For those of us that have read Kunstler's The Long Emergency and his two World Made By Hand novels, it is easy to recognize after watching the above three videos that the future is now.

There is obviously a concerted and deliberate attempt to emasculate men in the media. Even my girlfriend is pissed at the way just about every ad portrays the women as strong and authoritarian whilst the man behaves like a weak childish dog. This IMO is more about conditioning then it is about marketing.
BTW I disagree with peoples estimates on how much $ it took to build the container. I say that because I am involved in the picking business. Sometimes people will feel sorry for someone and either give them stuff or sell it really cheap. It happens often. All the electrical for that place could be had for $500 new without labor. Who says a guy friend didn't put it in? Who says she doesn't know how to do it herself? Not sure on the plumbing, maybe she just dug a trench for a pipe and ran it into a pond and converted it to a cespit, or maybe there used to be a trailerhouse sitting there. In my mind it would be easier to fix up an old trailer because i've often seen them sell for around $1500.00. Of course they are more exp to move and they may not be available in her area.
I know an old guy that hangs out at the bar that lives in a 10'x20' moveable cabin that he built with log siding. It's nice looking, looks like a hunting cabin. I live in a rural area and he knows several people with lots of ground and he just moves around time to time. Last time I seen him he now has a lakefront view lmao. Not only that he's a vet and has a retirement and probably has more mone than a lot of people at the bar that consider him homeless.
People don't realize how close they are to homelessness. One fuck up and your ass is in court disclosing assets.
Also like on the windows............she could get used ones for cheap or free. Or even new ones for little of nothing that a contractor didn't use. And since it was built to order you could use any size you want.
It appears as though American manhood began to decline in the late 70s / early 80s. That's when the women really began to get uppity and shove their values (fake equality, superficial niceness, socializing, settling down, safety, etc.) down our throats at every turn.
In Japan manhood is dead, and in Europe it's severely diminished. The only places where manhood is barely surviving are in the places we like to think of as "backwards." Latin America, Africa, Middle East, China.
Is it any wonder we find ourselves where we are? Half of men are metros, the other half assholes. And why? Because we aren't allowed to be men.
Aw, that s it, when men were "allowed" to be men, whenever that was, I guess when men had most of the power and when women were property, that's when men were such good people. When men were "allowed" to be men, they were never assholes, we're they?
Think of a place where men are still men, like say Afghanistian, no metros there, no feminists there, men firmly in charge doing many things rough manual labor things with lots of guns ....are those men there good people becuase their manhood has not been attacked? or do they abuse their power and abuse their women?
By your language, you speak as if you are a passive victim, women are not allowing you to be a man? Really? Don't shave your chest hair, don't dress fashionably like a gay guy, who cares, no one cares unless you are an asshole to them. If you take responsibility for your life, don't abandon your children and leave them to be solely to be raised and cared for by their mother, and don't think your different manly likes, skills, talents, make you better than women, and dont treat women as inferior or sexually harass them, who is going to find fault with you? You are different than women, not better, not worse, no one is rooting against decent guys that treat women with respect, take responsibilty for their children, and do manly things all day.
Don't sit around acting like a victim, talking in a passive voice, that is not very adult. Instead be a good person, use your manhood for the good of the community, lead, do what manly things you are good at doing, set an example for children and you can change the world. Or, rather you can sit around and complain you have to pay child support, complain that women dont want to be sexually harassed and want to be treated rspectfully in workplace, and complain that some guys are into fashion and using deodorant. Sounds childish, not manly.
Because we aren't allowed to be men.
Speak for yourself. The whole liberation/equality movement has been as much about feminizing men as anything. Look at the whole metro-sexual dress code and the crap that strewn on television - men are constantly cast with strong feminine behaviors. It's the new "manly" that has some supposed appeal.
Rest assured, though, that is still the fringe. The world (and most women) still pine for confident, masculine men for courage, fatherliness, and leadership in most settings.
If you think manhood is dead, then you should see the huge opportunity to refill the void.
Edit: I admire the women in these stories for their courage. The real story to me, however, is that the situations that demand such remarkable response are on the rise.
The oldest game in the book is "divide and conquer". I would have assumed the Zerohedge gang was above the stupid catcalls and insults so freely hurled on this thread.
Have women lost their way? Yes
Have men lost their way? Yes
Are we going to insult the opposite gender into conforming with our vision of their reality? Not likely.
If I find a woman to be offensive in behavior, I avoid her company. Same with a man. However, I will not insult a woman. I do not believe any man of character would do so as well.
I would suggest that the men on here stop making inflamatory statement...stop insulting the daughters and mothers of others. They are loved and valued in their realm. Show some class and leead by example. Give women someone to look up to, love and respect.
This thread seems to have caused a sex war. I'd say just think about it this way. The majority are sheeple. There are men sheeple and women sheeple. But there are both men and women in the minority too, so don't generalize. There are good members of both sexes.

I'm really a little appalled and disappointed at some of the garbage comments on this thread. This recession/depression/whatever was called a "mancession" for a while. Why is that? Because the chicks really do get paid less, generally speaking (and they don't discount tuition for the bitchez), so laying off the men = cutting costs and preserving more hands on deck. Oops! Not supposed to say that out loud, right? I've seen a lot of coverage about the huge increase in gun sales to females. Some of you guys really need to get to know the WOMEN (not girls) around you. And the shit about how they're all superficial spenders that got us into this mess - you don't know any guys that buy way more vehicle than they can afford, eat every meal out, $60 video games when they're new, etc. and so on? Snap out of it.
I know several guy coworkers that complained about their wives spending but when they did the accounting they were shocked to find out they were the bigger spender on non essentials...snowmobiles, boats, four wheelers, hunting gear, fishing gear, car stuff, high end computers, gadgets, video games, music etc...I had one woman coworker tha wanted an $500 iPad that her husband resisted her buying for a year, even tho he had a already bought a mich more expensive high end desktop that was solely used for gaming...and then he decided they should buy a third vehicle, a slightly used Jeep Grand Cherokee. The next month he questioned the $100 she spent on her hobby, knitting supplies.
I know me a few damn fine women.
And now for the rest of the story...
A California woman builds a home in a shipping container and lives in it with her daughter.
She is charged with zoning violations and not having a construction permit. her daughters are taken into state custody where they are sexually abused by the staff.
A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer.
The intruder was drunk and thought he had locked himself out of his own house. She is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and murder; her baby is taken into state custody where it is sexually abused by the staff.
Oak Park, Michigan's city planner's office is threatening Julie Bass with jail time for planting a vegetable garden on her property.
Julie Bass's property was foreclosed by Bank of America even though she owned it free and clear and never had a loan with them. Julie is found dead of asphixiation in a rented hotel room; police cannot explain how she was able to suffocate herself with her hands bound behind her back but have ruled out any possibility of homicide. her vegetables are taken into state custody where they are sexually abused by the staff.
LOL, I thought that is probably the way it turned out for the first woman. I pulled an old mobilehome onto a 3 acre parcel in California 6 years ago, and they sent me a $20K bill to pay for a transportation tax. They make it really hard to get cheap housing. I had to pay the bill, or move out, so I moved out. I was already into this frugal living stuff before the recession brought it into vogue. It was the same as that lady said. I get more time with my kids if I live cheap.
As for the 2nd woman, I read it on yahoo news. There will be no charges filed against her. It was self defense.
And, Julie Bass also was eventually allowed to grow vegetables in her front yard after the story went national.

What an airhead, what a mess and how long before she gets bored? I assume she has a car - wonder if she cobbled that together too - and a paying job, or other source of reasonable income that allows her to play with her hopelessly impractical, short-term "New Age(?)" project. $4000 she said and I don't believe it! OK she apparently has free use of land, scheme water, electricity (on her parents/friends property?) and has probably got various buddies - not least male - who have freely helped her, BUT I worked in the building trades for a lot of my life (and once built my own house solo) and there is NO WAY - short of bludging - that, especially, she could get even close to paying for electrical instalation and plumbing (including sewage disposal) for $4000 ... and that's just for starters, e.g. what about that annex/bedroom with all the windows. In any case the silly woman could have bought a large old caravan (trailer) for around $4000 (if prices in Australia are anything to go by) needing only some renovation (perhaps) to provide better than she's patched together. Wonder what her next "project" will be? And yes I have near zero belief that any woman could ever replicate what a myriad men have been doing, in these sorts of contexts (add your own contexts), for millenia - granted that a lot of men are/have been fairly useless at making and maintaining all manner of practical, physical bases on which everyone depends, e.g. from agriculture, to transport and the roads needed to distribute goods and services. I'd be impressed if she had made her own shipping container, but I bet she does not even know how to weld - though apparently she knows how to use a jigsaw, if breaking numerous blades (btw a good quality jigsaw would have cost her about $400 and a full set of necessary power and hand tools for her "project" would cost a minimum of $2000 I'd estimate ... but I suppose she borrowed everything. HOWEVER: A while back I read about shipping containers being properly converted into low-cost housing (I think in Mexico), including stacking them to make two storey dwelling, with the upper level being the bedrooms ... I'll see if I can find a link, hold on: Here's one, but not from Mexico: http://containerhomes.net.au/shipping-containers-as-homes Here's the Mexican link to converted 40 foot containers costing about $8000: http://www.theledger.com/article/20080923/news/809230390
I've actually done a similar shipping container home myself. Two years ago I bought a used "Hi-cube" (w/ 8ft high interior walls) refrigerated shipping container and cut holes for a door and two windows, and I'm sitting in it right now and have been living in it for the past two years.
I paid a lot more than she did, but it only took me 2 weeks after delivery before I was ready to move in. I didn't bother with the drywall and I kinda like the corrugated 304 stainless steel look. And let me tell you, that SS is hard! I tried all sorts of techniques: reciprocating saw, jigsaw, circular saw w/ carborundum blade, and an angle grinder. The jigsaw worked the best, but she's right, I went through all my blades, and I just wanted to get er done so I went to the angle grinder, which was second best, although I did get a tiny bit of burnt insulation. The windows have cedar trim inside and out, and I came up with a cute method for doing the casing, since you can't nail into the walls. I'm sure construction workers know automatically how to do this, but I was proud of having figured it out on my own.
One thing that's neat about refrigerated containers is that there are aluminum ribs that run the length where the cold air would come out in normal operation. These channels make an ideal place to run in-floor heating, and I have 6 runs down the length in 3/4" copper, sitting on tile spacers to eliminate contact with the aluminum which would cause galvanic deterioration. I haven't tied it into a solar hot water collector because I need to build it first (have the pipe already though). I also installed a small woodstove, although truth be told, a small electric oil radiant heater works better because the woodstove produces way too many BTUs, and I end up having to open the windows whenever I have a fire. The walls are R-19, and right now there is a 24 degree temperature delta outside/inside and I only have a small heater running at 500W. The energy efficiency of this place is amazing. The other thing is that the container is so airtight that the fire will go out from a lack of oxygen if I close the windows. It is way tighter than any home I have ever lived in, by a large margin.
The cost of the container was $6200 + $400 delivery (from Tacoma WA to Corvallis OR) which seems very cheap given that the pig weighs just shy of 10,000lbs. It still has the reefer, and supposedly it works, but since it uses 3-phase electric (the 3-phase ends about a mile up the road) I haven't been able to test it. A ballpark estimate for total cost is around $10k, which is very reasonable and if nothing else, it has been a wonderful learning experience of living in 288 square feet. That doesn't count my labor, and yes, I did almost everything myself. I got help with the stairs to the front door and to put a roof on a front porch I built this summer. Oh, and I did get help to ditchwitch the 230 foot ditch to run electric and coax for DSL. I'm an EE, so the electric was easy, and the plumbing stuff is just plain fun when you have an oxy-acetalene torch.
My motivation for doing this was along the lines of Gandhi's idea of being the change you wish to see in the world. Americans use so much energy to heat massive homes, and I actually like the fact that limited square footage means that I don't buy stuff that I don't need. From this source: "According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average home size in the United States was 2,700 square feet in 2009, up from 1,400 square feet in 1970." I'm actually happier having less, and see larger homes and more stuff as trying to fill a void that cannot be filled with material things.
Yes congratulations and respect where it is due ... and your costs line up with my guesstimates and what I've read elsewhere.
I just couldn't believe the other person, after watching the video and listening to her, and maybe I went a bit overboard ... including by generalizing too much about womens (lack of) abilities, nevertheless you are rare and there are few female EEs for instance (I admit that my views are jaded by two previous clueless partners and never having actually met a woman - bar one - with your aptitudes).
By what you've written you have accomplished similar to those containers pictured in the links I provided, whereas the one shown in the video (including the add-ons and surrounding area) is ...?
Your motives are admirable. Sorry if I offended by my comments. BTW I live in a one bedroom unit, though I long-since got too old and disabled to build it myself ... the house I built years ago was quite small (I've long-had similar ideals to your own, but it's one thing to desire and have reasonable frugality when single and something else when a partner wants a lot more).
In any case: well done.
Thanks Setarcos,
I didn't really take offense at your comment (who has thin skin in Fight Club?), but I did hope to inspire other folks (men and women alike) to consider the idea of living with less because in all honesty, I have everything I need and don't see any need for more. I often wonder what a person can do with a 2500+ sq ft house, given that individually, we only take up about 1sq foot of area.
In retrospect, it was much more difficult physically than I thought it would be, and there were a few times when the reciprocating saw almost threw me off the ladder. I sure could have used a man's help as I'm small and light and had some difficulty with the heavy tools, but got no offers of help and just did it myself anyway. It's easy to beat up on the woman in the video because her place looks sort of scrappy, but I have a friend who is very similar and I am always impressed by her resourcefulness. Scavenging is definitely going to be the wave of the future, and she already has those skills. I say kudos to her!
Nevertheless, I'm still glad I did it. My next thought is that I should get a tractor trailer bed and put it up on that so I can move down south for the winter, since I'm getting really tired of the Pacific Northwest weather.
If I can add a note: I could have gotten a much better deal on the container, but there were logistical difficulties that reduced my time frame. If I had a few months to get all the stuff together, I could probably replicate what I did for well under $5k, which is a very reasonable cost for a home. It almost begs the question why there are any homeless people in this country.
Congratulations!
PS Sorry about the poor format of my post, but I somehow must have lost the usual formatting. I think it is worth wading through - though I hate it myself when someone posts as I have just done - if nothing else the links at the bottom are worth a look ..... anyone know how I get back the usual formatting (I must have accidentally clicked on something).

A bit off the topic, but not completely:
A drunk Colorado woman punched an iconic $30 million painting and rubbed her bare buttocks on the artwork before collapsing in a heap and urinating on herself at a museum, the Denver Post reported.
Officials at the Clyfford Still Museum estimated that the vandal caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the painting, Still's abstract expressionist masterpiece, 1957-J-No. 2.
This woman is far from my hero, and her poorly done tatoos illustrate some esthetic lack, but in articles about this, where a photo of this "masterpiece" is provided, some telling commeants about fiat money, so to speak were registered. I do hope the woman is smart enough to insist on a jury trial. Showing a jury the "iconic" art work, she supposedly damaged (improved?), could collapse the whole BS modern art market. A case of the greater fool if ever there was one. Two related comments:Upon examination, things that are described as "iconic" (including the Byzantine and Rusian originals) are crap, and reporters who use the word are idiots. It is shorthand for something that sheeple "respect" only because they been told to "respect" it.It happens she was an illegal immigrant from England.
Natch; who else drinks until they piss themselves? That's even what they call it.
Interesting comments about modern art.
My g/f and I actually went to the opening of Clyfford Still. She's way into abstract expressionism. The prices in this arena do strike me as insane.
The deKooning exhibit at MOMA features a wall with four paintings that have supposedly been appraised at $150 million a pop. Whether they'd clear that at an actual auction is another story, obviously. But yet when you look at the half-dozen or so pieces that have cleared $100MM at sales, and it's dominated by abstract expressionists. It absolutely mystifies me.
In any event, I agree it's ludicrous to tap anything by Still as a "masterpiece." Hell, the whole novelty of that museum is that 96% of the artist's work HAD NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE the museum opened late last year.

Btw, don't bother with applying for cushy govt job these days unless you are a vet, or the job you are applying for is vary unlikely to have a vet with the needed education and skill set...I'm a civil engineer, good academics, 25 years releavant experience, I have applied for entry level engieering fed jobs with slaries of $40k on up, and can't get them, I've been told no way becuase I'm not ex military. I had several trade guys try to get census jobs when their work was slow, several scored 95 plus on the test, but only the vets got the jobs, including my 78 yr old dad who was i the army for only two years after ROTC had paid for his four years of college.
Fed jobs are a make work program for vets, they are the primary beneficiaries.
Doont bother with CFPB, if you want the real gravy, be a contractor for DOD, make three to four times as much money...wonder why house prices are so high in DC?

In Oklahoma (as well as many other states) it is perfectly legal to use deadly force if someone enters your home uninvited (and presents a danger to you). It's commonly called the "Make My Day Law", & I would note that uninvited entry rarely happens because the consequences are severe. Also in Oklahoma, if your life is in any danger via any bodily harm you can use deadly force to protect yourself and immediate family members (it's well defined). I always carry. Most all my friend do also. I would not classify myself as a redneck wacko - two technical college degrees, etc.
If you think Oklahoma is a good place to commit your crime, think again, before it's too late. If you think Oklahoma (+Texas, etc.) are backward gun toting wackos, that's just fine, keep your crime in your own state, live with it & enjoy it.....
Idiots in other states haven't figured out what "unalienable" rights mean yet.
It has worked like this in other states: When the cops didn't get there in a reasonable time frame and you are injured then you bring suit saying that you are prevented from defending yourself by unconstitutional local laws and therefor the state has assumed responsibility for my welfare therefor the state is liable if I am hurt. Soon after that realization by state attorneys general the local laws soon change. In a matter of days in Georgia during a rash of violent car jackings people were allowed to carry guns in their glove compartments.
I have mine and a carry permit and I vote and I won't be waiting for some cop to put down his doughnut and come to my rescue.

Sorry, but given your id, I couldn't help but hear dueling banjos in my head as I read that. ;-)
That's all fine and dandy for container girl, but you have to be lucky enough to have a place to put one first. You can't just go get a container and dump it out in the country and call it home. That would be the hardest part. Probably not to many people would want a family living in a container on their property. I personally don't have a problem with it. And if she were as cute as that gal she could just move in to my house lol.
Beats the hell out of the ghetto!
I watched, but didn't hear how she got permission to plop down that container on that country spread.
You boys sit around chewing the fat all day long, undoubtedly counting your money, as women realize that when the chaos and mayhem arrives, it will be us who are targeted, along with the very weak, for exploitation in many forms. The old people, the sick, the medically and physically handicapped and the children will be feeling the full brute force of a failing infrastructure. And you men side idlely by, observing it unfold at the keyboard. Move the fuck over and get out of our way. You are USELESS to us.
Damn Bunny, was my post that disturbing? You know not every guy on ZH is filthy rich just because we talk about the economy, stocks etc. I'm certainly not. I mean granted there's probably a few that have ideas for indentured servitude whorehouses already planned, but many of us are fighting this day to day just as well. IMO no one is safe if things get as bad as you see them getting. ZH is a small population, try talking this shit to normal folk or people that still have jobs and haven't been affected. A lot of them refuse to even talk about it because it's scary and gets them in a bad mood. I went from $40hr to unemployment to nothing and now guys that I used to work with don't even want to talk to me because it's too depressing. Funny thing is thanks to ZH and the likes I seen this shit coming and somewhat prepared and am really no worse off than any of them are that would lose everything after only being off for a couple months. They'll be getting their turn.
I purposely set things up so that the both of us can survive just fine on min. wage jobs. I call those bridge jobs, not a bridge to a better job but a survival tool to help get along until the real shit hits the fan. When the real shit hits those jobs too can disappear but at that point things can transisition to survival quickly and it will be anything goes. So don't go and say all of us are just sitting around in shit stained underwear jerking the rod to an abundance of free porn in between every article. I've already felt the brunt of the massive economic recovery.
Bunny got your tail slammed in a door? I heart men and the ones I surround myself with are noble and useful.
"And you men side idlely by, observing it unfold at the keyboard. Move the fuck over and get out of our way. You are USELESS to us."
And Thank God for that! Being "useful" to people like you is a singularly unhappy situation.
I'll remain that way as you:
This is a quick compilation of directly witnessed actions by several women, and many women I have met appear to have strong tendencies to this behavior.
So you go on your merry way, but be careful. That last step is a lulu!
Let's also not forget who is running the endless consumption craze.
That's odd, looking at my facebook feed from mid-day I see the females out hiking, leisurely lunches, endless student loan derived education programs, taking nieces and newphews to the park, going shopping, going running, going cycling, commenting on celebrity gossip, other non-sensical bullshit.
Basically everything EXCEPT working.
The women I know go out drinking and partying more than the guys. I don't know when the gender behaviors flipped but it has happened sometime in the last decade where the endless fun can't happen until they're drinking alcohol.
Yes I am sure a few are producing something valuable to society, but for the most part, aside from stay at home baby incubators I'd say most women are pretty useless.
The majority of women I know here in MA are like this, but that's because of two factors. A) They on avergage, for the median-type jobs, make more than the men here so B) they have more disposable income.
Women, like men, are also putting off children. That means less money for responsibility, and more money for "me" time.
