Practice, 2nd ed. by Stanley Wolf, p. 42)

"Note that there is also an important relationship between the frequency of the applied current and the minimum current required for fibrillation. [of the human heart] As bad luck would have it (or as Murphy's law dictates), the condition of maximum human susceptibility to electric charge effects occurs at about 60 Hertz, the common power line frequency. At higher frequencies the susceptibility to fibrillation decreases rapidly because such high-frequency current changes direction faster than the heart tissue can respond."

I don't have a cellphone and I don't live near cell towers or high tension power lines, but hey, I'm just a paranoid tinfoil hatter. </sarc>

I do find it rather remarkable that so many people blindly accept official pronouncements of safety with little to no skepticism, given these devices have essentially zero historical track record and very few epidemiological studies. I'm surprised none of the trolls have come out trying to say cell phone radiation is good for you, but I do expect to see it.

This only applies to electrical current running through your body (e.g.when you put your tongue in the electrical socket) and has nothing to do with EM fields coming off power lines.

This is real people. Stop joking it off. Cellphones are low power microwave ovens. Same frequency, less power = longer time before things get cooked but they still get cooked.

My wife has a friend who was always ALWAYS on her bleeding cellphone. She scored herself a brain tumour RIGHT where her cellphone antenna sat beside her skull.

Limit your kids cellphone use to bare minimum, or get them handsfree kits.

According to physicist Bernard Leikind in a technical article in Skeptic magazine (Vol. 15, No. 4), known carcinogens such as x-rays, gamma rays and UV rays have energies greater than 480 kilojoules per mole (kJ/mole), which is enough to break chemical bonds. Green-light photons hold 240 kJ/mole of energy, which is enough to bend (but not break) the rhodopsin molecules in our retinas that trigger our photosensitive rod cells to fire. A cell phone generates radiation of less than 0.001 kJ/mole. That is 480,000 times weaker than UV rays and 240,000 times weaker than green light!

OK then, seroiusly....
Would tin or aluminum foil hats make things better?
Well to answer my own question since I'm the only one equipped to do so, a study funded by the American Tin Foil Hat Council says that by wearing a tin foil hat 24/7, you could probably decrease the risk of brain cancer by some 70%, the risk of getting a bee sting by 300% and extend your life by about 20 years.
Now, there were admittedly some short cuts taken in the study.  One was that nobody was willing and able to wear a tin foil hat for any extended period of time and in any case, those that did try had to wrap their heads in duct tape to keep said chapeau on said la tete.  Moreover, it was thus somewhat difficult to properly engage a blind test, for even Stevie Wonder figured out he probably looked like a twit with a tin foil hat.
So, being like it is today, if bees and cell phone users wore tin foil hats, thing's probably be just A-OK.
Which brings me to my next question.  Would tin foil hats protect us from HAARP?

It's been known for sometime that heavy cell phone users have a [much] greater chance of developing brain tumors - that was established with 1 G cell phones.  Now we have 3G & 4G cell phones that emit much greater amounts of energy AND many tweens are using them for hours every day.

So, the outlook for [another] major public health crisis in 10-12 years, devastating another generation, is coming.  Devra Davis wrote an excellent book on the subject and has a web site with a lot of the information.  IF you have a child or young friend or relative you care about, sharing the tips on safer useage is an act of kindness, even if it is ignored.  Parents should take this seriously.

Bottom line, use a Bluetooth whenever possible, or the speaker phone when situation permits.I would definitely limit the use and earphone contact on the youth, esp up till age 16-18.

Whether they do or not, it just makes sense to keep the receiver as far away from your master control center as possible, why take the chance.

As for the Bee's, no doubt it is/has been a serious issue for several years.

The Cell phone causing the issues,I would have to witness the action one had on a hive before I believed that.
