Why can't we sell Manhattan instead? That place just produces garbage. California at least generate some real stuff:
1. Tech (huge)
2. Entertainment - and it sells worldwide
3. Agriculture - quite large and not just shit corn which middle america produces.
4 Wine - 90% of US supply
5 Tourism - Yosemite, Tahoe, Shasta, the whole sierra streach, napa/sonoma valley, mojave, death valley, the blue coastline, 300 days of sunshine, moderate temperatures...
6 The best weed! If they legalize it, lots of tax revenue

Cali created the mess they are in today. If you own or operate a buiness in California you know what I mean. The laws they have related to workers comp and overtime are crazy. For example, if you work over 8 hours a day the ninth hour is overtime. If your boss yells at you all you have to do is claim disability. If you are looking to cut costs the first place I look is California. I have cut my business in that state by 75%. That is what happens when you put movie stars in charge.
Personally I am for selling California to the Chinese as it may allow the following:
1) The ending of the illegal immigration problem and the anchor baby problem. They'll abort you regardless of how you got here.
2) It will keep California (which can't even manage itself) from gaining 9 additional seats in the House because of the counting of illegal aliens as part of their constituents during the 2010 census. That sucking sound we’ll be soon hearing is more money from the rest of the states being sucked to the California black hole.
3) Stop California from ruining the rest of the nation. IOU's Arnold? They'll put your ass busting rocks. How’s that for payback?
4) Bring back tech development and true farming to California as the Chinese aren't going to give a damn about some non-indigenous fish when they have a population to feed. It will bring some sanity to Cali world!
5) The Chinese will bring more nuclear power to California and imprison no-growth environmental loons while at the same time allowing OX carts to be driven through the streets despite PETA protests. CAFÉ standards? If it moves you can drive it!
6) California can be a duty free import zone. There will be no need to go all the way to China for cheap products as new factories can now be built in California with conscripted illegal immigrant labor. Think of the cost savings in fuel and the jobs that would be right next door when the US collapses! Cali may regain its independence as a world producer.
7) Street Gangs….. DEAD.
8) Hollywood can be instantly adapted to produce Chinese Communist propaganda instead of Obama National Socialist propaganda. Nancy Pelosi will be so happy that REAL change has come. Of course the Porn industry will be shut down since if violates Chinese Moral standards. C’est la vie.
9) Finally create that one party system for California that the democrats have wanted all along for absolute unconstrained power with no need to listen to the electorate.
Of course there are drawbacks as the loss of the hi-tech computer industry and the build up of a foreign army on the left coast. But then again has much really changed? Cali may become another Hong Kong under the Chinese.
Would the relocation event be called the "Trail of Sandy Vaginas" because californians don't cry?

But in reality, California has one of the most abundant crop yields of any state in the Union, has an enormously diverse economy (stretching from Hollywood to Silicon Valley to high-tech defense companies to sweet sweet California wines), and if taken alone has something like the 8th biggest economy in the world.
I wouldn't sell it, not unless I basically just wanted to give the Chinese 5-6 bumper crops, advanced tech in computers, defense, etc., and all that sweet wine. We don't wanna teach the Chinese how to make wine!
California should secede. They contribute more to the Federal glommers, and deadbeat NYC bankers, than they receive.

First get rid of the Marines at Pendleton freeing up 18 miles of virgin Pacific coast and develop it (they are getting $28,000,000 an acre in Dana Point for costal property). Finally, develope the rest of the coast allowing private beaches it would be pure gold.

There has been a lot of hoohaa about Alaska. I'll tell you a secret... it's got nothing... at least nothing worth the effort. The US is out of oil in a few years. I mean, totally out of oil. Part of it is due to the direct lack of oil, technical problems (including bullshit extraction decline models which I can poke a hole through on the back of an envelope) and also the massive contraction on real non-gov GDP which is yet to occur. Water... yeah... water would be good. But, water isn't going to help crops due to the lack of the 'pollutant' CO2.
I voted to sell Cal. I just never liked Cal. But, US is going to lose bad regardless.

I've had this theory for awhile that the U.S. will ultimately extinguish its debt by bartering the national parks for our worthless pieces of paper. We could simultaneously 1) remove a non-rev asset from the books, 2) eliminate interest payments , 3) begin receiving a national property tax revenue (they'll certainly want to build high-rise vacation condos in the Gran Canyon and Yellowstone, and we have to pay for defending their investment, right?), 4) extinguish our debt and start over. What a great solution for everyone!
I sort of get what you are saying... it's very interesting that soon almost half of the US by area will be off-limits for 'environmental' reasons. So, if you barter it or not is insignificant as US citizens will not gain use of the land for a very very long time. I would rate your plan probable but insignificant in its ability to correct a ship that’s already broken and sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
What happens in the real world (outside the beltway) when you are out of money and exhaust your ability to borrow? You pawn or sell assets ;)

Who's a commie someone who has 2 Trillion in Cash reserves or someone who has 65 Trillion in liabilities?!
Ca's GDP is about $2 trillion (13%). So what is the right multiple for that top line? Less than 5Xs more than 1Xs. So lets say the proper multiple is 2X sales. That puts a fair price on Ca at $4T.
We only owe China a Trillion so we would end up with the Chinese owing us $3 Trillion. Think what that would do for the dollar! Stocks would soar!. Everyone in Ca would want out so there would be a big migration to places like Phoenix and Florida (the folks in Ca like it hot). The military contractors would all move to Detroit and fix that problem and the movie industry would move to NYC. This would solve the problem of the Co-op overhang in Brooklyn overnight. Taken together this would solve the housing crisis. It would be back to the good old days in no time flat.
The best thing about this is that in less than 5 years the Chinese would realize that they had made a gigantic mistake. That Ca. was just sucking the life out of them and there was nothing they could do to cut costs. So over the first five years the Chinese spend another $1 trillion fixing things up and then they just give up. They learn the hard way that CA is hopeless and can't be fixed. So the sell it back to us for $1. (Like Japan inc. did with Rockefeller Center in NYC) The biggest RE coup in history!.
I think ZH is on to something with this one. I doubt that this will happen. Nancy Pelosi will scream bloody murder. But if ZH can start a rumor that this is in fact, "something the WH is seriously considering" there would be a tremendous trading opportunity for this sites readers. We could get long in front of this and short the heck out of things after the intial 20% pop in the markets. We have an opportunity to make a total of 40% (unleveraged)!!
To create this opportunity we need to 'get this out there' without the SEC coming after ZH for starting a malicious rumor. Possible Mr. Durden can contribute to this profit opportunity.
