Airplanes Have Been Flown By Remote Control Since 1917
Airplanes have been flown by remote-control since 1917. As Wikipedia notes:
In 1917, Archibald Low as head of the RFC [Britain's Royal Flying Corps] Experimental Works, was the first person to use radio control successfully on an aircraft.

There were also [during the 1930s] remotely controlled cutters and experimental remotely controlled planes in the Red Army. In the 1930s Britain developed the radio controlled Queen Bee, a remotely controlled unmanned Tiger Moth aircraft for a fleet’s gunnery firing practice. The Queen Bee was superseded by the similarly named Queen Wasp, a later, purpose built, target aircraft of higher performance.
As the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum notes, President John F. Kennedy’s older brother flew a secret mission involving the remote-control flying of a bomb-laden airplane to attack Nazi targets inside France:
On the 31st July 1944 a U.S.N. special air unit, codenamed Project Anvil, moved to Fersfield from Dunkeswell in Devon. The mission was to involve the use of explosive-laden PB4Y-1 Liberator bombers under radio control. The crew of two, Lt Joe Kennedy (pilot), and Lt. Wilford John Willy (radio control technician/co-pilot), were to take off with 21,150 lbs of Torpex in 347 boxes and establish radio control of the Liberator by a Ventura mother-ship. Once full control was established and tested, at a pre-determined point the crew would parachute from the aircraft through the nose wheel bay emergency exit and the bomber would continue the rest of its mission under radio control, finally crashing onto the target.
In addition, Norad has been able to fly planes remotely for many decades:
NORAD (the North American Air Defense Command) had at its disposal a number of U.S. Air Force General Dynamics F-106 Delta Dart fighter aircraft configured to be remotely flown into combat as early as 1959 under the auspices of a program know as SAGE. These aircraft could be started, taxied, taken off, flown into combat, fight, and return to a landing entirely by remote control, with the only human intervention needed being to fuel and re-arm them.

The Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) was an automated control system for tracking and intercepting enemy bomber aircraft used by NORAD from the late 1950s into the 1980s. In later versions, the system could automatically direct aircraft to an interception by sending instructions directly to the aircraft’s autopilot.

In normal operation, communications between the SAGE centers and the interceptor aircraft was relayed via radio equipment at the radar sites, which were more widely spread out than the SAGE centers themselves. A properly equipped aircraft, like the F-106 Delta Dart, could feed the SAGE directions into the autopilot and fly “hands off” to the interception.
NASA and the FAA flew a plane by remote control in 1984:
In 1984 NASA Dryden Flight Research Center and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) teamed-up in a unique flight experiment called the Controlled Impact Demonstration (CID), to test the impact of a Boeing 720 aircraft using standard fuel with an additive designed to suppress fire.

On the morning of December 1, 1984, a remotely controlled Boeing 720 transport took off from Edwards Air Force Base (Edwards, California), made a left-hand departure and climbed to an altitude of 2300 feet. It then began a descent-to-landing to a specially prepared runway on the east side of Rogers Dry Lake. Final approach was along the roughly 3.8-degree glide slope.
Indeed, prior to 9/11, remote-controlled planes could fly up to 8,600 miles (from the April 24, 2001 edition of Britain’s International Television News).
One day after 9/11, an article appeared on the top science and technology news service stating “hijackings could be halted in progress with existing technologies, say aviation researchers”. The article quoted a transportation expert as saying:
“Most modern aircraft have some form of autopilot that could be re-programmed to ignore commands from a hijacker and instead take direction from the ground . . . .”
See also this article, in which the former head of British Airways “suggested . . . that aircraft could be commandeered from the ground and controlled remotely in the event of a hijack.”
Some have speculated that remote control played a part in 9/11:
And some allege that the use of remote control could explain some of the strange behavior by the 9/11 planes.
Indeed, more than 40 years ago, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff suggested shooting down a military drone airplane, pretending it was a real airplane, and then blaming the attack on the Cubans as a way to justify an invasion of Cuba. Interestingly, NORAD - which is the military air defense agency responsible for protecting the U.S. mainland - had run drills for several years of planes being used as weapons against the World Trade Center and other U.S. high-profile buildings, and "numerous types of civilian and military aircraft were used as mock hijacked aircraft".
And coincidentally, Fox TV aired a fictional drama 6 months before 9/11, in which the U.S. government intended to fly a plane into the World Trade Center via remote control and blame it on terrorists.
Note: While some claim that remote control played a part in 9/11, a separate - but interesting - question, is whether remote control could and should have been used to safely land the hijacked airplanes. Given that Al Qaeda flying planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon was wholly foreseeable, and hijackings could be stopped using existing equipment, why wasn't the equipment used to stop this type of attack? In other words, why didn't ground control have the ability to override the hijacked airlines to safely land them and take control of the aircraft?

I was in Manhattan that day .... supposed to be downtown but was delayed .... I sat in one of the first MetroNorth trains out of Grand Central with F-16s flying overhead .. next to a Korean war vet who was a NYSE trader ... he still had his jacket on with blood all over it. He was in shock ... he said not even in Korea had he seen anything like this as they had to turn the NYSE flloor into an emergency triage center.
The creeepy person who is "George Washington' and all the applauding folks applauding this/his 'truth' must have smoked too much good weed is the best I can say.

I believe the Wikipedia quote used the word "aircraft" which likely includes zeppelins and gliders. GW's use of the word "airplane" may be misleading in this particular instance.

We knew within weeks after 9/11 that the planes were remote controlled and have rung the alarm bells ever since. The great author Joe Vialls wrote about it describing the "fly-by-wire" remote controlled planes that had this technology in them since the seventies as far as he knew then.

My background is in structural engineering and that is a great analogy. It doesn't matter how fast the beer cans are travelling, the result will be the same. There is simply no way, as Jumbotron suggests (above and below), that the extremely light and relatively weak (relative to steel) aluminum airplane wing's superstructures would slice through hefty steel columns of that size. No chance... at any speed. The way wings are built is very efficient and uses all the magic of structural engineering to attain great strength with extremely light materials. Fire a paintball at a coconut and you'll get the same effect. It doesn't matter how fast you fire that paintball... the result is always going to be the same. Engines are of course a different matter. But wings? Not a chance. If this effect were not true, then the biggest problems pilots would be facing would be with scraping grasshoppers off their teeth. Your analogy is perfect.

Excuse me, but in classic physics, all reference systems travelling at a constant velocity are treated equal, that's called "inertial reference systems". You can view it as a beer can shot at 400 mi/hr at a steel beam, or you can view it as a steal beam hurled at 400 mi/hr at a beer can. The law of physics holds in both reference systems and you'll get the same result: the beer can will be crushed. The higher the velocity, the flatter the beer can becomes.

It's much easier for the wings to cut through glass and steel beams than reinforced concrete. Inertia took over the rest as the force of a multi-ton airplane plus the explosion of jet fuel cause massive amounts of debris to act as shotgun pellets do to a watermelon. Shoot a watermelon with a .22. Then shoot a watermelon with a shotgun. While each pellot in the shot shell in MUCH smaller than even a .22, the blast and concussive effects of simultansous pellets is stunningly devestating.
And none of the pellets was on fire as well.

A jet plane travels at 0.346 km per second. when it breaks the sound barrier, the air craft that hit the towers was traveling at subsonic speed and was likely moving at 0.27 km per second or less.

The WTC was suppoerted in the center of the building, not the outside. Just because the glass broke does not mean the center of the building was weakened.

It's been 10 years since I looked this stuff up, but if I remember correctly, the 757 wasn't equipped to be flown remotely with enough accuracy to hit a building. I suppose some could have been retrofitted or specially built, but that would imply that a lot of engineers and mechanics would have known about them.
It also seems natural that TPTB would be reluctant to intercept or shoot down 200 ton airliners over Manhattan, and, in the aftermath, equally natural for them to be reluctant to admit their reluctance.
And it seems reasonable that fuel from the jets ignited and poured down the elevator shafts, weakening the core columns until they failed. It sure looked like the cores failed and dragged the rest of the buildings along with them.
However:
Accepting core failures as the cause of the collapses implies that if the columns had been cut in a few well-chosen places, the effect would have been the same as failure due to heat.
But, it would be difficult to plant charges in an office building without being noticed, because even though such buildings are practically empty 12 hours a day, there is building security 24/7.
But but, former Special Agent John O'Neil, who had been forced out of the FBI for temporarily losing the counter-terrorism plans for NYC (http://www.esquire.com/features/ESQ0302-MAR_ANTITERROR?click=main_sr), became head of security for the WTC, 3 weeks before the attacks.
And but, the plane that hit the Pentagon didn't go off course until after the second plane hit the towers. That makes me wonder if the NYC attack was allowed to happen, then the Pentagon attack carried out to give the impression that the U.S. was under military invasion, to stoke fervor for war.
Curious that the pilot of the Pentagon plane had participated in planning for aircraft attacks against the Pentagon. Curious that Rumsfeld, who a month before had been given sole shoot-down authority in U.S. airspace, was unaware of the attacks until the plane hit the Pentagon, in which he was having a meeting. Curious that 4 morning non-stops from D.C. and NYC to LA were practically empty.

Flight 11 wasn't over Manhatten instantly after taking off from Boston. It first went off course before even leaving Mass. boarders then up north of Albany then straight south to NYC.
Flight 175 wasn't off course as long as Flight 11 but Flight 11 hit first so if anyone was doing their job scrambling planes or generally protecting the country they would have been in the air in order to do something about rogue airliners.

Original remote control mechanism were first invented by Tesla in the 1800's and they purpose was to leave people out of the machines that kill. He has remotes for tanks, cars, planes, blimps. You name it, tesla has a patent and working prototypes. 130 years before today. As far as things that fly go, all are capable to be flown in the same lab simulator. There is considerable circumstantial evidence to suggest that remote control technology may have been used to override the planes's controls. It is highly unlikely that flight school drop outs managed to carry out the precision maneuvers on 9/11, and it is even less likely that an expert Egyptian or Saudi pilot would have picked the recently strengthened, under construction, almost empty section of the Pentagon as a target. The side of the Pentagon that was hit was nearly empty -- and the location for an ongoing major construction project to strengthen the building against such an attack. The plane's trajectory would be extremely difficult for a novice pilot to perform (unlike the much simpler approach to the Twin Towers). This fact makes the official story of "novice pilots" less than believable ...
The first plane that went into the towers passed over Indian Point nuclear power station, on the Hudson river just north of the New York City suburbs. The alleged "al-Qaeda" is described as wanting to do as much murder and mayhem as possible, yet chose to avoid a target that would have caused unbelievable devastation (how would all of New York city, or New England, be permanently evacuated? This question is a good reason to shift from nuclear power to renewable, safe, decentralized energy sources). The towers were hit near the top, before everyone had arrived at work (most of the people inside the towers managed to escape). While this is not any consolation for the victims, their family and friends, and everyone who suffered psychological trauma from watching helpless on TV, it is a fact that the attacks could have been much worse.
Modern passenger jet planes have multiple alarms to call air traffic control in the event of a hijacking. This is similar to banks that have multiple alarms that can be discreetly activated to sound a silent alarm to call the police. It's probably not public knowledge how many there are on a plane or how they work in a bank - nor is that probably priviledged information the point. It's difficult to rob a bank due to excellent security in most bank franchises (the best way to rob a bank is to buy it first, and use some of the loot for campaign contributions to compromise as many politicians as possible). Similarly, plane hijackings were extremely rare in the US before 9/11 due to adequate security, including the Air Force domestic air defense system. However, on 9/11, none of the commandeered planes sent out any alarms that they were being hijacked. If the planes were actually equipped with remote control technologies - which are not theoretical at all - it would have been easy to ensure the transponders would be automatically turned off once the external controllers "hijacked" the plane. "Crossing the Rubicon" by Michael Ruppert cites mainstream media reports about radar "injects" used to insert fake blips onto radar screens during war game exercises that morning - which would have made it difficult for military officials not part of the conspiracy to find the real, hijacked planes (since the planes would not become "stealthy"
