Zero Hedge's Anonymity Policy
Friday being a slow news day, stories going around today purport to identity one of Zero Hedge's contributors. Ironically, each piece seems to reference another media outlet as a source in an interlocking circle of recursive reference that boggles the mind.
This, by our very rough count, is the fourth widespread rumor floating around purporting to identify a Zero Hedge contributor or staff member. As a matter of policy, Zero Hedge does not comment on the identity of the nearly 40 contributors of staff members that constitute our little family. Now does, however, seem an opportune time to remind readers to read our manifesto, our full-disclosure policy, "How To [Read/Tip Off] Zero Hedge Without Attracting The Interest Of [Human Resources/The Treasury/Black Helicopters]," and 1-2 and Marla Singer's missive on "The Financial Media."
Zero Hedge contributors and staff are not so narcissisticly married to fame that we find it necessary to take credit for our content. Nor do we believe that any amount of author reputation is (or should be) able to prop up a bad piece. We credit our readers with the requisite intelligence and skepticism to do their own fact checking and assign their own credibility ratings to our content. We cannot say the same for many of the other "financial journalists" out there.

I particularly don't like the implication that there is more than one contributor using the byline Tyler Durden. Having read inconsistent statements on several issues between the different Tyler voices makes it hard to grasp the credibility of any of them. Remember, you may keep talking about facts, but most of the content is really opinions, and the same facts can be used to reach different conclusions by different people.
If you guys don't care about having one voice that's fine, but at least use other aliases besides Tyler Durden, especially in your "front page."
And as I keep saying here, there are no secrets.
I fail to concur. Are you dense, or simply unable to understand written English?
The first clue is 'Tyler Durden' - just in case you missed it. Anonymity, multiple people posting under the same nom de plume, etc. is part of the gig here. If that bothers you then you're missing the point.
The gig here didn't become obvious until recently, and even today is not obvious to people who casually read this site. The "Tyler Durdens" have different knowledge, different personalities and even different perspectives. What's wrong with each having their own alias?
I find it interesting that in this time of unprecedented and incalculable fraud and robbery at all levels of government and Wall Street that FINRA is spending it's time investigating some gentleman who made a $768.00 profit on a trade by buying 1000 shares of some stock at $4.75 and selling it for $5.30.
Are you freaking kidding me?
Is that really where the "watchdogs" are at?
Is this an appropriate use of taxpayer resources? Madoff anyone?
How would such an insignificant thing even get on FINRA's radar screen?
Something is not quite right with this story.
... sounds like helicopters. UN helicopters.
here, here!
Sickening to think of all those people Madoff scammed....and even when Markopolis (sp?) directed them to the scam they still didn't (or chose not to) see it.
Then of course there are all those who stupidly invested in that offal known as "mortgage-backed securities" --- who was watching that henhouse?
We're all fucked. It's all rigged. and now? Market Rally?? "the first rule of the ponzi scheme: gain the mark's trust."
Well, September 2008 was a slow time for the regulators.
TD, Marla, Andy, Ray,Bruce, PM, RoboT, i have only two quotes for you and the entire ZH staff
" Don't get too cocky my boy. No matter how good you are don't ever let them see you coming. That's the gaffe my friend. You gotta keep yourself small. Innocuous. Be the little guy. You know, the nerd... the leper... shit-kickin' surfer."
"Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon."
Cheeky, thank you! :-)
"His name was Henry Paulson .."
The real Tyler Durden.
It sounds like a counterintelligence move, shake the tree and see what falls out.
Charlie Charlie Charlie........ He is shown to be a fraud and a hypocrite and now leaks information to try and discredit others. Guess Charlies "reporting" is taking on a whole new form. Oh and is Denise Neale going bye bye (If so he can go on and say 'look they are calling me denise how clever'...that one is for u Dennis and cya)?
Ah, the allusions, and predictions of Ender's Game never cease to amaze.
I was just thinking the EXACT same thing yesterday. Wonder if the ZH crew also liked the book. And if there is a counterpoint to ZH as was "Demosthenes" to "Locke". Or would ZH be "Demosthenes" in this case...? This meta-meta-meta sh%t gets confusing after a couple of derivatives...
Hedgehogs vs foxes?
I am Sparticus... er.... I.... I.... mean, Tyler Durden....

I am Tyler Durden. Well, I would be if I knew the first damn thing about finance. As it is, I'll just comment as, well, me.
I am surprised to learn that there are as many as 40 contributors. TD must do a ton of rewriting from that variety of source material, because the voice of his/her posts is extremely consistent.
I guess they think you're a joke.
OK...Tyler...Marla....and the rest of you.
Time to get the shirts out.

ZH is getting props in the comments over on Naked Capitalism
CNBC just keeps digging their own grave while doing their little victory laps
>>Is that really where the "watchdogs" are at?
The watchdogs must give the appearance of doing something useful, so they drag small-time (VERY small-time) offenders in for review but let all the big fish do whatever the hell they want.
To the TD that posted the Guide to the Credit Crisis, Trader, various CRE missives, and illuminating us all on HFT and flash trading... Thanks!
To the TD that posts letters from redneck attorneys, Cliff Asness, and others that raise the hackles of the armchair libertarians... No Thanks, but don't stop. Its what makes the site great
According to my sources TD is Dick Grasso...

Ritholtz picked it up too:
The Zero Hedge backlash begins: BLOGGER MAY HAVE A PAST My assumption was that everyone had a past — and a present and future too, but my bias is due to my existence in 4 dimensions.
We all know that the MSM is one-dimensional, two at best, hence their constant confusion I suppose.
I have a past too I am Tyler Durden.
TD and the gang, you receive the most flack when you are over the target.
Keep up the work.
Someone is getting nurrrrrrrrrevouuusssssssss
The funny thing is, when you click on the NY Post article, it gives an ad for...
.... INGLORIUS BASTERDS! :)
Too right.
This is great free publicity for zero hedge. It doesn't matter what they say about zero hedge. As long as they spell the name zerohedge.com correctly, it's all good.
George Orwell
Zero Hedge is the ONLY voice in the wilderness that calls attention to the massive stock manipulation going on in this market, and attempts to make sense of the ‘shell game’ going on with the toxic assets. Two areas where CNBC is sorely lacking. I for one, don’t care what checkered past any may have, as long as they keep serving the cause of truth and keep fighting all the ‘firkin’ corruption that is going on.
And regarding any checkered past, CNBC has got to be kidding, right? Cramer was caught on tape, giving lessons on how to manipulate the stock market while an employee of CNBC, in a position most suited for his ‘moonlight career’ as bastard extraordinaire.
Amazing as well, is that Gasparino even has a job, after he has ‘tanked’ the market on several occasions (shades of chicanery). For instance the Goldman “secret meeting” incident -LOL - That one reeked of insider trading, though perhaps not provable, but it did send, Charley on “THE” retraining furlough, where he arose a new "gold" man.
And finally, would someone please explain to these loons the difference between a “Blogger” and the general comments from us in the peanut gallery? That grandmotherly ‘glazed look’ they get is a little disconcerting.
Well, there's Matt Taibbi, too. At least to a certain extent.
But yeah, beyond ZH and MT ... wilderness.
I am very relieved, it increases your credibility of not being part of the system and decreases the NY Compost credibility (if the story is true, I am very cynical).
This means at least one writer is not with Goldman Sachs (a very good thing), is a target of the financial system (going after a small fish on a trumped up charge), has a chip on his shoulder over the fiasco and will exact revenge (hooray!).
Of course this whole site could be a clever co-opt campaign of controlled opposition, but if you continue to hit them in the mouth on the largest fraudulent activities we will know you are legit.
It has been a good run, but it is only a matter of time now before zero hedge's ID will be outed. Too much pressure to ID, and human beings are tragically by nature unable to maintain any sense of principal and/or honor, if the price is right. The more zero hedge speaks the truth, the more the pressure builds to ID intensifying their attack on your flank until they are within the wire. I would think to ID now or risk being discredited. The question now becomes how to sustain your principles after being Identified. Keep up the good work.
Seinfeld could do a show about you. The blog nazi. No more zerohedge for you !!!!
And because I hate hypocrites, censors, and fakes:

I really don't have the time for this so I'll let someone else take it over. See, now you've created a cottage industry.
Tyler Durden is Bernie Madoff blogging from his prison cell.
Apparently, Madoff's only crime was to veer from the acceptable form of ponzi scheme, to the unacceptable, freelance version of the same thing.

Doesn't matter to me who "you all" are / or what you have or haven't done yesterday or last year or ten years ago . By the content you write its obvious you are professional and qualified . Insiders on very neat market shennanigans . Good work , keep it up !! Blast away !!
it's obvious from the writing style that "Tyler Durden" is multiple people.
Fine example of communitas this is. As Chuck Palahniuk puts it,

CNBC talks about insider trading and has their "aha!" moment re TD?
Perhaps you "journalists" at CNBC can do a little research and find the many videos of your Cramer admitting market manipulation and other jailable offenses. Maybe you can get an exclusive when the SEC makes the little man do a Perp Walk and sends him off to get a daily buggering at Rahway.
Also, I believe in at least 37 states it is a crime to impersonate a journalist, so I would guess about 95% of you Mouthing Heads over at CNBC (nobody except for shut-ins actually turns on the sound unless Faber or Santelli is speaking) are about to be indicted. Better get your affairs in order. Or maybe I haven't seen it and you are running the same disclaimer that preceeds Jon Stewart's Daily Show: "the reporters are not journalists, the stories are not fact checked, the opinions not well thought out". That might save you.
It must really hurt when a poorly funded, rag-tag operation comes out of nowhere and trounces the self-proclaimed "First in Business Worldwide", the bastard child of yet another failed financial institution (who took down a great manufacturer) that continues to exist merely because of taxpayer largesse. I would think that you lot would be embarrassed to cash your paychecks, or you would if any of you had a modicum of integrity or pride. And if you were in Japan, you would all do the honorable thing and lay the white cloth down at your knees, pick up the sword and...
Hey Dennis, How's that recovery going?
Dear Tyler and the rest of the ZH crew,
This is bar none the best source of financial information anywhere on the web. Not only for the unique angles and analysis of the usual stuff but also for the story selections. You chose topics the other guys wouldn't touch and you told the truth. That takes huge, brass ones.
That said, you've stomped on some powerful toes. The MAN doesn't like what he sees in this corner of cyberspace. Having Rupert Murdoch, GE, and Goldman Sachs as enemies is obviously not easy feat. The Establishment is retaliating. Watch out for the Gasparinos, the Canadays, and the random hit from anywhere in Murdoch-land. I like what this blog does and we need to start up more of these fight clubs. We need more anonymous space monkeys.
I hope you understand that the information in that article was probably not had through "investigative journalism". Often times, companies hire private investigators and then "release" the findings to journalists in need of cash / stories. That little line regarding "last known" address is exactly spook speak.
I hope you understand what you are up against.
ZH is what the Federalist Papers used to be...
ZH -- if they're after you you are doing something right.

Goldman Sachs is obviously piss scared of Zero Hedge since they are planting these kinds of stories with their buddies at NY Post who are well-known for being barely better than a tabloid.
His name is Robert Paulson.
His name is Robert Paulson.
John Reid, a Texas Ranger, was the sole survivor of an ambush by the Butch Cavendish Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. Reid was nursed back to health by an Indian named Tonto. After recovering from his wounds, Reid set off, with his trusty companion, Tonto, to avenge the deaths of his colleagues and, ultimately, to wipe out crime wherever he found it. Each episode closed with The Lone Ranger riding off into the wilderness shouting a hearty, "Hi Ho, Silver, away!" and leaving townsfolk wondering "Who was that masked man?!"
After they cancelled his show, Tonto got Jimmy Durante to enable the rest of the crew and the line "Everybody wants a get inta de act!" developed into a glory hole for fierce commentary in the financial fiasco de jour known here as ZH....most TV viewers are not ready for the truth, and that's not the stuff that sponsors are buying. Quite the opposite.
The fact that I comeback here every other hour means I dont care a tiny rat's A** about MSM or its cohorts.
Hello all TD's!
I work on the trading floor in Chicago. We have CNBC on the Jumbo-tron all day(Except for Skilling's weather forecast at 12:35!) As you know Santelli b'casts from there. I see him on smoke brakes all the time. He is a regular guy...takes the train etc. Anyway when I saw Gasbagarino say "Zero Intelligence" I blew a gasket(which i do often, while catching the 'tout' for a few slow minutes) What an ignorant asshole. And that chick with the tits, she isn't that good looking and is stupid to boot. You know those broads...the ones that think(and act) like they are hotter than they really are? I laugh at her the most.
And Erin, well I heard tell she worked at GS!
You know, once I found out George Elliot was a chick, I discounted anything he/she ever wrote....
Actually I wish you turned the screws tighter.
You do a good job of describing mechanics...i like to get into motive!
