9/11 and the War on Terror: Polls Show What People Think 10 Years Later

Polls Show that Americans Think We Overreacted, Overspent and Weakened Ourselves Through the War on Terror

As the Brooking Institution reported yesterday, Americans that the government overreacted and overspent in reaction to 9/11:

These are a summary of findings of a new poll conducted by the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) and the Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland.

Six in ten Americans believe that that the United States weakened its economy by overspending in its responses to the 9/11 attacks. In particular, respondents felt this was especially true of the U.S. mission in Iraq. Two out of three Americans perceive that over the decade since 9/11, U.S. power and influence in the world has declined. This view is highly correlated with the belief that the United States overspent in its post-9/11 response efforts – the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

At this point, a large majority (73%) wants the United States to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan, but less than half (44%) want troops withdrawn completely.

Fifty-five percent say that the United States has spent too many resources in the Iraq war, while a plurality of 49% called the Iraq war a mistake (45% right decision). This criticism is a bit lower than other polls that asked similar questions in 2010 and found a majority ranging from 51 to 62% saying that it was not the right decision.

Support for the decision to go to war is highly correlated with beliefs held by substantial and undiminishing minorities that Iraq was providing support to al Qaeda (46%) and either had a WMD program or actual WMDs (47%). Among those with such beliefs, large majorities say the war was the right thing while among those without such beliefs large majorities have the opposite views.

A modest majority (53%) believes that the U.S. should withdraw its troops according to schedule even if the Iraqi government asks the US to stay another year.

A clear majority (61%) says that the United States should not take sides in its efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while just 27% want the United States to lean toward Israel (5% toward Palestinians).

(Incidentally, top American military leaders agree, saying that the war on terror has weakened our national security).

Rasmussen has repeatedly noted that Americans are strongly opposed to further military or other types of intervention in Arab countries:

As with the recent turmoil in Egypt, most Americans (67%) say the United States should leave the situation in the Arab countries alone. Just 17% say the United States should get more directly involved in the political situation there, but another 17% are not sure.

This was true for Libya. And it is true elsewhere. For example, the overwhelming majority of Americans are also opposed to intervention in Syria.

Polls Show Widespread Doubt About Official Explanations

The results of polls on peoples’ beliefs about 9/11 around the world might surprise you:

  • In its January 2011 issue, the popular German magazine “Welt der Wunder” published the results of a poll conducted by the Emnid institute on 1005 respondents. The poll indicated that nearly 90% percent of Germans are convinced that the government of the United States is not telling the whole truth about the September 11 attacks
  • A new poll conducted in France by HEC Paris shows that 58% of French people doubt the official version of 9/11, and 49% believe the U.S. government might have intentionally allowed the attacks to happen
  • A Zogby poll conducted in August 2007 found that 51% of Americans want Congress to probe Bush/Cheney regarding the 9/11 attacks, two-thirds (67%) of Americans say the 9/11 Commission should have investigated the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7
  • A poll conducted by CNN-IBN in August 2007 found that only 2 out of 5 of those polled in India – the world’s second most populous country – believe that al-Qaeda is responsible for the 9/11 attacks
  • Indeed, a poll taken by World Public Opinion, a collaborative project of research centers in various countries managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, College Park, polled 16,063 people in 17 nations outside of the United States during the summer of 2008. They found that majorities in only 9 of the 17 countries believe Al Qaeda carried out the attacks. The poll showed that in the world’s most populous country – China – only 32% believed that Al Qaeda carried out the attacks.

The bigger question is: where did people first get the idea that Iraq had anything to do with al Qaeda, or had WMD's, or was involved in 9/11? Well, it's been known for years now that the "evidence" was manufactured out of thin air by Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and pals, and sold, lock, stock, and barrel to the American public, with the complete complicity of the mass media. So it shouldn't be too surprising to see "substantial and undiminishing minorities" regurgitating back what they heard on television. Any deviation would be considered heretical. This regurgitating back ridiculous stories is all I ever hear on talk radio, both left and right, so it appears obvious that a big chunk of the population can't really think for themselves, or do even basic fact-checking, instead swallowing wholesale whatever they hear on news outlets that confirm their biases.

The high number of Germans who don't buy the official story is a surprise, though. 90%? I wonder how the coverage of 9/11 differed in Germany compared to the US?

Ten years after...have we learned anything?

Here is an excellent video by AE for 9/11 truth:

Pass this around folks and especially send it to those who still think some clown in a cave and 19 guys with box cutters outsmarted our 400 billion dollar NORAD defense system.

Also, a big question to ask them is, if fires bring down buildings at the speed of gravity, why doesn't my BBQ or fireplace grill come crashing down at the speed of gravity when lit and on fire for hours and hours?

Who was responsible for 9/11?

General George S Patton Car Crash Accident
Patton died on December 21,1945 from injuries sustained in a car accident that happened in Occupied Germany on December 9, 1945. The accident occurred one day before Patton was to return to the United States. In one account Patton was riding in a 1939 Cadillac Model 75 with his chief of staff, Major General Hobart R. Gay while being driven by PFC Horace Woodring. Patton was sitting in the back seat with Gay. At some point a 2.5 ton truck driven attempted a left-hand turn towards a side road in fornt of the Cadillac near Neckarstadt, Germany. The Cadillac crashed into the truck throwing Patton violently forward. Patton's head hit a metal partition between the front and back seats resulting in severe injuries. Gay and the driver Woodring were unharmed. Patton was left paralyzed and died of a heart attack or embolism on December 21, 1945 at the military hospital in Heidelberg. His wife came but he wa sunable to speak to her. This is the offical version of the accident and death. There is much speculation that Patton due to his unpopular views and political potential was assassinated by either the USSR or US ( see picture of the crash and more theories below).

The Box Cutter Story

The biggest hole in the official U.S. Government explanation for the 9/11 attacks is the box cutter story. Never in all of aviation history has any plane been hijacked by someone using only box cutters. In this instance, the government tells us that men armed only with Wal-Mart box cutters hijacked four passenger planes.

During all previous plane hijackings, the hijackers used machine guns. Why? Because no pilot would be scared enough to relinquish control of a plane to someone who has only a tiny knife.

If you simply hammer away at the government's ridiculous box cutter story, the entire official explanation will collapse like a house of cards.

The Stripping of Security

This is very similar to the most problematic part of the JFK assassination. It's not the physical evidence of multiple shooters that's compelling. It's the stripping of virtually all of JFK's secret service protection that screams for attention. On November 22, 1963, virtually all Presidential security protocals were violated and the President was left unprotected. The government didn't even have to directly participate in the assassination to be complicit. All they had to do to be complicit was to give assassins a clear shot.

On 9/11, NORAD violated basic security protocals, too. They failed to scramble jets in a timely manner when the four planes went off course and failed to hit their mile markets. And, when jets were finally scrambled, they were sent from the wrong bases, bases that were too far from New York.

In addition, the jets didn't travel at top speed -- that is, on afterburners. So, interception became impossible.

blunderdog's picture

That part that never made any sense to me...unless there's security footage of the events on the planes, how do we know who did it?

Or how?

Nah.  It's all bullshit, top to bottom.  It's just a matter of prefence which version of bullshit you find most appealing--and basically it's a Rorschach test.  Some folks buy the government story because they hate Arabs and wanted to wage war in the MidEast.  Some folks accuse Israel 'cause they hate Jews.  Some folks think it was a financial coverup 'cause they hate rich folks, or believe everyone involved was a criminal.  CIA?  Sure, blame Cheney 'cause you hate him.

There's more to learn about the individual speaker from their interpretation than you'll learn about the events reading all this stuff.  Any number of possible causes are plausible.  The most zealous and confident speakers are the ones who simply cannot tolerate demonstration of their own ignorance.

I admit I don't know what happened.  I doubt the government story, for damn sure, but I can't draw any meaningful conclusion about what ACTUALLY happened based only on one set of lies.

SuperRay's picture

The military was involved in Three separate 'operations' on 9/11 - Vigilant Guardian, Vigilant Warrior, and Northern Vigilance.  Part of the operation included putting false blips on radar screens, so when the planes went off course, the ATC's didn't know what was real and what was a part of the operation.  That's why they weren't sure what to do.  And Cheney, in the white house, when asked if "the order still stands" as the plane approached the pentagon, said, "yes, the order still stands. Have you heard anything to the contrary?"  Norman Minetta gave that testimony and confirmed it on several occasions.

It doesn't take a phd from Havard, Yale or Princeton to see this as unimportant and coincidental (on second thought, maybe it does).

The worse part of this whole story is how these arrogant fucks are just getting away with it.  Kill me, but don't insult my intelligence, you obnoxious motherfuckers...

escargot's picture

Yeah that box cutter thing is almost laughable.  Can you imagine walking into a bank with a box cutter and holding it up and screaming "Everyone on the floor, now!  Give me all the money!"  People would bust out laughing.  Then again, if hijackers cut someone's throat immediately the people would have been so shocked they'd have had a hard time thinking straight.  Who knows.

Tuffmug's picture

Polls like this and many others show that majority now know they are being conned and sold out by their "representatives".

Unfortunately, they haven't moved toward the Peter Finch " I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" stage but are stuck in the "I'm powerless!" mode and have surrendered to the belief that voting is futile . See no change till incumbents are crucified at the polls for their sell outs. For starters, will vote against any candidate who voted for or supports the Patriot Act, TARP and the other bailouts, ObamaCare,  or the Iraq War.

Jumbotron's picture

Bad analogy my friend.

Peter Finch (Howard Beale in the movie Network) mad as hell speech prompted the network to develop a new show for Beale who was about to be fired for bad ratings, because his ratings were so high now from the mad as hell message.

Then when his mad as hell message turned against a deal made by the network and a Saudi Arabian conglomerate, Beale had a "come to Jesus" moment with the network owner who told him to preach a new evangel.

Ratings went down and the owner, through a terrorist group, had Beale assasinated on air.

The people are correct....you are powerless and voting is futile.

Tuffmug's picture

You must be one of those incumbents I'm going to vote out of office.

173 elite troops of the 22nd regiment of the British Special Air Service (SAS) will return home from Libya in the coming days. Losses incurred during the military campaign, the UK Defense Ministry declared unacceptable.  British military expert Peter Beynchli said, citing sources at SAS.
According to him, "the official casualty figures were not disclosed. But, according to various sources, about 35 troops were killed. "

The greatest loss, according to Beynchli, SAS has suffered during the assault on Tripoli when the SAS helicopter was shot down on the border of Libya and Algeria.

Note, the training and support of a single member of the regiment, according to experts, cost more than 1 million pounds per year.

I found it strange that the U.S. was friendly with Iraq and supported Saddam then he became our enemy and the most dangerous man in the world yet he never attacked the U.S.. What transpired that would reverse our position? Libya and Gaddafi same story. Yet Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are our allies, the countries where the 9/11 terrorists came from as well as numerous terrorist activities against the U.S. within their borders. You must understand that these wars are not about terrorism or protecting you, but are about justifying the aggression they need in order to control just as communism was the reason for so long. Now we are doing business with our old enemies China and Russia.

Hell, when you can send the world's most powerful [not necessarily most effective] military halfway across the world to start a war of death and destruction and not have the slightest concern about being held accountable, why would you NOT do it.  It's very exciting, very manly [in today's perverted views], and definitely shows who is the boss.  Diplomacy and concern for the welfare of others is SO boring, so unexciting, and so feminine.

He puts a round into it and the whole ship disintegrates in a zillion glowing fragments. He shrugs and says: "Lucky shot."

I have always suspected 9/11 was allowed to happen thinking a few offices on two or three floors would be burned out, just big enough to justify a small war, and the guys who engineered it sat looking at the total devastation and said "Oh, shit."

They also likely knew immediately they had not arranged a tight enough cover-up for the unexpected magnitude of the event.

Our grandchildren may find out about what really happened when all the players are dead and gone.

I do not believe the official version of the 9-11 events.  And of course, I do have my own theories about the powers that were actually behind the attack.   But, lets remember this very important fact!   America is just walking up to the brutal reality that 9-11 has a huge cover-up in the mix of events that dreadful day.   Publicly postulating about, who or whom may have been involved, would be totally counter-productive at this time.  Accusations lacking clear facts, and the clear facts are just beginning to be understood, will deteriorate quickly into infighting and more confusion.   More confusion is exactly what the perpetrators of the crime are hoping for.   Please, do not speculate about who did it.  Only focus tenaciously on how the official explanations fail miserably.   Once the people see that the official version is a very well coordinated lie, the truth of who participated, and who is guilty, will be established for all to see.   And the truth will implicate people from several nations, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and political parties.
