Sorry but… This is Beyond Fucking Outrageous – Steven J. Baum Halloween Party Photos Show Appalling Lack of Respect Toward the Homeowners they Defraud

Posted by 4closureFraud

This one crossed the line.

As I always try to censor/warn of foul language in my posts, this one has gone too far to hold that back.

But, I guess, profane times deserve profane words...

Read the write up below and study the pictures. Look at them hard. This is what they think of you "deadbeats."

What the Costumes Reveal

On Friday, the law firm of Steven J. Baum threw a Halloween party. The firm, which is located near Buffalo, is what is commonly referred to as a “foreclosure mill” firm, meaning it represents banks and mortgage servicers as they attempt to foreclose on homeowners and evict them from their homes. Steven J. Baum is, in fact, the largest such firm in New York; it represents virtually all the giant mortgage lenders, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

he party is the firm’s big annual bash. Employees wear Halloween costumes to the office, where they party until around noon, and then return to work, still in costume. I can’t tell you how people dressed for this year’s party, but I can tell you about last year’s.

That’s because a former employee of Steven J. Baum recently sent me snapshots of last year’s party. In an e-mail, she said that she wanted me to see them because they showed an appalling lack of compassion toward the homeowners — invariably poor and down on their luck — that the Baum firm had brought foreclosure proceedings against.

When we spoke later, she added that the snapshots are an accurate representation of the firm’s mind-set. “There is this really cavalier attitude,” she said. “It doesn’t matter that people are going to lose their homes.” Nor does the firm try to help people get mortgage modifications; the pressure, always, is to foreclose. I told her I wanted to post the photos on The Times’s Web site so that readers could see them. She agreed, but asked to remain anonymous because she said she fears retaliation.

Let me describe a few of the photos. In one, two Baum employees are dressed like homeless people. One is holding a bottle of liquor. The other has a sign around her neck that reads: “3rd party squatter. I lost my home and I was never served.” My source said that “I was never served” is meant to mock “the typical excuse” of the homeowner trying to evade a foreclosure proceeding.

A second picture shows a coffin with a picture of a woman whose eyes have been cut out. A sign on the coffin reads: “Rest in Peace. Crazy Susie.” The reference is to Susan Chana Lask, a lawyer who had filed a class-action suit against Steven J. Baum — and had posted a YouTube video denouncing the firm’s foreclosure practices. “She was a thorn in their side,” said my source.

A third photograph shows a corner of Baum’s office decorated to look like a row of foreclosed homes. Another shows a sign that reads, “Baum Estates” — needless to say, it’s also full of foreclosed houses. Most of the other pictures show either mock homeless camps or mock foreclosure signs — or both. My source told me that not every Baum department used the party to make fun of the troubled homeowners they made their living suing. But some clearly did. The adjective she’d used when she sent them to me — “appalling” — struck me as exactly right.

These pictures are hardly the first piece of evidence that the Baum firm treats homeowners shabbily — or that it uses dubious legal practices to do so. It is under investigation by the New York attorney general, Eric Schneiderman. It recently agreed to pay $2 million to resolve an investigation by the Department of Justice into whether the firm had “filed misleading pleadings, affidavits, and mortgage assignments in the state and federal courts in New York.” (In the press release announcing the settlement, Baum acknowledged only that “it occasionally made inadvertent errors.”)

MFY Legal Services, which defends homeowners, and Harwood Feffer, a large class-action firm, have filed a class-action suit claiming that Steven J. Baum has consistently failed to file certain papers that are necessary to allow for a state-mandated settlement conference that can lead to a modification. Judge Arthur Schack of the State Supreme Court in Brooklyn once described Baum’s foreclosure filings as “operating in a parallel mortgage universe, unrelated to the real universe.” (My source told me that one Baum employee dressed up as Judge Schack at a previous Halloween party.)

I saw the firm operate up close when I wrote several columns about Lilla Roberts, a 73-year-old homeowner who had spent three years in foreclosure hell. Although she had a steady income and was a good candidate for a modification, the Baum firm treated her mercilessly.

When I called a press spokesman for Steven J. Baum to ask about the photographs, he sent me a statement a few hours later. “It has been suggested that some employees dress in ... attire that mocks or attempts to belittle the plight of those who have lost their homes,” the statement read. “Nothing could be further from the truth.” It described this column as “another attempt by The New York Times to attack our firm and our work.”

I encourage you to look at the photographs with this column on the Web. Then judge for yourself the veracity of Steven J. Baum’s denial.

Absolutely nothing 'polite' about those pics. See how that works now? You get what you give.

I don't see any 'gather and sharers' here, just a whole lot of righteously outraged decent folk who want to see those who deserve it 'forced' to face up to what is apparently egregiously callous behavior towards others' suffering and misfortune, and those who would defend them.

Big fucking difference.

I'm sure that somewhere on Wall Street this year's Halloween party will be an #OWS themed event with clueless wanna be elites dressing up as protestors.

This is fool-hardy behaviour keeping in mind that there are masses of angry citizens accumulating for the sole purpose of shining a light on the bankster mentality that is bleeding the populace dry.

They are either too stupid or too arrogant to "get" how very much this is like wiggling your ass at a bull while earing red underwear.  It's going to hurt in the end.

By the by, I think we'll  be able to scare up a gas chamber or two for these _____ (it rhymes).

The banksters are a scary unethical lot beneath the level of all other criminally ruthless organisations.  Of course their hired hands would be equally gruesome.

American Sucker's picture

The really funny part is all his associates dressing up and laughing.  You know what foreclosure mills do to third-year attorneys?  Nothing, they don't have them.  When it's time for a raise or promotion, they pitch you out the door and hire a new group of cut-and-paste monkeys.  Those laughing fools are months from the bread line.

What are the odds those maggots stole that cardboard?

What goes around comes around. Baum and his minions will get what's coming to them one of these days.

Maybe sooner, rather than later, if this manages to go viral... Pretty disgusting.

The sad thing is that the "Help" that dressed up for these picutres are completely clueless about what really goes on in the World.. just like the Majority of 99%er's.

Ignorance is Bliss and Stupidity is Heaven!

the tower's picture

Being clueless is not an excuse... "Wir haben es nicht gewusst" does not play anymore in this day and age... It's all out in the open, everyone knows. Especially people working in the global powerhouses, law firms, forclosure firms, UN, etc etc... they all know it. Trust me, I know they know...

whaletail's picture

The help (paralegals, secretaries, file clerks, etc.) that dressed up like this and participated (or, didn't even participate) will be on their street when the firm's banking clients pull their files. But that's ok. And you all, reading this thread, can help. If someone tells you they work at a firm like this, or work at a bank, a drink in the face is an appropriate gesture. Take it interpersonal, bitchez!

Just following orders is no excuse the same as ignorance of the law is not a defense. They will all burn in hell regarsless.

"other people." j.p.s.
The same holds true about knowledge of the "Other". The "Other" (meaning simply beings or objects that are not the self) is a construct of reflective consciousness. A volitional entity must be careful to understand this more as a form of warning than as an ontological statement. However, there is an implication of solipsism here that Sartre considers fundamental to any coherent description of the human condition.[34] Sartre overcomes this solipsism by a kind of ritual. Self consciousness needs "the Other" to prove (display) its own existence. It has a "masochistic desire" to be limited, i.e. limited by the reflective consciousness of another subject. This is expressed metaphorically in the famous line of dialogue from No Exit, "Hell is other people."[35]

This week Max Keiser and co-host, Stacy Herbert, discuss Occupy London art that may be from Banksy... or Keiser Report? They also look at the skyrocketing cost of new oil supply as Tony Blair sets up office in Kazakhstan. In the second half of the show, Max Keiser interviews Gail Tverberg about the 65 year debt bubble now bursting as resources and credit hit their limit.

You forgot to mention Max's call to "Occupy the Vatican!" and also his mention that the Vatican's bank is the most corrupt bank of all.

There's a clip of it here,, if you missed it.

I like to think of it as debt saturation.

Thanks for the link.

One would think those pigs could afford better bleach jobs and hair treatments. I'm appalled.

His associates are making less than $40k a year.  The shitlaw mill model is to hire a couple of folks from the Abraham Lincoln School of Law, TV Repair, and Auto Collision.  For two years, they get paid less than the garbagemen while their cut-and-paste form letters get billed at $150/hour.  Two years in, they get kicked to the curb, and the cycle repeats.  For this, they borrowed $150,000 at 6%.  When they laugh, for just a moment, they can pretend they're not 4 weeks from ruin themselves.  "It won't happen to me!"

Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

I'm sure OWS and Anonymous have their GPSs already locked on to Mr. Baum's address.

Every company has a right to exist and do its work (and provide for its employees)... but to do the work that these people do and mock the misfortune of others with such indignity and callousness is simply... evil.

Steven should ask himself where his dad Marvin likely is right now and remind himself that there are consequences for one's actions.

Sickening... absolutely sickening...

I hate the bankers even worse but i can't stand some of these sub prime people who have to constantly talk about not making a payment for 2.5 years and still getting free rent basically here in Florida. Some of them were the same flipping crowd.

Agreed. Rich freeloaders don't excuse poor freeloaders.

Once you learn that EVERYTHING  'our' government does is to orally service the Bankster/Looter Class, your thinking will become less clouded.  See, the reason these people coast isn't because the Bankster's hearts grew three sizes that day, but simply they are holding these non-performing loans at par and booting these people out will then reveal the loan has a value of maybe 30% what it is held at.

In other words, the bank is bankrupt.

Don't be jealous because someone else gets a few crumbs - I cheer these people and openly laugh at idiots who continue to pay when they are 100K underwater.  Keep paying like good little sheep, 'cause it's what Jesus would do!

You want to know what the future of Amerika is? Imagine a bankster pissing in the faces of your children, forever. Apologies to Orwell.

This is the very definition of "moral hazard". The term is a little vague, but as people realize the upper crust are un-indicted criminals, they start to feel like shmucks if they don't grab a piece also. The 2.5 to 3 year squatters are breaking no law, just playing by the rules.

By the way, who is Jesus?

RafterManFMJ's picture

Jesus was this swell anceint time, like before woodstock, street magician who tossed some banksters out of his Pa's house - and man were they pissed! He upset thier tables and everything. He and his posse tooled around in sandles, then he got ratted out to the man, got a show trial and got wacked.  Ya know what tho? Despite being worked over by sadistic guards, he still forgave all his tormentors. The dude had class, man.

the untouchables ...cossetted in luxury SUV's, yachts and cocktail parties, wined at chuffing back-slapping business lunches, layers of middle-managers to cushion and filter them from any real world nasty issues and never met a customer in their delusional life (and never ever likely too either)

Let them eat cake about some down-to-Earth forclosed-on people show you where to shove the fruit cake Mr Baum?

Of course, we're fucked.  But it realiy doesn't matter who the fucker is, It's realizing you are the fuckee.

Bring the Gold's picture

Truly a let them eat cake moment. All the stuff about folks doing their job is sorta laid bare isn't it. There truly is straight up class warfaresque contempt for the poor and middle class. Really apalling, like the homeless chic fashion shows in 2009.

No. I believe you're confusing it with the common Irish name O'Bauma.
